"Free VoIP adapter, has a screen and QoS, amazingly cheap,"
"Too bandwidth reliant, doesn't have a battery back-up (buying that seperately is annoying), tech support,"
"Extremely good service but has some minor set backs I recommend to all with a good DL and especially UL"

I wanted to get Vonage because of my love of new technologies and the massive amount of money I save. I got the unlimited residential plan. The order was fast and simple, got to transfer my number, and the self install came in a few days. I was amazed at how smooth everything was/is. I got the V-Portal which is free when I got it if you got the service online. The best parts of Vonage are the price (seriously amazing), the free adapter with an LCD,and the emailed Voicemail. Worst things are the tech support (not THAT bad), and the annoying fact that your connection determines (for the most part) your call quality and reliability. Say you're like me with an impaired (400 kbps) upload and you have this? Dropouts for 30 seconds sometimes, and eerie sounds are annoying. Yes I know this is not really fair for blaming Vonage but I'm that stoked on finding problems.
If you have a good DL and UL this is just for you.

Great service. wish they would've had my area code covered several years ago i would've switched a long long time ago. this makes moving so much easier. no transferring, waiting for a new line to be activated. very few fees to pay unlike the regular 'ma bell' telephone companies.
-update 12/01/2008- service has been very good the last 4 years. sad to see that they are increasing the basic 500 price. means I will be dropping vonage sometime this spring.
-update 7/27/2009- Dropped Vonage about 2 months ago. didn't use more than 100minutes a month and its saving me over $300/year now so yea. it was decent service though. too pricey

I signed up for Vonage in May, 2004. I can't say enough about how terrific this service is. It has saved a TON of money, both on long distance calls in the US and on international calls.
The service has been stable, the quality of calls is excellent, as good as or better than POTS. The couple of issues I had in the beginning were handled by Vonage CS techs in a professional manner. I believe I waited on hold once for 30 minutes, the other two times for less than 10....but since then (last summer) I haven't had any issues at all. At that time, the techs spent much time with me, at least once for an hour, troubleshooting and identifying my problem (one problem turned out to be my phone, and one an issue with a backbone in London...neither had to do with Vonage).
Even my calls to London were crystal clear.....one of my issues was with static/occasional dropped call....which turned out to be on the London end. Once that was dealt with over there, the static disappeared, and the calls were great.
They also have great features: voicemail, call forwarding, caller ID, porting of POTS #, nice web dashboard, etc.
I am saving hundreds of dollars using Vonage...its the best thing I have ever done. However, I still understand that my service is at the mercy of my internet connection, and that it could be affected by that. I also have a basic POTS line for 911 emergency calls.
I can't think of one bad thing to say about Vonage at this point.
3/15/07 Still using Vonage, and am still VERY happy with it. The calls are crystal clear and the service is rock solid. I can't remember the last time I had an outage that was caused by Vonage. I've recommended Vonage to my daughter and they are also very happy with it. I would encourage anyone to try it, keeping in mind that ANY VoIP service is highly dependent on the stability of your ISP connection.
12/26/07 Not much new to report, Vonage is still as solid as ever for me. Hopefully they will get their patent issues straightened out and be able to continue this great service. I have no desire to move to my ISP's VoIP service at this time.
1/3/09 Still a happy Vonage user. Have absolutely no complaints or issues.
7/26/09 Nothing new to report, still happily using Vonage. I no longer have a POTS line, just Vonage and my cell phone, for which I found a carrier (AT & T) that works here in my home. I'm completely happy with Vonage. No outages to report other than the occasional one from a storm, when internet goes out. Having a cell negates that problem.

Update on 7-25-09
Well I signed up for Vonage again and again I am happy with the service. This time around I went with unlimited and again it is solid. No real issues just wanted to update the price for this review.
---------------
Purchased on 9-23 at Best Buy even though I knew I could get it for free from Vonage.com. I wanted it asap for this weekend, so I went and purchased it. The install was very easy and the instructions were detailed and to the point. The hardest part was typing in the port numbers through my router lol
My only grip is the ability to have DirectTIVO call in to update and activate. This was the main reason I purchased Vonage was for my Tivo. But I have quickly began to use it for personal use. The quality of calls is the same as POTS line IMHO.
I love Vonages website abilities to forward calls, voicemail, etc.. Very good website intergration with the service.
I will update in around a month to post if it is still easy sailing or if I had issues.
Again if you want to stick it to the Bells and save yourself money go with VOIP!

We just had our 6-Year anniversary with Vonage on March 7, 2009. Service is reliable, and sound quality is crystal-clear. No problems ever in those 6 years.
Also got nine Vonage referrals within that time, some of those going on or past their 5-year anniversary.
I'm so happy I ditched POTS all those years ago.... I've saved SO MUCH $$$ from AT&T and Verizon over that time.... makes me smile just thinking about it!
Attaboy, Vonage!!!

I have had Vonage for over 2 years and love it! I have a very reliable Roadrunner connection. This is the secret to loving or hating Vonage. The only outages I have had have been when Roadrunner went down. But even then the calls were routed to my cell phone so none were missed. I have saved over a hundred dollars a month $2400!!!!!!
Update: Vonage still rocks!!! Can't beat the value! 911 works!!! Had to use it for ambulance last week. We call anywhere we want and talk as long as we like for $31 a month! I did install a Linksys WRT54GL router with Tomato firmware the QOS is much better
Update: After 5 years...Vonage just works I have had ZERO issues with the service. If Roadrunner never dropped I would have no issues

I have had Vonage service since 2005, and it has worked very consistently for me. My wife does a lot of international calling, and even with a couple of hours of calls to out-of-plan countries each month, the cost is still around $35 on average.

I have rejoined Vonage and find them to be good enough. Worth the $32 a month.
I have been selected to use the free 50 Vonage Visual Voicemail, I may have to pay for this service as i find it very useful....

I've had Vonage a year now, the service is reliable, the price is right but the support! I recently moved and changed my address for 911 calling on Vonage, the address according to Vonage is invalid. So I e-mailed the 911 address failure notice to them THREE days ago. No response, I sent another request a day ago, no responce. This is NOT the first time I've waited days for support, once you get someone on your case, they are very professional and caring BUT you have to wait and wait for someone to help you. So, now my 911 dailing doesn't work and I'm waiting three days for someone to pick up the ticket. Maybe time to abandion ship. Too bad, poor customer service can kill a company.
UPDATE DAY FOUR
I am now on DAY FOUR waiting for Vonage to address my ticket. No reply in four days.
UPDATE DAY FIVE
No response to my ticket for my 911 issue.
UPDATE DAY SIX and 1/2
Received a reply to my ticket after 6 1/2 days of waiting. I must wait an additional 2 to 4 weeks for an "investigation" of why my address failed Vonage's 911 verifcation.
Switched to TWC Phone, its was cheaper with the triple play package and the support is much better

Decided to go with Vonage after talking with some long time users who are friends. Decided to give the V-tech a shot since I would need a new cordless phone anyway and I could just plug the unit into a cat5 outlet near my kitchen. Picked up the unit at best buy. When I entered the MAC address during service setup it said it was not valid. I called the help number specified and got a CSR in India who couldn't help but gave me another 800 number. This time the rep understood the problem and put in a ticket but advised the easiest thing would be to return it since they wouldn't get to it until a few days. I decided to hang tight and try it in a few, when I retried the Mac address registered but sent me into pricing for Canada (I guess they almost got it right). I decided to return the thing and got a free (after rebate) linksys phone adapter and a couple of Uniden Phones for less money. Things went smooth until the very last step when the order screen came up with an error. Called India, who gave me another 800 number in the states... Got the order finished and everything works pretty good so far. I was with IDT $57 a month all included but am getting a better value with Vonage. After a few months i'll update, but so far so good.
Update 5/3/2007
Since initial install everything is A-OK. I think there were 2 or 3 service interruptions that I was aware of during my time with Vonage, but the service outage call forwarding feature made sure we didn't miss any calls. I also, unfortunately for my burned up F250, had to use the e911 service and it worked excellently. Fearing that it wouldn't work correctly, I ran to a neighbors and asked them to call, they were told that they received that call and were already on route.
Update 11/06/2007
Rock Solid
Update Left Vonage strictly for the Verizon Triple Play. After paying for Internet and TV for all these years figured the Triple Play saves me about the cost of the phone. Generally, Vonage was GREAT, wouldn't think twice about going back to them if the circumstances were different.
