I signed up with the service at a shop near the Jusco supermarket in Mid-Valley Megamall where they were offering a free modem for the price of the no-modem package (at 512/128); RM88/month (US$23) instead of RM99 (US$26).

After about two weeks I still hadn't heard anything, so I figured maybe the shop never sent my application to Telekom. I rang Telekom, they said it was in progress (though they mentioned something about an "educational" package, which makes me think the MVMM shop's offer wasn't quite on the level), and the next day (Saturday) I got a phone call from a contractor/installer. He said he could come over later that day, and he did.

After some messing about he managed to knock out my voice line (no dial tone) and of course no DSL. But he configured the modem (ZTE ZXDSL 831, you know, that famous household-name brand ZTE, the Sony of northeastern China) and left it with me. I poked around and figured out that the phone jack was broken; went to MYDIN and bought another one and then my phone was working again. But still no DSL (no sync). On Monday I rang the installation center, they told me to telephone the contractor, he said it would work that night, etc., etc., and eventually after some more phone calls the next day the modem had sync.

But I couldn't get out. Looked at the modem config page and it turned out that while it had been assigned an IP address, it had no default route. I added a route for 0.0.0.0, setting the PPP peer as the next hop, and then I could reach the outside world.

Also, I noticed that the modem was reporting a connection at 384/128, rather than the 512/128 that I paid for.

Well, the performance has been really lousy. My pings overseas are usually in the 1000ms range; from 18.00-24.00 in the evenings they are more like 2000ms (corroborated by tracerouting back to here from overseas, though the big jump in RTT happens several hops away from me). This makes many interactive applications irritating or unworkable. And I have never had a download go faster than 10KB/s, which is about one fourth of what I should be getting.

Before getting this installed I was using TMNet Hotspot (horrible in its own way due to constant authentication problems, but the network performance itself is generally good). Do they use their SDSL service for that? And does the SDSL traffic take a different route out of the country? Very mysterious.

I wonder if the problem is my choice of next hop in the static route; perhaps if I'd been assigned a router properly I would have a different path that worked better. Repeated attempts to dis- and re-connect have consistently resulted in my not receiving a default route, though. Either it's Telekom or this shonky off-brand modem.

In summary, the service is barely faster than dialup; the latency is never better than - and often far worse than - satellite access in sub-Saharan Africa (and I thought that was the worst that planet Earth had to offer); if I weren't an experienced user and phone troubleshooter I wouldn't be connected at all and I'd have no phone; and they quite clearly haven't provided me with the speed package that I ordered and am presumably going to be billed for. I have had DSL and other residential broadband in many countries all over the world, on 5 continents, countries ranging from rich to poor and underdeveloped to highly advanced. This is by far the worst service I've ever had. Really my only consolation is that it's also the cheapest service I've ever had.

"Relatively fast, when it works"
"Has (sometimes major) techincal problems every month"
"Get it only if you're desperate for speed; stay with dialup otherwise"
Pre Sales information:

Value for money:

Signed up for it in July 2002; got it only in October. First was that the modem was out of stock, then ports needed to be configured, then sent back down to KL for re-configuration. Of course, since it's Malaysia, everything works slowly, from customer service to technicians to Internet access.

To be fair to TMnet (and Telekom), their services have improved greatly since the end of 2002. I faced all sorts of techincal problems every month, severe enough to result in several days without Internet access at all. Recently however, reliability has improved, with only minor problems cropping up every month, or every 2 months.

Speed is fine with me, although I wish they had more efficient routing. A recent traceroute indicated that they have about 7-8 local routers before hitting the international gateway. Latency is so-so as well, even to the first hop. Routing to less common countries such as eastern Europe or China is pretty bad as well, with latency being very high (~500ms). Don't even ask about speeds to those countries...

I'm not sure if TMNet's breaking off with Telekom is a good idea since now they often blame each other when something goes wrong. TMNet will blame Telekom's lines, and Telekom will blame TMNet's hardware.

Tech support is the worst I've ever seen. The techies always blame users whenever we call up, saying it's something wrong at our end. When we finally convince them it's not our end, they'll blame it on... viruses! Doh, if my ISP gets infected by viruses all the time, what can you say about it? The helpdesk people don't know the first thing about how DSL works, or for that matter, how the Internet works. Oh and when they say they'll call you back, you can take it that you won't hear from them again. Practically useless tech support; good for wasting your money on the call itself. Of course there are good staff mending the helpdesk from time to time - courteous, efficient and willing to help you. Unfortunately these are few and far in between.

Bottom line: Get it if you're a moderately heavy user, with a dialup bill (combined phone & Internet bills) of >60. If not, stay with dialup. You've had dialup for years so you don't miss what you never had. Or, look for alternative broadband access especially if you're in the Klang Valley.

Now I wish we had faster upstream packages...

*All reviews on speed and "connectability" is based on my geographical location, which is a house in Penang. Your mileage may vary depending on location.

FYI.....I'm not a PC techie but a self-taught PC user....so my apologys for any wrong terms or words that i will use in my review...:)

I'm presently using my home PC Intel Pentium III 384 SDRAM Opera 7.51 browser (very fast) with Aztech High Speed Modem.

I've only upgrade to broadband (streamyx) 384/128 about six months ago since i've found out that i could upgrade my line during that time & i thought it was quite fast & very much cheaper than dial-up since all the while i've been using dial-up (so the difference of speed) & the savings that i'll get.

The process of applying (filing application forms etc) is quite fast & they told me that it 'll take about two weeks to install & connect.....& right on time too.

Anyway to make it short, since i couldn't play videos without freezing in some websites, i've decided to upgrade to 512/128. I've found out that the upgrade doesn't make any difference with the speed when i try to play the same videos so i went to my local Kedai Telekom & complained to the ppl in the helpdesk about the speed that i'm getting. Its seems that the ppl in-charge doesn't have the IT know-how & this coming from a amateur like me...:(

They said that probably there is something wrong with my line & they will send their technician to check them......but after the third complaint, they advised me to downgrade back to 384/128 cos' they said they can't solved the problem & i agreed to their advice.

Since i'm not satisfied with their answers & curious to find out what's wrong with my speed, i google searched "speed" & it brought me to this website...& VOILA!!! my problem is solved bigtime when i increase my RWIN with DRTCP & the speed keeps raising.....:) And since then, i've reupgrade back to 512/128 with success.

My compliment to the CHEF of this website.....:) LOL

    User Experience
This is the Third year I used the service. So far I had No whatsoever problems during the year 2005 which is a great improvement. The Problems that I mean was user side problems such as Phone Line quality and Etc.

    Speed and Latency
The speeds that I got was 512/256 (Down/Up) which is prety decent. The Latency to international sites are quite high which makes it hard to surf on those international sites. If you are thinking of playing games internationally you better be aware that the latency may be high and that may create some lag. Bittorrent speeds however was constant.

    Advertising
Advertising has been trimmed down lately. But then again they introduced some new packages that are I think made just to trick customers.

    Tech Support
Tech support is not much use either on the phone or e-mail. Everyone gets the same mail. I don't even think they know what you are saying.

I was one of the pioneer user of Streamyx three++ years ago in my area (Subang Jaya)... my friends and neighbours don't even know what Streamyx is all about at that time... After for about 2 months I registered it (RM111/384kbps package), at last a technician came to my house and checked my phone line and he said the signal was ok/strong... 3 days later another tech. guy came to install my modem... it was Aztech DSLTurbo900... the speed was not bad at all at that time, maybe there was still a few subscribers! At that time I still use manual dial-up b'coz no router yet... but the dial-up was a breeze and didn't get disconnected! About a year++ later they (TMnut) introduced the new rates... so they shited me to RM66 package without modem... Speed still OK but then my younger bro wanted to share the connection with me, so I deploy a D-Link wireless router + print server. I use wired ethernet and he use wireless-lan (PCMCIA card with PCI dock). We downloaded files a lot so I felt that the speed is not enough... goto House Of Internet KJ (now clickers) to upgrade the package to 512kbps... took about 40 days after they called me to inform that my package was upgraded, have to change my username also... after using the new package I felt that there is no speed increment... So I lodged a complain and took them a week to call me and said that my speed had been reconfigured or what?! But I still can't feel the difference until now! But then I'll just keep quiet arr! I'm tired!

streamyx? seem good to have this line since there are no other choice. overall, in my opinion, Malaysia's broadband service still need to upgrade, explore for best result. streamyx also need to improve all the company stuff like connection line (for user who apply for 512, but still get 384) and customer service. i wonder what happen to 'blind' user who apply the 512, but still get the fake connection which is 384...must waste all money they rent for. so take back your rights! anyway, hope TMnet will work harder to improve it's service and always aware for user who apply 512 package..*sigh*.

    Hi there,

First of all i live in Keramat area i did apply the line for Streamyx so the application to one day for the phone lines, and the next day i went to Telekom to submit my Streamyx form. It was to fast n furios they manage to installed my package Streamyx RM 66 with modem in the same day in the evening. I did make a personal call to the contractor to make an appointment in the same day.

As usually the contractor make a call to the center and open the DSL link to my phone lines. A few days later a lightning storm occur at my place and the ZTE Modem was fired by the storm managed to get back the replacement modem in a few days ( working days ). Carefull dude ur ADSL modem is easily can be overload by lightning my onboard LAN card was broken in the incident.

For the 384 Kbps speed i manage to get 310 kbps when i make the bandwith test maybe my area was near the mother switch . Lucky me rite? Anyway is there anyone here have tested Time Broadband Services? I have tested it once in Starbucks the services is damn too fast n furios but the installation fees was quite expensive and i heard when u subscribe the 384 you can get the full speed with no problem.

I hope someone who have used it at home pls make a review now Time Broadband is a competitor of Streamyx. Anyway tq Streamyx for the best effort broadband hope you can make the services cheaper
