I had SBC broadband 5 years ago and hated it. Poor customer support...spotty service...couldn't wait to finish the 1 year contract and leave. Was getting 768 down and 102 up speeds for $40/mo....got 1500 (1280 net) down / 128 (102 net) up speeds from Covad for same price ---- 4 years later the market changed and ATT (SBC) came out with $25/mo for "pro" 3000 down / 384 up speeds and no contract. I had 4 years of flawless performance, but went back to SBC for the speed bump and cost reduction.......I'm still trying to get the service to work. I've had more outages and degrades in 5 weeks than I had in the preceding 4 years.

The third Speedstream 4100B modem just arrived today to replace the one that totally failed....the first was replaced when tier two couldn't see any other explanation for terrible SNR up margins (of course they said there was no issue with the line)....had to plug the modem into the service jack outside and totally disconnect the house wiring before they would believe it wasn't a problem on my end.

I am hopeful to get my service up to speed and stable with the ATTDirect forum here....Google searches are a good thing! At least through that vehicle I should be able to have a logical discussion with real troubleshooting and straight answers.

UPDATE: Service initiated on 4/27 -- 2nd modem installed 5/18 to try to correct dropped sync issue -- fair function for 2 1/2 weeks then modem failed -- third modem installed 6/6 and I finally broke the code on where to get proper technical support!!!!!! The ATT Direct forum right here is superb. Line quality has gone from flakey to solid --- measured throughput is exactly as advertised finally -- and I am now very confident that the tech support through the online forum will allow me to keep this service long-term.

UPDATE 10/05/2009: I was out of the country for 70 days and during my time away my wife noticed a severe slow-down and loss of throughput...when I got back it took me two days to trace an internal wiring issue and then another two days to get the external line checked/repaired and the rback reset. The ATT Direct forum is absolutely the key to getting things fixed when needed!!! Still have Pro package, but price has risen to $30/month....still getting 3008/512 service (net 2590/436) and it's back to rock solid.

I still have the 6M/786 package. The connection remains solid, and the the speed has gotten more consistent as it has been in the past years. With no caps, it's a good deal.

    If/when AT&T institutes the ridiculous caps, I will be an AT&T ex-customer.

    9/18/2009 and all's well.

    Caps

If AT&T implements CAPs, we'll be forced to use whichever is cheaper and serve our needs, cheapest w/ the highest CAPs, of course, as it's duopoly in our area.

For $25/mo., I reliably get 1700kbps/350kbps. Great for web surfing and downloading music. Free modem. Somewhat confusing install, but easy, overall.

It is sub par, not terrible, for xbox live. I do not know if it is the meager upload speed or IF dsl has high latency, BUT it makes for a laggy experience for other players when I am host.

    My Other Reviews·AT&T U-Verse
    ·magicjack.com
    Updated Aug 28th, 2009:

Got Dry Loop up & running the day after the scheduled due date. Had an issue connecting the feeder pair to the correct Apt's IW -- but now it is all hooked up & working great.

Not really a big fan of the overhead loss with ADSL vs U-Verse VDSL internet, but oh well. Still getting about 5.2-5.3 Mbps down/.6 Mbps up. And consistent as a rock.

Had a little bit of an adventure migrating my AT&T email address from an U-Verse account to an ADSL account, but after a couple of phone calls to ADSL Tech Support & U-Verse Tech Support, got the email address disassociated from the U-Verse account so it could then be associated with my ADSL account.

If you cannot get U-Verse, then AT&T ADSL is a good alternative!

    Updated Aug 5th, 2009:

I had to move to another apartment that is not U-Verse "green"/available. So I am going back to ADSL once again. Scheduled to be installed August 11th. I really do not like that the dry loop prices keep going up. When I first had Pro Dry Loop, it was $30/month. Then it went up to $35/month. Now Pro Dry Loop is $40/month. Decided to just pay the extra $5/month and get Elite Dry Loop @ $45/month. Don't understand how DSL is getting more expensive to provide... Will update again when service is up & running

    Updated Dec 15th, 2008:

As of the end of September, I have ceased being an ADSL customer and am now a FTTN/VDSL customer of AT&T's U-Verse service. ADSL served me well.

    Updated June 22nd, 2008:

I recently moved for work purposes. So naturally I wanted to transfer my service to my new place. I was told that Dry Loop accounts cannot be transferred, and instead I would have to cancel the old account at the old address and start new service on a new account at the new address. Fine. I set up the old account to terminate on the same day as the new account is due to go active....

Fast Forward to due date: I plug in my DSL modem, it syncs up, I pull up the AT&T DSL registration website, type in my new account number, and it gives me an error and says to call tech support. I pick up the phone. After doing basic troubleshooting, Tech Support then transfers me to Sales. Sales informs me that this new order had been canceled -- not just that, but that I called AT&T between my order date and the due date to cancel the order, because, as they told me, I wanted to keep my current POTS and Line Share DSL at that address. Well, I'll let you imagine my reaction to that load of crap. So basically, I have to order new service AGAIN and get a new account number, and of course, a new due date, 1 week later. I said you can get it sooner or I'm calling Comcast. The CSR said there is no way to speed up the order. I hung up. Called Comcast, heard their offer. Told the CSR there I would think about it.

A couple days later, I called AT&T back, spoke to customer care, they gave me some sort of account credit, took my new order (still due 1 week after this date), I expressed my concerns with this whole process, and in the end just let this new order go thru. Now here is the kicker: I had DSL service on this line the whole time this process was going on: The whole time my DSL modem would sync up to AT&T and I could go to AT&T's registration website, and some very limited browsing on att.com. All I needed to get the full internet was a valid DSL account number to complete registration. So basically, about 3 days before this final order was due, I tried the registration site again (with this new account number) -- and it worked. So I got my service going about 3 days before the official due date, but about a week and a half AFTER my original due date on that 1st order that I mysteriously called in to cancel because I wanted to keep POTS and Line Share DSL I never had at my new apartment...

Also, apparently AT&T has raised prices for Dry Loop DSL, as I was paying $29/month for the Pro Tier before I moved, but was told that for my new service at the Pro Tier level, it is now $34/month. I tried to negotiate into keeping the same price I had before, but did not have any luck. Oh well.

    Original Review:

Ordered originally as line share, as I had not been educated as to Dry Loop (Thank you, DSLReports!). I originally ordered in July 07 with a 1 year contract, however the order did not get completed until mid-August. After the "live" date, found out the drop was not connected to my apartment's line at the apartment NID. AT&T fixed that, then I had service (had to have first bill adjusted from the "expected" live date to when they actually had the service up and going). I converted over to dry loop sometime around December 07/January 08 (still under the same 1 year contract -- no new contract was required). No issues there. I got a SpeedStream 4100b DSL modem (free after rebate). I also got a 3-month free service credit for coming over from Comcast (after 3 months of paid service).

Line Share price for Pro (3 Mbps down/.5 Mbps up) speed was $24.99/month, and now Dry Loop Pro is $28.99/month, no taxes or fees over that. And no useless landline phone charges either.

The only bad was reported in the AT&T Midwest forum here, where one of the routers in Elmhurst, IL was malfunctioning and roughly half the internet was inaccessible (any IP address that ended in an odd number would not route). That has been fixed. And the problem/issue was only there for I think a day. AT&T caught it very quickly.

The advertised speed and max speed may not be on par with Comcast's top (6 Mbps with powerboost to 12 Mbps locally), but I love the CONSISTENCY of the 3 Mbps. DSL does NOT slow down to dial-up like speeds between 3 and 9 pm on school days. My old Comcast line was notorious for that.

All around, I have been and am very pleased with my AT&T Pro Speed DSL.

    dry loop dsl charge

I think you will find you are still paying 2
$29 for your internet, the additional is the charge for the incoming line to carry the DSL.

    Re: dry loop dsl charge

There was no sort of line charge or taxes or anything beyond the $29/month for my Dry Loop Line at my old apartment (I still have a copy of a bill), so if there is some sort of line charge or tax on my new account, well I will be contacting billing for an explanation, at the least.

I have the 3/512 DSL package (AT&T Pro DSL), having upgraded from the AT&T Express DSL.

Upgrading was painless. The Speakeasy speedtest showed download speeds of 2224 kbps and upload speeds of 334 kbps, generally better than Express, but not quite up to the theoretical maximum of the Pro package.

The only disappointment of the service is the lack of technical support if you're using anything better than consumer-grade networking gear.

Postings in the dslreports.com forums helped me configure my Cisco 2621+WIC1-ADSL.

I had to purchase a new 2Wire Router/DSL modem for around $88 with tax. If I had wanted to use my old Earthlink modem it would have cost me around $90 in phone tech support charges. So they get you either way.

But in the long run I'm saving a lot of money with AT&T DSL Direct.

My internet service has been very stable and working very well. It even give me no problems in heavy rain, and windy conditions here in southern cali. I have nothing to complain about except I wish AT&T would get U-Verse here.

    ___________________________________________________________________

Although I was connected almost right away I first ordered my DSL a week before the intal due date of being hooked up on the 18th. I was hooked up right away. Service was fast as far as getting the order in and getting the equipment.

I had a few issues regarding my speeds but that was due to bad wiring in my home and not the fault of SBC. 1 Day after I reported the problem a tech was at my house. Did everything step by step. Tested my lines both inside and out. Was very helpful, and very nice.

Turns out that I had a bad phone jack in my house. Did a line stress test and found out that was creating a problem because noise was causing my speed drops.

Only took him about 30mins to resolve it. I thought that was pretty fast stead.

Tech support was very helpful in getting my issue fixed as well and I had no problems with them as far as I can tell.

Note to all new DSL persons, you may want to completely test you lines inside and out or have your telco do it for you as this was an issue for me. Also find out how close you are from the CO/RT. Your rep wil lbe able to tell you how far you are.

Above all I am very happy with my connection. Great pings, good for gamming.

Again I suggest multiple testing is the key to a very stable, good connection.

I am synced at 6016/608 and my actual speeds are Download = 5.074 Mbps / Upload = 520.76 kbps. Which is more then I can ask for. Well worth the money I think.

I am glad I got rid of cable, phew, what a nightmare they were. Thank god for SBC DSL.

    Updated 03/19/04:-

Well its been a month now and all is well. Service is up, working great. No down time what so ever and has been up 247.

Rock solid performance, fast speeds, and no down time. SBC has turned out to be my best ISP thus so far. Thank you SBC, Your connection rocks.

    Middle finger to Charter Comm.

    Updated 06/11/04:-

Well its been 3 Months now sence I did my last review for SBC. I have to say its been very stable and very little down time for me. I think out of the 5-6 Months I have been with them they have only been down for 2 days out of that whole time.
Usually when they go down they get it backup and working almost instant.

Pings are very low for me. Connection/Speeds very very stable. I get what I am paying for. I have been though Rain, Winds, Cold, and Hot and no issues with it unlike when I had cable.

Anyways SBC thank you for your service, its been a pleasure. They got my vote.

    Update 08/11/09:-

Well so far DSL has been working awesome. No problems at all, knock on wood. Still running the same sence back in 04. Speeds seem a tad better.
