UPDATE: Be advised that when FIOS gets to your area they will not reconnect your service if it lapses.
Going to Florida for the winter, whatever -- Do not disconnect or let the service lapse in any way. They refused to give me DSL any more. They told me I had to get FIOS if I wanted internet back - of course at a higher cost. They kept trying to tell me how good it was, it would be so much faster, I told them I didn't care, didn't need any more speed. I didn't stream, only did email, and random surfing, and I needed to check into the competition. Usually they care and offer something when they hear 'going to competition'. They didn't - all they cared about was FIOS.
------------------------------------------------------ I've been with them since Aug. 2000. [[ If you want the short version - skip ahead to the last paragraph. ]]
The original install went without a hitch.
I am currently running 3.0/768 service on a dry line @ $24.99/mo. I actually get about 2.75/680 at 0.95 miles from the switching office.
I don't need the 7/768 service and certainly not Fios - this works great for me. They want me to go Fios real bad. I used to get calls and have had 3 knocks on the door by canvassers when it first came to town about a year and a half ago. Now I just get about 8-12 mailings a month. They tell me how much better it is than copper dsl, But I Know, they want me to switch so bad - because it is cheaper for them. I'll switch when Fios is cheaper for me. I was the 1st dsl in town, I guess maybe I'll be the last.
I am still running the original Westell Info-speed modem. I would assume there is probably newer firmware for it, but if it's not broke don't fix it. And this modem has followed me from original slow speeds to the current 3/768 with VoIP. I wish they would have offered me (for free!) the newest modem the last time I called with a tech problem (details below), but they didn't.
I have never personally seen an outage or experienced a slowdown. If there have been any, I guess they have all been while I was at work or sleeping. Or maybe during a power outage when I had no computer to notice it
Of course it always depends on who you get on the line, but I have always thought tech and customer support has been at least good. Maybe half the time I get someone who gives very good to excellent service.
When they realign and price packages they do not move you to the best value. So I have to keep track and call if necessary, to have the service changed to what is a better value for me. That means sometimes I have paid too much for a few months until I have noticed there is a better deal I could get.
My latest venture was a switch to a dry line and VoIP from T-Mobile, my cell provider. It was a very easy change in December. T-Mobile took care of it all but I called Verizon to make sure the change to a dry line was going to go okay. I was concerned that when they got the cancel order for POTs they would disconnect the dsl at the same time. They said all will be okay but billing would have to be changed from billing by the telco division to direct bill by the online division and as I expected it would be a few dollars more. The only hitch was I was without dsl for about 12 hours at the switch.
When I hooked up the VoIP router it would not connect. It took 2.5 weeks of on and off debug with Verizon saying it was fine on their end - And It Was. Turned out I debugged it for T-Mobile and showed them it was a problem with the setup of their router. - If the DMZ is enabled - The VoIP circuit will not connect. So this was Not Verizon's issue. They were right all along, all was great on their end.
Now I just noticed 4 months later that I was being charged for 7/768 service. This was really my fault for not checking my auto bill-pay every month. I had not ordered a speed upgrade and on testing I was still getting 3/768 service as I wanted. *** I called and they explained how I had lost my package when I moved to a dry line and had been switched to standard month to month non-discounted service ($45/mo for 3/768). The CSR forwarded me to the "resolution" department. They quickly gave me a package quote of $24.99/mo if I contract extended for one more year. This was a no brainer - "Sure" I said, "9 years with you, what's one more."
*** This deal is $5 less than the advertised $29.99 for a dry line 3/768. And they offered (unasked) to credit the difference for the last four months.
***I may not like their cell phone deals, and found better voice service with VoIP, but they get my DSL vote and business for the foreseeable future.***

Verizon is the only broadband provider in my area. They don't have enough DSL ports for the homes here and they won't add more because they want people to buy FiOS... except they have no plans to deploy FiOS here!!! So when someone moves out, the port goes to the next person in line. So I was jazzed when I got to order a line and even more so when the shiny Actiontec modem showed up 4 days later.
Today the truck stopped by the RT, turned on my DSL and drove away. I have spent the past 6 hours trying to get an IP address. The instructions clearly said I would get a redirect page that would walk me through the activation.... no such page. The modem is clearly trying to DHCP but is not getting a response from the other end. My data link stats are lovely. Signal is strong. The local loop guy did his job and drove away, the ISP folks are unreachable.
When I was finally lucky enough to get a guy in India to help, he tried a bunch of things and ultimately told me to log into the modem and open the /verizon/redirect page... except that page 404'd (not found!) Then I lost the connection to him. Each part of Verizon is completely separate from the other, so my accounts for wireless, Voice and Data are all separate. When you go to myverizon.com you'll eventually find a tech note that suggests you can merge your accounts by going to the SSO page.... but there is no SSO page.
I'm totally blown away that there is no installation qualification whatsoever and no place on their websites to confirm delivery of service or even asked if there is anything they can do to improve.
In fact, their voice robot even said "It looks like you recently reported a problem. Our records show the problem has been fixed. (it wasn't fixed) Is there anything else we can do?" - Yes. "Please standby.... There is no answer, goodbye" No way to update a ticket, nothing.
I don't know what to say except that if you have the option of using someone else, go ahead.

UPDATE 08/31/2012: Finally decided to upgrade to the enhanced plan. called in and was told I qualify for 7.1/768 speeds, so I went ahead and upgraded. Minor downer: since I was an existing customer, I could only get the enhanced plan for $34.95 month-to-month, as opposed to the "new customer" price of $29.99. I was told I COULD get the lower price myself, but I would have to disconnect and reconnect service, which I really couldn't deal with given my parents' reliance on internet (and the fact that Verizon is notorious for having 2+ week downtime, and the potential for losing your port at the DSLAM and locking you out of getting service again for months on end.) Upgrade order was processed and the agent told me I should see the upgrade take effect the same day. When I rebooted my modem the next morning, I noticed my WAN IP had changed quite drastically (gone from a 72.xx.xx.xx to a 108.xx.xx.xx), and sure enough, I was syncing on the 5 Mbit/s profile with interleaved mode enabled. Speeds clocked in at around 4.8 - 4.9 Mbits/s. down and around 720 - 730 Kbits/s up. Seeing as my line stats were still quite solid, I went ahead and posted a request to be switched over to FastPath on the Verizon Direct forum, to lower first-hop latencies a bit. The change took place by the next day I rebooted my modem, and as an added surprise, I saw that I was syncing on the 7.1 Mbits/s profile with Fastpath enabled. Speedtests showed a solid 6.6 - 6.7 Mbits/s down and the same ~730 Kbits/s up.
The connection is definitely a LOT more responsive, and large downloads are less painful (a 700 MB file that might have taken an hour and 45 minutes not takes roughly 15 minutes). Also, I can now actually QoS my VoIP line without drastically slowing down other connections. Since I do still have 16 - 18 dB noise margins on the downstream side, I am going to try to get a loop test done to possibly get provisioned at 10 Mbits/second, but even if that doesn't work out, this connection should do fine until FiOS gets deployed to my apartment building (although the buildout is dead in most parts of the country, I happen to live in NYC where Verizon has a franchise requirement to finish deploying by 2014). I have seen fiber crews working during the early morning hours, and according to them, my block is on track to be lit up within the next few months.
UPDATE 08/06/2012: Well it's been an uneventful 3 years... speeds are always right around 1000/384 regardless of the time of day, and pings are also very stable. Got a voip.ms account for my parents, and set it up with QoS on my DD-WRT router, and voice quality is perfect using the G.711 (u-law) codec. Latency and jitter are excellent, which is to be expected from a FastPath-enabled DSL connection.
Bandwidth is a little bit dated, and feels rather inadequate in this day and age of HD YouTube/Netflix streaming, though I can easily have 1 stream going along with a phone conversation, thanks to the QoS at my router. Also, given the recent change in policy to no dry-loop option, I'll probably be switching over to a dry line service from DSLExtreme, since that will get me more bandwidth at a lower price than the $50 I am paying right now for basic message rate service and the DSL.
UPDATE 8/6/09: Just moved to a new place only about a mile or so away.... pretty much uneventful move. Phone was hooked up by 8/4, and DSL got solid sync the next day, although for some reason they pushed my SRD to 8/12/09....lol. Anyway, still rocking at 1 Mbit/384 Kbit. The line is still knock on wood, with stats telling me that I'm approximately 7,500 feet (EWL) from the CO. Just realized I haven't updated the monthly cost in a while... just changed it to the $19.99 rate.
UPDATE 6/13/09: Well, it's been I think 3 years now, and no problems so far. Excellent uptime, latency, and routing. And I'd notice.... considering that I'm on 24/7, and also run SSH/FTP servers and SOCKS proxies, using DynDNS. No comment on tech support, as I've never had to use it. Seriously, holding synch for 6 months = EPIC WIN. If only Verizon didn't push out that firmware update... oh well.
Anyways, speedtest: »www.speedtest.net/result/516865644.png
Stats: Transceiver Revision: 7.2.3.0 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: ADSL2+ Mode Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1179 447 Margin (dB) 31.0 26.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 23.0 11.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 12.0 11.9
The stats speak for themselves..... this line is knock on wood. 7.1 is finally available, but I'm OK with 1/384. Most of my heavy downloading can be done at school anyway.... 10 Mbit symmetric ethernet FTW....=)
Plan: 1/384 Price: $19.95/mo for 1 year I think... + the basic landline I don't need.
Keep up the good work, Verizon.
UPDATE 11/12/08: Got the 1Meg/384K bump today. Called my local business office yesterday, and was given a upgrade effective date of today. Upgrade went on schedule, and I an happily cruising at slightly over 1 mbit download and a little shy of 384 K upload. Speed test and stats:

UPDATE 4/11/08- Going on to nearly two years of nothing but rock-solid service. I only have to reset the modem about once every two months, and my IP address doesn't change too often, good for managing servers. I might have to upgrade to 3/768 soon, as 128 K is just not cutting it for uploads and server hosting, among other things. Considering all the capping going on in the cable industry, and the throttling of bittorrent and such, Verizon has done a good job maintaining their position as a 'dumb pipe' provider. No funny business; that's what is a good ISP. In all, great job Verizon, and keep it up!
UPDATE 10/29/07- Everything is still rock-solid for me. Just a brief issue a few weeks before, but a quick call to tech support solved it via a password reset. Funnily enough, I was lucky enough to get an actual american guy on the line... go figure. We had a nice laugh about the fact that I could literally spit at my CO
Original Review: I've had Verizon DSL for almost like....2 yrs., so I think its about time I review it. At first, it took almost 6 months to actually qualify my line, as I was on the distance limits where DSL starts crapping out. Finally, ordered month to month 768 service in April 2006. Kit arrived about 4 days later, with SRD a week later. About 5 days later, I had set up everything, and decided to turn on the modem just for the hell of it. Surprise, it synced right up. Went through the set-up, and speeds were approx. 500 K. Well below the advertised, but was great compared to dial up.
Fast-forward to December 2006-Jan 2007, and speeds often climbed to about 720 K. Funnily enough, they went back down gradually, from January to September. Also, by then, I learned about the transceiver stats thing, and managed to pinpoint it down to the line itself. Called VZ numerous times, got told it was the best the loop could handle, due to distance.
Then, in June or July of '07, few weeks after getting the 14.95 deal, I woke up to find no dialtone or DSL. Called voice repair, they sent a tech within like...30 minutes. tops. They managed to fix the dialtone, but DSL stayed out. The guy who was fixing the dialtone issue apparently had DSL equipment as well, so he did some line tests, and told me something in my particular loop was preventing me from getting the full sync.
The next week, I got a call from the CO guys, telling me that I would lose dialtone for an hour, while they switched me to a better pair. I told them to got ahead. About 2 hrs later, sure enough, the DSL light synced right up, and sure enough I had the perfect 864 sync!! Finally, life was good.
Now, as of sept '07, I've moved to a place within 3,500 ft. of the CO, so my connection is even more rock solid. Also, I got switched to ADSL2+ and FastPath, so the connection now simply spoils me. Now then only thing is to get the 3/768 package.
Looks good to me..... So, overall, once issues are resolved, Verizon rocks in terms of reliability. I mean, it's DSL, so longer loops will always be a bit iffy, but as far as the price vs. speed, I think it's still the best value around.

This ISP allow their network to get congested causing their customer to call the tech support because their internet become so slow/laggy.
Verizon is too greedy to upgrade their system to resolve the latency issue. Instead they will create and made up a new issue with their customer such as an outage, they're working on it. They will even send a technician to their customer resident only to tell the customer there is nothing wrong with your dsl.
It's been a few months they're playing this game with me, they even refuse to give me credit back for the time i was with no internet. Right now its 3 am and my ping is 1835 ms.

Last couple of month seems like some one fix the phone wires. I do not get static when it rains any more. Tho, yesterday there was a water main break. I pick up my phone and only hear 1sec of static and it was back to normal. DSL speed now staying 7.1Mb/s download and 860Kb/s upload I think it is because I change my old setup. I am now using 2in1 Netgear DGND3700. Before it was ADSL > RJ45 > Router setup. Never could get this close of speed connection on the old setup. Upload mostly around 200-500Kb/s, and download 3Mb/s to 6.4Mb/s on the old setup.
========================== 8/24 Last couple of months I get 7600/860 connection. This week 8/21, I renew my Phone + ADSL bundle 2 year contract. $44.99 Had couple of disconnect The same DGND3700(I think I use it almost a year now.) now say my connect 5230/860.
Seriously Verizon. What gives.

If you want it sooner, make sure you fill out the "notify me when its available" after you check your address. Verizonfios.com . Id say they keep track of the interested people to wire the most profitable buildings first. | |

I used to work for a ADSL Company and our practices we're NEVER this bad.
I have a 3 MB Connection and i'm capped at 40 Percent, When asking for our Cap to be removed we're getting transfered to India and every other place in the world.
After explaining to the tech about the issue you will get disconnected, RANDOMLY. I'm sure anyone who has ever had an issue with this ISP has gone through this.
Above i spoke of the 3mb connection, or aleast thats what i'm being charged for. After speaking to a billing person i'm told that i'm only on the 786 package, but i'm being BILLED for the 3mb package. *the billing agent was from Inside the US* But of course, we got disconnected
I have not called back yet, because it could take 3 hours to get someone on the phone only to be disconnected. I have no PRO's for the Company only CONS. If there was someone else I could go through I would, I may go back to Cable they OVERCHARGE you so much but atleast I get the speed I pay for..
(UPDATE) 8-14-12 / After finding out you have to talk to Webchat support to get anything done, The issue was fixed. They had me using the wrong profile on the network server. After that was updated and fixed my Sync rate went back to the level it was before the Tech in India changed it. (i was correct)
The issue now is my download speed is only using about 20 Percent of the total sync rate. 1678kps on a 8 MB line is NOT good.. THe upload speed is perfect which means to me that it has to be another network issue otherwise both sides of the Tube would have an effect. After 1 year im STILL having issues... the SAME issue..

Waited 4 days and called in and they started the whole process over again. Said no record of my DSL modem was to be replaced. I just requested to be disconnected from and after being passed to the 3rd person I was finally able to get it disconnected. Contract? Yea right. Every business that sees that paying for something (even if it is in contract) that no longer is useful to a business their first order of business is to break the contract. But people are supposed to have a "moral" obligation to pay? I have no morals whatsoever over contracts. They are only good to me for as long as they serve "my" purpose and not anyone else. And taking a hit on my credit is not big deal. At least I am exempt from credit fraud now. Wont have to worry about this. Any sap wants my social security is welcome to it. It's completely worthless and will remain so as long as banks get tax money. | |

Now, you do realize that FiOS is a Verizon operation?!
Please clarify what you mean. | |
