    My Other Reviews·Comporium
I looked into digital phone service, seeking to downsize our budget.

AT&T Call Vantage looked good to me, because they were having a deal going that shaved off another $5.00 per month, because I have an AT&T cell phone.

The TA arrived within a week. Had a little trouble at first, hooking up, because I had to change the order they were hooked up, to get the best internet speed.

But the voice clarity is great! You could compare it to the best land line phone service!

The only problem I have been having is that it sometimes cuts out. On my end it sounds like "snow." (the sound you hear on your TV after the station has signed off) I don't know why it does that, and it can be annoying at times, but the price and clarity make me happy so Call Vantage stays in this house!

    UPDATE:

Well, six months ago we had a family tragedy, and my phone was in use, non stop. Seemed like every call was getting cut off...having to call people back just got to be just too much to cope with. The call QUALITY was still there, but the RELIABILITY was terrible. I had called the company previously and tried re-setting everything up countless times, but to no avail. And, since I don't have ATT as my cable provider, I didn't want to get into the dance about where the fault laid, I gave up and reluctantly went back to a land line.

    update ratings

Amazing that in this review where you said the call quality was so bad you had to give it up and go back to a landline, yet it falls in the "smooth ride" category. Even with 'reliability' down to 20%. Perhaps you should go back and change the ratings to better reflect your update.

    Re: update ratings

Have to agree. If the service got so bad you had to leave, how could it be "100 percent value for money".

But it is all moot, because they are never going to sign up any more customers.

I was getting sick of Qwest's $20 pound-me-in-the-a$$ fees and taxes, so I gave AT&T a try.. $25 a month, which I couldn't pass up, a few friends had it and said they loved it, and so do I, now! Very clear and easy to understand directions, great technical support, and very friendly sales/customer service. No way am I going back to Qworst for phone service. Came with a DLink TA that plugged right into my router, had to configure the ports for passthrough, but otherwise it was very very simple.

    ************** Update 9/11/08
Well U-Voice just became an option for me and it's $30 for unlimited service with some more calling features then CV. The install just happened today and I will be sending the TA back.

While I had the service I had no complaints at all it was very good. Kind of said to see ATT not accepting new orders. Hopefully they come out with some thing as good or better for those that can't get U-Voice.

    ************** Update 8/6/08

Service has been great but I noticed when I was downloading/FTP'ing a large file (so maxing out the down or up stream) the call quality got very choppy. With U-Verse the 2wire RG doesn't have QoS. So I put my Linksys WRV200 back into the mix and have that controlling all PC equipment instead of the RG. It's much better now with that handling the QoS. Some times if I am maxing out the up/down and then start a call. The router takes about 20-30 seconds to give the TA the QoS it needs.

Other then that it has been rock solid service.

    **************** Original
I got rid of comcast phone/internet/cable once ATT U-verse was an option. Here in IL U-voice isn't an option right now. So I decided to try out Call Vantage. I called in to sign up. I do have ATT for wireless and if you do you can get the unlimited plan for $19.99 instead of $24.99. I had heard on the forums here if you had DSL same discount applied. So I asked about u-verse and they said same discount applies.

Took about 7 business days to port my number. TA was sent overnight and setup I had some issues. Called tech support got it working in a matter of minutes. I could make outbound calls inbound weren't ported at that time. Then I got a email saying the port would happen on 2/27. First thing in the morning all was working on the CV line. Switched everything over to the TA.

So far I can't complain it sounds just like POTS. I haven't had any issues other then either power failure, internet or TA glitch. If that happens you can't dial out on the line unless you login to the web portal to confirm your 911 address. Understandable why that's done but some warning would have been nice ahead of time.

Anyone we call can't tell it's VoIP at all. With my U-verse connection I have the 10/1.5 connection. I worked from home one day and I was on the phone and had someone downloading my my FTP server and I did a speedtest.

    Your Throughput

    Download = 7.225 Mbps
    Upload = 646.51 kbps

That's pretty impressive and I didn't notice a difference in the quality.

Overall I am happy with the service.

I had to put my TA between my router and my modem due to only transmitting audio not receiving it. It is probably my fault for poor router config and I will try to work it out later but for now it works.......

My wife was POed when she found out that we would have to 10 digit dial....
Now that I changed all our cordless phone's phonebooks with the correct 10 digit #s she really does not care.

Plus the ~400/yr we will be saving over the $40/mo unlimited plan for AT&T POTs.....

I've had Callvantage for a while now. It's worked so well, that I dropped my home POTS line (My DSL comes in on my business POTS). I have two Callvantage lines with unlimited long distance.

The biggest drawback has been 10 digit dialing. Even when dialing a local number your have to dial 10 digits. The other quirk is that if your TA losses power, they make you "re-confirm" your 911 information before it will let you make outgoing calls again. Kind of a PITA.

I like that faxing actually works every time. No other VoIP provider that I've used (and I've used a lot of them) could do it.

AFAIC, AT&T CV beats the pants off of Vonage. Century-Tel (Local ILEC) is very expensive, so this is a welcome change.

UPDATE:. I've had Callvantage for about a year now. Still works well. I would say CV is the best VOIP service I have used.

Still working well. dropped the 2nd line due to lack of use. Also got a discount for having AT&T wireless. Wanted to note - when I called in to customer service, my call was answered quickly by an English speaking rep. All issues were handled in one call. I'm not used to this with AT&T. Hopefully this is a trend.

IIRC, you don't have to dial a '1' for long distance, much like cell phones. In any case, here in the DC area, we have to dial ten digits on a land line, because of overlapping area codes. But if you have a phone with enough memory, much like a cell phone, you can let the phone do the ten digit dialing for you.

Agreed that verifying that you have not moved your TA is a pain, especially when it happens so often as a result of sub-second glitch in the power line. An easy fix is an inexpensive UPS for the TA.

I got CV for work. It is what we are using for work-at-home telecom.

Installation: I wasn't able to put the D-Link VoIP Gateway (TA) between my DSL modem (6M/512K) and my router as suggested. Instead, I put it behind my router (Monowall on old system) in a DMZ, ran the QoS Traffic Shaping Wizard and all is well.

Quality: I can be on a call and use NetMeeting and other screen sharing apps with no problem for either voice or screen refresh.

911: You have to sit through a long 911 message before you can press "1" to verify that you are at your correct address. That's a pain, but I have the TA on a UPS, so it is a very occasional thing. You can still receive calls, just can't make any until you set it. Even then, it then places your call after confirmation.

Messaging: I like having my voicemail forwarded to my inbox; worked great this summer when I was on vacation. You can also log into the website and check messages. It shows you who called and gives an easy way to delete all. Especially handy with all of the telemarketers despite my number being not listed.

    Overall a good service.

    My Other Reviews·Comcast
What can I say? This service is probably the best thing that's happened to me and my checkbook in the past 3 years. UNLIMITED local AND long distance calling for only $29.99 per month! Who could turn that down? Sure, you still have to pay the $45 per month for a broadband Internet connection, but it's better than paying almost $50 for local service from SBC alone. The features offered on the service and the website are truly outstanding. The service includes caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, voicemail (just like on a cellphone), and a number of other great features. From the www.callvantage.att.com website, you can access your call history of both incoming and outgoing calls, record an outgoing message for your voicemail, create an online phone book, set up call filtering, and SO much more. The features of the entire service are almost endless, and even though you may think you'll never need or use a particular feature, it's still nice to know it's there for the taking.

Installation was a breeze. I received the D-Link Telephone Adapter (TA) 2 days after I ordered the service, but had to wait an additional 3 days or so for my current telephone number to be transferred from SBC to AT&T CallVantage. As soon as the transfer took place, I hooked up the TA in front of my router, went outside and disconnected my SBC line, plugged my TA into a phone jack, went through an automatic setup/firmware update online, and before I knew it, every phone in my house was connected to the AT&T CallVantage Service. It doesn't get much easier than that. The documentation that is provided for the setup process is very easy to follow.

So far, I've had no problems with the service itself. However, there has been one instance where my cable service was down, therefore leaving me without phone service. Overall, the quality of calls is superb. Occasionally I do hear a slight echo when I talk, but it seems to go away within the first few seconds of the call. [UPDATE 1/1/07: I no longer hear echoes during my calls.] One thing I don't like is when I am on the phone, my web browsing literally comes to a halt -- I feel like I'm back on dial-up. It is bearable, but gets to be quite annoying. As soon as the call is over, things resume to normal. If you are always on the phone and surfing the web at the same time, you may not like the slow-down. [UPDATE 1/1/07: A few months after I initially posted this review, this issue seemed to fix itself. I can browse the web and be on the phone at the same time with absolutely no issues.]

I'm also somewhat concerned about 911 dialing. AT&T claims that 911 service is compatible with CallVantage, however, they say that there may be some problems tracking your address if you're unable to give it to the 911 operator. I also don't like the fact that I can no longer dial 411 for directory assistance. I'll have to start using my cell phone or use the good ol' phone book or AT&T's "AnyWho" online directory. [UPDATE 1/1/07: E-911 service was introduced to my area several months ago, and as long as I keep my TA at my home address, I should have no issues with 911 service.]

I haven't had to deal with the tech support yet (I've only had to call them to change my billing method which can also be done online). From what I've heard their customer service is fairly decent, but they have their downfalls.

[UPDATE 1/1/07] My neighbors recently switched from their land line to Vonage VoIP service, which is about $5/month cheaper than AT&T. However, they claim that the customer service is terrible and they have a constant echo during their phone calls. I don't think $5 more per month will kill me.

[UPDATE 8/14/08] Service has been going strong for a couple years now. I had to replace my old D-Link TA with a new, updated model a few months ago. Ever since, I have had very slight radio station noise in a few of my calls. Not sure what's causing it, but it only happens once in a while and it's hardly noticeable. Still very satisfied with service.

BOTTOM LINE: If you are looking to switch to VoIP, GET AT&T CALLVANTAGE!!!

CallVantage price drop to $24.95 for unlimited

I have had CallVantage for almost 2 years now, and am also very satisfied. CallVantage dropped their "Unlimited" service to $29.95 a couple of months ago at least. Apparently, though, if you already have had service with them at a higher rate, they would not automatically reduce it. One phone call to their service center and they did this for me. I was told, at the time, the reason was that they could "NEITHER" raise "NOR" drop the basic service rate on their own - a customer had to request it. I am, surely, very skeptical of that claim.

Thanks for the heads-up guys; AT&T is definitely advertising their price as $24.99/month, but I am still being charged $29.99. I'll be giving them a nice phone call tonight.

I honestly feel stupid for not catching this earlier. I could have saved over $30 last year! Oh well, at least I was finally made aware of it (via this site). Otherwise, AT&T would have continued to overcharge me for the same service. When I called the support line, the lady said, "Yes, you are currently paying $29.99/month. However, you have the option of choosing the same service for $24.99/month. Would you like to move to the $24.99 plan?"

No, I WOULDN'T! I'd like to continue to be screwed every month! I wonder how many other people aren't aware of the price change and are still being overcharged...

Be careful services start in AT&T eyes is the date you requested it. So the fifteen day refundable grace period will be over by the time you can use their service.

I requested service on the 7th of July and did not receive service until the 22nd of July. I then found that the features their sales person said would work with my system would in fact not work forcing me to find a provider that could. Sales said that I could use the click2dial in MS Outlook contacts. You have to use their web based contact book. Another annoyance is you will need to dial the full ten digits even for local numbers. The big kicker is their service will not work with my security system. Vontage does just fine. I do know the problems with VOIP and security I have an APC and other backups.

I signed up with Vontage and on the 4th of August the AT&T line was disconnected. AT&T acknowledges these dates but claims service starts when a customer signs up and requests service not the actual date service provided date.

Why would I disconnect my current service and use a service that can only be use to make calls. I do not think that not being able to receive calls is considered a telephone service. So my claim is my service started on the day that I was able make and receive calls and that was the 22nd of July.

So the 60.00 I paid with my credit card for their start up was good for 12 days of service.

    Dear George

I did not have service on 7-07-08. I signed up for service on that date with
the understanding that my phone would be transferred over on the 22nd.
Further my TA device was not sent out until the 12th of July and I received
it on the 14th and called in to make the connection. I could still not
receive calls until the line was ported about the 22nd.If you check your
records this should be the date.

Now as for you quoting me the law I understand. If that is the way AT&T
wants to handle this I will be cancelling my DSL line and phone line at
901-274-XXXX. I was really interest in having a dependable AT&T VOIP service
and since it could not meet my requirements which included Click2cal,
security system compatibility and the requirement of dialing the full ten
digits. Which BTW were never mentioned to me by your sales team or on your
website. I had to go to Vonage.

Again if this the way you want to treat me then Goodbye to the other service
    I currently have.

I will be waiting to hear back from you. If not then I will use my options.

    Sincerely,

    AT&T: Is it a surprise?

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences.

Unfortunately, is it really a surprise?

This is a big, big company. That's a problem because:

    a) It's not that the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Rather, the right hand does not even KNOW that there IS a left hand.

    b) Company is still adjusting after a boatload of mergers.

    c) Sorry to break this news, but this huge company does not need to worry about pleasing each individual consumer. They work the averages. If 3/4 of the people are 3/4 happy, that's good by them.

What I am saying is, why not go to a company that WANTS and APPRECIATES your business---like CallCentric or many others.

You would not buy a wedding dress at Sears. Why would you want to get VoIP from AT&T?

    Good luck.

That is one of the dumbest analogies I have heard.

CV is actually pretty good compared to most. If you look that reviews on here it is pretty good. I can honestly say they are much better then Vonage. I have had no issues in the 5+ months I have had service.

Do bad circumstances come up yes. Should they take care of the customer, yes. Do things fall through the crack, yes.

No one company is going to be perfect customer service.

Fall through the crack? Give me a break.

AT&T has a good product agreed. Their customer service is so bad If I could I would give it a -10. Tell me about your great experience with getting to talk to a human. Tell me about how understanding they are or willing to let you talk to a supervisor. Tell me how they are so much better than Vonage. The problem is all services will have problems but the key is how they take care the problem. I have had experiences with all kinds of service like most people who use the internet and I must say the norm is getting bombarded with "how are we doing" emails. Did I get one of these from AT&T, no.

So my response to you is wait until you have a problem.

And as far as the dumbest analogies I think yours takes the cake. With your OH Well that just the way it goes attitude I bet people just walk all over you.

Re: AT&T: Is it a surprise?

I have had a few issues with CV and it was related more to my U-Verse service and lack of QoS. I talked to CV a few times less then 5 minute hold times. Tier 1 had me try a few things and report back. I did and then got escalated to Tier2 where we did some extensive testing with my old setup. Tried a new setup and all is working. They were willing to do a conf. call with the U-Verse techs to get it figured out.

Vonage took for ever on hold times when I had them 2 years ago. When I did get through I could barely understand who I was talking to. They never passed me up to Tier 2 or a supervisor. Instead I used the old dslreports email which worked better but took 24-48 hours for a response.

Sorry but nope people don't walk all over me. Secondly as I was saying any large corporation has it's problems. The Call Vantage service is smaller then Vonage. The point Larry P was making that the left hand doesn't talk to the right doesn't really work for the CV side of ATT. Again from my experience compared to Vonage and others that are with CV. They do try to help out as much as possible and go beyond in some respects.

Did you have a bad experience absolutely, should it have happened, no. Would things have been made better if the sales person did his/her job, yes. Sales people are sales people some are good and some bad (to me more on the bad side). That goes with any company big or small.

Hey, we're not in a political campaign here.

In any event, I'm not sure that just being better than Vonage is enough.

I have had the pleasure of dealing with outfits that truly appreciate their customers business----such as CallCentric, CallWithUs, and VoicePulse. Customer inquiries to these outfits are generally answered within MINUTES during daytime hours, and even in the evening they often are answered quickly. I have had prompt responses from all three of them even when I was not signed up as a current customer.

Smaller companies like CallCentric can provide such an outstanding level of service. Isn't that better than a giant firm such as AT&T which has so many big business clients and which outsources or offshores so much of its support?

Here's something else I don't get about AT&T CallVantage. Their single line plan is about $ 25 a month. Their 2-line plan is about $ 50 a month. In other words, NO discount. But it actually is even worse, because that second line does NOT come with unlimited minutes.

So on AT&T CallVantage, if you want two lines, you'll do better with two separate accounts! Now THAT's what I call dumb.

Re: AT&T: Is it a surprise?

I agree it's not the best service and neither is Vonage I will give you that for sure. I tried a small company a few years ago before Vonage and got burned. I stayed away from them since then. Could I try another sure but for me so far CV does what I need and I get a discount since I have ATT as my ISP.

I do agree the 2 line plan is dumb pricing and unlimited point.

Honestly I have a no problem reaching CV in the AM or PM. The latest I have called them is 8pm.

Although T is a big company, the CallVantage unit operates somewhat independently, especially since CallVantage is a product of the pre-SBC company. Case in point: If you want to keep your number when switching from AT&T POTS, you still have to do a line port, and you will get POTS 'retention/return' incentive letters.

As for the appreciation of the customer--here's where a big company mentality can be a hindrance. They have specific methods they follow for troubleshooting, and when you have a problem with a feature that's explicitly 'unsupported' (e.g. the reviewer's alarm system compatibility problems), you usually won't get much help. However, if you have a problem with the supported service and it's on their end, you can usually get a reasonably quick repair.

I had thought CV offered a 30-day trial period, not 15 days--I'll have to doublecheck websites for that. If so, the reviewer should get his $$ back. In any case, it's reasonable for the reviewer to insist that the service start date be no earlier than the date he received the ATA.

    My Other Reviews·RoadRunner Cable
My original VoIP provider was Vonage. I switched to ViaTalk due to the many cool features plus great deal. ViaTalk worked great for me, but my other half complained about people not being able to hear him talking when he was on conference calls for work. I saw many reviews stating the excellent sound quality of CallVantage, so decided to try it out. So far it's working great. The other half hasn't had any conference calls since I setup CallVantage, so we'll have to see about that.

The order process was very quick and easy via the CallVantage web site. I have AT&T for my mobile phone, so was eligible for the $5/month discount on CallVantage service. I opted for a new number rather than porting, as I'm still keeping the ViaTalk line for now. I received a confirmation e-mail as soon as the order process was finished, and the next day received a shipping notification that my adapter had been shipped. It was shipped FedEx 3-day. I actually received the adapter a day late because AT&T used my P.O. Box as the shipping address. I gave them that address as my billing address and gave my office as the shipping address, but apparently their system screwed that up. A quick call to FedEx fixed the problem.

The adapter they shipped me was the new D-Link DVG-5102S. That was fine with me as all my other networking equipment is D-Link, and I've never had any problems with D-Link products. From opening the box to dialtone was maybe about 5 minutes. Since I'm fairly experienced with VoIP and networking I didn't read the instructions, and had no problems hooking everything up. I did quickly glance at the instructions after getting things hooked up, and they appeared to be fairly good instructions.

The only problem I've had so far was caller ID was 3 hours behind. I connected my laptop to the adapter, signed into the interface, and changed the time zone to Eastern (it was set on Pacific). Since doing that the time has been correct on caller ID. I haven't had to call support yet, so can't really comment on what their support is like.

Update 08/06/2008: It's been a little over a year now, and it's still working great. It's a very solid product, and I've had no problems or outages. I've had to call them a couple times now. One time was to update credit card info, and the other was for a problem I was having. Both times I got someone in the USA who spoke plain English, and I was connected to them almost instantly. This was a very welcome surprise, since most companies have shipped their support off to Bangladesh or where ever these days. The problem I was having turned out to be a problem with my phone cord and not with the service. Both times that I called, the reps were extremely friendly and helpful and actually seemed like they were glad to have me as a customer. The conference call issue that was happening with ViaTalk has never happened with CallVantage (and didn't happen with Vonage), so I'm guessing that was some issue with ViaTalk. I'm glad I made the switch to CallVantage, and plan on staying with them.
