Verizon has always been somewhat reasonable, with certain times where the connection is throttled, but now I can't even watch the lowest resolution YouTube videos (360p) without stuttering. This isn't a YouTube problem, the whole internet is throttled. Browsing the web is herky-jerky and slow.

I cannot recommend Verizon and their un-gainly 12 month contracts that must be renewed, lest you pay massive fees.

Bottom line: I spend more money than I ever have for DSL and I'm getting less out of it. What a waste.

Historical note: I signed up with Bell Atlantic for 640/90 service, in early 2000, and DSL was much more of an adventure back then. I switched to FiOS in 2009, after waiting forever for them to run fibre to my street: the rest of the two had it years before we did.

Here's the last part of my log:

2006-12-15: Still no FIOS.
2008-03-19: Still no FIOS.
2008-09-22: Hey, guess what? Still no FIOS.
2009-03-24: Rumours of FIOS have reached the neighborhood. Maybe summer.
2009-04-11: The fibre is coming, the fibre is coming!
2009-08-16: Fibre's in the street, my installation is next month.
2009-09-08: There's conduit under my lawn...
2009-09-12: The FIOS truck is parked in my driveway...
2009-09-12: There is light at the end of the tunnel: FIOS is up
2009-09-14: .. and the DSL service is now switched off. Bye!

About 10 months ago, signed up for 1M down/384K up with 1 year contract and no analog voice service, $20/month. Decent deal. At the time I could buy their "3 Mbps" service which only allowed 1.5 Mbps due to my distance from the CO, for (IIRC) $38/month, but I didn't need any greater speed then.

Lately Verizon tells me my 1 yr committment is ending and the price will go up to $22/month. I have no idea if I'll be able to renew for a year's committment @ $20/month, seems unlikely.

But I'm now interested in getting the higher speed, even if it's only 1.5M. Go to their website and find that the price with a 1 year contract is $47/month, and still 1.5M at my location. They'll give a $10/month discount for 3 months - big deal. $47/month for 1.5M service??? That's as much as Comcast gets for 6 Mbps service, but I have no Comcast option, or any other near equivalent HSI choice on this street.

I hope all those who do have a choice opt for providers other than Verizon when the price is the same or better.

FYI, my rating of "value for money" is based on the higher speed service, not the $22/month 1M plan I currently have.

I'd used Verizon DSL when living two blocks down the road in Davis Square in Somerville and had a consistent, clean 3.0 mbps sustained connection with some minor hiccups in the hookup. Now, a block from Porter Square in Cambridge, I barely get 1.5 mbps and should really be provisioned only for 768 kbps because I'm much further from the DSLAM. DSL didn't work at first since the phone line hadn't been used in a few years; it took several hours going through their CD's goofy automated troubleshooting tests and then another half hour on the phone to a call center in India to get to the point where Verizon would send a line tech to come out and resolve the problem, which was that the local telco lost track of which pairs went to my apartment since they'd been unused for a few years. Nice. Verizon subcontracts out its services to local union workers and would only give me a window that the tech would come out sometime between 8 am and 8 pm. Yes, a 12 hour window, I can't even work from home without Internet access, so there's a day's work lost (in terms of wages, this cost more than the entire year's expense for the DSL service to begin with).

-----

Now, almost two years later, the DSL speed is increasingly inconsistent. Yesterday I was getting 1.6mbps/768kbps; now I'm only at 608kbps/408kbps. I've called Verizon's tech support five times and wasted as many hours explaining the problem to them and following their tech's scripted instructions and responses with no resolution. Every time I call I have to follow the same useless instructions despite telling them that I've already done this. They keep closing my technical support tickets without confirming that the speed problems have been fixed. The service was reliable and connection speeds were consistent until about two months ago, since then, getting the speed issues resolved has been impossible.

-----

Almost a year after this, the DSL connection has been consistent and stable. The instability issue disappeared after they sent someone to troubleshoot issues at a junction box down the street. I still have to reset the modem every few months when it connects at a lower speed; this only seems to occur during very wet weather (torrential rain).

Twice I have had service with them - once in Florida, and once in Pennslvania.

The service itself is reliable. Oh, there were occasional outages during thunderstorms and other severe weather. But it was reliable. And when my modem fried out during an electrical storm, they did send me a new one for free. That was a nice touch.

However, when I tried to disconnect my service in Florida, the order was completely botched. They disconnected my service prematurely, and had to reconnect it. Then, when they reconnected it, they tried to hit me with the standard reconnection charges!

This time in Pennsylvania, they didn't double-charge me, but I did have to call 10 different times. After getting disconnected or reaching dead ends, I finally found someone who could place the disconnect order.

The voice response systems at this company are terrible. Half the time, you are misrouted to a service center in California in Texas, instead of the area you need. They really should implement local access numbers for self-service.

And tech support cannot handle billing or provisioning issues. Their tech support is actually fairly competent; I have had nothing but good interractions with them. But billing and provisioning? Those operations are terrible. I really wish that this company would get their act together in this area. I really don't want to waste an entire afternoon, calling auto-response numbers, for something as simple as a disconnect order. Please.

I was a cable modem (COMCAST) user for 9 years but they fell out of favour with me over their "traffic shaping" attitudes and 7% to 12% price increases every year. When the local COMCAST system started to have weekly outages lasting 3 to 15 hours each, moving to Verizon DSL was an easy choice. The online order process for 3000/768 DSL service at $34.95/month was a snap. I received the Westell model E90-610015-06 DSL modem installation kit 3 days later and the service was activated 4 days after that. Self installation and service activation went smoothly taking well under 30 minutes. On days with clear weather the service is flawless and I am totally satisfied. However, I am having problems with DSL modem resets every 15 minutes or so anytime there is rain or wind. Talking to Verizon Online Support takes the course of trying to convince me that it is my equipment which is causing the problems, so no resolution after 4 months of disruptions. After 18 months of this substandard service and run-around support, I dropped Verizon DSL in favor of a new FTTH provider which became available in my area.

This is the second time we have used Verizon DSL and the service has not been worth the money. We have had constant sync issues...and problems with great service one week...virtually no service the next....spend the extra few bucks for a better provider...

I have Verizon DSL for my home and my business. Both locations are in the same neighborhood and I can see my business location from the second floor bedroom window of my home. The speed at my business is 7mbps and they tell me I can only get 3mbps at my home. However, I hardly ever get above 2mbps at home and it is generally 1.5mbps. Half the rate of the advertised speed! It literally makes me sick I signed a contract with these people and have used them for my business line as well.
