I have used a verizon air card at work for over a year the speed of the cards run from 400-700 k in this area. The price is high but it is not that much slower than my dsl at home. I got the card on ebay and called to set up service. The CSR was friendly and set the account up in a few minutes. He said it would take about two hours for the card to work. I left for work and when I returned home to try it is was working good.

"Verizon UM175 Broadband Access Modem"
| |
I live in a rural area in Texas, can't get DSL here. I have had GotSky Satelitte dish for my internet service. It got where it was so slow, I had to do something. Cancelled with them. Called Verizon and ordered a Broadband Access Modem from them. Fast service, device was fast most of the time, but got National access some of the time, which really slowed it down. I had a UM175. Well I sent this one back and went to Verizon store and got another modem, a USB727. It was always slow. One of the devices kept getting National Access all of the time, even though I have and am in a Broadband Access coverage. Finally took it back to store and they gave me another device, USB727, well I got home and it still stayed in National Access most of the time, was really slow most of the time. Took it back and got a Verizon UM175 modem, because I did remember that the other device I had in the beginning was alot faster. (it has a built in antenna, which allows it to get a better signal, I guess. I have been using it for a couple of days, now and extremely pleased, it has been fast all of the time, and doesn't go to the National Access very often at all, (maybe not at all) but it is still fast. I am very well pleased. I had to pay $50 more to get this device. And it it is well worth it. Hope this helps someone else.

ive had this service for about 2 years now, and it just keeps getting worse. as more and more people get on the ev-do network, the service is getting continually less reliable and slower.
60$ a month is REEAALLLY bad for it being about 1mbps at the most.

This box just moved from Florence, MT to Stevensville, MT and they do not have Bresnan internet up here so I have to use Verizon Wireless Broadband.
The service is a little slow but usefull considering the location. I have not truly attempted to try streaming video and radio but it is looking or acting iffy. . .out here I can only get a max of two bars of service. That is a good day.
I am using the USB Internet Card purchased at Bestbuy The current rate is 5 GB $59.99 a month and $0.25 after that. Last month for just genral internet use I only used 300 meg.
I think to be honest because of the cell tower reception qwest dsl might be the better choice for the location but other than that its niice to have.
You have to think about the location. I am still waiting for the day they put a line from Spokane to Missoula and down the Bitteroot.
Considering I have voice service there are no discounts and no bundles like other services in the area. But soon brenan will be comming soon.

I had post paid Verizon service about 3 years ago, and I was paying $79 a month for 450 anytime minutes, 9pm nights and weekends, 300 text messages, and unlimited data. I loved the reliability of the service, but I got so sick of paying the bill. It got to the point where I was occasionally getting overages, and I just had to cancel because it was totally out of hand with the bill. About 4 months ago, my Sprint Motorola Q died, and I needed a temporary phone, so I reactived my VX8300 on prepaid, and used it for a while until I got my new phone. I realized the internet was faster than the free internet my apartment was giving me, much faster. So I figured with no contract, I could afford to lose a little cash if I got kicked off for using it as my 24 hour a day internet connection. I have been online for 4 months with this connection always online, and have not been kicked off. I refill it every 30 days with $30, and I have no problems. I love the speed, and since I am not sending text, or talking on it, I never have a problem with the bill. Thumbs up for this setup, and I do recommend it if you know what you're doing, and you have this phone. If so, ask me how to enable your phone for this wonderful service!

I travel for work in the NYC, NJ, PA and DC area and I often need to get access to my corporate email and CRM system. For years I've been stopping into Starbucks or Borders for the horror show that is TMobile.
This is my first day and I find the service OK... but expensive.
More to follow.

I ordered my USB Broadband online. While I have only had it for a little over two months It was easy to install and has worked like a champ every time I use it. While the ads seem to say it is unlimited service for around 54.00 I did see that the service is limited to 4g per month. That is not bad for just surfing the web, but if you were to do a lot of downloads it could start adding up after the 4gig.

Ive been using Verizons online services since they first started their 1xRTT network. Ive progressed to EV-DO rev 0 with the Sierra Wireless card, moved to the internal Dell 5700 mini card and now to the Dell 5720 Rev-A card. Im also a network and software developer.
The internal cards from Dell are nice because I dont worry about snapping off the card jutting out the laptop; but the software for them isnt quite as good as Verizons.
*** The following is somewhat out of date ***
If I dont shut down the connection and exit the connection software when I hibernate the laptop, often I cant use the card again until I reboot. This is getting better with subsequent updates, but its not perfect yet.
---------------------------------------------------------- Updated 6/7/2008 -------------------------
*** There is a new version of this software from Dell, however it isn't listed as an update for the D820 laptop I have. It is, however, listed for the D830. I installed the update anyway given that the hardware is essentially the same. It works like a champ ****
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------
Although these cards connect to antennas built into the frame of the laptop, reception does not appear to be any better than using the slot on demand cards.
Overall, using EV-DO from Verizon Wireless is excellent. The real speed that you feel when youre using it is comparable to a home DSL connection. Ive tested in many hotel rooms, and usually the EV-DO from Verizon performs better than the hotel network connection.
Rev-0 EV-DO is like a low end DSL with speeds usually around 800kbps download and only 60kbps upload. Moving to Rev-A is awesome, as the download speed tend to average closer to 1000kbps and the upload speeds are much better. I know Im seeing over 120kbps and I think I may be seeing as much as 400+ some times (not enough info yet).
I travel, and being able to open the laptop in any cab, airport waiting room, lobby, restaurant, or whatever and never have to pay the extortion for a hotspot is sweet. Its just there. It is much cheaper to pay the monthly fee to Verizon than pay in each hotel or hotspot and it is much more universally available. It is also nice to know what Im connecting to. I dont like to hunt down open hotspots because you dont know whos using them to capture data.
The best thing is the hundreds of hours spent waiting for my kids at one soccer practice or another; while Im just there with nothing to do for two hours (they dont like parents at the practices to be involved). Open the laptop and Ive got DSL speeds.
