****Update 10/23/09 Internet and TV have been great so far. TV I still have a phantom issue during heavy rain tons of errors and pixelation. Also get pixelation when it's not raining but not all the time. Matt has been helping me track it down for months now but still nothing. Otherwise since last post they upgraded the TV part for News & Sports Multiview and Mediashare. I keep getting e-panel invites. Sounds like AT&T is testing allowing us to watch recorded shows from our PC's or Mobile phones down the road.
Otherwise still very happy. Just wish they would increase the upload a bit. Hopefully with the new profile coming sometime it will. I still think they need to lower pricing on the internet and get rid of a tier. Just have 3, 6, 12 & 18. Honestly no need for 1.5 anymore.

Well Internet and TV has been pretty good, recently I get pauses on live and recorded TV every so often. Basically it's as if I hit the pause button and hit it again. Voice I haven't had the fast busy/loss of line in awhile. I do have an issue that can't seem to be explained. When I max out my 10 meg internet connection, downloading large .iso files for work. My voice becomes choppy/static sounding to me. The other end says it just sounds like a really bad connection. Some say it's static others say it's a loss of voice basically. It's as if they hear every other word.
AT&T seems to care less about having all three services with them. As far as giving bigger bundled discounts to it's customers and even quadruple services.
Not sure I will be keeping the voice service or not. I just know with Comcast Digital Voice it seemed much more stable compared to U-Voice at least for me. Hopefully we can get this figured out or I will be going to another voip provider.
Also I forgot to add the reason my taxes were so high was because of a pro rated month plus a full month. I am only paying $5.28 worth of taxes on $30 VoIP which is about what I was paying with Comcast Digital Voice.

Went to go use the phone this morning and can't dial out get a fast busy once the number is dialed. Same thing happened a couple weeks ago. So far in two months this is not very good service. I have a call into support and am awaiting one back. Using my cell for a conference call right now.
I am waiting for my next bill to double check the taxes. Someone suggested since I was billed twice, pro rated it might be higher.
They got it working a little over an hour ago. Seems to be the same issue the past few times which results in them resetting the voice profile. They are coming out to replace the RG tomorrow.

I still hadn't heard from anyone. Other then someone calling the house yesterday and talking to my wife. Of course no name/number left.
I called back into billing today and talked to a supervisor and pretty much the same story.
He said once you have all 3 services the double pack discount goes away for those of us that had it. As far as taxes go again he couldn't say much but that MI, WI & IN are all charged the USF fee. I think it is complete BS that AT&T charges the USF for a digital phone service when Call Vantage never did. Then when you talk to lower end people they say it's just part of the charges.
For those with Call Vantage I would keep the service as long as you can.
I am going to start looking at VoIP providers and a good QoS router. Depending on what I find U-Voice will just disappear or I will completely dump AT&T and go back to Comcast, shuttering the thought.

I got my first bill with U-Voice and am not a happy camper. They took off my double pack $10 discount. Reason given when I called in is since I ordered a 3rd service it gets removed. Then they turn around and charge me the discount ontop of the bill. My taxes have 4 lines now vs 1 and the 4 total $9.52 just because of a $30 VoIP. I have never had that much in taxes with Vonage, Call Vantage or Comcast Digital. I have put numerous calls into AT&T with promies of getting calls back and nothing so far. Two tickets have been opened up concerning the discount and taxes. Nothing so far and those were submitted last thursday 10/16. I am going to give it till the end of the week and if I hear nothing back I will be cancelling U-Voice and possibly U-Verse altogther.
AT&T IMO has no idea how to treat customers when dealing with the U-Voice product. When it was TV & Internet no problem but when you talk about triple play package they have no bundling discount at all. The entire poing of bundling is to get more of a discount overall.
I hate to event think but I may be going back to Comcast. I will update my review once it has to come to some kind of conclusion.
****Update 9/24/08
Things have still been working great. I left Call Vantage for U-Voice since it went live in the chicagoland area and it's $30 for unlimited voice. I had it installed on 9/11 and so far no problems. I do like not needing a secondary QoS router like I needed towards the end with Call Vantage. My two issues right now are the login process to check voicemails via the web is to long. The portal for Vonage, Call Vantage and even Comcast was faster then U-Verse. Secondly, they don't offer the ability to have your voicemails emailed to you like Vonage or Call Vantage. Overall very happy and I seem to have more features then Call Vantage.
Also I updated my price so my package includes U300, Max Internet (10/1.5) and U-Voice all for $154 before taxes.

I have had service for a month now and no major complaints. I had to call support back out do to my basement STB being on the 59 coax and causing issues. Came out and put cat5 in for me and been working great.
I have dropped POTS and went to Call Vantage that's been working great as well.
I got my first bill today and it wasn't completely correct with what I was told with discounts. When I was having install issues a rep decided to upgrade me for free from the u200 to u400 free for 6 months. Well they only applied a $20 credit instead of $40 which would make it free. I called up and explained what happened 5 minutes later all was taken care of.
Latency isn't a big issue for me but I do look forward to them removing it one day and opening the internet pipe a bit more. Overall very glad I dumped comcast!!!
Oh and 1 think my monthly price is based on the u200 and MAX - 10/1.5 internet.

I switched over from comcast. I had all 3 services with them. I saw that NE Illinois went live. So on Monday 1/28 I went to the U-verse site and put in my address. To my surprise it said I could get it. Then I called in to make sure and they said yes we can service you.
Now up until this point DSL has never been an option to far from the CO and no RT's for my area.
We go over everything and I have to order POTS again since VoIP isn't an option yet for U-verse service. We do that and according to the POTS person I should only be paying $8-12 in taxes we shall see. So I order 6/1 internet and u200 and they upgrade me to u300 free for 6 months. I get a $100 visa card for u-verse and $50 for POTS. For the u200 and 6/1 I pay $79 a month.
Install was set for 2/1 from 8-10. Well I call about 9:45 and they call dispatch and it appears a tech was never assigned the case. They get someone to come out from 12-2pm. He shows up about 1pm and I show him the house and NID. He leaves to go to the vrad and crossbox. Comes back after an hour and says he is having problems. So he calls for another I & R tech and he shows up about an hour later. They are both working on the lines and about 6pm they say they are coming out on Saturday to get go over it again.
Saturday 2/2 we were out and I get a call about 12pm from the U-verse tech asking about the install. I told him we would be there in 15 minutes and he said fine as he was going to go find the I & R tech.
I get home and drive over to the vrad. Explain to both what happened since they never got any notes from the day before. After an entire day still no luck and they didn't leave till 6pm again.
This went on from Monday to Thursday. Basically the issue was not being able to get or hold sync at my NID. Then Friday 2/9 we left for out of town but they kept working on it. Saturday 2/9 I get a voicemail from U-verse saying all is set and call back to schedule an appt. I call back later that day and the U-verse person said they hadn't heard back from I & R.
So on Monday 2/11 I called the I & R manager (which I got his card after they left on 2/2 and was in contact through out the week even though I was out of town) and he said all was fixed on 2/8. He said he would call a u-verse manager and have them contact me. About 11am on 2/11 I get a call from the u-verse manager and setup the appt. for 2/15 from 12-2pm.
I get a call about 8:15 saying they had a cancellation and could they come at 9am. I couldn't since I had some conf. calls and needed the internet during that. I call about 11am just to verify all is going well and to see if I can get the 10/1.5 internet. They check and I can so they upgraded me to that over the phone and upgraded me to the u400 for the trouble for 6 months free.
So tech calls about 12:15 says he will be here by 1pm. Shows up we go over everything and by 2:30pm all is working. We got the internet up first and then did the TV's.
I have the 2wire/RG in my furnace room since that's where the phone and cable come to and I have a board with everything mounted down there. I have coax going to the DVR and other setop box. Then a cat5 coming up to my office to the Linksys router which I just made a switch. Wireless is running through the RG/2wire and working fine. Just not used to a 2wire interface so that's taking a bit. Sync rate at the RG/2wire is 62 which is very good.
Speeds are as advertised. I don't have HD but the SD picture seems clearer to my wife and I compared to Comcast Digital cable.
Depending on what my POTS bill is I may switch to Call Vantage.
Over all very happy I stuck with it and the techs were very nice the entire time. One thing folks should realize is this is new technology just like when DSL came out. Some people have very smooth installs and others don't.

| uverse I had uverse u300 and elite internet installed on 9/4/08. The install took about six hours, but it was due to my house wiring thanks to comcast, att replaced it all for free, wires connectors, ect. There was such an improvement over comcast; its cheaper, its faster, more channels, better picture, a 4tuner dvr, all the boxes are hd capable (even though we dont have hd at this point in time), service was friendly, internet speeds were consistant and what they said it would be. We were getting comcast with no digital tv boxes with about 65channels and 6mbps internet for $100 a month. For $109 a month we have 1 4tuner hd/dvr and 3 additional set top boxes and the same 6mbps internet with the U200 package after the free month of the U300. Recently they upgraded to the whole home dvr which lets you access recorded tv from anywhere. Soon it will be able to pause/rewind from any box as well. | |

I switched from Comcast to U-verse, and am very happy thus far with the decision. The TV is much better, offering more channel selection and better HD. The guide is very cool! Order and Install was consistant with AT&T processes. Approximately 30 days+/- from Order to Install
Cisco equipment installed for the DVR and TV Tuner. I am still in the process for formulating a final opinion, but i'm very happy with the decision thus far!

I was previously using AT&T dsl, barely getting the PRO package (3 mb/s). With U-verse, I am easily getting 6 mb/s and could go up to 18 mb/s if I should need that. We are perhaps 1500 to 2000 feet from the VRAD, well within the range for reliable service.
We went to U-verse because of the TV. The alternative is comcast, and we don't much like that company. We were using over-the-air TV, but that became more iffy after the switch to HDTV.
TV is reliable and high quality. Telephone (U-verse voice) is reliable and the voice quality seems as high as the POTS line we previously had. We switched both phone lines over to U-verse, and the cost savings helps pay for the U-verse. Internet service is great.
There were a few temporary glitches for the install. See »Uverse available - what can I expect? for details.
I am using my own router with this service. Unfortunately the supplied RG does not have any DNS settings.

Initial review:
Decided to make the switch from Comcast, to AT&T U-verse. I can say I was happy with the decision. Getting the same channels(U200 package), if not a few more than what Comcast offered. My other option for internet would have been ADSL and going back to DirecTV, which worked great when we did have it for TV.
Ordered the Max internet(10down/1.5up) Getting within 500k of advertised speeds, not bad being about 1500 feet from the VRAD. I noticed the connection seems a little bit more snappy off the line, sort of speak than Comcast was. Pings times are very similar to my old cable connection too.
Install process was scheduled for 2 weeks from the day I placed the order was due to available install date, and my own schedule between work, and a weekend trip I had already planned. The install took about 2.5 hours. Had to rewire the main phone line in the NID, after the installer spent about 15-20mins at the VRAD making his connections. Reused the 2 year old Comcast installed RG6 coax to 2 of the 3 TV's in the house and to the modem/router or Residential Gateway(RG). I assisted the installer in cleanly running the third coax to the third TV, which was no big deal.
The RG is 2wire, and each TV box including the DVR are Motorola boxes. Never had a DVR with Comcast, so this was a major deciding factor in switching to U-verse, besides the 10/1.5 internet. The only downside that cable fanatics will tear on right away is that U-verse currently can run 4 SD-TV's or 2 HD-TV's all at once. No big deal for us, since all our TV's are standard def, and we only have three.
In all, everything is working well. My Vonage line is working great with U-verse too(Linksys PAP2 v2 adapter). Only today there was a brief hiccup with the service, lasted less than a minute and the RG reconnected without having to be power cycled like a cable modem would of have to been.
Had no need to call tech support, I can usually handle most of my issues on my end without any problems. And U-verse is not bundled or locks you into any contract. Which is A+ in my book.

Been having intermittent service interruptions that last under a minute each time. Only happens at most a couple times a day. Gets annoying while watching TV. I believe it to be a issue with the gateway. Need to get a tech out to swap it out. Besides that, things are going well. Still debating whether or not to keep the TV after the first month.

Tech came out a last Thursday and ran his battery of tests on my end. Still finds no issues. I showed the tech the stats in the gateway. After he calls his tech support line, he swaps out the gateway for another. That seemed to fix the issue mostly. Still getting the random DSL Link Retrain. I"m about ready to schedule another tech visit and show them the detailed system log I found in the gateway after the last tech visit. Still willing to get the bugs worked out, because I refuse to go back to Comcast and deal with their slow capped and crippled service.
On the bright side, the Total Home DVR is now available to me, since last Friday 9/26. It works quite well, no need to fight over the TV with the DVR to watch our recordings.

Finally got a line tech, 2 actually in one day, to come out and check out the lines. The first noticed 3 minor things that could have been causing a problem. He cleaned that all up. So far so good. My RG's stats page is looking much better than before. I think it's all ironed out this time. Both line techs noted that I'm getting a very strong signal. The second line tech thinks I should have the RG connected by Cat5 instead of RG6. But from reading on the forums, and reviews here either works fine. The techs were happy to see that I was willing to work with them to get the issues fixed, because there was no way in heck I was going back to Comcast.
I updated the monthly cost. It's a dollar less than what we were paying with Comcast. but we have a third TV hooked up, a DVR, faster internet(was on 6/1.5 w/Comcast), and total home DVR for nearly the same price. Plus got the first month free, and $200 bucks cash back. Still a great deal.

Everything still running great, TV and internet. No further issues with the service randomly dropping out. Decided not to switch to U-voice. Still keeping our current VOIP service for the time being.

It's been a while and I'd figured it was time for an update. Everything still running solid ever since the line tech paid a visit. Have found no reason to upgrade to the Max18 internet speed tier. Max10 is working great, still consistent speed wise. Ping times are still similar to what I saw with Comcast. U200 for the TV is been plenty for us. THDVR is very nice. All in all still pleased with U-verse. The only downside is the bandwidth caps they want to slap on the service. At this time they are only testing it in 2 markets. Thankfully not mine, yet. Once again still keeping our current VOIP service for the time being.

New year, new update! Everything still going great. I think the ping times have gotten a little lower then since when I originally signed up. Not leaps and bounds but easily below 50ms on 2 MI speedtest.net servers. Still on 10/1.5 tier and U200 Also enjoying the Weather On Demand service. Great for former Comcast customers that were used to Weatherscan. Still rockin the Vonage VOIP too. Additional STB fees recently raised from 5 to 7 bucks. So I updated my approximate monthly cost.

Still going strong. No issues, no outages. Rock solid service! Figured I'd post a brief update with a speed test result. Ping times are looking good too.

AT&T bumped up the download speed of the Max10 tier to 12megs. Still the lowly 1.5 upload. Would like to see the upload double to 3megs, but the 1.5 has been a workhorse when needed. On the TV side, still on the U200 package. Nothing on the TV side to worry about. Still a solid service. Finally I uploaded the latest speed test result. Enjoy.

Just got the update to the TH-DVR, now can manage and record shows to the DVR from any STB in the house. The interface has been improved. Weather On Demand, and the Ubar loads and displays faster than before. The 12meg internet has been solid, seeing 11.5 down on speed tests. Posted the latest speedtest.net results. See attachment.

Nearly a year later, still like the service. Just recently got the Mediashare feature which in nice. Been experiencing momentary TV freezes. A little fed-up with the techs on the phone and the in home techs thinking it's something wrong inside the house. Now got the RG running on RJ-11 which I'm not 100% convinced that it's better than running it on RG6. Need to get a tech to call out a line tech to go through the outside line thoroughly. I'm looking forward to getting that fixed. Also recently upgraded to the U300 TV package for 1 extra dollar month for 6 months.

The TV freezing issue continued for more than a month since the last update. A little rant about it in a thread in the Uverse forum here seemed to have got something done. The thousands of corrected blocks in the gateway stats and the tv freezing has stopped for the past 20+ hours. The service still has been good otherwise. Nothing has changed. Ping tests look good too. See attachment.

1 edit | Re: How do the connections work? The TV boxes can be hooked up with either RG6 which leaves all 4 open ethernet ports on the gateway open for any wired ethernet devices.
Or you can use Cat5 for up to 4 boxes to the 4 ethernet ports on the back of the gateway.
The regular STB's and the DVR are the same as far as how they can be hooked up, RG6 or Cat5.
I currently have 3 computers and a Linksys PAP2 VOIP phone adapter wired to my RG and all 3 of my TV's are using RG6 comcast installed over 2 years ago when we had their service. | |

1 edit | Re: no contract? When I signed up(in Sept 08'), there was no special cheaper monthly promotion for TV or internet. And with the U200 TV package or higher the DVR is included, so you only pay a fee for each additional receiver you have besides the DVR.

| Re: no contract? That pretty much how they been. The Stanton, MI server on speedtest.net can suck during the day. My best speeds on it where late nights. The Kalamazoo, MI server or Chicago, IL I've found to be much better.
But 137ms pings is not good. You may want to post in the Uverse forums here and see if the guys in there can diagnose the issue. | |

| Uverse User Report Although the small satellite tuner in the bedroom works really well with the remote - you don't even need to point it at the box - the main dvr box is sometimes hit and miss with the remote. We've swapped remotes, and it is definitely either the dvr sensor or something else. Does anyone else have that problem or am I the only lucky one?
Been a Uverser user for nearly 2 months. No freezing or other problems as reported here. After having been a Tivo user for nearly 10 years, I miss Tivo's smarter interface, but couldn't wait until 2010 for them to hook up with Directv(if they ever do). I LOVE that you can access the dvr from other tvs in the house - something Tivo and the others cannot do. The HD and audio is flawless. I have no idea how many hours it records, and have about 60+ shows now (mostly HD). Also LOVE that we can record 4 shows at once. Never thought I'd use this feature but have taken advantage of that feature. Also love the strong wireless signal that we're using for laptops and iPhones. Also LOVE that I can view pics that I've loaded on my ATT Yahoo account with ???. Wish Uverse were cheaper though. | |

| Cancelling att We already have cable/tv/HD with Cox. Wanted to try att, but decided to cancel for the following reasons: 1. The physical layer (the cable) was not installed in my apartment, when att salesperson said it was already there. 2. The iphone app (which salesman lead client to believe) that allows remote control movie recording never materialized. 3. The overall price for services was more expensive than the current carrier. 4. Client disatisfaction due to above items got att Fired. | |

Recently, our household dropped Comcast and switched over to AT&T U-verse. With Comcast, we were trending around $139 per month, with a triple play bundle for Digital Preferred w/ HBO and another $60 dollars or so in equipment. Now our household had a total of 4 TVs, (One HD) and 4 Computers along with 2 phone lines. So grand total a month with tax was approximately $215 or so. The problem was, our Triple Play was set to expire near the end of October, which would have dramatically increased our monthly costs to close to $300 per month.
So the decision was made to switch over to AT&T U-Verse, We selected the U450 package with the 12MB internet and the Unlimited phone service. When we ordered the package we where informed that it would take approximately 2 weeks for install because of porting from Comcast etc.
On the day of the install the U-Verse tech arrived exactly at 9am (Install was set for 8am-10am.
He was a very nice gentleman, wore booties on his shoes and promptly started his work after I gave him a tour of the house. In our home we used to have a security alarm system that caused some confusion by the Tech as to whether or not we were going to continue the alarm or not, in addition to that, the phone lines where in the tech's words "extremely messed up" most likely due to the install of the Alarm. Our coax was not in the best condition either as Comcast, had split the coax 12 ways from sunday when we added the CDV service.
Further issues in install arose when the U-Verse tech went to our attic to wire the 3 bedrooms that will have the boxes. The tech and god bless him went up and down from the attic to the basement(where the RG was placed) at least 40 times. Anyway after nearly 4 hours of rewiring the upstairs attic, now came time for the RG to be placed in the basement.
This was a very unnerving experience for the tech as he attempted several times to sync up the RG with the network. After about 3 hours of attempting to sync up the RG and talking to tier 2 support 3 times and going back out to the VRAD, the Tech gave the wiring another once over to see if that was the problem. Sure enough there was a wire crossed in the attic.
By now it was going on close to 5pm and the tech had to call another U-Verse tech out for help. The second tech arrived and went to work installing the boxes in the rooms and setting up the TVs etc.
Finally after about 9 hours of install the services where up and running!
I really dont fault the tech for the install problem, it was a simple mistake and it was found and fixed, In fact I personally called the supervisor for the tech to commend him on an excellent job.
The service has worked exceptionally well, the HD quality is in my opinion as good as with Comcast, the channel line-up suit our family very very well and the internet speed and phone services have been top notch. Not to say that Comcast HSI/CDV werent good either, they where however since moving back to Plainfield (There was a Comcast review of mine for Chicago Ridge) There have been a multitude of problems with the Video service.
The AT&T experience has been a very good one. We enjoy the features and channels that are offered to us with the notable exception of not having the MLB Network. When I had it with Comcast, id literally watch that channel at least 6 hours a day during the baseball season. But, hopefully AT&T will add this soon!
Nevertheless we are very glad we made the switch to U-Verse and I have recommended U-Verse to a few of my friends that also have Comcast and they too are switching there services over as well.

Have had UVerse internet for over a year, with very little downtime. The Gateway is user friendly and allows for many custom settings. The Gateway is also set to default for many users with information listed on the device. this makes for Out of the Box configuration very simple. The install tech was nice and knowledgeable, though he could not answer my more technical questions. The Tech Support can be challenging for the more advanced users, however once the issues are escalated, the customer service really kicks in. I have had very few issues with the service all together.
Just recently added TV to my bundle. The channels provided on the lower tiers are adequate, the channels provided on the higher tiers more than most.
The service as a whole is better than expected, considering previous ATT service (cellphone), regardless of company ownership.

Current product: Max 18 internet (18Mbps), U450 TV (includes all premium channels and HD)

I installed on May 22 , 2009 and the install went as planned.. Install went smooth except for a little snafu in activating the internet ( was due to moving from old AT&T DSL to Uverse DSL). I was able to call and get upgraded to 2HD 2SD service so I can record up to 2 HD channels at once. I got the $200 rebate and it worked as stated. They sent me a letter and I logged on to the uverse.att.com and it showed up.. I filled it out and got it quite fast.
So far the service has worked flawlessly. Some pixellation now and then and some slow response in channel changing . Also the remote has issues some times due to my having plasma and the interference from it which causes the remote to do things differently like when hitting last channel it changes to a totally different channel.
But other than that Internet works great at 6 meg service.. VOIP is clear and I love the ability to get voicemail on the internet.
Great overall.

Ordered 18 Mb option, getting $10 off for first 6 months.
Install was quick and painless. I mentioned to the installer that I planned on adding a 1000Mb switch for all the wired lines, and he said that the gateway was a 1000Mb switch. This is not true it is 100Mb, not a big deal but you would think if anyone knew the equipment specs it would be the installers.
I'm in a new development area so the connection is FTTH, this makes for great pings. Just wish they offered some symmetrical packages.
Overall I'm very happy, just moved to Austin from Salt Lake City. And I am getting 18Mb down 1.5Mb up for about the same price I was paying Qwest for 1.5Mb down 1.0Mb up.

Currently enjoying TV and Broadband through U-Verse. The television lineup is great. Tons of channels in the 200 package. Add in the HD package, and you are pretty set.
We also added a specialty channel for an additional $25/mo. Everything, including 3.0mb/s broadband is running about $105/mo. Throw in the ooma savings (which I hope last), and we are saving over the old POTS line, cable TV, and DSL we had before.
The DVR is well made, works easily, and can stream to 4 rooms or record 4 shows at the same time. It is reliable and works 99.99% of the time.
I would say the HD compression is noticeable, and lots of motion will cause artifacts. I was a bit bummed at first, but have grown accustom to the condition. It is slightly worse than my old TWC HD. OTA HD is a lot better - than both.
The system has been reliable. Down times have been minutes, and I can only recall once where it was more than a few moments. Updates occur automatically, but can leave a box hanging, requiring a re-boot. A bit annoying to wait 3-4 minutes for the unit to get up and running, but this is rare.
We are very happy with all our U-Verse service.
