I have been an earthlink cable subscriber for more than 10 years and have been very happy with my service averaging 3 to 5mbps at a price of $42. Hawaiian Telcom advertised speed up to 11mbps for $35. The actual speed was a little better than Earthlink and the latency was less. I am currently running both services side by side, but have not decided which one to keep.

Good service. Sometimes it feels just a little faster than dial up.
But for the most part it is good for music, however video is too 'jumpy' and difficult to watch.

Re-editing my review of H-Tel- I live in Lahaina, close to the "CO". I get at least 2644 down & 723 up. No breaks in service. Very solid. When 7/11 comes to 661,
Lahaina, I'm about 1000 ft. from CO.
Hawaiian Tel has been working from day 1 to make it work. I pay $47/ mo. for DSL + local telephone. Long Distance is SKYPE or Messenger or C-phone

I recommend Hawaiian Tel over cable.

I had Hawaiian Telcom come out to my apt as they needed to switch the terminations out on the keyboard. After that, the 3mbps no-contract $29.95 per mo service has been working great! Speed tests consistently at 2.5 mbps and higher, usually 2.7 mbps.

The pre-sales was not a point to comment on as I'm in IT and I sought out information on HT's DSL after 3 years of spotty, often slow Road Runner cable on Oahu. The modem shipped to me in 3 days, as promised. The DSL was provisioned on the scheduled date, the only problem was that HT had to switch terminations on their keyboard in box outside. The tech got here 1st thing in the morning, totally knew what he was doing, got it done and since then I'm flying along and loving HT DSL.

Highly recommend it for speed and price.

Added Note After Reading My Reveiw: Someone here at DSLR.com needs to update this forums pricing for Hawaiian Telcom. It says $48 per mo, but HT has significantly lowered their rates -- $19.95 for 1.5mbps, no contract; $34.00 per mo for 3mbps per mo, no contract: $34.00 per mo for 7mbps for 12 mo contract, after which the the 7mbps rate goes up to $46.00 per mo

And no, I do not work for nor have any vested interest in Hawaiian Telcom. My name is Jim and as I mentioned, I work in IT. I've partnered with an old friend in building »www.stateexampass.com , which is a site where we host online exam prep courses for electricians who are taking their state's test to obtain their state electrician's license. We launched with Hawaii, next will be NJ, and then all other states. As I've been working long hours building this site with my friend, I've been banging my head against the wall since we started in January as Road Runner problems (connectivity, speed) are ENDLESS. I'm really happy with HT and wanted to share that.

Stop by and check us out, try our demo exam. Mahalo.

I'm on the stand alone DSL for business, 3m tier, my speeds average 2.7 down and 700k up. Technically faster than I was supposed to be able to achieve in my area. The install was new from the pole, and the installing technician was very efficient and knowledgeable. I did my own inside wiring from the demarc, the install is for my home office. I work for a technology consulting firm and was replacing my completely unreliable connection from Oceanic. Any of my clients asking about internet access I tell my Oceanic support horror stories to and rave about how well handled my order and install was with Hawaiian Tel –

Very reliable 3M tier (I get 2.6M down, 574KB up).
Recently tried to upgrade to 7M but the distance was too far.
They wouldn't offer me their 11M because of the distance.

Moved back to RR but with Premium service 8000/500. Very good, noticeably faster.

Update: That was for the first week only. Since then (about a month now) the speeds have been around 4800/478 kbps whereas the first week they were 6100/478. Latency has also increased from avg of 113ms to 1500ms.

RR sent (Charlie) a tech to the house and he could not access RR's speed test web page. He said that the slow speed tests had something to do with our subdivision area Pahoa (Hawaiian Beaches, Big Island) . It's been over a week since Charlie's visit and no improvement or word from RR.

    Update: 10/10/08

I sent a top tier tech the log of 9 months of poor speeds. He refunded my Turbo premiums and said they won't start up again until they get Turbo up to acceptable speed. Nice outcome.

Big shout out to my friend Aaron whose support has been most valuable.

I have the old Westell also; should we have gotten a new modem when HawTel took over? Also, is 11/7 or whatever even possible... and how? Will we be able to get it down in Puna (HPP)?

It will be quantum leap over the current ATM/Frame relay
network using ADSL + 2 and MPLS technology. Which will make
    11Mbps and 7Mbps very possible, with a 1.5Mbps upload.

I have had Hawaiian Telcom (formerly Verizon Hawaii) DSL service for over 2 years now. My 3Mbps/768K connection is rock solid.Yes, I did have problems when I first got DSL and when Carlyle took over Verizon Hawaii. But overall it has been a stress free experience.I consistently get the speeds I pay for.

Update 9/01/07: Hawaiian Telcom has started to offer higher DSL speeds of 7/11Mbps/1Mbps. The only caveat is it is not widely available yet.Even when it does get more widely available, you need to be 8K and 6K from central office to get either 7Mbps or 11Mbps service.

39.99 for 7Mbps service (with landline)
49.99 for 11Mbps service (with landline)

55.99 for 11Mbps service (without landline)
45.99 for 7Mbps service (without landline)

69.99 for MyChoice bundle (with 7Mbps service)
79.99 for MyChoice bundle (with 11Mbps service)

Update 8/24/08: I got upgraded from 7Mbps ATM DSL to 11Mbps MPLS DSL service. It is like night and day. The previous DSL tier I had provided very spotty download speeds. With my new 11Mbps service, the speeds are much more consistent.

"good value but aging infrastructure"

I've had service on this line from the Telco since 2000. For a while it was GTE, then it was Verizon, now it's Hawaiian Telcom. During my time with Verizon, I made the transition from Frame Relay to ATM... however, the speeds I'm getting now (3mpbs/768kbps) were more than possible with the FR equipment.

Anyway, I also manage a number of other DSL connections around Maui... all either Upcountry, Lahaina, Wailuku, or Kihei. I don't really pay attention to Pre Sales info but nothing negative stands out.

The installation in Lahaina (business) was done on Hawaiian Telcom's watch and it pretty much went without a hitch. The modem arrived quickly and the service was live even more quickly (I plugged in a temp modem earlier).

Connectivity has been rock solid for a long time. Routing was weird at first when Hawaiian Tel first took over. It's a lot better now but there's no escaping the 100+ms ping penalty for being located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

My experience with Hawaiian Tel Tech Support was very positive. Something went wrong at the CO that required a reset (not exactly sure). The front line person was smart and informed... it didn't take much on my part to demonstrate the problem was not on my premises. I didn't have to teach the guy basic networking tools, even. He opened a ticket, put me on hold while he reach a network guy, told me they'd identified the problem and "could they get back to me at home?" It was fixed a half hour later. I got a call from the network guy about 45 minutes later to verify things were working. With GTE and Verizon, this would have taken multiple calls over several frustrating days.

The services are great. I define service as connectivity only, though. I don't use ISP email, I don't use the portal, I don't care about "value-added" anything.

Awesome value for money. No slow downs (at least for me, connected to my Kihei CO). No caps (yet). There is no 3rd party DSL provider that comes close... especially since you still have to pay Hawaiian Tel for the line no matter what.

update 2008-08-17: I dinged HT 2 points for "services" and 1 point for "value" since it's been over a year since 7mbps and 11mbps services were announced and my CO has yet to be upgraded. In fact, very few areas have these speed packages and more than one insider has let on that it's unlikely that more will be upgraded. If this persists, I can see myself shopping around for service elsewhere... my options are limited though: Road Runner or Clearwire, basically.

    hawaiian telcom

hawaiian telcom is awful i dropped road runner for hawaiian telcoms 7mbps but im not getting what i paid for im recieving only 3 to 5 mbps this internet sucks i have tried it out for 4 months and now im back with road runner. i get less problems. and my xbox 360 works fine now. using hawaiin telcom i kept getting errors while downloading and uploading and sometimes it just wouldnt work. watching movies was also horrible. it always stop in the middle to upload and it takes like 45 min. really bad. there customer service is also just like there internet connection slow bad and always getting cut off. if i were you dont take the bate either. because i was duked into a 2 month free internet service that turned out not to be free. they also said i wouldnt be paying modem charges witch i did. these guys ar awful. also just for the gamers out there i play xbox 360 24 hours a day 7 days a week and let me tell you that you will never get a good connection, while playing call of duty 4 live i only get 2 bars at the most and always getting dropped because the connection is to slow, same with halo 3, gears of war, and others but these are my main games i play daily. so for gamer to gamer stick with road runner i always get full bars and a great connection
