Overall a very solid connection. Wish I could get the 15mbit service I had with Comcast in NorCal, though!

Well, let's just say the price is right by the speed isn't. $30 for 3 Mbps is a good price but I could not handle the speed when compared to comcast in this area. $35 for 6 Mbps maybe I could get used to but at 3 Mbps it's just too slow. Cannot get the Elite package because I'm too far away from the CO. Set up was easy, I just had to wait until AT&T provisioned my line the next day before I could use it.
Looks like this is going back to AT&T and I'm sticking with comcast for now.

I had Earthlink for more than 5 years. I got the run around for years because they claimed my unreliable service (went down weekly especially when it rained 4 miles west of me) was my house wiring. After installing dedicated DSL rated wiring, the reliability was still poor. They kept up with other excuses. I finally switched to AT&T and haven't had a problem since. I have 3MBit service and the modem actually connects at 3.5MB so my actual measured speed is 3Mbits. Earthlink was 1.8 on a 2.5Mbit (I think) service.

"It works, its cheap and I didn't even need to buy a phone line"

Order the 6/512 package 17 July. Operator said modem would arrive on 21 July. Hooked it up 21 July and nothing. 2 Tech Support calls later and a tech visit got it up and running. Ping times are good and multiple speed test show me getting what was advertised. Also I didn't have to pay for a phone line that I wouldn't use and not be penalized for it (comcast sucks). It's a little slower than my parents Comcast internet but this one seems more reliable during the busy parts of the day. The motorola modem provided is tiny compared to my parents cable modem but I had to pay $75 for it since I got the DSL w/o phone line. Overall it was a pleasurable experience.
Update 18 AUG 2009:
Well I got the little message to update my ISP internet experience. What can I say, it still works, still slower than some of my neighbor's ISP's (comcast) but I still have good latency less than 30 to ATL and 80 to west coast, hasn't been down when I wanted to get on at all and again not being penalized for not having a cable or phone line (ok maybe a little but not as bad as the cable company.) Overall I have had a good experience with AT&T and no slowdowns during peak periods and hope to hop onboard their Uverse offerings when they make it my way.
EDIT
I guess I should add seeing some other reviews I have seen that I can throw a rock from my apartment and hit the DSLAM.

I think I am going to get 1M cable at $20 instead of paying $35 for 1.5 DSL I never get 1.5 downloads anyway, I just need a cable modem,,,
I had to get a phone box installed before I could order DSL or even find out if I could get DSL.
Three years ago I could get 1.5 for $14.99
Now its $24 plus paying for a reduced and really basic phone line. I dont have a phone plugged in, but it gets more expensive without it... Stupid.

"Up-coming U-verse"
"Bellsouth areas still use archaic equipment, Slow upstream on DSL, ULTRA plan not available in many metro areas, Bad CS."
"AT&T U-verse great. Bellsouth Fastaccess is a mis-nomer!"
| |
Bellsouth was the main DSL provider servicing Knoxville up until the recent deal with AT&T. Bellsouth had many problems in this area over the past decade, including lack of DSL availability in many areas due to incompatible concentrators that served many neighborhoods.
I have been with Comcast for several years, and decided to switch to AT&T after learning of their takeover of Bellsouth. I signed up to their DSL service based on the information on the AT&T website. After it was installed, and the first sign of poor speeds were evident, I called AT&T Customer Care to find out what was wrong. After about 2 hours of speaking with clueless representatives, I finally discovered that this area still uses Bellsouth's rather archaic ADSL "FastAccess' plans.
I was signed up for what the sales representative deemed was a 'comparable' FastAccess plan for near the same price of the AT&T DSL plan that I was asking for. I soon found out that they had signed me up for 'FastAccess DSL' rather than what was on the AT&T DSL services website. In my area (Sequoyah Hills) the Xtreme 6 isn't even available, and the maximum upload speed of 386 is painfully slow when uploading videos.
AT&T will be great when the archaic Bellsouth equipment servicing this area is replaced. I would also recommend to verify that you are getting a genuine AT&T plan, and not a Bellsouth DSL 'FastAccess' plan. They can be of similar prices, but are very different on actual speeds.
Steer clear of AT&T DSL in places where "Bellsouth FastAccess" still lingers. You can get MUCH better plans from cable for the same price! FastAccess severely limits the upstream speeds, so if you're into sharing large files or videos, these Bellsouth plans will not be worth the money.

Have had dsl back when it was pacbell at 128k both ways .
It has allways worked and our down time has been less then 1 day . I love the fact that as long as I can get power to the modem it just works unlike if the cable company has no power.
I wish I could get faster the the 5.25 down but really do not see it even with doing directv on-demand and other things using the bandwith

"Low latency, high uptimes, great for internet gaming, VOIP, VPN, VNC, RDP, Teamviewer, streaming video"
"DSL download/upload speed is still governed by distance to CO, quality of inside/outside lines"
"Great bang for the buck, no caps or sandvine voodoo, low latency network and excellent onsite BBR staff"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings above consensus)

All in all very reliable, I don't recall ever having downtime. When I turn it on, it's always there, always works. A must for today's work-at-home professional, hardcore gamer, or system admin/techie. The AT&T backbone network is one of the best for low latency/realtime apps. There is no sandvine or bandwidth cap voodoo yet (that I know of) in our Chicago market. And I hope it continues this way. I do part-time IT consulting so it works great with VNC/RDP, and Teamviewer/Showmypc. I'm also a hardcore Counterstrike fanatic, getting good latency/pings as far away as the UK.
As with all DSL technology, the maximum download/upload speed you can get is governed by how far you are from the CO (central office), your inside and outside line quality, and to a smaller extent, your DSL modem. that is why I gave only a "3" for services, because I can't get higher speeds due to my distance to the CO. (I'm waiting for you FIOS, come to papa OK?)
On a final note, I want to give props to David from AT&T Midwest Tech Support (Granite City,Illinois). He has helped me the last few years on my various questions/fine tuning our family's DSL lines to get maximum speed and reliability. Without a doubt, David has gone above and beyond to help us in our time of need. Thank you David! We appreciate all your help!
cheers,
GadgetPig
Current CPE setup: Netgear DGN2000 (yeah yeah, I know AT&T doesn't support this,Shhh! But it works great! And it's nice to only reboot one device instead of 2.
Set your Netgear DGN2000 DSL specs:
Multiplexing Method : "LLC based" VPI ="0" VCI= "35"
Setup WPA/WPA2 wireless PSK PPPOE (idle tmeout=60minutes) Set primary DNS to 4.2.2.1 Set secondary DNS to 208.67.222.222 and you're golden!

AT&T "NEW IMPROVED" Yahoo Mail Servers Are a Deal Breaker!
AT&T DSL broadband has been migrating customers to their "new", "improved" mail servers... 3rd party, Yahoo. While Yahoo is a fine company, this move was another terrible step in AT&T's continuing downward spiral of not being in-tuned with their customers.
My business, while growing tremendously, has a home office. I want to be able to send emails with my business email account name, regardless of the ISP I use to connect. Up until my account was migrated, this was easy. AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) used my ISP email account to transparently verify the account as legitimate and allow mail to be sent. My "to", "from" and "reply to"'s could be anything I wanted... mybusiness.com, hotmail.com, yahoo.com, etc.
So when a recipient got an email from me, they saw my business email address in the from and reply to fields and could reply through that business account.
NO LONGER! NOW... EVERY email sent must have my AT&T email address as the from AND the reply to. So, the recipient will receive email branded with AT&T's email address (note, one I don't use at all...ever). If the recipient just hit reply, the email goes to that account, not my business account. And according to AT&T, that is just the way it will be. Tough noogies on me for using a home office with "residential" DSL.
GET THIS THOUGH! For triple the monthly DSL fee I pay now, my DSL can be "upgraded" internally at the office to allow me to have the functionality I want. No line changes, no new installations, just pay them more money and they will come through with the goods. But for how long until the next "gotcha"? Seems more like extortion to me than a "new improved" service.
As a small business, we consider telecommuting and home offices an excellent resource to keeping overhead low and being able to pass that savings along to customers and be able to employ more people. But our business is important enough that we want to brand it with OUR name, not Ma Bell's.
So, we begin the process of finding a provider who will provide us with what we need at a reasonable price. Bye-bye Bell
