Value for money:

Upon moving into an apartment, I discovered from the management staff that phone and internet can only go through OneSource Communications, as they have an exclusive contract. And, you have to have a local phone number for the gate to the complex. I ordered the best package they had (10Mbps down/768Kbps up DSL) as part of a package deal with phone, internet and cable. The installation was two weeks after I ordered, and they forced me to take an entire day off work because the could not give a time frame outside of "between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM".

The installation was (relatively) smooth, however the installation tech had to call into the office to have them rebuild the DSL at the central office (they only provisioned me for 5Mbps/256Kbps) and get the correct phone number (which was not what sales gave me). When the DSL was finally working, the tech had call back into the office again to get me my static IP addresses, which were not provided to him nor me prior to his phone call at my apartment. The first bill came and all seemed well.

A month after installation, the internet access went out as OneSource blocked my IP addresses for no apparent reason. After four calls (one of which involving me explaining to the CSR how their network works and what happened) they finally escalated the issue to their network team (or person, as I'm pretty sure they're too small to have teams). About two days later, I got a call asking if everything was working...on my cell phone while I was at work. I confirmed when I got home and found the DSL working again with my static IP addresses, and called the lady back.

Then the second bill came....and they charged me for NINE static IP addresses (I only have three), adding an additional $54 to the bill. After countless attempts to get to the billing department, I was finally told that I could take the $54 off the bill since it was credited to my account, which I did. About two weeks later, I received a letter saying that I was $54 short on my bill and that they were disconnecting my service unless I payed before the 10th of that month. Another four calls into the billing department, in which they stated that my account is in good standing and not to worry about it. Thankfully, my internet access was not disabled.

Now I'm in month three of service with OneSource and seriously considering moving when my lease is up...all because of the lack of reliability of the required ISP. I've also started research on the legal standing for an apartment to enter into a monopolistic contract with a provider, eliminating competition of service for the tenants.
