Tried for over a month to get dsl service for my mom. At first they said it was available. Then they said the address didn't match the phone line. They would check and call me back in 24 hrs. Two days later no call, so I called them back. No record of previous conversation so had to start at beginning. Same problem with address conflict. They said they will check and call me back. No call.
Third call to them. Same thing. But this time they said will send someone out to check her line. Will take 4 days and they will call me back. No call after a week.
Called them again. No record. They cant place an order number until they fix the conflict. This goes on for a month. Back and forth. After a month, she called the cable company and she had dsl from them the next day. Done.
I suppose this was a unique problem but the way ATT handled it was unprofessional. Turns out they kept cancelling the install because there was a line conflict. But no one ever told me they kept canceling the order.
Well, the only good part was she got a $30 credit on her phone bill for signing up for dsl. Mailed to the wrong address LOL

I've had SNET/SBC/AT&T DSL service for 7 years (2 years at my prior residence, 5 years at my current residence). Over those 7 years the overall quality of the service has been average with the usual intermittent problems, outages, issues, etc. I had an issue 4 years ago where the connection kept dropping. After an incredibly frustrating session with Level 1 helpdesk (which at the time was obviously outsourced overseas), replacing my original Speedstream 5100a modem with a Speedstream 5100b resolved the issue. I use this with a Linksys WRT54G router to connect 2 laptops and 1 desktop wirelessly and 1 desktop and 1 printer wired.
However, over the past 6 months or so, connectivity issues have arisen again and been getting steadily worse. At first I thought it was time for a new modem. After reading many bad reviews of the modems AT&T offers and reading many good reviews of the Actiontec GT724WGR modem/router, I purchased the Actiontec. I had it up an running in no time, but the same issue persisted with the DSL connection dropping several times a day with no discernable pattern to the disconnects. I started looking at the modem readings (switching back and forth between the Speedstream and Actiontec to eliminate the modem being the problem) and noticed that whenever I rebooted the modem, the SNR on the downstream side would start at a decent level (10-13), but after a time (sometimes minutes, sometimes hours) would steadily drop to 0 (or negative) and then disconnect. The upstream side was always very solid.
After doing everything possible on my side (first replacing all of the filters, then installing a DSL splitter at the NID and running a home-run cable from there straight to the modem) I called AT&T, and after the usual waste-of-time diagnostics, they sent a technician to the house. He checked everything out and naturally he got a good signal. So did my modem when he was there, but naturally it degraded a few hours after he left. In all fairness however, I must say that the tech was terrific trying everything he could including replacing the card in the remote terminal just in case that was the problem. But no such luck - the problem persisted.
So I opened another ticket with AT&T using their online system (which is nice). They tried calling me 3 times without reaching me so they closed the ticket. Real nice customer service policy - they never left a number to call back or anything like that. So that didn't help my frame of mind. Plus, when the technician was at my house, he mentioned that my street (which is a dead-end street 2 miles long with approximately 50 houses on it, which I assume means we won't see fiber/U-Verse for a very, very long time, if ever) has always been problematic for AT&T.
One other issue was that, for some unknown reason, AT&T kept lowering my speed. I've been signed up for the Pro level (3.0/512) for a year (upgraded from Express), but at least twice in the past 3 months dropped back to the Express level (1.5/384). When the tech was at the house, he noticed the speed was set too low and was able to call it in and get it fixed right away. A week later is was back to Express level. No notice, warning, or communication of any kind. Another example of the lack of customer service.
The end result: after hearing that I live on a "problematic" street, seeing AT&T's poor customer service policy of closing tickets without talking to you, dropping my speed, and continued DSL disconnects, I've made the plunge into the world of cable. Good bye AT&T - you had plenty of chances, but since you are truly a dinosaur in the telecom world, its time to jetison you.
(Note: the $70 monthly charge I specified included all-distance voice service - I've kept the voice with AT&T as I've never had a problem with that)

Used Sprint BroadBand for over 6 years as they were the only option until about 3 years ago. At the "end of the line" our DSL was really bad only ~1500down when we first signed on. Several bad storms the completely ruined both phone and DSL and we're on some newer (at least better) wires. Service now hits a peak of 3K down. We switched to DSL because foliage or some other obstacles had made Sprint so unreliable as to be useless. Cable looked like a very good choice but wasn't economical unless we switched our TV service too. TV is on Dish and have 0 complaints and so unwilling to switch.
Order install was reasonably simple. did it all myself. They supplied 2Wire modem/router/wireless access point and numerous DSL telephone line filters.
The network loading can become very frustrating and essentially stops our service. Especially bad when the kids are all at home trying to do homework that requires them to be online.
Tech assist on the phone during the early days was very good.
When I've requested technical service (line repairs)the response has generally been very good, once I get past the "gatekeeper" talking to a moron that doesn't know electronics from a dress shirt and simply reading a script is extremely frustrating. Once I get past them to the "real" folks, the work gets done as promised and has been right the first time, every time.

Good points: Connection has been pretty reliable
Bad points: In the past, first-line support was pretty bad. It appears better now, however I've only had to call them twice in the last two years. Once was on their side and once was a dead modem on my side.Had to buy a new one...I'd think they should give them away for the recurring business but they won't.
Bottom Line: For 3Mb/sec down/512kbps up, price is right and reliable enough.. It's a far cry better than other solutions I've had to struggle with... rural area solutions like Bubba-Wireless V1 and V2 which really suck. Stay away from "Stream Internet" or "Blue Wireless".

After 3 years of intermittent problems, 8 dsl modem replacements, 20+ service calls (just a few off the top of my head replace dsl modem, install direct line for dsl and filtering the house outside, putting me on a different pair of wires (box to house and RT to box), replace dsl modem x 8, another tech redoing a previous techs wiring job saying its a mess, replacing the phone jack installed inside (by a previous tech) the house for the dsl, ) , hours of lost time on the phone with support , wasting my time in the DIRECT forum, getting hung up on yesterday by someone in the line maintenance department (supposed to be a supervisor too), and AT&T refusing to upgrade their DSL speeds .......
I am done. Ordered Cox cable internet yesterday. It's less expensive and much faster. I bet it works too.
Funny thing is two of the techs told me the card may need replaced but when another tech shows up he does something else and decides that just can not be it. Wasted my time trying to get them to replace that card. No more.
I have not been able to keep a solid connection for more than a hour in over a week. All the numbers are fine and techs have confirmed it.
Not going to get it fixed but someone at the corp office is getting a ear full when they call me back.
I wish the rest of you luck.
Update - 5-12-09 I had to fight with AT&T to get them to stop my service. I told them 5 times to turn it off. Then I had to fight with them to get them to adjust my account back to the time it was supposed to be turned off. The billing is a nightmare! Avoid AT&T!

| Brevard DSL Service TERRIBLE, avoid if possible I ordered DSL Light Service on March 17 and the Agent said that DSL kit would arrive in about 3-4 days.
Called again on March 24 for a follow-up of why the kit did not arrive. After talking to 4 people, the 4th agent on this call said that "someone cancelled your order" and another kit will be sent with a delivery date of Saturday (March 28). Saturday 28, no kit. The kit finaly arrived on March 31.
April 1 a service tech showed up as promised, but could not get service because of an underground cable problem. He said a cable tech would have to fix this problem at an additional cost of $100.00. The problem was ahead of the telco interface box.
April 2 a second DSL kit arrived. So after 3 weeks of delays and a possible $150.00 charge, no DSL service.
I hope that their billing department is not as screwed up as their service department. I should have picked cable service!

| Good riddance to Ma Bell! I had the runaround with AT&T's DSL service. Those famous 'cards' kept blowing up, and they were constantly replacing them at one place I lived.
I will give them a plus, they did replace a DSL modem free of cost. Once I I had to call on Christmas Eve, and they couldn't help me because my old Alcatel modem was no longer supported. Luckily the rep had it sent out free with a 'Merry Christmas' attached to it. Needless to say my old Alcatel was fine and it was a problem with the card where the DSL tied to the line. I wouldn't have been able to report the problem for repair without getting a new modem. So I just happened to get lucky!
I'm back on cable myself after being put out with the slow speeds of DSL. I'm staying here until AT&T launces "U-verse" here and I get word with neighbors on how it performs.
Until then, good riddance to Ma Bell. She's getting old anyway. Someone needs to get her up out of that rocking chair and into the 21st century!

My dad ordered 1.5 Mbps dsl service along with phone service. They shipped the modem in just a few days. Set up the modem with no problems. After installing the modem we got internet access with no trouble. Then the problems started. Whenever sent or received a call the modem would unsync, or even at times without any phone call at all. Check the filters, all of them were installed. Changed out the phones for a newer type that the technician said would help. They didn't help. So after 10 months they figure out the problem is the defective modem that they sent my dad, because it took them so long to figure out the modem was bad the warranty on it had expired so they wanted to charge my dad $75 to replace the one they sent him. No thank you. When my dad's contract expires we will be switching to cable internet.
UPDATE: A friend gave us their old modem and that fixed the problem (mostly). A lot better than before. There is still the occasional random unsyncing but nowhere near as common as it was.
UPDATE 04/10/09: The old modem is starting to have problems like the original modem, tech support is still useless on this subject. Now if Windstream would come out to Louisville with FTTH like they are in Lexington I'd be pretty damn happy.
UPDATE 08/26/09: Finally got the sync issues fixed, the filter in the NID had gone bad apparently, now there are no unsnycing issues. Also U-Verse just came to Louisville today, not available at my home yet, but it is over at a few relatives. Will be doing the happy dance when they expand out to here (hopefully soon since they have a VRAD already installed nearby).

I have 6.0 extreme. Is runs about 5 mbps at best, and I am under a mile from the LSO with low line noise. It is reliable, with the exception of lightning hits. It comes in the phone lines (yes, they are grounded and on suppressors). and I have just learned to unplug when lightning is near. Cable is not available here. I am moving soon to a location where Comcast is a competitor, so we will compare prices/features/speeds and then decide on our new ISP. Tech people are not very knowledgeable. the field guys use to be on the ball, but the new ones are dull as bowling balls. Example... I wanted to bridge an old westell modem and use one of my Linksys routers, and AT&T got so messed up with THAT issue that they just sent a 2wire gateway out (piece of junk BTW). Not bad overall, and if you are use to dial up, then it is the best thing since sliced bread. If you are use to cable, it is a step down.
