I ordered the 128kbps up/1.5mbps down package from Southwetern Bell on July 1st. My install date was set as July 13th. The order process was good, but I was misled about the fact that they said they supported Linux, but in fact appear they do not. The installer came out bright and early on July 13th (around 8:15). He hooked up the splitter, but got nothing from the DSL. He called the central office, and I had not been hooked up. After a 45 minute wait, we were hooked up. His test set would sync up, but the Alcatel 1000 would not. It turned out they hooked me up to the wrong port on the DSLAM. After they got that straight, the Alcatel sync'd right up, and I was in business. That sucker is FAST. I really like it. When I went to set up my email, the main box did not get setup right. A quick call to tech support straightened that out. I feel it is well worth the money. In the end, it only cost me about $5.00 more per month, since I was able to drop the second phone line I had.

Hi!
I ordered the Enhanced DSL package that comes with 384K up and 6mbps down. I average a good 3-5mbps every day. I am using almost all 5 of my ips up at the moment All the email boxes and aliases are already gone:) The webpage is currently being utilized. I have not had to call technical support yet. DSL equipment is ok with the Alcatel 1000 although I wish they would give me their dual-port ethernet router. So far so good, I will recommend them to anyone who wants DSL access as ISP or Telco.

Hi! Here is my personal review/opinion of southwestern bell's service to me so far.
Ordering Process: I called them, spoke to a person who setup a date for the line test and loop qualification. The lady advised me that from what she showed I should be able to get in with no problems but nonetheless she also advised me that there was a 5% chance that I would not be able to get it. A week later (right on schedule by the way) SouthWestern Bell called me and said everything was great so far. We setup an installation date. Right before we set an installation date we discussed price points, speeds, and how we could afford to pay for it. We finally decided to go on with the 384K up, 6Mbps down plan or enhanced plan.
Installation Process: The installer had a window set from 8:00am to 8:00pm. The installer came out at approximately 12:30pm. He installed the splitter outside the house, installed the phone jack. He plugged in the alcatel 1000 adsl modem(terminal adapter)in his laptop for the test as my machine was still installing windows 98:). It pulled it up just fine. We went to a download test page and the test was slow at that time for whatever reason. He gave me what I needed, the static ips, the gateway, the dns servers, mail servers, etc.
Test Process: The next two to three days I spent optimizing my connection and finally just changed the recvd window to 64240 which speeded up most of uploads and downloads by 25%. I went from a 460k from swbell's ftp at 3:00am on a wednesday to 600k from swbell's ftp at 3:05am on the same day. Most other sites were 25% faster. A couple of other tests acknowledged my adsl properly: 1)»www.bc.sympatico.ca/bc_local/speedtest/ = 4.9Mbps 2)»bamazed.bconnected.net/ = 5.6Mbps 3)»computingcentral.msn.com/topics/···test.asp = 6.2Mbps The above results were an average of 10 tests polled. The results certainly show I was getting what I paid for.
Extras: The extras I got from Swbell were 5 static ips, which are all being used at the moment, 3 email boxes (also in use), and 5 email aliases (2 in use currently). I also get an dial-up account for an emergency (I guess), and a web page account (which I might never use).
A month later: Everything had been going well until I woke one morning to see that my modem had a steady red light. I turned it off and left it off for a minute and turned it back on, I opened it up to make sure that no connections or nothing had burned out. I called technical support and after holding for 15 minutes got hold of someone who believed me and sent a technician dispatched to my house for the morning. He arrived in the morning and I suggested he try a different modem and see if that fixes it. He did and the problem was resolved. One complaint about the equipment: The Alcatel 1000 is outdated especially the "AA" series, Southwestern Bell/Pacific Bell need to replace these with the newer SpeedTouch series modems from Alcatel or even another company(Efficient Networks anyone).
Besides the modem blowing out and the dns servers went down for a few hours one day while I was at work trying to access my machine at home, I really have no complaints for SouthWestern Bell except to replace that darn Alcatel 1000. I would recommend Swbell to others because so far I have a positive response and we will take care of you attitude.
