Another update ... I still have the Elite tier and have been very happy with it. I had one blip with losing speed since I've had this tier and Tech Support was very helpful and fixed it in about 15 minutes. I've had zero downtime.....which makes me even happier with the service. I am still paying $34/month....another reason to be happy! At this time I have no intention of moving to a different service. (Updated 10/31/08)
Another update.... I upgraded to the Elite tier a couple months ago and it was an easy change. I did the update via SBC's website and my speed went up on the day they said it would. The speed has been rock solid and I am very happy with the service. SBC seems to have eliminated contracts, but the Elite tier was only $34 per month, which seems reasonable to me. I have not had any downtime since I last updated my review in March 2006.
Updating my review.... I've been with SBC DSL (or AT&T DSL...whatever they're calling the company today) for a couple years now and have been pleased with the service. It has been rock solid. The only downtime I've had was for a few hours after a particularly bad storm (high winds, rain, etc.) last year. The only thing that annoys me is the way they handle contract renewals. They are all over the map on pricing when you renew. It seems to depend on what mood they are in when you call them or what mood the website is in if you renew on-line. However, I did renew my contract, so I'll be with them for another year. I've left the information from my original review in case it is helpful to anyone....
Did an ISP change from AOL to SBC. SBC confirmed that I am now on an RT and am 3692 feet away. So, I ordered the 1.5-3/384 package on April 7th, price was $36.99/month since I have SBC land-line/long distance and Cingular wireless (all billed through SBC), the package also includes unlimited dial-up. Was told I would have a 1 year contract, but would remain at the $36.99 rate as long as I kept the SBC/Cingular services and combined billing. I have no idea if this is true or not, but will find out in a year!
Received the self-install kit on April 12th (SpeedStream 5100b modem, 4 line filters, 1 filter for a wall phone, cables, install CD). Per the SBC website, my service was suppose to be live on April 16th, however my line was not fully provisioned by that date. My first problem was a NIC card issue that the phone Tech Support was unable to resolve. They also neglected to mention that my line was not fully provisioned. I replaced the NIC card on April 17th and was still unable to connect. Called Tech support again, this time got the folks in India. Their solution was to start deleting software and/or reformat my hard drives and reload my OS. Since I was not ready to go that far, I turned to the excellent SBC forums here and received confirmation that the line was not fully provisioned and realized I had to wait until April 19th (Monday) to sort out my issues. After calls to ASI, AOL, SBC Sales, SBC Sales Support and ASI again, they finally decided to send a Tech out (free of charge) on April 21st to sort out my problem. Needless to say, I had lost my sense of humor by this point.
The Tech was excellent, but confirmed yet again that my line still was not fully provisioned and they would have to send someone else out on April 22nd to fix the problem. I was not at all happy about this, but didn't have a lot of other choices at this point. SBC finally sent the correct person out to fix the problem. By noon on April 22nd I was finally up and running. In retrospect, I think the problems I had were a combination of SBC missing the provisioning date, AOL turning in a disconnect order instead of an ISP change order and SBC thinking I had a virus or worm that was preventing me from connecting (this is the one that ticked me off the most, since I had repeatedly been asked this question and explained to the folks at SBC that there was no way I had a worm or virus because I had scanned my system with Avast, A2, SpyBot S&D and Ad-Aware before I ever started the install process).
I did not load any of the Yahoo software. I am using PPPoE on the modem to connect. The registration process was very smooth (followed instructions in the FAQ from the SBC forum). I have already set up a couple sub-accounts off the primary account. SBC allows up to 10 sub-accounts. My speed has been going up each day. I'm currently seeing speeds around 1850/360, but still have some time to go on the 10-day modem optimization process.
Once I finally got connected, the connection has been rock solid. I think I'm going to be really happy with the SBC service. However, I will certainly avoid calling Tech Support and will use the SBC forums here at DSLR if I have any other problems/questions.
Please note that I rated Tech Support as a 3. This rating relates to the Tech Support via phone only. The Tech Support I received on the forums here was excellent!

Because of the problems of getting service with Cox established, I decided to see about alternatives for broadband access.
I checked a number of different companies...most of which offered DSL of some type. But, there were also questions on whether they could actually get me service to my location or not. But, since I had phone service from AT&T....and I kept seeing this promo when I visited Yahoo!....I decided to just do it.
I wasn't worried about Cox coming through, because I had at one time wondered what it would be like to have two broadband connections. And, now I know.
I ordered service on July 25th. They later emailed that my service would be active on July 31st. The modem arrived that day (actually it arrived on July 28th, but I work for a living...so I had to get UPS to redirect it...) I was up and running later that night.
I could only order 1.5Mbps/384kbps, of course, I wanted faster :..( And, what the modem says I'm getting is about 704kbps/384kbps. I guess I'm kind of close to that....except for the one evening...the thunderstorm....when I was only getting about 26kbps....
OTOH, when Cox was down last night (August 3rd)....with a few adjustments I could still access some of the outside world. Though since Kansas State University also uses Cox....
FWIW, pre-qual reported me around 8000 ft (crow fly I'd guess I'm about 6500 ft).
20060814 0700 Update: around 1:40 am on the 13th, my DSL connection started constantly reseting. After a couple calls, they concluded that there's something wrong with my service and they've scheduled a tech to come out and look. Hopefully, they can do it without me being home....though I might be home because there's a puddle in my living room.
Meanwhile KSU now also has a 'backup' connection from AT&T....though due to better peering on AT&T most of the traffic is going on that (even from Cox).
20060814 1500 Update: A guy from AT&T showed up in response to the trouble ticket, but my connection had returned around 10:30 this morning. He explained that some card in the box near by had gone bad Sunday morning and they didn't get it properly replaced until this morning around 10:30....
20060917 0030 Update: around 1700 on the 16th, my DSL connection started experiencing significant packet loss....and while my upstream is pretty good (when the connection isn't reseting), the downstream barely registers (the speed test page won't load completely, so I can't clock it)....but it is probably worse than the time I was getting slower than dialup download speeds (but ~384kbps up). Interesting that it is only about a month since the last time this happened.
Should I call AT&T to having them send somebody out again....or should I just cancel.
Though in the couple of weeks before this latest outage....the modem was reporting 928kbps for downstream....
20060917 0950 Update: after forcing myself to go to sleep without any working Internet.... Shortly after my previous update, my Cox connection went down as well...cable TV was out as well...and it meant that I couldn't easily call the DSL support number. Since the phones around my place are digital service via Cox, while the landline is just a cheap line powered phone I have in another room incase I should ever need to call 911.
Anyways, this morning the modem was reading 1024/384 for sync rate, so I tried running a speed test....and the connection reset, but came back with a sync rate of 1440/384. Though my measured speed is only like 640/284. Perhaps there is hope though.
Meanwhile the speadstream spectrum tool here says my estimated downstream max rate is 1456 (estimgated upstream max rate is 690).
Wonder if when my contract is up, if AT&T will be able to offer me better than 1.5/384?
20060920 2300: Well, things have been running intermittent since my last update...good for a few hours bad the rest. Finally decided at about 2040 that I would call AT&T and maybe get a ticket going. But, first they had me go through all the nonsense trying to prove that it must be my fault that after working for so long that it had to be something at my end. Ignoring that I did all this a month ago, only to have them make me miss a day of work and come out and say..."oh yeah, we just replaced a line card 30 minutes ago...."
In the end, they said to that I need to call local repair and open a ticket (ignoring that every prompt that asks if my issue is with DSL tries to pass me back to the DSL support number) Eventually, I do get through...and they want to test my line....which I authorize. A few minutes later they call back to tell me that they can't find my line to test it....but they were able to call me back....
Meanwhile, there's a separate ticket with DSL as well....and they do something on their end....and it kind of works now...except it is slow....about 300kbps up/down. The downstream speed is below the level that I'm paying for, so hopefully they'll continue to work between the groups and get things working again...
Sure wish though that in the support menu system, there was a button that says I'm an Electrical Engineer / Systems/Network person that already knows the issue is with them and that's the only reason I'm finally calling them...so just fix it now.....and stop acting like I'm an idiot, when your busy trying to hide that you can't keep up at my level.....
20080508 - A few months back the DSLreports spectrum analysis tool reported much improvement in my line, but I wasn't able to order upgrade is speed online. This morning while browsing the AT&T site, I found that I could order upgrade...two additional tiers. spectrum tool reported 311x/690. So, I ordered 3.0/512 (instead of the 6.0/768)...for $30/month (my old 1.5/384 plan had gone up to $25/month quite some time ago....but the modem was only give me 768/384)
20080509 - This morning I woke to find my DSL modem reporting a speed of 1984/512. The spectrum took is now saying I 'could' get 35xx/818. Maybe I should've ordered the 6.0/768 tier (for $35/month).
I graph the SN margin/Line Attenuation along with up/down speed from the modem in cacti....so I see that my SN margin has dropped quite a bit, and Line Attenuation has gone up a little. So I see it started shifting gears around 5:20am.
Using the speed tool, I still can't get the reported speed. But, there is a proportional improvement. But, latency has dropped quite significantly. Better than cable now. Well under 100ms, maybe I can switching one of my VoIP services to using DSL.
20080512 - Since it is still with in the up to 5 business days for order completion, I guess they will continue to slowly inch up my speed and improve my line. Starting to make me really think that I should've gone for the 6.0/768 tier, since it looks like they might even be able to achieve acceptable levels for that.
This morning, sync speed was 2496/512. Spectrum tool reports an estimated downstream of 4044 (upstream 818). And, cacti shows a slight improvement in SN margin, with no change in line attenuation.
Perhaps I'll revisit 6.0/768 when I start my new contract (hopefully I'll hear about that soon....)
20080903 - Took the plunge and upgraded to the 6.0/768 tier....next day my sync rate changed to 6016/768. And, pretty much, it was done.
20081023 - Still bothersome that DSL sells sync speed, which isn't real speed....which tends to be ~4.8M/500k. Makes it hard to compare with cable (especially PowerBoost skewing the speedtests) But, it works. Lately the connection seems to drop briefly every other day, usually in the early morning. SN is around ~8, atten 49.

Was offered 3.0 Mbps DSL on Aug 29 by Local ATT tech. Sent online order on Sept 2. 2008. notified that line was active on Sept 5. - after many many telephone and "Chat" contacts the equipment arrived on Oct 2, and finally Gateway accepted Sync on Oct 3, Original Speed: 10-3 2:45 pm Dallas
Download Speed: 1708 kbps (213.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 419 kbps (52.4 KB/sec transfer rate) - and still the speeds are the same. NO IMPROVEMENTS.
From the start info was " there is a problem with the account" and everybody said "We shall correct that now". finally on 10-2, we found a tech that stated it was a "Line Maintenance Problem" and you will be online about "Noon" tomorrow... and Oct 2 about 11:45 the Gateway did sync. After have the same speeds, I did contact "ATT-Chat-assistance" and ask why my speeds were only 1.7 Mbps when I was paying for 3.0 Mbps.. was informed it takes 10 days to get your line upto speed. speed offered was 3.0Mbps/512Kbps @ $30.00 a month. Equipment send to me was Gateway by 2Wire Model 2701 HG-B - firmware was updated online after ititial setup and activation via ATT.
10-15- Called today and checked why friend who was shipped equipment on Aug 26, and informed Line activation was on Aug 29. still had blinking red lite... Support informed her-They did not have a request to activate her line since her equipment had never been shipped. _I installed on Oct 2. and called for line activation Oct 3....

I live in Rockwall, TX and moved to a new housing development area. After having a BAD experience with Charter Pipeline (you can read my review) and even though being only a cable customer since broadband was available in my area in '98, I decided to switch from my cable modem service to DSL. SBCYahoo! to be exact. I first had their Expert Plus Package, which was 1 dynamic and 6000/384 for $99/month, 1 year term. Install was super easy, and service was even on a day before they said. With in 15 min, I was connected and couldn't believe the speeds. After ~9 months of service, which were incident free........no calls to tech support, few problems or loss in service that didn't last 3 minutes, a few modem power ons/offs, but for the most part ROCK SOLID. What a difference from cable service! I was sold and loving life. My file downloads cranked at over 600kb/sec. Not bad for $99/month.
What I really wanted was their Expert-S Plus Package, which when I initially signed up was $159/month and came with same speeds but with 5 static IP addresses. A bit steep for me. However, a recent check on their website showed that what was my old dynamic package was now the S Package, 1.5-6000/384, 5 static IP's, for $99/month, with $250 install fee. What I focused on was the $99/month price which I was paying for only 1 dynamic IP and a PPPoe connection. HMMmmm. So I called them asked them if I could migrate to the static package since I was paying same price. Expecting some sort of excuse, they did the unexpected. They said "sure, no problem". Wow! I was impressed.
So, friday, my order was completed. I was told to call the next friday to get my static IP addresses through tech support. I was also given phone numbers for support for setting up servers! I was shocked that they actually have a dedicated number for troubleshooting the setup of servers on your connection. I knew that SBC was one of a few ISP's that allows servers and don't block port 80...wild. So, I called the next friday, had to talk to about 3 different people, being bombarded by sales pitches on other SBC products, but it was nicely done and I nicely declined. Finally get to THE tech guy who sets up and issues me my IP addresses. He asks me what kind of hardware I have and what my plans are. I tell him about multiple routers I'm using and what my plans are for my network. He stops his IP setup and says he has a great idea that will make the most out of my network and server environment. He basically setup my network so that I truely have 5 IP addresses to play with, issued me another gateway address to link my routers together and explains everything, patiently answering questions so there's no problems with setup. He went out of the way to help me get the most out of my service. And the best part was they allowed me to do a self install avoiding the $250 install charge! What a deal. Oh, and I was able to use my own routers and the same dsl modem that was issued to me with my initial PPPOE dynamic connection. I was thoroughly impressed with how they worked with me.
After getting all my info, I setup everything.........whooops........my download speeds are around 1.2down when I was getting over 5 down with my dynamic PPPOE connection. After a late night call to India tech support (humerously it was a total waste of time.....couldn't understand a word)......I waited until the morning thinking maybe they forgot something in my setup when issued static IP's that yesterday afternoon. I frustratingly did everything from A to Z from one tech person to another to finally a trouble ticket being issued to the sbc network line techs in my area........mind this was after much frustrating discussions with support personell who basically said nothing was wrong that they could see, and even had the audacity to say the line speed I said I was getting was not possible. Well, anyway, after being issued a ticket number and haning up, I was certain that someone probably forgot something, they didn't want to fess up to it, the "guy" wasn't in yet, and they were covering tracks. 30 minutes after my hang up, the speeds were back to normal. The next day, some tech guy called to say the issue with my line was resolved. Yeah, whatever! All I cared about was getting things back to normal, however I had to waste a few hours trying to explain things when someone probably forgot to do something right the first time. I must say their support system is quite a bear. However, since this was the FIRST time I had to call for anything in over 9 months, they are not doing bad at all, and I really have no room for complaints.......within 24 hours it was back to normal. At least that is my experience from being a long time cable customer. So, even though I went into detail about my support issues, I still give them a 4 out of 5 in that area. Tech support........if you don't have to call them, there's really not much reason for complaint.....but it's no fun when you do. Oh well, nobody's perfect.
All in all, in my area, in Rockwall, TX, which has only Charter Pipeline and SBCYahoo!, I cannot say much negative about SBCYahoo! DSL. I'm sorry I didn't try them sooner. Just the speeds alone and the extras they give to accomodate people who want or need more than a gaming or surfing connection are just what I have been waiting for. For me it's been a blessing and a well loved service. Hope it's that way for everyone. Now, if T1 lines would just come down to the sub $100 price tag, the world would be a better place!
-------UPDATE--------
Well, I've been with what is now ATT Yahoo! for over 4 years now. Great reliable service. Glitches have been rare. Can highly recommend. Unfortunately, my time with ATT Yahoo! is going to come to an end as soon as Verizon Fios comes to the Rockwall area. I cannot wait! My only wish is that ATT would have done the same thing as Verizon and invested in Fiber to the home. Right now I'm paying more for an inferior service with ATT. Granted ATT's dsl service is stable, however it cannot compete with Verizon Fios. Please hurry Verizon!
-------UPDATE 10-07-08--------
With Verizon Fios and ATT Uverse expanding their reach, I've had to adjust my review of ATT Yahoo here. Although I am pleased, for what they offer for the price, it is not competitive with the times. Compared to the speeds and prices for Verizon Fios and ATT Uverse internet service, it surprises me ATT Yahoo remains has pricey as it is. Customers will remember that when Verizon Fios comes to this area.
ATT Yahoo is still a good service for me however. No problems except the occasional burp that lasts maybe a minute or 2. "Is the internet burping?" is a regular statement in this household. Most of the time it's solid, but can be frustrating if you're working. Seeing as how I've never had to call customer service except upon initial setup, I'm pretty pleased.
As much as I'd like to see Verizon Fios come to the Rockwall, TX area, it looks as though it will be years before that happens. Since ATT Uverse is being offered on the northern part of town, I'm guessing it will be the next best offering here soon for Rockwall residents.

| internet access in Rockwall I generally don't like Charter, but I have been lucky with their internet access for several years here in Rockwall, TX. I recently upgraded from 5Mbit to 10Mbit for $5 more a month. Their internet access in my neighborhood (Lakeside Village), is very stable...and I only notice a short outage about once a year. Recently AT&T Uverse was made available in our neighborhood...so you might want to look into that as an option if it is available at your house. If you want their internet access, I believe they will force you to get TV service bundled...but they have some nice highspeed internet options. Their HDTV service's limitation on 1 HD stream at a time kept me from trying it out...so I will just stick with Dish for my TV service. | |

| ahh Uverse Thanks for the suggestions. It looks as though as of now, Oct 08, that ATT Uverse is only offered in the north part of Rockwall. I'm assuming north of I30, but only speculating as it's not offered at my address or similar addresses south of I30.
I'll definitely be looking forward to new options when Uverse is available in my neighborhood. Although I do wish Verizon Fios was here. A few relatives of mine have Fios and it fills me with envy imagining the time I could save working. Oh well good things come with time. | |

UPDATES at bottom: (Have DSL now instead of ISDN)
I was stuck on 26.4 dial up for years. I heard about ISDN from this forum, and after looking into it decided it was best for me.
SBC provides the line and I also use their SBC/YAHOO for an ISP.
Compared to DSL or Cable it is VERY expensive for a 128/128 connection, but it has great pings to games. (30-80 avg ping on Battlefield 1942 and Quake 3) My average speed is 121/121.
I signed up for the 2yr deal so my monthly charge for the line is about $65/month. I also had to sign up for an ISP and it is about $20 / month.
It was installed on time and worked perfectly. (their end at least, I had some learning that had to be done for networking the first time)
SBC/Yahoo knows nothing about ISDN and they don't officially support it. So tech support is non existant on the ISP side. I have not had any issues with the line itself so I can't really say anything about that. When I ordered it though, the lady taking my order was very knowledgable and helpful. When the guy installed it, he also was very knowledgable and answered all my annoying questions.
I use a 3COM OfficeConnect modem/router 3c892. Dynammic IP
If you got the money, and you love to game, and you have no way of getting DSL or Cable ISDN is great.
UPDATE: Got DSL finally, but wanted to leave the ISDN info up
UPDATE #2: Upgraded to 3M DSL, pretty much flawless so far. My old house where I could only get 26.4 Dial-up is now finally has DSL (only took9 years...)

9-23-2008: Well, it's back to Charter cable for services again. I moved in June, and the DSL that was available here absolutely sucked on speed. So out the door with it. I'm a Charter employee, so had the TV and the internet installed, and it's running just fine. I jumped to 16G for the internet, and it's awesome! AT&T doesn't have anything close to that, needless to say.

DSL service is supposed to be 1536/384 for $25.00/month, but sustaining those speeds is a hopeless endeavor. Connection is randomly timed out at least half the time, so even accessing Web pages is an exercise in frustration. AT&T has tried and failed to fix the problem twice. Supplied DSL modem is a SpeedStream 4100 with mandatory NAT, which makes configuring Web apps tricky if not impossible.
