"Great audio quality. Competitve pricing against Verizon in our area."
"Might be hard to reach Comcast outside normal business hours."
"If you are looking to save money without sacrificing call quality Comcast Digital Voice may be the answer"

    I ordered my Comcast Digital voice service and scheduled the installation on a Saturday. The installation technician installed an Arris EMTA, which also acts as my cable-modem. The installation was quick because I did not want him to wire my house. We have an expandable cordless phone system.

    The audio quality is very good. Local calls and domestic long-distance calls sound just as if we were using a regular land-line to place the call. We only hear a slight delay when calling Puerto Rico. We do not hear that delay when using our regular Verizon land-line to call Puerto Rico.

    We are able to log into a website and listen to voicemail messages. We do not use that feature very much. We use the phone to check for voicemail messages and follow the voicemail prompts. It works almost like any other other voicemail system.

    The system has been pretty reliable. I have had it for about 11 months now and only experienced one outage. It went out on a Saturday night and was restored early Monday morning. I had no internet access during that time, either. I do not subscribe to cable TV. When I tried to call Comcast late Saturday night I was on hold for an hour and never got through. However, when I called 5AM early Sunday morning, I got right through. The customer service rep said he was going to send a tech to my house to check the wiring. However, the service was restored early Monday morning and I cancelled the service appointment. Maybe, there was a problem with their network or maintenance. That was the only time I had an issue with them. Other than that, it has been pretty reliable.

    The Arris EMTA has a Litium battery in it that they claim can give 8 hours of calling time. I have never tested this. I do have my EMTA plugged into my own UPS. However, I do not know if Comcast's equipment on the pole has a UPS or how long it would last. We also have cellphones in case of emergency. The EMTA can also handle up to two phone lines and is DOCSIS 2.0 capable. It has a USB port that will work with Windows PC's. I use it's 10/100 Ethernet port.

    If you change your router or computer that connects to the cablemodem, you have to reset the modem in order for the connection to become active again. Because of the battery-backup, power-cycling the modem will not work unless to also pop the battery out, too. Just push the reset button in the back and your new router, computer or network card will connect just fine.

    Uploading or downloading do not effect voice quality at all. When I had Verizon Voicewing or Quantum Voice, internet traffic affected voice quality. This does not seem to be the case with Comcast Digital Voice. I do not see any difference in internet speeds when on a call, either. With the other VoIP carriers I have tried, throughput would slow down a lot when on a call.

    We are happy with our Comcast DV service and would recommend it to anyone looking to save money.

    @comcast.net

    8 hrs is standby

    the mentiond 8 hrs is standby time, the quoted talk time(as per comcast ) is 4 hours although newer emta devices usually have dual battery slots to extend these figures

    Just had Comcast Digital Voice installed yesterday. I moved over from the Comcast Digital Phone service. The transfer of my 2 lines was almost instantaneous! Never had a single issue with CDP, but the features on CDV were hard to pass up. Seeing that CDV does not use the internet, but rather their own private network, I was hopeful for a better experience than I have with Vonage. My Vonage line often has times where the call seems to be dead and the other end cannot hear me, yet I can hear them fine.

    Unfortunately, I'm finding the same is happening with my CDV line. The call voice quality is great, but there are times when the caller on the other end of the line is unable to hear my voice (but I can hear them). This usually happens for seconds at a time then resolves itself. I've also found that it might take 3-5 seconds to get a dial-tone on one of my lines. I'm going to see if this clears up in the next few days and if not, I'll have a tech come out and check things out.

    I'm wondering if the Arris modem they installed might be faulty? Stay tuned and I'll update on progress.
