Up until recently heritage has been near perfect. ~15-20ms pings to Seattle, ~40-45ms to CA, great for gaming etc, occasional downtime from time to time but thats to be expected from a WIFI ISP
Few days ago I noticed higher pings so i did a traceroute, it seems they switched their routing. It's now using Integra instead of its old routing (i forget the provider) but its now in the range of 80-100 to Seattle, 120-130 to CA. I also notice it takes 10 hops to get outside of my state :\ traceroute below
I really hope they fix this or else I might be forced to get Qwest.

I've had the misfortune of doing business with Heritagewifi. The company is not interested in maintaining long term customers, nor are they concerned about the quality of service they provide. Service disruptions are frequent and resolution is slow. Customer service management does not have the skills to work with the public and this lack of skills is reflected in the lack of concern when customers express issues with availability and billing. Contacting support is painful at best and escalation of issues is non-existent. DO NOT TRUST THIS BUSINESS WITH YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS AS THEY ARE UNABLE TO MAINTAIN A 24X7 SERVICE. I would not recommend Heritagewifi to any one unless you treasure poor service. I was a customer of Heritagewifi for over 4 years and they accepted loosing a customer over a change in the expiration date on a credit card. Makes you wonder just why are they in business???

"Where did they go?"

Hi:
We are an access point host site for Heritage Internet in the Salt Lake City area. Two weeks ago, service disappeared. Repeated calls to the office are returned with a message "All Circuits are busy, please try your call later". A call to the fax number rings and rings. The T-Span connected to the antenna is dead, too. QWest disconnected service on it the day service died.
I'd appreciate it if anyone could reply to this message and let me know what happened.
Thanks!
Eric

I have been using Heritagewifi for about 8 months now and it went from wonderful to mediocre with time. Initially, it was wonderful since I don't have DSL or cable options where I live. For several months, the connection and speed were fantastic. Lately, not so good. I am ineligible for their upgrades beyond 2.4G due to my line of site. Lately, I have had uptimes of about 70% which drives me nuts--particularly on weekends, when nobody will answer the phone or calls back.
I have had the firmware upgrade which is supposed to deal with interference, but I still have the same problems connecting. In the meantime, I just hope that this upgrade process to a higher frequency doesn't cause them to lose concern for the guys like me that don't have an access point in view, and that they can continue to improve things....perhaps increasing the number of access points with the higher frequency.

This is a new service in my area and so far they rock. I pay 39.95 month for advertised T1 speeds and I acheive around 1300 both ways. Install was flawless. Bad part of the service is they have no newsgroups, no usalble ip and you have to call tech support to set up your email address. Seems their tech support was alittle busy the day I callled. I hung up after 20min. It took 6 calls to get to talk to someone only to find out that the email server or whatever was down and had to call back on saturday. Called saturday and call was answered right away and email was set up. Good things are coming in the future from Heritage. They are adding a DS3 connection in the next few months and are going to bump up speeds to 11Mb. They are going to offer voip at the same time, and according to they installer it's going to be cheap. This is my speed.
Yours «1396 down «1329 up
I give them a A-. I had cable and dsl in the past and they do not compare both would go down from time to time (dns server).
*UPDATE*
Its time to update. I have had the service for some months now. Its been a rollercoster ride for sure. the longest outage I had was 3 days (it was Christmas weekend). Called on next buissness day and issue was resolved. I had several ongoing issues that I just dealt with. I was not getting the bandwidth I was paying for, my pings were jumping from the low 30's to over 300. After a few months of this I called and the next day they came out and fixed the issue. It turns out that my antana needed a firmware update. It seems the old firmware was prone to outside interference ie: any device's using the 2.4Ghz frequency. Since the update things are so much better. But now a new set of problems has shown up. Each tower is served with a T1 and it seems that they are over-subscribing these T1's. It hurts but I view it as growing pains. They are getting close now do switching to the new system which has redundant T3's to the towers. As most users in this area know they are no longer Heritageisp.net but Heritagewifi.com. These change will be complete when they switch to the new system. The following quote is from thier website.
"Heritage Wireless Internet understands that you want the fastest internet connection for the lowest price available. That's why we have been developing an infrastructure that will provide you with speeds up to 3-5 Mbps depending on what service plan you choose."
"Our pricing structure will be based off of your desired throughput speeds. There will be a few different plans to choose from. Once these plans have been determined, we will post them on the website, so keep checking back."
For now I understand they have growing pains and I look at what is coming so it keeps my pain in check.

I spent the better part of a year on this service. I spent hours of down time waiting for calls to be returned by a tech support group that I have yet to actually talk with. Staff I did talk with denied this could ever happen and refused to even look into the matter. In the end I went so far as to talk to a friend that runs a wireless ISP equipment installation service...as in one of the businesses that set up folks like Heritage. The end all of it is that the folks at Heritage don't even know how to use or configure their own equipment properly and often call in other business suppport to fix their in house problems. How can anybody trust that? Combine that with speed no where close to the advertisments, only auto bill pay so you can't refute a bill and get credit for down time, rude staff and bad customer service, no real IP, faulty equipment and run around from the folks that are supposed to help and it's an easy resolution...Cable One or anybody else if you can get them. The original installation was also blown and had to be repeated...twice. What a joke.

I've been a customer for several months now and things are only getting better. I am gettting a consistant 1300Kbps Upload and Download, It was kind of sketchy at first. But they did come out upgrade something in the bridge that seemed to solve the problem. And it also seems that the folks here in Idaho have a new Tech support. When I called the other day to switch my e-mail account to the local mail server, I actually talked to the same Technician that came out to install the bridge and Antenna at my home, he mentioned that all technical issues from now on are going to be handled locally. Thats a big plus for them! I would rather speak to someone local and get sameday or next day service than to someone in another state that doesn't seem to care, Last Note: I cant wait to see if they will actually increase our speeds like they are promising, if they do It'll be sweet!

After recently moving to St. George, I scouted out the broadband situation a little. First Charter (the cable company) said that our address was not on cable - which would make sense because we're on a street with plenty of new construction. A neighbour had SkyView Wireless Cable Internet - which they said was quite reliable and found the technicians helpful and knowledgeable. The only problem with them was that they charged high prices for a small amount of bandwidth throughput. I found Heritage and they looked good - most people said that they were acceptable and they had half decent prices. The installer came the same day I ordered it - just some local guy who made his living off of it. We have a Netgear wireless router - many people have their opinions about Netgear. I for one have never had any problems with this router and have used it for many years so far. The installer said that Netgear would never work with their network - never has and never will and told us he has a $70 Linksys router in his truck for purchase. We quickly declined the offer and configured the router on our own while he was still here. The router worked great - but we decided to put it on an Asanté ethernet router instead of leaving our network vulnerable to hackers. To this date from installation we have had a total of 85.392% uptime (calculated at 5 minute ping intervals from a server in San Francisco, CA) and have to continually phone technical support to inform them that this tower is down before they even begin to fix it. The tech support people have no straight answer and usually give a general "it's Qwest's" fault. When the wireless is up - I generally get very low throughput speeds (in the 512Kbps down, 72Kbps up range) Provided that I go to businesses that use Qwest backbones around here that have 100% network uptime - I highly doubt that the excuse is valid. After we received our first invoice we were charged an extra few dollars for "overusage fees". No piracy networks are utilized - just the nature of my work requires heavy internet usage and working with servers. Connections drop briefly (something being reset on their end) and kill my data transfers and SSH connections in a flash - making it a pain to do any form of work. Overall I am very dissatisfied with this service and will be changing over to Charter now that service is available in our area. I'm used to dealing with the usual oblivious technicians - I just need a fast, reliable connection. I would recommend that those who are "internet-savvy" and heavy internet users not walk away but run quickly from this service.

"Great speed, competent installers"
"No usuable IP, behind NAT firewall with private block IP address"
"Good for most, speed can't be beat."
| Pre Sales Information: Install process: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

TimM brought up most of the points I had.
Speed is great, I really appreciate the uplink speed, as it is usually really limited on cable and DSL.
The installers were a refreshing change from the normal ISP's installers. They did much more than I expected, and I could actually talk about dynamic IPs, NAT firewalls, and DHCP without them giving me a blank stare. They knew what they were doing and were good to deal with.
I understand their reasoning for the NAT firewall (mostly to prevent people running servers), but I do not like their decision. I called tech support to see if there were any plans to change it, and they said in 4-8 weeks timeframe they will begin switching to a new system that will have internet-accessable IP addresses, and they said at that time they will being blocking ports. The tech I spoke with said they currently only have a 4 IP address pool per radio tower, and they will be getting more soon. I imagine they will block smtp, www, and ftp ports, although they didn't specify. This is fine with me, I can understand how this much bandwidth could easily be abused since it is more or less a full T1 speed. Port blocking, in my opinion, is a much better option that a NAT firewall because at least I can use obscure ports for personal use (for instance, sftp'ing to a server to grab a file I need or something).
I don't plan on running any servers, but I would like the ability to ssh or ftp to my servers just to grab the occasional file. This should be fine when they offer internet-accessable dynamic IPs, as I can use dyndns.org hostnames and auto-update.
For the time being, I am forced to create a reverse ssh tunnel, and use port forwarding to connect to my machines from the outside. Obviously this will not work to host games and such, but it is working for my current needs. I need to login to my servers (ssh), transfer files (ftp or sftp), and use remote desktop or VNC. This is at a business location, so it is very handy to be able to correct problems by connecting remotely.
Bottom line is that the NAT firewall won't affect your average user who just browses the web and uses email. It will affect the more advanced users who want to ssh, VNC or rdesktop to their home machines. With a little hackery it is still possible to do some things, but my opinion of Heritage will be much higher when they have at least dynamic IP addresses.
