My biggest complaint is that my service comes and goes whenever there is any sort of thunderstorm within 20 miles. My service also seems much, much slower during the work day, even to my data center, so I know it isn't busy content servers that are just bogged down.

I had Comcast for years, got way too expensive. Switched to satellite TV and DSL internet from ATT/BellSouth. Initially had trouble with VPN for work from home. Had to buy a different modem off of Ebay, Netopia, then VPN worked fine. BellSouth supplied a cheap Westel modem for $75 (YIKES!) - returned it for refund. I ordered 6Mbps service and usually get 5.5 to 6 Mbps when i test it. (Plan to try ATT Uverse w/internet when the satellite contract expires.)

Unacceptable service of 1.5 with no tech support. It was obvious that either the provisioning or the physical connection had been broken when someone else at my apartment complex changed service. I was told it was my DSL modem and it would be fixed in three days.

"Service almost never goes down. Only twice in two years that I have noticed."
"DSL lite states 768 k. But NEVER delivers usually around 650 k or so pretty slow."
"Old reliable, but don't expect to watch streaming video without frustration."
| |
The service is reliable, in the two years that I've had it it has only failed twice for a period of about 12 hours each time. In my book that is pretty good.
The worst issue that I have noticed is that while AT&T say that DSL Lite offers 768k speed it never has reached that, ever as far as I know. Most of the time it is running at about 650k or so. Also I have noticed as of late that the delivery is very choppy that has only been an issue since about the end of last year or so. I have called and reported this issue and was told I would be called back to report their findings on the lines and never received such a call.
Summary, if you need basic web surfing capabilities and don't care much about watching youtube or the like this is actually quite good. If you're looking for more you will have to upgrade. Better than dial up, but not by much.
UPDATE: 8/24/09
I also wanted to mention that I too have noticed substantial speed fluctuations in download speed as well over the past several months or a bit longer. I do believe that this variation DOES affect the viewing of streaming video in quite a negative way. A year ago I had this same service and while fairly slow (DSL Lite) of course, the streaming material loaded in a smooth and progressive way not so anymore. I have extensively checked the computer, wired model Westel 6100, and software and have found nothing out of order with either, yet I definitely noticed that when the wider speed variations started to occur streaming applications started to have issues .
I have called ATT and will be having a tech come out and check. Will update again if there is more to add.

In my opinion AT&T is the only choice in my area. Time Warner was the cable before being bought by Comcast many years ago. Comcast is awful. The HSI is sketchy. The TV reception labors at times. I have not and will not try the voice.
My main problem with AT&T is that I can only get 1.5M. I do not live in the sticks. I live right off the Interstate in a pretty populated area (neighborhoods, businesses, etc...)
AT&T's wireless service in my area is way behind the Verizon (formally ALLTEL) network. So I lose that as a bundle discount opportunity. Also DirecTV does not have locals in my area. So I lose yet another bundle discount opportunity.

I think the Tech Support is not that good at all. The Service is like 99.9% uptime and hardly ever disconnects. It is far better than Dial-up b/c it loads web pages faster and downloading updates is fast compared to 56K . I like the speed but the price is reasonable. It is a decent deal. I think the price can be lowered slightly since dial-up is on about $10/month. I am satisfied with the service.

I used Earthlink for many years but became dissatisfied with constant diisconnects and deteriorating customer service. The switch to ATT was painless, I was able to get 3 mbps for $2 less a month than I was paying Earthlink for 1.5. All was great for 6 months. I have now had 2 episodes of huge slowdowns in speed that ATT has not been able go figure out. I have learned to wait and within a week, so far, it 'cures' itself. Tech support is mainly by rote. They did send a tech out once. He found nothing wrong with my equipment or line , but could not get me back to the 3M speed I had enjoyed for 6 months. He recommended I downgrade to 1.5, I did not and in 2 days I was back to 3 mbps. Fine for 3 months then another episode.
This is still probably the best I can do in my area of town,
Update 8/17/09 ATT has sent out another tech. After 90 minutes , they finally reconditioned my line and when he left, it was back to spec. Unfortunately . 90 minutes later it had reverted back to miserably slow speed. I spent 30 minutes with phone tech support - they attempted to recondition my line again but it failed. Another tech call tomorrow morning. At least they get the techs out quickly. Will try to update with results.
Update 8/18 The problem has once more spontaneously corrected itself. I will tell the tech not to show up since there is nothing to see. Consider ATT quality of service a crapshoot and you won't be disillusioned.
Final Update (hopefully!) ATT finally sent out an ATT employee rather than a contractor. He discoverered almost immediately I had a bad line and corrected it. Had this been done the first or second time, I would have no complaints. The issue is that they kept sending contractors who one after the next found nothing wrong!
Although tech support tries to be helpful, I was promised twice they would send an ATT tech and instead sent a contractor. Once this promise was even made by a supervisor.
Last step is to request a credit. My connection is working fine now.

Well after a long time of this asking for my review here goes. Ordered and live the next day. I got my modem and filters off ebay so I didnt get locked into a contract. I am on a extremely long loop so I do not get my full speed but that is understandable since I am nearly 4 miles from the dslam. Techs are great and very helpful. I know all my local techs and when dsl was first set up for me by one of them I knew not to expect the full speed. As it stands I get around 900/228k I can live with this as long as I can game online and download a song or two every once in a while. I have had only one downtime in the last 3 years, and it was due to the fiber feeding our area being cut. I would highly recommend Fastaccess to anyone over cable. Fast and reliable. I now have the westell 6100 modem bridged to a linksys wrt54gx router. The 6100 helped my download speeds by over 200k as before I had the westell 2100.
8-18-2009 Still going strong.
