I used Sun Rocket for about 2 months then switched to Insight Phone Service. Sunrocket just like any other voip its good but not as good as a POTS.

UPDATED - 06/09/2007 - I used Insight Phone Service for a few months and decided it wasnt worth it really to pay more, so I switched back to Sunrocket and everything has been pretty good.

UPDATED - 08/10/2007 - My line with sunrocket is still working though they stated everything was going to fail 5 days ago. I dont plan on getting another voip for my house phone just going to go cell only. Ill update and let you know the final date they pull my plug.

UPDATED 0 08/12/2007 - They pulled the plug. Im not switching to Teleblend. I only used it for faxing anyway ill figure something else out. It was fun while it lasted. RIP Sunrocket.

I thought that service was pretty good. In the end the service was getting better with sound quality. Sometimes it was iffy.

So Sunrocket's dead now, but it really was a decent service for how much we paid for it - it's a shame it all ended the way it did with a complete disregard for its customers. They keep twisting the knife by selling our marketing info to other providers (ie. Vonage).

    Shame.

    I agree...

I actually started to like my SR service after they switched over to Level3. Before that I lost some hair, but hey it was ...hmm...exciting? I was lamenting the demise the other day, I think I'll miss the SR website the most, very straight forward and easy to use.

UPDATE: Obviously, Sunrocket went out of business. It was a VERY good service for my needs while they were in operation, but that was completely offset by the unprofessional manner in which they ceased operations.

    ========================================================

I started on SunRocket in Septermber 2005, just before the notorious September outages (which says something positive if people still refer to that outage, rather than one more recently). It didn't impact me at the time as I was in transition from POTS and still had my old line, so all I did was go online and forward calls to my old number until the outage was over.

Since that time reliability has been good. I've had a reason to reboot the Gizmo due to SunRocket maybe 3 times since that period, and only once did the reboot make a difference.

I was on a low bandwidth cable service for awhile (256k dl, 64k ul) but have since increased it to 3mb ul and have experienced no sound quality issues. Things were occasionally choppy when I only had 64k uploads, which really isn't the fault of SunRocket.

It did take longer to port my number over than I thought that it should have, partly because of my previous company, but a couple of weeks could be attributed to SunRocket not doing anything even after I had cleared up the issue with the POTS provider that had my number.

I've never had a problem with getting online to forward my calls to my cell phone in the event of an outage (generally a cable outage, not an SR outage, but the net result is the same), but it would be great if SR outages automatically routed the calls to a forwarded number or at least to voicemail.

I recognize that VOIP is still a toddler, and overall am quite pleased. It's the only service that has flawlessly handled my ReplayTV modem dialout (ReplayTV is like TiVo) nightly. I tried SEVERAL others with no success.

I'm convinced that SunRocket is the best value in the marketplace. I've not had much reason to deal with customer support or service so I can't address those concerns that some folks have.

My wife is pretty intolerant of poor service on the phones. Packet8, when we tried them, had a LONG lag between when the number was dialed and when the ring tone began. SunRocket is about the same as POTS. In fact, I disconnected our POTS for about a month, hooking up SunRocket in its place, and my wife didn't know the difference until we had a couple of those choppy calls (that I mentioned above were resolved by increasing my bandwidth).

I very much like that I can access all account features, including listening to voicemail, from a remote location (such as my office at work). It's nice to be able to turn on call forwarding when I need it. I only wish that there was also a telephone interface that I could call from my cell phone and activate call forwarding that way. When my cable internet servcie is out and I need to forward the number, if I'm at home I can't count on being able to login as I don't maintain a dialup account and only rarely does someone in the neighborhood have an unsecured wireless connection that I can tap into.

All in all, color me very satisfied. With just a couple of enhancements SunRocket could blow away the competition, in my opinion.

    My Other Reviews·AT&T CallVantage
I signed up for SR service in December and got my gizmo a few days later. It has been well over the 10 days and I still cannot receive incoming calls. I have talked to tech support several times and so far they have been unable to fix the problem. Also I was hung up on several times buy tech support while being on hold. This last time the person from tech support said they would flash my Gizmo to the latest version to see if that will fix the problem since they were able to call from a normal phone to mine and it did go through. I will update this review as I get more information. As of right now I'm split 50/50, keeping vs dropping SR.

    1/26/06 Update:

Well as of today I still can't get incoming calls. I have tried calling my SR number from cell phones, our current land line, my parents land line, and my work phone. All I get is a busy signal. I'm in touch with a person in Level 2 support and he said he's working on it.

    1/27/06 Update:

WooHoo! SR got my incoming service working. What really got the ball rolling was emailing the builditbetter@sunrocket.com address. From that email to incoming calls was around 10 days.

My next order of business is to really play with my service, give out the numbers to friends/family and finally cancel my expense land line.

The 30 days till live is due to the incoming calling issue. I was able to place outgoing call's with in a few minutes of hooking up the Gizmo.

    2/27/06 Update:

So far so good. I am very impressed how well the SR service has been working. I made the leap and I put in the request to get my landline ported to my SR line. I can't wait to ditch my land line where I pay for local only service for $42.00. I have also up'ed the Reliability from 3 to a 4.

    3/30/06 Update:

I made the final leap. I ported our home number from our land line carrier, Alltel, to Sun Rocket. I submitted the request on Feb, 20th '06 and the actual port started on March 23rd. The port was not completed till March 29th so when anyone called our home number they would get the three tone sound like the number was disconnect, but with out the disconnected message. I called our land line company and they confirmed our number was ported to Focal Communications. In my earlier entries I said that it took almost a month to get our incoming service working. The fault was not Sun Rocket, but was Focal. Apparently Focal is VERY VERY slow about getting numbers provisioned and apparently the same at getting ported numbers activated.

Over all the service has been great! No outages that I know of since we signed up. Occasionally the caller will sound a little digital, but I have yet to have any complains from the people on the other end that they could not hear me or that I sounded weird. Only a couple of times have I tried to place an out going call and it not connect on the first try. I'm upping the Value for money to a 5 for this. If I encounter any major problems I will post an update here.

Are you considering changing to Sun Rocket. Even with the problems I have had I would say go for it, but be aware that this technology isn't ready for Business yet. I can't imagine a business telling there customers, oh sorry our phone service is having problems because our internet is out.

    1/9/07: Update:

Just a little over one year and going strong. I have become to love my Sunrocket service. I have had only a few problems since my last update and most of the problems have been digital sounding voices and I believe, one outage that lasted less than a day. I just renewed my service for another year and what's even better I was able to catch one of the buy a year get a year free deals. They applied the promo to my account even though I was an existing customer. Talk about a company that still cares about there customer. Also I have heard that the majority of there tech support has been relocated to the US. You can see the article on there web site (link below). SR also keeps adding new features to my phone system. As of right now I don't see myself changing to another carrier. If I have any major problems with SR I'll update my review.

    My Other Reviews·PHONE POWER
    ·ViaTalk
    UPDATED (AUGUST 2007):

No point in making a review now, the company went under and doesn't exist any longer. It was excellent deal while it lasted.

    -------------------------------------------
    ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I signed up at on at the end of February '05 for the yearly plan (which comes to $16.58/month) and received the gizmo and Uniden phones after 9 days. I must say that, after almost a year, I am extremely satisfied with my choice. I will probably renew the yearly deal with them. During the first month, I kept also my Vonage line, just in case I was not satisfied. This is what I think about SunRocket.

    The good:
    * The quality of the sound is as good as Vonage (which was excellent for me).
    * All the features that I used from Vonage are also in SunRocket, including working caller id with name and 7-digit dialing.
    * Additional free features make this deal very sweet: free Uniden phones, no extra activation fees, working E911, anonymous call rejection and call blocking, music on hold, ability to rename incoming caller-ids, $3.00 worth of free international calls each month.
    * A free extra incoming number (costs more with Vonage)
    * Customer service is very fast to answer calls
    * No extra (bogus) regulatory taxes/fees or cancellation fees

    The bad:
    * Incoming calls took more than 2 weeks to activate. This is not good and gave me initially a bad impression about SunRocket.
    * SunRocket used to have some longer-than-acceptable outages. Vonage was much more reliable for me. Lately, however, the reliability has been excellent for me.

Overall I am very satisfied with SunRocket and I will continue to recommend it to family and friends.
