I have been using Vonage now for a little over a year and think the service is outstanding. I like being in control of my phone service and not having to deal with SBC.
Only real problem I have had is I get an echo on my side of the call, but I have gotten used to it (none on the other side). I did have to get my Cisco ATA changed out to the Motorola a couple of months back. The port 1 went out and we switched to port 2 with no problems. Then one day nothing worked at all and it took about a week for Vonage to finally send me the new Motorola box. I actually like the new one better than the old Cisco since it has a built in router.
I moved to Ohio from Indiana and have a number in both States, beat that SBC and Verizon for next to nothing... Nice to be able to do that and family a friends can call a local number for me in Ohio from Indiana.
I hooked up all of my phones in the house to Vonage and have had zero issues.
Over all it is a great service and I recommend it to everyone, especially people that has family in other States.
Geek
Update 9/9/2005 I have been hearing a lot of what sounds like dialtones coming through the phone. I thought it was just my cordless and I was getting interferance from another cordless someplase else. I went to a corded phone and I was still hearing it and the people I call also say they can hear it as well.
I lowered my rating for customer service because it takes them forever it seams to answer their own phones and email. So I don't know what the fix for the sound is going to be. I have unplugged the MTA and it still is doing it. No huge deal but it is getting worse daily.
Geek
UPDATE 4/22/09 I have since dropped Vonage in favor of VoIP from Insight. No real reason other than it doesn't rely on the internet.

Just signed up a week ago. Although my number port is not complete, I am able to make outgoing calls. Call quality is extremely good. Billing would not let me exchange adapters after I realized the one I ordered (Vtech 8100-2) was not what I needed after all. Had to go buy my own VT1005 and activate that on my account.
Aug '06: After a few months of service, I decided that I just wasn't going to use my phone that much as I primarily use my cell phone. Also, my bill went up to almost 18.00 when they added new fees. I switched to the 100 minute plan for 9.99 (11.9X after fees). I average 30 outgoing minutes at the most a month. Would be nice if I could speak to someone other than an Indian phone rep. Service has been good up to date although I am considering porting my number out to T-Mobile prepaid.
Dec 2007 - So far so good. I basically use my vonage line for junk calls and as my give out number to people I don't want to talk to. It is also hooked up to my DISH DVR.
Sept 2008 - Still working as it should. As I primarily rely on my cell phone to make calls, my vonage line is used only by my DVR. I called CS and had my account switched to the 4.99/month residential hold account plan. Free incoming minutes and 3.9 cents/minute outgoing. As little as I use it, my bill should be about 8.00/month after fees.
June. 2009 - The 4.99 residential hold plan cost me approximately 9.20/ month after fess are added..

Absolutly no problems with my Vonage line. With the new fee increase, my price has gone up 12%, but its still cheaper than a POTS line.
I have had the system since 2004.

I have had vonage for over 2 years now and have found it extremely reliable. I ported number from AT&T CallVantage because I got a better deal and more features that suited me. I have the old Linksys RT31P2 and it works great.
I have used their SoftPhone product for my girlfriend while she was in London and it worked fairly well. Worked best when she was direct connected to the Internet and not just picking up a Wi-Fi signal somewhere in the city.
I think VoIP is great and for those concerned about power outages just buy a decent battery backup to connect to your Cable/DSL Modem, VoIP Box and phone if cordless and you are covered.
I am extremely happy with Vonage and highly recommend it.

Updated 12/2/08 --- Well I canceled Vonage about 3 months ago, I just realized when I moved into Manhattan that I was not using it and was using my cell phone only. Therefore, I decided to save the money and canceled the service.
However, it was reliable for the entire time I had it and I was extremly happy.

I have been waiting for years for the opportunity to tell Sprint to hit the road. They are the only POTS line provider in my area. They definitely have the monopoly and their rates are way too high. I was paying ~ $40.00/month for basic service (no long distance) with Caller ID and an unpublished number. Ouch! But I didn't have a choice....until now.
I saw the ads on TV for a couple weeks and basically ignored them thinking the quality couldn't be comparible to the POTS line. My wife finally convinced me to start doing some research. BBR was the first place I turned, of course! Most of the reviews here spoke favorably of the service so I decided to give it a try.
I had several questions before purchasing the service so I wanted to talk with a representative from Vonage. I waited on hold for roughly 40 minutes before someone picked up. That was NOT a good first impression, but I am glad I stuck with it and gave them a chance. It took 4 days for the adapter to arrive. It's been smooth sailing ever since.
I get excellent customer service via email. They respond promptly every time (so far). Getting someone on the phone is still difficult unfortunately.
1/25/05 UPDATE: Finally got my number ported today. The paper work was submitted on January 13th...12 days from application to full 100% Vonage VOIP service. Not too bad.
8/30/07 UPDATE: Looks like I have had Vonage for over 2 year snow. Their customer service is still the pits; unless you can get through to a tier 2 tech. I occasionally experience poor voice quality, but that is very sporadic and usually does not last long. With the right equipment and the proper settings, you can maintain near land-line quality. For the price I pay, it is still worth every penny.
6/18/07 UPDATE: I dropped Vonage about a year ago. Comcast had a better deal via their Tripple Play package. We'll see how long that lasts. I am sure their prices will increase very soon.

Vonage Broadband of Thieves.
I had Vonage for about 4 years. I contracted for 2 phone lines and 1 fax line. The fax service was always unreliable and tech support could never get it right. Phone voice line sound quality was fair at best as many people I spoke with complained that it sounded like I was speaking through a tunnel. The BIG issue came about 6 months ago when I had I failure with my lines as no calls were coming in or out. Using my cell phone and waiting over 30 minutes for tech support to get to me and then I spent an additional 2 hours on the phone with a level one tech that had me pinging the server and doing this and that, only to transfer me to level 2 guy. Level two quickly stated that I had a bad router and that they would ship me a new one arriving in about 2 days. It did arrive as a refurbished unit and I quickly hooked it up and still could not get on line. Another 2 hours spent on my cell phone with tech support determined that this router was bad (right out of the box). I went to Walmart and purchased a new router for $50 dollars and got my phone lines quickly up and running that same day. One month later I receive a Vonage bill for and additional $120.00. I call them and find out the bill is for the broken router that I did not return (they never told me that I needed to return it). I told them that I would return the router and they needed to refund my money. They simply said NO because it was over their thirty-day time limit and that they would not refund my money. When I told the service agent that I was unhappy with this situation she simply asked if I wanted to be transferred to service disconnect department. What a joke. I wasnt ready to disconnect until I got another service lined up and I think they play on this fact. I finally got the refund as result of dogged persistence and 5 angry calls to Vonage customer service and then only after I sent them the router at my shipping expense. That was the only excuse I needed to change services. I will never go back and I will never recommend Vonage to anyone.

| They are a bunch of thieves I called and cancelled my service the day my contract ended because I never really used the service and when I did the voice clarity was always choppy. They constantly blamed it on my internet connection through comcast, but my cell phone is wifi enabled and works like a champ over it so explain that one!!! Anyways a few days after cancelling they processed another monthly payment. I called because they said that i didn't owe them a dime. Turned out I didn't, and they "mistakenly" charged me for another month. They said they would reverse the change right away. it's been over a week and a half and I have called twice to see what's going on. they now are saying it'll be the 18th before they put back the money they stole out of my account. WARNING TO EVERYONE> THE SERVICE SUCKS AND THE SUPPORT IF IT COULD BE ANY WORSE I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY"D STAY AFLOAT!!!!!!!! WORSE COMPANY EVER AND I WILL BE REPORTING TO THE BBB!!!!!!!!!!!!! | |

This review is overdue but I just recently realized there was a option here to review your service providers.
Signing up was easy. It took a 45 minute call to tech support to get my line working the first day. After that it worked pretty flawlessly.
I had Vonage for over almost two years and referred a friend to them because I was happy with the service. When I no longer had a need for their service I decided to disconnect it. They expect you to do everything to manage your account from the web site. So my first place to look for information on disconnecting was their web site.
There after a lot of searching I found a phone number to call to disconnect. I called that number and it just answered and quickly said "This number is no longer in service please call " and gave another number to call. That number was the normal tech support number. Their automated phone system does not have a option for "I WANT TO DISCONNECT" so I ended up pushing this and that until it finally went to transfer me to a csr. I then waited almost 45 minutes on hold. The person who answered became rude when I said I was calling to disconnect and I had to argue with them just to get it turned off. It was pathetic.
Since then I have received a ton of letters from them asking me to come back. I have called them and asked them to stop sending me mail and mailed them a letter requesting they stop. The letters still come. I got one just last month.
After explaining my experience with my friend I referred he then called to disconnect and his experience was about the same.
The really sad thing is if they had made disconnecting as easy as signing up then later when I wanted a VOIP provider I would have gone back to them. After that. There is no way I would do business with them.
Plus they are always in the news being sued for one thing or another. I keep wondering when they are going to go out of business. Seems like its getting close.

Just an update. I still have Vonage. I have reduced my plan to the 500 minute plan so save a few bucks. I'm still very happy with them.
I hooked up with Vonage a few months ago. The quality of the calls sounded much better than my pots line. I had to turn the volume down on my phones. After a month I had them port my pots # over to vonage. Its been 2 months and Im still waiting. Thay say it will be done Jan 5th. So far there are no real problems. The couple times I have called customer service I was put in que for a half hour or so untill someone answered. Vonage is only as good as your internet provider. Dont try it if your isp sucks. Overall I would recomend Vonage to techies wanting to save a few bucks.
Years later Im still with Vonage. I think they are great!

Had vonage for going on 4 years. Just had to have an adapter replaced due to connectivity issues but other than that great service. Call quality depends on how good the internet connection is. I prepay for the year so it works out to be 26$ a month with tax. Just a great value for a phone.

I signed up for the Vonage VOIP service last November. When I signed up they continually touted their "60 day money back guarantee". How could I lose? Unfortunately they were never able to transfer my number or provide me with a working phone. I attempted to port my number to Vonage 4 times.
I canceled the non-functional service and requested my money back as per the 60 day money back guarantee. Vonage now points me at their terms of service (which I never agreed to when signing up) that says they don't provide a refund for pre-paid service. They think they don't have to provide a refund!
I've quoted the relevant section:
3.10 No Refunds for Pre-Paid Service Plan Customers. Subject to the Money Back Guarantee and applicable law, we will not refund any Service Fees or any other amounts paid in connection with any pre-paid Service plans.
»vonage.ca/features_terms_service.php
Despite the many cancellation calls and emails they continue to say my account is active and try to charge me monthly fees. I successfully put in a dispute with visa on the Vonage unauthorized charges. I'm back with Telus. The future is friendly!

@comcast.net | lousy review I can understand your frustrations, but how can you give them a poor review on call quality if you never got to use the service. Also, by signing up for their service, you agree to their terms. It's your fault you did not read them.

-Frank Vonage employee alert!
I did talk to their technical support personnel using their ATA so I am familiar with their poor sound quality.
I'm not sure what terms you're talking about? The part where they clearly claimed they have a "60 day no questions asked money back guarantee." and then reneged when I went to use the money back guarantee? Vonage is nothing more than shysters.
