I was one of the first to sign up for Myeastern when Eastern Connecticut Cable brought it's customers broadband after the demise of @Home. Installation was a breeze and it's been working wonderfully since day 1. Top notch tech support and very timely info provided to it's customers via a forum for Myeastern users. My connection has always been very consistant. My only complaint may be that it costs more than DSL and the upload speeds are a bit on the low side.
UPDATE: Since the increase in speed my complaint is no longer applicable. Upload speed is now close to advertised 256. Download speed is now an incredible 2500. Nice job Eastern Connecticut Cable.

I am happy so far, but I did not notice much of a change since they sent out a notice that our speed is suppose to be 3x faster? It is expensive, I think for the amount of time I use it, We don't get to access email from a remote location, only from my computer using outlook express. does anyone know why? Don't most ISPs give you a way to access your email from a remote location. they tell me to use mail2net or something like that?, and it never works?! Downloads are definately much faster than land line. I did a test using linelink and the resuslts are 1290 kbps download and 245 kbps upload.

"Cant really say....changes soo much!"

I live in Northwood, NH and have had Metrocast for about 3 years. I clearly remember the day i first got it....i was 15 and couldnt believe i would finally have cable access in the home. It was actually December 21st (first day i was on school vacation) when the guy came out; cable-internet was a gift from my dad. The tech showed up and we had already ran the cable line from the basement to our ccomputer room, so all he had to do was install the "Line-Tap" and i believe he went out to the pole to switch someting because our line all of sudden went out and then came back on...I believe he was removing a filter.
Over the years, I have been somewhat satifisied with the service...and for me...i noticed in the beginning the service would drop out for maybe 30 mins at a time and then the internet would be enabled again. Doesnt seem to happen as often now since Metrocast upgraded it's system. I was able to determine i just needed a "Signal Booster" and was able to get a power level to my SB 4100 modem of 11 dBmV. I had originally about 1dBmV so i think it helped a little bit. Speeds for me in the area always seem to stay below the 512 mark but always above 400 for download and about 78-90 for upload speed. Slow in my opinion but like many people in the area here...it's better then AOL.
Last night....I came onto DSL reports and did my usual weekly speed test. I got the same old 472/78 connection i usually have. After i submitted my speed result....i saw what other people on the domain www.metrocast.net where getting and i just about fainted...i was seeing speed's above 1.0Mbps! downstream!!!. I couldnt believe it...last time i saw those speeds was last year when people were able to uncap their modems on Metrocast's old system...i knew that after they changed their equipment..it was virtually impossible and very traceable upon their behalf. I was like "what the heck is going on?"...so i messaged all the people who had names on here and politely asked them how they were able to achieve such high speeds on Metrocast's sluggish network. I then got curious and just decided to reset and powercycle my modem......When it logged back on....i went right here and did a speed test!...i was blow away...i got like 1.3Mbps/145kbps from New Jersey!!...at first i didnt believe it....so i did it again 4 more times and it came within that range.
I checked today and it's still around that speed so i hope what i'am seeing is true....they changed their speeds indefinetly and that this isnt one of their "bait and catch" deals where they "wet our lips with something to get us to pay for more it!". Customers have waited so long with speeds like this from Metrocast without the $500.00 a month price tag for their "Enterprise Connection" of 1.5/1.5.
If Metrocast keeps this up....it can only make things better for them....they need it!

When I first signed up, all was well. The installation was more or less on time and fairly smooth (though I didn't like having 2 people come in my house and poke around on my computer, especially since they didn't seem sure about what they were doing). I have Directv and only have cable for 'broadcast basics.' At the time, this counted as 'having cable tv.' I bought my own modem, so I got a $5/month discount. Speed at first was incredible, 3500/128! I was in heaven. After 1-2 weeks, they capped it down to the advertised 512/128. After a month or 2, they stopped offering binary newsgroups. After 6 months, they decide that 'broadcast basics' doesn't qualify as 'having cable tv' and they give us notice that the bill will be going up $10/month.When we called to question/complain about this and after much 'but you've been getting a $10 discount all along', we were told someone would contact us to handle our complaint. No one ever did. Bye bye MetrocastOnline, back to DSL for me.

I would like to write a poor review as well. I have good luck with customer service- however- the system is frequently down- and much slower that broadband in other areas. I live in the Rochester service area.
The price is 39.99 per month plus the "cable lifeline" fee of $10.00. That 10.00 in cable channels is being done away with and I will be required to purchase their minimum $44.00 programming package in order to keep my internet connection. So I would be paying $94.00 for a standard broadband connection!!! I do not get cable TV and this is meant to force me. So the Company in general is NOT consumer friendly. I must have CABLE TV in order to use their broadband service!

*ISP review for Metrocast Online* I Live in Meredith NH and use Metrocast Online for Cable internet. I pay $40/per month for 512 download and 128 upload with a dynamic IP. I give them a poor rating for a few reasons, but mostly their customer service. For a few months I was offline for at least a few hours every day! This obviously made me very mad so I called them numerous times and no one ever knew what they were talking about and they just really didn't give me the time of day. I couldn't even get anyone to come out a check out my connection most of the time. This was expecially disturbing because my whole road was having the same problems. Our whole road finially petitioned and got them to come out and test the lines, sure enough, they had flaws and were what was causing the problems. They replaced the lines and now I don't have problems nearly as often. When the service is online, it is moderate, tests and everything prove that it isn't anything special. It just runs a little bit under the "said to be" speeds. I would love to change ISP's but Metrocast is the only available broadband provider in my area!

MyEastern has been great since I signed on! Sign on was just as easy as setting up any online account, since it is a self-subscription program. Once you have a cable modem(see below) sign on takes less than 5 minutes. This is one of the few well rounded ISP's still around. Recently I had connection problems, and a tech was sent out ASAP. Low latency connections, not very many users on a big (DS3) pipe. Tiered service (ability to adjust caps) should be coming.
UPDATE
Web Space is here, with 15mb per account. Unfortunatly, is is a bare Apache server, with no PHP of ASP support. News service is among the best of any ISP, outsourced to 4 servers, with over 110,000 groups at 60 day retention, including binaries. Public gaming servers are also availible, at no additional cost.
/UPDATE
Email is already up and running, with 5 addresses per account. A separate forum just for MyEastern's users is availible as well, at www.connforum.com . This forum was setup and is run by a MyEastern user. Currently, all users get a static IP, and the service is tied to the MAC address used at sign-on. It is very easy to have the mac address updated, just post at ConnForum, or give tech support a call.
If are about to buy a cable modem for this service, the Motorola SB4100 is highly recommended, and can be purchased from MyEastern. You can connect it yourself for free, or pay $75 to have it installed. The $75 installation includes a new cable outlet, new cabling, line work, and a NIC. It does not include the cable modem, which can be purchased separately, or from the MyEastern installer ($140).A technician will show up at your house for the $75 install to install all of this.
For the free self-install, you will need to install wiring, purchase a cable modem and NIC, and configure all of it yourself. A technician *does not* visit your house for self-install. A self-install kit can be purchased from MyEastern, for about $140. Self install is cheaper, but less reliable, and you need to know what you are doing.
I have worked with several different broadband connections/companies across New England for various clients, and MyEastern is far more reliable than other ISP's(including DSL) and the service is the best I have seen in an ISP. If you are even thinking about broadband, go with MyEastern. It is cheaper than DSL, and MUCH better than SNET DSL. Satellite connections cannot even compare to MyEastern. It is just as good as having a T1, at a fraction of the price.
