"Service is not reliable"
| Pre Sales Information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Value for money: (ratings below consensus)

I switched to AT&T U-verse after a great sales pitch that promised everything that I could want in a multiservice (TV, Internet and Phone) provider. After I signed up to a 2 year commitment the service I was getting changed and I had to keep pushing to get it back to what I was promised. The biggest selling feature was the high speed internet that was supposed to be a consistent high speed because I was not sharing the service with anyone else - coming in on fiber optics line. I like the TV service ((U300) and have had very little problems with the connection and consistent service. I have been cut off on phone calls twice but other than that my service has been good. The PROBLEM has been in the internet connectivity. I purchased the turbo max (24Mbps download) but am lucky to get 7mbps. It has been two months and I have had nine service techs and many hours of troubleshooting by phone. I have to miss work and the service will improve for a little while and then go back to intermittent. The tech side of AT&T is so compartmentalized that no one can follow the problem through. Any suggestions?

$42 per month "Excellent reliability, superb non-traditional support" "Huge modem, traditional support channels awful" "The perfect backup circuit for me"
| Pre Sales Information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Value for money: (ratings above consensus)
|
My AT&T U-Verse connection came about after I was tired of TWC:BC not offering anything more than 15mbit for less than $insane. I left for a residential cable connection, but was uncomfortable giving up the priority support and still had a few use cases that required a static IP. Accordingly, I decided that any move would require a backup circuit. Therefore, I ordered AT&T with a static IP block and set up my router/firewall to fail over to the connection automatically when the cable connection was down.
The VDSL2 modem, the 2-wire 3600HGV, is hilariously large. It's bigger than any two modems I've ever used. I suspect this is to reduce thermal stress, but come on guys. It's not an issue in my case as I just placed it next to the other mountain of network equipment, but still.
I normally will subscribe to the fastest available tier, but for a backup circuit, I settled on 18/1.5. Unsure if I could get that speed and not willing to pay for an unnecessary professional installation, I ordered 12/1 and then had the profile upgraded based on my excellent line stats--all the way to 35/5 for the profile itself.
The line has been rock solid. However, I eventually decided to move. I have been burned by AT&T in the past during a move where they lost my statics (I literally moved across the street) and were unable to get them back, which frustrated me so much that I just canceled service. This time, I reached out to the social media team - and wow, those guys are just superb. They were professional, courteous, competent, and made the U-Verse service move about the least stressful part of my relocation. And my line is even more solid now as I'm half-again closer to the VRAD.
I would seriously consider using AT&T as my primary provider if they offered much faster connection rates (and shed their ridiculously low 2007-era sized caps). However, the VDSL2 technology, even with pair bonding, is never going to be competitive with D3/D3.1 or with fiber (this area is slated to get Google Fiber in the near future). I wish AT&T would have implemented a more forward-looking strategy and deployed fiber from the start. I also would consider them for a TV provider if they weren't so bandwidth constrained that they have to severely limit the # of simultaneous HD streams and compress the crap out of them. It's too bad, too--the service itself is more reliable and available than either my primary cable internet or satellite-based TV services.

I got it to try and see if Charter service could be way better than AT&T and so far, not much better. I haven't had much in the way of service issues, although getting an order done right can be a tricky issue.

Ordered U-verse (Internet and U200 TV package) on 4/15/2013 and was given an install date of 5/16/2013.
5/16/2013:
Install: Window was between 11a-1p. Tech arrived at 11.30a, well within the window. Had the Residential Gateway (2Wire 3800 HGV-B), 1 wired and 2 wireless receivers installed. Install took just over 4 hours, as they had to make a cable run from our neighbors yard to our telephone box. Installer did not leave until everything was in working order.
Once work was done, installer said it would take 3-4 business days for someone to come bury our cable. It was a pleasant surprise when a contractor (I assume) came out and buried the cable that was run to our telephone box.
TV: Got the U200 package . HD channels are clear on all our HDTVs. No major problems to speak of yet.
Internet: Although we are currently on the 6M service, which is a lot slower than comcast, speeds have been consistent and hardly any down time to speak of.
So far have been happy with the service. Hopefully, it will continue without any major problems.
6/16/2013:
Service has been rock solid up till now. No major problems to speak of.

| | Uverse is horrible and WAY too expensive for what you get Over the past three years, I have had the displeasure of watching AT&T universe degrade internet service, television service, customer service and overall support. Over the last six months, I consistently have problems with the reliability of the service, the technical quality and overall the extremely poor performance. The Internet drops out consistently, it is slow even though I pay for the high tier speeds, the television gets digital breakup, freezes and often the wonderful blue screen. I have to "reset" the gateway and boxes constantly. And the problem never gets fixed. While their technicians are certainly nice they come out to the house and tell you everything is peachy keen. Within two days. All the problems are back and the Internet once again doesn't work. It is systemic of the ATT system. It is poorly designed, poorly maintained and I think on the lowest tier for performance. And I guess what is the ultimate reason I will dump these guys as soon as I find a replacement in my area, is that they continue to increase their bill while absolutely providing a horrible service. My suggestion to anyone reading this review would be to go to any other provider, and not to purchase any services from AT&T universe. | |
| | | | Re: Uverse is horrible and WAY too expensive for what you get Wow! My husband and I thought we were the only ones. We're currently going through the exact same issues with at&t uverse. It's TERRIBLE! We've had 5 different technicians show up at our house within the past 3 months. Each time would sound like a promise or a guaranteed that it will be rectified. BS!! I definitely wouldn't recommend this to anyone! Contract or no contract, I'd rather put my money towards good quality service rather than throwing my money away just to keep looking at a sad blue screen and puzzled images. With that being said, we've decided to cancel our contract. You said it right Jon D! Uverse is HORRIBLE and WAAAAAY too expensive for what you get! | |
| | | | I'm a gamer, and my family and I have had AT&T for several, several years. But in the past year, AT&T forced us to "upgrade" to UVerse. Some nights the connection for our wifi is fine, but most night- Nope. Constant, random d/c's, latency, a whole broad spectrum of annoying issues. My computer is literally a few feet from the modem, and I never have more than three bars. Right now, I'm using my phone's (T-Mobile) wifi because it's far more reliable than UVerse. I'm severely displeased, like just about everyone else who had posted concerning AT&T. Take Mr.Jon's warning, and avoid AT&T Uverse | |
| | | | I totally agree. My internet service is slow and drops too often. Uverse is not even available in my area. I think it is time we ALL demand better service and better prices from ATT, Comcast and all of the others that are overcharging us because we continue to pay........... | |
|
| | Uverse sucks I thought I was the only one there that get's the blue screen / freeze up screen. Especially during your favorite program. When it 1st installed the tech put in that damm wireless receiver, in which I did not order & he said 'well you got it now"...sure enough we tolerated months of blue screens. Another tech came out (49.00 later) & took the wireless receiver & said the modem was interferring with it & causing the blue screen. Well, would't you know it, 2 day's later blue screen again. Called att&t again & they offered to send a tech this time at no charge & I said that ain't gonna do it. Now after reading all the reviews, others have cancelled uverse due numerous blue screens. Will have to go to another provider & cost me more $$$ | |

U300 + 18 meg service. 2 TVs, 5 Pcs
I have 1 TV (wired) that has a periodic freeze, but the one connected wireless is rock solid, go figure. The Installer was awsome , polite and actually knew his stuff , the cable Co's should take notes (I have confidence they won't). Had Insight (Now Time-Warner), I already don't miss that "20" meg internet connection, that was really just 8 on a good day.
I ordered from AT&T's website. You just need to pay very close attention to what you are getting, and what the cost would be after the promo. But all in all it was easy, and if you watch the "fine print" you know what is coming. I choose the install date , they could have been there sooner.
The Wired reciever is a Cisco, the wireless is a Motorola.
All in all I get more channels and more speed for less $. I'll update on the tv issue and see if their tech support gets a gold star.

I signed up for it after exhausting my time with Charter to get lower payments. Funny how now Charter seems better, with no long contracts anymore?
The installer came out to hook up the TV's, and I discover that the coaxial wiring that Uverse uses only works with the cable boxes. Downer, but OK.
Then the installer does not know how to make one of the TV's work, with the Uverse box, without the TV being on "GAME" with the yellow, red and white wires dangling off the front of the TV. He seemed quite lazy to me for this to be his actual "day job".
Funny how after he left, my husband came home and wondered why all these dangling wires, like WTH? My hubby is no good with cable wiring, so I decided to play with this TV set up. It took about 5 minutes to read the directions and use the code for "Sylvania" TV to have the remote and TV working together, without being on "GAME".
Then I recently had the unfortunate error of paying thru the automated service, and mixing up the wireless account with the Uverse account and calling ATT to ask them to credit the correct account. Interesting how I put in my wireless number, but the Uverse account was paid, which is supposed to be tied to my home phone? And ATT could not handle the change from one account to the other, even after assuring me 3 times that it would take 24 hours, which led to 120 hours, so I told them I would just pay the other bill, and to cancel the transfer, but of course that was too hard so one bill had a 500 credit and the other bill was delinquent.
Then some rude manager got involved that was really mean and condescending. Anyway, once my time is up (I hate contracts), I will go back to Charter since you don't have to have all the boxes for basic cable. And the simple fact that the internet is much faster. I will have to buy my own router for WI-FI with Charter. But the Uverse internet is very slow. Almost shocking really?

$202 per month about 5 days "Good reliable service" "No DNS configuration options in the supplied router (RG 3800HGV)" "Good value"

I was previously using AT&T dsl, barely getting the PRO package (3 mb/s). With U-verse, I am easily getting 6 mb/s and could go up to 18 mb/s if I should need that. We are perhaps 1500 to 2000 feet from the VRAD, well within the range for reliable service.
We went to U-verse because of the TV. The alternative is comcast, and we don't much like that company. We were using over-the-air TV, but that became more iffy after the switch to HDTV.
Update April 2010, after 6 months service:
The service continues to be reliable. The price just went up, because the six month new-subscriber discount has expired.
TV is reliable and high quality. Telephone (u-verse voice) has been reliable, and higher quality than we had with POTS. And the elite 6mb/s) internet continues to work well. That the nominally dynamic IP never changes (thus de facto static) is an extra bonus.
I continue to use my own router in DMZplus mode, behind the RG, so that I can have DNS settings available. I briefly tested using the DNS support through the RG, but that did not work out very well (see »So much for 6.1.9.24-enh.tm )
Update Oct 2010, after 12 months of service.
The service continues to work well, as reported above. The main change over the last 6 months, was to remove my own router from DMZplus mode. I am still using my own router, but as an ordinary client. I made this change, because I found that the router was occasionally losing its WAN IP address (apparently the dhcp renewal was failing). Service has been reliable with the router as an ordinary client. I am forwarding ports 22 and 25 to my router in RG settings, then forwarding them to my desktop computer in my router settings.
I am still using the same defacto static IP that I was assigned over a year ago.
Update April 2011. The only change since my last update was to increase the Internet speed to the 12 MB/s download speed. Service continues to be reliable, and I still have the same IP address.
Update Oct. 2011. It is now more than 2 years since installation. Service continues to he highly reliable. In the April 2010 update, I mentioned that the new subscriber discount had ended. I forgot to adjust the monthly price at that time. I have now corrected that (see top of review).
Update May 2012. The service continues to be highly reliable. There was a recent firmware update that might be cause for concern. It removed the ability to use 10.*.*.* as a private IP on the LAN. I'm not using that, so it isn't an immediate problem. But it hints that they might start assigning 10.*.*.* as WAN ip addresses soon. If this is a hint that they are about to provide IPv6, and use 10.*.*.* as an IPv4 fallback during the transition, then that is good news. If, on the other hand, they intend sticking with IPv4, and will use 10.*.*.* to conserve IP addresses, then that is bad news. I guess I will have to wait and see.
Update Dec 2012. There has been no change since the last update.
Update June 2013. The price has increased (shown in listing). The gateway modem/router (2Wire 3800HGV-B) was performing poorly last week, so I rebooted it. That is almost 15 months since the last reboot. There has not been any other change or problem of note. We still do not have IPv6, though the firmware update for that is said to be coming real soon now.

| | AT&T Be extremely careful signing up for AT&T U Verse Internet service by phone. I was assured over and over the $49 activation fee would be waived and there was no other start-up fees. I got my first bill, which I had been assured would be $19.95 plus a prorated amount of about $7, and there was the $49 activation fee plus another $108 in start-up fees. AT&T phone sales people will tell you anything to get you to sign on. They are trained liars. | |

I wanted AT&T U-verse TV to replace my WOW TV service. I am keeping my WOW DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem service.
My VRAD is located 2200ft away. Over one pair, my VDSL measured a solid 25Mbps down and 2Mbps up. AT&T installer put a 2Wire 3801HGV Gateway in my basement. 2 Green LEDs lit 3-4 minutes after first connection. Nice simple, worked the first time.
My installer ran new RG-6 coax from my basement entry point to my two TVs. I assume these coax cables are carrying my HD video streams over HomePNA. The two home runs were joined with a passive splitter and connected into the back of the 2Wire Gateway. In theory, I could have asked the installer for Cat-5 or just WIFI. Coax was his default. I was happy with his choice; my existing WOW coax was untouched.
Two different STBs for my two TVs. One is Cisco IPN4320 (DVR) and the other is IPN330HD (w/o DVR). The U-verse design lets you have one DVR per home. The non-DVR STB seamless shares the same recorded program list. The STBs communicate with each other over my HomePNA subnet. Unlike my WOW service the STBs are really small and have no fan. The back panel of new STBs were very similar to my existing WOW ones. The cabling to my existing TVs was easy.
The first time each of the STB was powered up, they took about 10 minutes to download and then they worked. There was no hassle; it wasn't quick, but it basically worked the first time.
I was surprised to see my 2Wire Gateway have WIFI turned on. In theory I can turn it off (I don't have the password). I fear this additional WIFI hotspot might interfere with my home's existing two hotspots. So far, it's ok.
My very nice and patient installer told me about the most frequent problems and the troubleshooting procedures. He also told me that he could have configured an additional pair to my house and bond them together... but my signal strength was plenty good. Someday, AT&T will be offering higher speeds and maybe more HD streams; that will likely be delivered using pair bonding and my neighborhood and home wiring is well suited.
Background on my home services: I have had Ameritech DSL for 10 years. My original request was to replace my DSL with U-verse VDSL. The U-verse installer couldn't do this. I should have asked 1. shut off my DSL, 2. request my line to be "conditioned" for U-verse, then 3 order U-verse. I didn't know that. Instead, I had U-verse installed on my other home phone line. So as I write this, I have 3 broadband services in my house: U-verse TV, Ameritech DSL, and WOW DOCSIS 3.0. Huh, not a stable state, but it's where I am.

| Wow They let you keep DSL and get U-Verse installed at the same residence? That is not common at all...
The password for your 3801 is on the 3801's product label that has the model number, serial number, etc on it. Should be labeled device access or system password. The GUI access is 192.168.1.254 if you wish to disable the WiFi
| | | Surprised by lack of surprises
I got a relatively basic internet and TV package (although internet boost up to 18Mb). I kept all documents because, with other providers, I am used to being told my will be x and it turns out to be 2.5x on the first bill and 1.8x after that ... and I have to spend hours on the phone and months of billing to straighten it out. I have to say that the install went well, it has been running well, and I held my breath as I went in to look at the first bill, and it was exactly what they said it would be. Furthermore, we lost power for about 5 hours last night, and my signal was fine until my UPS died ... so all told, I'm waiting for the other show to drop, but am cautiously optimistic that this was a good move.
