Tried to get Comcast but the site survey said they could not set me up. I have had Alltel cell service for 2 years. Great phone service so after reading the forums, (great info by the way) I decided to give wireless a try. Setup was easy. Speeds are better than dial-up but for some reason the connection is dropping out every so often for my internet and phone. Maybe tower problems, upgrades or something else. If it keeps up I will call and see what is going on but right now it is not bad enough for me to worry about. Speeds range from 700-1300 down and 80-130 upload. RSSI is around -75 to -85 on a UTStarcom UM150 USB card. No amplifiers or antennas hooked up but I don't see anywhere to hook-up a antenna to this card. May change it up later but it is ok for now.

I have had Alltel for both my wireless provider as well as Internet. Currently I only use their wireless phone.
When I had their wireless Internet it was the best around I never experienced problems with the service hardly except a few problem here and there. I eventually chose to get rid of the Internet service from Alltel for Internet through my cable company, Suddenlink.
I still pay for their cell phone service, I have four phones with only two of the four in a 2 year contract due to upgrading the phones, and I have the My Circle Family Choice Plan for $79.99 (1000 minutes).
As a cell phone provider Alltel is a very good service in WV along with AT&T/Cingular. There are certain parts of WV where Alltel can't reach but Cingular can, and there are areas Cingular can't reach that Alltel can. The price is good for what I pay for but I have had a few billing issues with Alltel.
All in all Alltel is a good provider in any direction to go. To me you can't go wrong.

I picked up Alltel's service back in January of 2007. The signal is very strong (tower visible from the window in my computer room).
Until November of 2007, the service was excellent. Pages loaded quickly and games like WoW were playable with pings in the 200-300 ms range. Beginning in November, however, I began experiencing frequent disconnects, the service switching randomly between EVDO and 1xRTT every few seconds, extremely high latency, and bandwidth dropping to dial-up speeds or lower.
Nearly every tech support person I talked to had a different answer as to why. My machine has been wiped off and everything reinstalled, my modem replaced, and numerous trouble tickets have been opened. At this point, they'll admit there's a problem, and they're working on it, but after two months of working, they've made no progress.
If there were any other internet service available here, I'd drop them like a hot potato.

25 dollars is not bad for unlimited data. No air time minutes used.

I have used dial-up, Direcway (DW4000), and Wildblue (Pro and Value Pak) over the past 11 years. Alltel EVDO is the first solution which provides me with usable VPN access to my work place. Even though upload/download speeds average 100/500 kbps compared to Wildblue's average speeds of 180/1500, browsing is twice as fast as Wildblue. I also see little degradation when loading secure sites verses Wildblue.
My current configuration consists of the Kyocera KR1 router with RK1011 firmware and the PC5750 card. I initially had disconnect problems with the router until I turned wireless off. Disconnects now average 2-3 per week. Please note as of this review I have only had the service for two weeks so time will tell.
As long as you can get EVDO coverage in your area, I would recommend Alltel as an excellent alternative to DSL or Cable.

| EVDO Curretly, satellite is the ONLY broadband access I have to the Internet (60 miles southwest of Nashville in the boondocks). There is very limited connectivity with cell phones, but Verizon says it has plans for a tower within range soon. I am envious of the people that can choose between EVDO, satellite, DSL, cable, WiFi, etc, etc. But thanks for the recommendation on EVDO. If it becomes available here, it will save me big bucks over satellite. | |

| I'm in Rural MI near Grand Rapids. I get averages of 512+ but have hit 3Mb+ a couple times. And the rated speed on their network is 2.4M, I believe. I can't say enough about Alltel's Coverage and speeds. It's worth every dime as I can't get anything else by Sat and that maxes at 52k up. Closest thing I can get is a WiMax but that's 3.5 or 4.25 miles away and it's VERY hilly around here. So EVDO is just plain Awesome. I used to use my cell as a modem (DUN) but the Franklin is Kick-n it.
One thing: how do you network behind it. It's looking like Alltel is blocking inbound pings.

In regards to your network question . . . I'm currently using the Kyocera KR1 router (WITH 802.11 WIRELESS DISABLED). I have an old D-link which I'm using for 802.11 wireless within my house. Hard to explain in writing how it's all connected. I have 11 servers & workstations in an active directory domain which is not a typical home setup.
Alltel doesn't appear to be using a NAT as we get public IP addresses. I suppose that doesn't mean they can't/don't block inbound pings. I've never tried pinging my IP address. The IP address changes after every disconnect which in my case is around 3 per week.
I believe HDMan from this forum uses a linksys router combined with the 5750 card (with 802.11 enabled). Maybe check with him also for advice.
As a side note: I just returned from North Grand Rapids and used my laptop while traveling. Had EVDO from the Mackinac Bridge to Grand Rapids. My daughter spent most of the time trying to explain to her friends how she could be on the internet while traveling down I75! Works great while in motion. Lost the signal ... maybe three times.
Thanks for the reply. -- Alltel Wireless EVDO; KR1 Router & PC5750 card. Former Direcway and Wildblue customer

"Price and always there"

I first tried Verizon service with a 5250 air card in my laptop. I had the service for a month in Tennessee and a month in Florida. 1xRTT was the only signal I ever got and it included a lot of no connections and cutoffs.
I talked with Alltel a couple of times about the service but the local rep's didn't know a lot about it, since it was kind of new. Then near the end of 2006 I talked with them again and they were very knowledgeable. They told be I could connect to EVDO service with an air card or a EVDO capable phone hooked to my computer. I was surprised about the phone option for $25 and signed up right away before the option changed. I choose the Razr phone and a data kit that they had in the store. I hurried home to connect it to my computer.
At home I put in the CD that was provided in the kit and it added the drivers for the phone and the Access software as well as an icon. Then I plugged up the phone with the USB cable[ that was included with the kit] and was connected. That is all there was to it. It was a very user friendly guide to add the service to the computer.
I have had Alltel unlimited broadband wireless service for over a year and it has been good service. I use it on my Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP Sp2 Home with a USB attached Motorola Razr V3m phone. The setup has worked very good.
I use the connection in Florida on EVDO and Tennessee on 1xRTT while roaming on Verizon. I will have to say that Alltel's service is much better than that I get while roaming on Verizon. There is a lot of the time that they don't respond and then sometimes the connection just quits working. That is very rare for Alltel.
The only problem that I've had with Alltel service is the latency and ping times.
But it is something that I can live with.

Manhattan,Riley,KS

"Painless install, decent speed"
"High latency, occasional disconnects, requires voice plan"
"A good alternative to satellite and LOS wireless for rural use"
| Pre Sales Information: Install process: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)

Living a few miles outside of Manhattan, broadband options are very limited. Cable and DSL were out of the question. Satellite and ground-based line-of-sight wireless were viable, but had headaches of their own. Satellite and LOS wireless both would've required the installation of a dish and were pretty expensive considering what you get.
Luckily, though, Alltel recently deployed their EVDO REV-0 wireless broadband in Manhattan (and other cities throughout Kansas) and offers an unlimited data plan for $25/mo. After doing some research on the net and talking to someone at the Alltel office, we decided to go for it. Installation was extremely painless. We already had an Alltel voice plan, but my phone was old and did not support EVDO, so we picked up a new one. The cable and software to plug your phone into the PC was $60. We had them activate the phone and wireless in their office, and when I got home was able to connect to the internet. No dishes to install, no splitters, no wiring (except the USB cable from my phone to the computer). Alltel also offers a plan for $60 a month that allows you to access wireless internet through a PCMCIA card that plugs into your laptop. The advantage would be higher mobility and the ability to free up your phone while on the net (the $25/mo plan allows calls to be received while in data mode, but if the call is taken you will be disconnected).
Speed is fantastic, at least compared to the dialup we had been using. It is advertised as 400-700kbps down average, burst up to 2.4mbps. Speeds vary throughout the day, but most of the time it will do at least 500kbps down and 50kbps up. Lowest I've seen is 400kbps and highest is around 1000kbps. Definitely not comparable to a high speed cable or DSL line, but considering our options we are very pleased. The only downside is that ping times are very high, typically 300-500ms. This is not a problem for browsing the net, streaming, downloading, etc., but for certain tasks, such as VoIP and online gaming, this will be a severe hindrance. Future EVDO revisions are supposed to increase bandwidth and reduce latency, but I believe it will be many years before these protocols are deployed, and it will probably require a new phone and cable.
I should also mention that I have had occasional disconnects in the week or so I have been using the service. They are very sporadic, happening only once every other day or so. It is not a large inconvenience, just takes about 15 seconds reconnect, so I have not bothered looking into it. Because the wireless broadband network is so new (I think it was literally rolled out only a few weeks ago) they may still be working the kinks out.
Overall, we are very happy with this service. I would strongly recommend it to anybody in rural areas around Manhattan, Salina, Emporia, Independence, Hutchinson, Great Bend, Hays, Dodge City, and Liberal looking for affordable and practical high speed internet.
EDIT: I did not realize this at the time, but after more research I have discovered that phone data cables are plentiful on eBay for $5-10 and you don't need the Alltel Axcess MobileLink software to access the net (Windows dialup networking can handle this). So save yourself a bit of cash and don't spend $50-60+ on the data cable and software from Alltel.
UPDATE (03/15/07): I am pleased to confirm that this service truly is unlimited. I have been downloading about 20GB a month since December and Alltel hasn't bugged me about it. Compare this to some EVDO providers which tout unlimited use but cancel users' service with no warning after they exceed only 5GB/month (*cough* Verizon *cough*). Kudos to Alltel on this.
Reliability of the service has been great, in the last few months there have only been a few occasions that I could not connect, and generally the downtime was only for a few minutes to an hour. However, one thing I've noticed is that when I'm downloading from a lot of sources and/or my download rate gets very high (over 130KBps or so), I get disconnected. Not sure why this happens, maybe Alltel limits bandwidth from their side? At least it is only a minor inconvenience, it takes only five seconds to reconnect and one can avoid the disconnects by limiting download with software.
UPDATE (11/26/07): I mentioned the connection problems I had when downloading large amounts of data at the same time, and I believe I have found a solution. It appears that it wasn't an issue with Alltel, but rather my RAZR phone's driver. I had tried a few sets of drivers, the ones that came with the data kit purchased from Alltel were dated 2005, and I remember at some point trying a Motorola driver from 2006, but it didn't fix the problem. However, recently I discovered that Motorola has new USB handset drivers out, version 3.2.0, which are only a few months old. Updated the driver to this version and I haven't had any issues since. Before doing something as simple as downloading a file while waiting for a YouTube video to load would kill my connection, but now I can download multiple files, have multiple videos loading, surf the web, etc. all at the same time and no connection problems. So if any of you are using a RAZR and have similar problems, try updating to this driver and see if that doesn't fix it. Unfortunately I didn't bookmark the page I found them at, I've tried to find the link again but no luck, they were buried pretty deep in the Motorola site. If you can't find a link to the driver download feel free to message me, I have the installer on my computer so I can email it to you, host it, or whatever, we can try to work something out.
I should also point out that since I've signed up speeds have increased, I'd assume as the months have gone by Alltel has done some tweaking to their towers, or maybe they've added another T1 to cope with increased demand. Whatever the reason, I can pretty consistently do 1000Kbps down and 100Kbps up on this connection. I still do get dropped connections occasionally (probably a few a week), I think this is just something that happens with wireless, and not necessarily a problem on Alltel's end. It's definitely not a big inconvenience, it's quick enough to redial.

Bought this card (UTStarcom PC5750) on 11/18 $59.99 mo. unlimited use, card is no cost with mail in rebate that I will probably forget to mail,if I don't loose the paper work somewhere in the house.
Initially this card almost went back for a refund on friday 11/23, however what ever they did to clear up the connection problems seem to have worked.
Still slower than the Sprint card on connect, the Sprint card is lightning fast connecting, anywhere, the fastest we have used. By the time you get your finger off the mouse pad you have a connection, no kidding! (Novatel Ovation U727) There the comparison ends, the Sprint card never showed speeds much over 40kb/s down, but it was fairly consistant everywhere.
My Alltel sales associate called me tuesday 11/20 to tell me there were still problems with the network and to please be patient, so I'm glad I did.
Incidently my wife and I both started out with two AT&T cards for our laptops, but we found that those were nearly useless at the house and surrounding area, not much faster than dial up. (not a 3G area) although the cards worked well in the Clearwater, Fl. area, where we work, speeds there were in the 400-600kb/s down realm (3G area) also I was able to get one of the AT&T cards working in SUSE Linux with KPPP.
We have been Alltel mobile phone customers for over 6 years (back in the GTE Days) remember GTE.....eh?
We will be keeping the Sprint USB card it's micro size and quick connect are desireable to my wife.
In the meantime we will see how the Alltel card continues to work, if it's anything like what we have experienced over the years with our mobile phone service, I don't forsee problems.
Incidently all the carriers we have tried were $60.00 a month unlimited plans.

| Follow Up on Alltel On late Friday 11/23 the Alltel Card/Modem quit working and refused to connect. I tried throughout the day Saturday to connect with litle success.
On Sunday 11/24 I returned to the Alltel store where it was purchased, after waiting in line for approximately 30 min in a very busy store, I was put on a phone with tech support for about 10 min, a woman walked me through a trouble shooting tree, to no avail, card would still not connect. I was then told to wait on hold while another tech would help me. After standing at the counter for 20 min on hold, I hung up. I waited another 5 or so min for a rep, and asked for a refund.
It was necessary for the rep to get an authorization for a cash refund, so that took another 10 min.
So off to Verizon, after spending over an hour at Alltel with dissapointing results.
After spending another hour at Verizon, I was able to:
Port both of our old cell phone #'s over to Verizon Get a Wireless card that connected and worked Get 2 free phones (After rebates) Check and receive confirmation as soon as the FIOS is up and running in our sub-division (already buried)
The Verizon card (USB 720) works as well as the Alltel card when it would work, but it connects faster and every time!
More to follow on pricing as soon as I get all the rebates figured out and mailed off......

After waiting, waiting, and waiting, I realized that my rural area probably wouldn't be covered by DSL, Cable, and of course FIOS. I researched satellite access, and was about to drop the coin and go with WB.
At this time I was with Verizon, and my cellular phone service was severely lacking. I decided to look into Alltel options and was surprised to learn that they were offering wireless internet access in my area. I knew I'd have to put a lot into the initial investment to switch to Alltel, but in the end, if the products worked as advertised, it would be worth it.
So, day 1... I go to Alltel and inquire about porting everything from Verizon to Alltel. While she was porting the numbers, I asked about the EVDO service. She explained that it wasn't available now, but would be by the end of October. Having the money now, i decided to go with the port, and also getting the internet service as well. I needed something that could be used on my PC at home, as well as on the road in a laptop. The only thing offered was the Franklin CDU-550 USB EVDO modem.
I got home with all my expensive gear lol, and was really excited. I hooked everything up, and without a hitch, was surfing the web at 1xRTT speeds. A month goes by, and while at work, I noticed an EV symbol on my Samsung Hue. Goodness ! I went to Alltel and she confirmed that the towers around the area have gone live with EVDO Rev. 0 service. I have 7 hours until I get off work, and that's a looong time when you're excited.
So, work is over, and I get home, and notice the DO symbol on my Quick Link Mobile control panel. I was so excited, I could barely click on the "Connect" button lol. So, I connect... it took about 2 seconds to authorize, and I was up, up, and away ! I started testing speeds immediately. At this time, using Windows Vista, I was getting around 500-700kbps download, and 100-120kbps upload. I was really happy at first. Then I started reading forums, and seeing that others were getting much higher speeds than I was. I booted up an XP partition and tweaked a few settings, and from there on I've been getting 900-1100kbps download, and 150-180kbps upload.
I am extremely happy with the service. I live about 3.5 miles from the nearest tower in Olar, SC. I am surround by trees on both sides, and behind my residence. I get a 100% signal, with an RSSI of -66 to -68. The service is $60 per month, plus the taxes. I think it comes out to be right at $70 per month with a two year contract.

When I first received my data card I was thrilled...after a year with wild blue the EVDO connection seemed super fast. After three days of great connection, the card now will only connect to the 1xRTT network, and looses its connection altogether routinely. There is a tower very near my house, and my signal strength is always 100$ or -78dbm to -90dbm.
When EVDO was working it was great...unfortunately there is no clear way to force the card to connect to the EVDO network as there is with my Sprint data card from the office. I keep thinking that the EVDO network will come back on again, but after 3 days on 1xRTT I am losing hope.
The computer is still located in the exact same place as when I had the EVDO Connection (VERY STRONG SIGNAL) before, but now the connection sucks...
Oh well, living in the country is not always great, and frankly no connection at all is better than WildBlue. I guess I will have to rely on internet access at the office only!
Update #1:
Last night I called Customer Care 3 times...the first two times I was connected immediately, then transfered to advanced customer care where I was subsequently disconnected. The third time I was told that they were having problems with their phone system and to try back in the morning. All three calls resulted in the same action...they tried to update my PRL...none of the pushed updates have hit my card yet...
I called back this morning as instructed and got to advanced customer care very quickly. They seemed knowledgeable; however, they were unable to help me...so naturally they decided to push the PRL update again...Naturally, I still haven't received the update!
The did give me a direct number back to the lady that was helping me with instructions to call back in two hours if I was still having problems, or the PRL update hasn't taken effect yet...
So I wait...I upgraded the Tech support score to 5 out of 5 simply because all of there techs are so much more polite, and knowledgeable than those I have dealt with at Sprint and WildBlue. Even with the problems, it is still a pleasant experience so far... Just giving me a direct line to call back on is head and shoulders above the competition in my experience...
Update #2:
OK, so I called back after two hours because the PRL still wasn't updated...I talked to the Advanced Tech lady, and she was very polite. She took my number and said she was going to trouble shoot a few more things and call me back...64 minutes later...new PRL, and EVDO service again. She has not called back yet, but everything is working again, and I am very please with the level of service I received.
Update #3:
I was contacted by the techy that was supposed to call me back...apparently the problem was related to the prolfile that was set up for my account. The PRL update that I needed was being sent by their system as a text message as opposed to through the data connection as it should. Problem fixed...all is well...
Update #4
OK, so this morning (Sunday) exactly one week from when I started having problems, they are back...at 0730 MST I had a solid EVDO Connection (-62 dBm) by 0731, the connection had died and came back to life as a 1xRTT connection at around -120dBm. I called tech support and was ran around in circles being told that the problem had to be on my end...When I mentioned that my Daughters TracFone was connected to the Same SID, and experiencing the same weak signal, the lady actually told me that both my phone, and data card must both be failing...I asked to speak to Data Tech Support, or Advanced Tech Support and was hung up on because "the problem was on my end."
Natually I called back and demanded to speak to ATS, and was connected to a very friendly British guy...After explaining how my week has gone, he confirmed my theory that the problem must be tower related. I still have a poor signal, and I am still pretty ticked off, but they did open a ticket to investigate the issue, and allegedly will call me back. If this issue isn't resolved by Thursday I will be returning the card...If they can manage to fix the problem and give me a solid connection from more than a day or two, then I will likely purchase phones for the entire family...only time will tell!
by the way, I did learn how to force the card to go to the tower with the strongest signal as opposed to the tower that is "Preferred." In my area Alltel is the only CDMA provider, and supports verizon and Sprint, so this is a little better method than going straight to the preferred tower...

| Re: PRL's Yeah, I did a little searching last night and figured out how to do the PRL update manually, I will keep that in mind for next time.
I did verify that I am on an Alltel tower (Sprint and Verizon both roam on Alltel here), and that the tower is fairly close to my house (1 mile north). There is nothing in terms of terrain in my region...Super-flat, no buildings over two stories for well over 30 Miles in any direction.
My signal when everything is going well is in the -60 to -70 dBm range.
If I put the card in field test mode, it is interesting to watch the 1xRTT and EVDO signals fluctuate. For a few minutes the EVDO signal will be stronger, and then the 1xRTT signal will be stronger...
