I've been a customer for six years. Off and on good and bad service. There were 18 months in 2005 and 2006 after the local company was bought by Metrocast that were absolutely horrible. Internet service (and cable) would be out for days at a time for no apparent reason. It's been really good since then until recently, where sub-mbps has become the norm.
I have the 6mbps/384kbps package. I have my own equipment (Linksys modem and router).
Phone support techs don't seem to be technical people (imagine). Lots of script reading (that usually ends up with rolling a truck).
Price is for internet only. My combined cable/internet bill is about $110 a month.
No DSL/FIOS where I live.

WARNING I USED TO WORK FOR THIS COMPANY!
Edit 5/29/08
I just moved away but my Internet service always worked perfectly!
Edit 9/3/06
We have been purchased by another cable company and are now MetroCast Communications of Connecticut. It is still all the same people but we now have the backing of a larger company, we will still offer the same small town service but with more advanced technology. We now offer various speeds of Internet service, from dial-up replacements to full blown Business level services. The system will be undergoing a full plant upgrade which will enable more reliable service, faster Internet, Telephony, more channels, VOD and more HD. The most noticeable change was the upgrade from 3000/256 to 4000/384 for "standard" subscribers. This packages is now called "MetroCast Internet" and is our flagship product.
Edit 2/27/05
New tiers have been added, offering faster speeds, static ip's and allowing servers.
Edit 8/18/04
Speed has been increased from 2500/256 to 3000/256.
Edit 3/15/04
Speed has increased from 1500/128 to 2500/256
Original review 8/24/03
the package is a 1500/128 for $38.95. this includes 5 email boxes with 20mb storage each and a ~20mb attachment size limit.
I installed it myself the day I moved out of the comcast franchise. took me all of 5 minutes after the cable work had been done. Speeds are 1500/128 with these speeds being rock solid. No matter what time of day, nor what day of year the modem hits the cap every time.

I have repeatedly had to suffer the two hours it takes for a tech support person to figure out that I wasn't lying when I called. The cable to the house has been defective for a week. When they scheduled someone to come out after I have been without internet for a week, the tech failed to show or call and advise he wouldn't be able to show. A phone call on the subject issue got me disconnected after 50 minutes and still no help.
All this breaks my heart as, until the last year, service has been great. Saddly, as soon as I get another option, I will take it. At this point, I can't imagine it will get worse elsewhere.

I've been a Metrocast Customer since the company they bought out first offered Internet Service. (Eastern Connecticut Cable). I have been very happy with their internet speeds and reliability over the past few years. Fast downloads, moderate uploads, and a good newsgroup service. I had a few brief issues with my modem when I first signed up for service, but after they replaced the modem with a new one the speeds and reliability went back up. I'm VERY happy with the internet.
Television wise, they aren't horrible but they aren't exactly King of the Hill. I have had some issues with their new "service" where channels I should have been receiving were showing up as "Not Authorized". It took a few phone calls and some help from employees here on the forums in order to get that corrected. It's an issue that never should have existed in the first place, but at least it did get fixed.
Still, their internet service is good and I am happy for that. If only their TV service could match.

What other options did you consider for broadband Had Verizon, glad they are gone
What SPEED/package did you order, at what monthly price? 6/384 plus TV and Voip service for 142.00month with 2 boxes
How was the order & install process? Quick and to the point
What brand/model was the supplied equipment Modem is an ARRIS- Cable boxes Motorola
Cable isnt as clear as Direct TV. 300 dollars in vouchers for Direct TV buy back and 100 for DSL buy back. Never received the 100. Was able to use the entire 300 for one payment. They still dont have my billing cleared up. Three times I called and they were supposed to call me within the hour- nobody responded. I was about to kick them to go back to Direct TV they gave us free HBO and Stars as well as court TV which my wife watches. Newsgroups capped at 2megs down.
Overall- Its an improvement over verizon.Billing I simply dont pay till they give me a number that makes sense. Their tech support peeps care. The office peeps could do better.
UPDATE 3/27/08 Still cant complain about the Internet. Plus you get support here in the forum. TV though is another issue- 7/8 months of incorrect billing, they would fix it after a few phone calls it became tiresome and a time consuming monthly headache.Especially when I would do the math pay what I owe and they would shut me off until they realized I didnt actually owe them. The final straw was the mysterious porn charge that showed up one day, apparently me and the family sat down on a Sunday and watched it- or at least ordered it, not likely it could have been ordered by mistake as we use a code for all ppv programs. They refused to remove it from the bill, I refuse to deal with it any longer. Voip service was fine, but if you are not getting it with bundle its over priced for my taste in the era of mobile communications. Nice to deal with local people, to bad they cant add.

Rock solid, fast and reliable until recent area upgrade. Now multiple daily outages; some lasting hours.
Had two different technicians out & modem replaced, cable connectors replaced but failures continue. Another service call scheduled for tomorrow.
Technicians are polite & well mannered and appear to be knowledgeable. Unfortunately the problem is both intermittent and not in the equipment sited at my end. Why the company keeps sending people to my house is a complete mystery to me. They need to continually log this connection and redirect a crew when it fails. I went through this before on the initial installation 4 years ago.
They appear to have failed to set up a log server and have not implemented the Privacy features on my modem (Motorola 5120).
I really miss their previously outstanding service and reliability level. I may try the AT&T dsl service if this keeps up.
Speed down is usually around 5.4 to 6 Mbs while up it is only in the 356-370 range. Although when it starts to fail the speed down falls to 128K or less.

The broadband experience here in Connecticut has been positive, primarily because of the experience and commitment of the internet tech support people. The tech's are responsive and accessible. Take a quick look at the Metrocast Communications forum on this site to get a feel for the wide variance in customer satisfaction in the geographical regions served by Metrocast. The Connecticut region is heads above the others in service and satisfaction. It is hoped that the core business unit which was acquired from Myeastern a few years ago will maintain its resiliance to the corporate culture Metrocast brings to this market.
I have had no experience with Metrocast regarding initial ordering/ installation of service.
Unfortunately, the only alternative in this area to cable broadband is AT&T DSL.(The price is right, but you are getting dsl.)

I require a high speed internet connection. Metrocast is the ONLY source in my area, Barrington, NH.
They suck. Their website advertises 6000Kbps ul. I haven't seen close to that in over 5 years. Mostly I get around 2900-3000Kbps. False advertising if there ever was.
Tech support stinks: unplug modem, restart this, reboot that. SOS with no results. Service guys come to the house and pat me on the head. Excuses, excuses....
You'd think by 2008 they'd get beyond tin cans and string.
And this tenpin784 guy that monitors these pages is no better. SOS. Nothing ever gets done. They have serious internet connection speed problems. Cheap bastids.
Feh.
WorkingStiff
Modem is Motorola SB5101.

I've had DSL for years. Switched to cable a little over a year ago and have been complaining of slow speed since installed.
Techs have been out several times and I've gotten every excuse in the book and even told that DSL Reports have been proven to give wrong speed test. However, speed test or no speed test, if it takes 5 minutes for even Google to load, Pretty safe to say you're connection sucks. Plus, also has similar result with other speed tests available.
This service is horrible and unreliable. I don't even have the basic package and have complained several times a day (along with speed tech support asked for). it's been over a year an yet to be resolved.
Told it could be the modem. Nope change that out. .
Said it could be the connectors. Last tech couldn't even get a tone on line with his equipment.
Also told it could be that the lines might not be 6 quad.
Charging quite a bit for so many variables, wouldn't you say?

"Horrible speed, both with the HSD product and customer service"

First, let me start by saying I'm a former Comcast employee. In the past 7 years, I've had:
- Comcast's Triple Play (good service overall, although when there were issues customer support was atrocious.. even when I was an active employee!)
- Verizon FiOS (the absolute best - completely reliable, the most bandwidth by far, and the best customer support)
- Metrocast (absolutely atrocious on all fronts)
I've moved to an area where unfortunately, I'm hostage to only one HSD provider: Metrocast (Verizon, please save us!). Now my very first experience with them of course was to call them up to subscribe to their HD service. Thirty-five minute wait time, and this was in the late morning hours during the business week... not exactly peak usage time. I questioned the support rep on the wait, and was basically given the run-around, which I expected.
I've used multiple speed-tests this morning to verify, reset my modem, but it is clearly something on their network, either in the head-end or possibly the plant... I'm getting download speeds ranging from 60kbps to 120kbps! This is for a supposed 6 meg download service speed. Issues occur, and that's fine. But resolving them in a timely manner, and refunding customers when the provider doesn't provide the service that was agreed to is another story.
I'm currently on hold with Metrocast technical support... it's the automated system, telling me it's a 32-minute wait. I'm hoping that it's just other customers with the same issue as me tying up the lines, but I doubt it... this is S.O.P. for Metrocast in my experience with them so far.
I've had it with this company, and the fact that there's no alternative other than back to stone-age dialup. What are my options? A petition by similarly unhappy Metrocast customers in my community, to take forward to my local government? Will they do anything about it? I doubt it, but it still might need to be done.
