    I have done a lot of VOIP comparison shopping. My criteria has been low cost with e911 service. I wanted anyone to be able to grab the phone and dial 911 in an emergency (just in case.)

    Callcentric charges a small recurring fee for e911, but since I know local municipalities charge for this, I understand that callcentric needs to pass along this cost to me.

    I also got a 'dirt cheap did'. This costs 2.95 per month and gives me unlimited incoming calls.

    I also use a Google Voice number I have associated with this 'dirt cheap did' to give me a true local number to give out to family & friends. I also use Google Voice to make my outbound calls so I get unlimited outbound and inbound calling for less than $5.00 per month with e911 support. Truly an amazing deal!

    I haven't found this value or reliability from any other VOIP provider, so I am very pleased with Callcentric. Their website is top notch and they provide a lot features for their price point.

    11/3/09 Update

    Same great service as when I first tried the service. There was one outage, but they had already planned (and emailed) an upgrade to address their increasing capacity.

    Would like to see simultaneous ring, but everything else is great.

    I tried the service before I transferred my main number, and was not disappointed. I now have other "Dirt Cheap DIDs" that use SIP URI pointing to different providers. Another one points to their FAX service and has worked great.

    Call quality is excellent. I have only called US numbers so I cannot comment on other countries.

    The website has a lot of useful information and is well organized.

    Call Treatments allow me to redirect telemarketers (one at a time) to an error message. Call logs help me find the number.

    When I email support, even at 2:00am Sunday night, I receive a response within 30 minutes even on low priority problems.

    UPDATE: 2009-10-20
    I have been with CallCentric (CC) now for over 6 months and I am still one very happy customer. As a complete phone service, they have been a very reliable company - I still have absolutely no regrets porting my numbers over to CC from my previous traditional phone company!!

    I had an issue with quality at one point and spent several hours with customer support only to discover that the fault was actually on my end. Just as an fyi - the quality problem was coming from my old cordless phone system but once I upgraded to the new Panasonic Dect 6.0 cordless phones the quality issue disappeared - just a tip if you are having call quality problems with any VOIP and are still using the older 2.4Hz cordless phones.

    While some have complained about CC US rates, I have found you need to evaluate the total package of each provider and you will find that CC holds up easily in the top tier of VOIP Providers. Also, note that to get free 1800/1866/1877 with CC just dial **275* before the toll free number (a minor inconvenience) or better yet just add the code to your Dial Plan in your ATA (and the inconvenience disappears!).

    Overall, CallCentric remains my top pick of the VoIP Providers I have tried and anyone looking for a serious VoIP Provider should consider them. There are several other good services out there so in the long run it will come down to your individual taste.

    I switched from Verizon to CallCentric about 3 weeks ago and have found their service to be excellent. While slightly cheaper US rates can be found with other VOIP services, I have also made a lot of international calls to Africa and when all rates are considered CallCentric comes out to be a lot cheaper for me than other VOIP services. Also if you make a lot of local US calls then the unlimited plans are great especially the inbound plans.

    Their website is the easiest I found to navigate through. They have all the regular features such as call blocking, anonymous call rejection, do not disturb, international call blocking, 99 speed dialers, etc. There is also a Call Treatment option that allows you to set up custom rules to have additional control over call blocking which is very good compared to other services I looked at - actually much much better than most. I still think there is room for improvement in the Call Treatment section for this features to be exceptional but for now it is still a great to-have.

    Customer Support is super with questions being answered rather promptly. I am now in the process of porting my 2 Verizon numbers.

    So far, I am very happy especially as I am getting great service for less!!!

    Quick update. Nothing has changed my opinion about this company. They do a decent job, but charge too much. I cannot understand what their problem is - misplaced resources, high cost of labor?

    I will continue to use them as a fallback until the money in my account runs out, and then find a cheaper fallback.

    In the last year or two, a reliable, good-sounding connection has become standard among all but the junkiest providers. You should not have to pay a relatively high price for good performance. But if you use Callcentric as a fallback, that is what you are doing. Even if you use it as your main voip provider, you are still overpaying compared to Voip.ms, and, I'm sure, others.

    What value for money are you getting in that case? It seems to me, not a great deal. Because of that, I have lowered my estimate in the 'Value for Money' category.

    Callcentric provides good service, but I can't see using it except as a fallback, because it is too expensive compared with voip.ms, and probably others.

    VOIP.MS has every feature that callcentric has, except for calling card, and in addition has incoming call handling that is practically like having an asterisk server - callcentric cannot touch it. VOIP.MS also has simultaneous ring which callcentric does not have. And VOIP.MS has large numbers of DIDs, as many as callcentric. Callcentric sounds good, but no better than voip.ms; it is reliable, but no more reliable than voip.ms.

    Yet callcentric charges more for outgoing calls: 1.98 cents/minute, vs. voip.ms's 1.05 - 1.49 cents/minute; it has a higher setup fee for DIDs (3.95 for callcentric vs .50 to .99 for VOIP.MS).

    Having used both vosps for some time, I feel that callcentric is asking too much for what it provides. It is not competing, and will not get my business except as a fallback.

    You're comparing voip.ms - who's support has been rated pretty poorly in the past - to CallCentric - who has some of the best support ratings in the industry.

    Support costs money, it's a fact. You can't provide quality support at voip.ms's prices. You get what you pay for. While voip.ms chose to give you cheap prices and questionable support - CallCentric chose to give you full quality support at higher prices. They're not trying to rip you off - they're trying to make enough money to pay for their support engineers.

    I can't comment on past support problems with VOIP.MS, but from my experience over the past year - half a dozen questions, problems, or suggestions that I made to support - I was answered usually within hours and always to the point. And I think other recent reviews of VOIP.MS agree with that.

    When I have contacted callcentric support, I received the same good support service - but it was no better than that of VOIP.MS.

    Apparently you can.

    I don't think they are trying to rip people off; my guess is that they are inefficient in some way compared to VOIP.MS.

    Callcentric is not aiming at being a budget voip provider. Nor would I want them to be. I would rather pay a few cents more and have them around, rather than see them fail like many other voip carriers.

    In the end, may the best voip company win. Cheap and nasty never survives.

    Rate comparisons

    Thoughtful review.

    I rather agree with you regarding CallCentric's per-minute outbound rates. They do need to rethink that issue a bit. The rest of their rates are good overall.

    I don't ever see CC as being an aggressive competitor on price. It's not what they're about.

    I think that Voip.MS and CallCentric are both good outfits, somewhat different from each other, but each is a market leader in its own way.

    Rates are interesting. Some folks use OneSuite. There are various ways to call on OneSuite but the rate for USA if using the OneSuite Voip is 2.5 cents! They must have some happy customers, but wow.....

    When I deal with a Voip company, I want to be sure they can stay around. So while you may think I'm nuts, I worry if a company's rates are too low. The bear preparing for the winter is better off being too fat than too skinny.

    I view things as follows:

    CallCentric: Nordstrom

    Voip.MS: Target (in the good sense)

    Some others: Wal-Mart

    And others: K-Mart

    Voip.MS, like Target, has come a long way. I use both companies for some things.

    But if you want your wife to be unquestionably comfortable with your home phone service and with your dress shirt, a case can be made for CallCentric and for Nordstrom, respectively.

    And yes, having said that, I wish the outbound minutes and the shirts were both a little cheaper.

    ADDED IN EDIT:

    I forgot to mention: Besides customer service, one place where CallCentric really shines is free Voip (SIP) calling. Nobody does it better when it comes to supporting SipBroker, direct IP calling, peering with other networks, and now the new iNum calling. Some customers will not use these features, but for others they add much value.

    I'm not familiar with either Nordstrom's or Target, but I think I see where you are going, since I am familiar with walmart and kmart.

    I disagree that there is a low-quality feel about VOIP.MS in comparison with callcentric (if that is in fact what you are implying).

    If I had any reservations about VOIP.MS, they would be based on the question that I suspect most people have who use their own ATAs to hook up with a vosp, namely: Is this vosp going to be around in six months? Or: Is this vosp going to sound consistently good; will there be frequent outages?

    I don't know the exact dates but I know that callcentric has been around longer than VOIP.MS; and with the present state of voip, you tend to get a warmer and fuzzier feeling with a vosp that has been around for 2 or 3 years compared to one that has been around for 1 or 2 years.

    Personally, I don't have any problem with using VOIP.MS, or recommending it to other people, because I believe they are in it for the long haul. That's based on the improvements that they continue to make and the sophistication of their features - call routing, sub-accounts, etc., and on their consistent sound quality and reliability.

    But I can understand why others would feel more comfortable with the longer track record of callcentric, even if it costs a bit more and has fewer features than VOIP.MS.

    Just some historical background:

    Both companies have been around for a while.

    New York's CallCentric (formerly Accatel) got going in late 2001-early 2002, I believe.

    Montreal's Voip.MS (Swiftvox) was launched in 2007, but their team had been involved in telecom and/or internet ventures since around 2001 as well.

    Both companies bring good things to the table, just as both Tiger Woods and Yong-Eun Yang bring good things to golf.

    Quality companies enhance the whole industry, even as competitors.

    (Troubled companies like SunRocket or Vonics have the opposite effect).

    The CallCentric guys and the Voip.MS guys would probably enjoy sitting down together for beers.

    But which beer brand should they choose?
    Brooklyn Lager or Montreal's Apricot Wheat Ale?

    Callcentric Support +++

    Last week I could not make outbound calls (busy signal) using my SPA2102.

    How many hours is this going to take to figure this out ?

    I looked at all the various screens, really it comes down to the SIP settings. Couldn't get a read on the problem and was ready to do a factory reset and add the values all over again.

    Contacted CC support with the problem. Response in 20 min. They focused right in on the problem "SIP Remote Party I.D." drop down box should be set to "NO". The default setting was yes and for some reason it reverted to it.

    There's only 150 drop down / settings on this ATA ? They got the fix right off the bat. Who would have known that ? I checked Linksys and Google. Not a blip about this setting.

    I'm a little tired of the xxx hrs of sit down time figuring some of this out. Not with CC however.

    I contacted VOIP.MS support because of a small problem I found in the IVR. Got a response in 15 minutes. They had it on their todo list, but pushed the fix out to their servers based on my email.

    20 minutes after I contacted them, the problem had been fixed. I have never seen anything like it.

    Callcentric support may be as good, or almost as good, but they don't even have an IVR, or simultaneous ring, or sub-accounts, or a 6-second billing increment, or calling queues, or a sophisticated website that puts every aspect of their service at your fingertips.

    They do not begin to match VOIP.MS's call handling, and their North American rates and DID prices do not compete well with VOIP.MS's.

    If you don't need the features that callcentric is missing, and you don't mind paying a bit more, then stick with callcentric, but I can't see it myself.

    You raise several good points!

    I agree that CC should try to incorporate some of those features. That's what good competition is about.

    On the other hand, Voip.MS is not friendly to IP calling, peering, SIPBroker, or iNum. To me, these are very important features for providers, but of course perspectives differ.

    I've never had any problems with CC. It just works.

    Last year, I did have repeated problems with Voip.MS for outbound calls. I think that they have come a long way since then, and they have apparently beefed up their support.

    I find CC's website to be quite functional and elegant. The Voip.MS website is rather turgid.

    The thing is, they are BOTH fine providers, each with pros and cons. Sometimes you need both waffles and cereal (and fruit also---that's F9) as part of a balanced breakfast.

    If I praise CallCentric, it should not be construed as knocking Voip.MS. They are both good folks.

    In my personal interactions with CallCentric, they are almost fanatical about protecting the quality of their service. It strikes me that it's much more than a job for them. Now, that may also be true elsewhere, but I know it is for CC.

    It also bespeaks a conservative attitude that may explain why they make changes carefully and gradually. Their primary concern is stability.

    They actually do two things that make them lose business! Those are: a very conservative interpretation of 911 requirements, and urging people to not rush to port in numbers. CC probably drives some customers away because of this, but it reflects their almost religious fervor.

    Simultaneous Ring

    I've used CC on-and-off over the past couple of years and the lack of simultaneous ring has been a show stopper for me. While their feature set is not as strong as voip.ms, it is more complete than most others.

    If CC would offer simultaneous ring and sub-accounts, they would be a stronger competitor.

    What can I say, finally a VOIP company that gets it. I have been through A to Z in voip companies and was looking for a simple BYOD service that is not some dodgy basement company. With call centric I have received more than that. Platinum service with extremely reasonable pricing.

    At first I was skeptical about their per minute pricing but when I ran the figures I realized I have been getting ripped off by the other providers. Especially with their unlimited plans. Their DID price is also extremely reasonable.

    Porting my number was painless and contacting support was a breeze. I usually cringe at having to deal with support staff who either don't know what they are on about or sound like a automated response. Definitely not the case with call centric. Never want to go through a sunrocket situation again.

    The cloned 2 line feature would also be nice.

    Bottom Line: At this stage I am extremely happy with their service and customer service. They will save you money.

    UPDATE (March - 25th) - Just received an email that they now offer CallerID with CNAME. What a pleasant surprise. With a range of other new nifty features. This company is probably the best voip and telco I have dealt with across 2 continents. End to end excellence. I have to thank the person who recommended I use them a while back. Best move I made. Keep up the fantastic work guys.

    Update (Oct - 17th) Still going strong. Swapped a did from one account to another with out any issues. Just so used to the nope cannot do it from other providers. Once again Callcentric delivered.

    I'm new to VOIP in general and Callcentric specifically. However, I can say that in researching which VOIP service to try, Callcentric was the winner not only because of positive reviews I read from others but because they were one of the few VOIP providers who didn't have a website that is totally cheesy. What is it with VOIP providers who make their websites look like they should be selling fake jewelry on late night TV? More substantively, Callcentric has an unlimited international calling plan and they don't try to saddle you with their idea of the correct equipment to use. You get to buy whatever SIP phone you want.

    When testing out the service I first used a cheap Grandstream adapter and my old analog phone. It worked perfectly, but the sound quality was noticeably lower than POTS. After getting my new Polycom IP phone working with Callcentric however, I was completely floored by how perfect the quality is. Much better than POTS and much better than the enterprise grade solution I have at work.

    For the only real negative, I would say that the website instructions for configuring a Polycom phone were not comprehensive and required me to engage in several hours of trial and error and finally come to an intuitive solution to make it work. I succeeded in the end, but the missing steps from their tutorial could (and should) be easily remedied.

    Perhaps I'll try to update this review once I have more user experience.

    Interesting thoughts about CallCentric's website. It is indeed very straightforward and businesslike.

    Some VoIP companies are Ginger. CallCentric is Mary Ann.

    Perhaps that pdf might be helpful to someone, but it wouldn't have helped me. I simply have one phone plugged into my home switch sitting behind a router. The problem with the Callcentric tutorial is that it didn't say that one must first follow the guidelines for setting up a standalone phone and that those guidelines are not part of the administrative guide. It was necessary to hunt down something called "Quick Tip 44011" on the Polycom website and follow those instructions before doing any of the steps as directed by Callcentric.

    And a question: without a boot server, any ideas on how to implement firmware upgrades?

    Y'know, this bolsters my point about Polycom. A quick tip should be numbered something like #3 or #17. If they are up to #44011, they are nuts. "44011" isn't a quick tip, it's a postal zip code!

    Fortunately, CallCentric does have pretty good instructions for the devices most commonly used, such as Linksys/Sipura, GS Handytone, SNOM, Asterisk, Trixbox.

    Regarding firmware upgrades, one would hope that the guys who sold you the Polycom device should provide assistance in such matters.

    all in all I'm really happy with call centric. I have a dirt cheap did with them and pay as you go outgoing. The 1.50/month for e911 is a little annoying as I don't use my line that much however the whole "package" is a good deal for what I'm getting.

    CC was my 2nd VSP and at first I was put off by the E911 fee and that they proxy the audio on calls. The idea of my phone calls having to go all the way to NY from CA seemed to me to be a recipe for disaster for voip calls with high latency and many potential points of failure for a UDP stream crossing the country. I even at one point wrote to CC support asking them to close out my account, that I'd never use it or fund it. They wrote back saying they would keep it open unless I insisted. I didn't care as I had no plan to ever use it again.

    Well I'm happy to say I was mistaken. After putting up with downtime from a well-known free did provider, I took a chance on a dirt-cheap did that took about 4 days to activate since I used Paypal. Once it was working I set it up for GV and tried it out. After a few days there was no going back. The audio quality was better than I expected even after a cross country trip and the latency wasn't enough to really affect the audio. I enabled CNAM and it worked great with all the numbers I called from except my cellphone that showed a name that isn't mine, but as cellphones usually show WIRELESS CALLER I think my number may have been ported from a landline some time ago and I got it.

    Today I changed from IP Freedom to Pay-per-call and on a test call my outbound CID was my GV number as I had requested shortly after signing up. Support has always been helpful and courteous even when I was a free customer. I don't know if its standard policy for CC not to close accounts even when the customer asks, but in this case it eventually got them a paying customer.

    Update 10/13/09 After having used the service for a few weeks and tweaking the settings on my PAP2T and 2Wire modem/router I am satisfied with the service except for the per minute pricing. I have figured out what my average outbound usage will be and i've decided to move on to a VSP with lower rates and most of the features I'd use. CC has rock solid service and features and I still rate it highly.

    October 12- All is still great. I can always count on Callcentric to avoid telemarketers day or night with the call treatments. Never be bothered while sleeping again.

    Using Callcentric from Island Seas hotel (Bahamas) directly from my iPhone with a help of SipPhone app. Still can't believe that all my calls are rated at the same rates as from home (zero)... It's like the rest of other "all inclusive" things I have here. Life is wonderful

    I've been using Callcentric for about 3 years now and they have been providing a very convenient service for my needs. I'm not a telecommunications whiz, but I was able to find everything I needed right from the home screen. My favorite feature is the call treatment. I set it when I don't want to be disturbed or when I go away. I use two settings. One that forwards all my calls straight to voicemail when I go to sleep and one that forwards all my calls to my cellphone when I'm not home. I also like being notified when I have new voice messages. My phone doesn't let me know unless I go into the messaging menu, so I often miss important messages. Having them on my Callcentric home screen allows me to see and hear all of my messages as soon as they're left, and I don't even have to be home for it. Overall, I think Callcentric is a great provider of the simple things that make life just a bit easier.

    We use Callcentric service at home 4 years already.
    We use it a lot for international calling to Russia, Uzbekistan, Israel and other
    And in USA and the call quality is excellent .
    Their website is great and let's you control everything you'd need from it.
    They have a lot of features and adding new once all the time
    Excellent customer support.
    Reliable and feature reach provider - I don't think there is anyone else who is more suitable to my needs (and in my budget range).

    Still very happy user - so far so good; I'm using call treatments now - would be even
    happier if they implemented simultaneous or multi-ring feature.
