This is the worst customer service I have encountered. My installation has
been scheduled for weeks and was to occur between 10:00 AM and 12:00 Noon.
After taking the morning off work then driving to my office to get the service
order records at 1:00 PM, I was told the technician would be at my residence
at 1:30 PM so I returned to await his arrival. At 2:00 PM, I started
calling again. After two "disconnects" while on hold and questions like
"didn't he call you? ", I finally received a call from the "technician"
saying he will arrive around 3:00 PM. He said, "I got held up on another
job." When he arrived he could not open the service pedestal for lack of the proper tool. Two hours later, the service was finally up. Apparently these people have very limited access to a phone and/or
total disregard for customer service.

I got their combination digital TV and cable internet. In my most recent dslreports speed tests from last week, I was only getting DSL speeds, with 700k download and 1mb upload. My pingplotter logs have shown occasional terrible dropouts, sometimes approaching 50% where the internet becomes pretty much unusable. The dropouts are not occurring locally and my pingplotter results to my local router and cable modem and the neighborhood router are fine, but the dropouts are occurring upstream from the router that is handling my local cable modem. This has gotten worse and worse lately to the point I cannot tolerate anymore. Of course, no tech support will recognize my pingplotter results and will not seem to even offer to ping my modem. I am fed up with WoW and will leave them as soon as I have identified a better more reliable connection, hopefully before the end of the week. Yesterday, my connection (and according to WoW, much of Illinois) was down for both internet and TV, from about 11:30am to 3am the next morning. Yes, great service, like they tout in all their commercials. They should spend more money paying competent techs and less on their constant commercials.

Background:

We moved into WOW territory in July 2011. We had been Dish customers for a number of years, and had been getting by on their 2-tuner DVR 625 without too much complaint (we only had two tvs at the time). Our kids are getting older now (boy age 8 and identical twin girls age 6), so demands for recording were increasing. I knew I wanted a whole-house solution, but Uverse wasn't available yet in my area, so that left Time Warner since WOW didn't have a whole-home option at that time.I went with WOW for internet and phone, but TW for TV since I wanted the whole-house system. We have three main tvs: Family Room (32" SD non-digital), Master Bedroom (32" HD LED/LCD) and basement Home Theater (110" HD projection system with surround sound and 2 rows of theater seating). I also had them put a digital-only box for basic cable in our guest room.

Installation:

We were scheduled between 11am and 3pm. At 10 minutes before noon the phone rang and an automated attendant said the installer would be arriving at 12:10pm. The installer arrived almost exactly at 12:10 and I showed him around to the three main TVs that were getting the Ultra TV. He went out to the truck to get the equipment, and while he was out there two more trucks pull up and eventually we have 4 guys running around the house! They were all pleasant and professional, and I gathered from chatting with them that two of them had installed it before and the other two were there to help/learn. I had intended to show them what I wanted and then head to work, but with 4 guys in the house at once I stayed until they were done since my wife was tending to a sick kid. They had some minor changes to make to get the media gateway set up in the basement and make the connections, then hooked up the media player boxes at the TVs. The seemed to enjoy ESPN on my home theater.

Initially I was not receiving any of my premium channels, and they called in and that was ironed out before they left. Then they went to my main PC to set up the wireless. My home is hard-wired for gigabit ethernet in most places, but I do have a number of wireless devices (two Android phones, a Wii, wife's laptop in the kitchen, my work laptop). The installer set up the wireless to my specifications, but didn't provide me the password to the router, the IP address, or anything else. When I asked about changing the password on the wireless, he indicated the login information and password were in the book he left. That wasn't the case, and I had to call customer service later that evening to get the password reset and then set a new one. I can now log into the router and manage the wireless. The installer did an overview of features and use of the TV with me before leaving (but I had already watched all the online tutorial videos, so I was itchng to play with it myself).

Initial Thoughts & Experiences:

TV: The picture is amazing. Wife says she doesn't notice a difference, but I believe the HD is just a bit sharper on both my home theater and the HD tv in our bedroom compared to what we got from TW. I have found the guide/menu to generally be pretty responsive, although there is an occasional lag when you hit a button on the remote. It is more responsive than TW was, but there is an occasional delay (1 to 2 seconds - just enough to make you wonder if it registered or not). It seems the "click" sound for button pushes doesn't happen for every button, which can make the delay more confusing.

We are getting used to the menu system. Wife doesn't like change and definitely didn't like it at first (although she hated TW's guide). As she gets used to it I haven't heard any complaints. The grid option is nice when you want that old, familiar guide, but the channel numbers/names are pretty small, so much so that you can only read them on the home theater downstairs. I definitely like the new menu when I'm looking for a movie or just want to see HD programming since you can get it all at once, but it's kind of a pain for things that are ending soon. To explain further, if you pick the HD menu it brings up what's currently playing on all the HD channels in a list, including the remaining time for the show currently playing. For the selection that has the focus, you get additional information on the right, along with shows that are coming up next. You can only see that for the channel that has focus, so if you are sitting there at 7:55 and a lot of movies start at 8:00pm, you need to go channel by channel to see what those, or change the time slot you are viewing to the 8:00 pm slot. With the grid it's just there without thinking. I think both the menu and the grid style guide have their positives and negatives, so I'm not ready to make a judgement yet. I think we'll just need to play with it more to get used to it.

And while I'm on tv, maybe I don't get it, but I really don't like the way the channel line up is organized. I get what they've done with the numbering, but with all the HD's in the 200's and the SD's in the 100's and 300's, things seem really mixed up. Now this is partially my fault, since I went in and blocked all the SD channels for networks that had an HD feed. This was partially for the wife, as she really hated the fact that on TW some channels showed up three times in the guide [like HGTV - once for analog (#47), once for digital (#150) and once for HD (#1150)]. So now I have things set so each channel shows up only once, but because of that things seem to be spread around a bit (e.g. Nick Jr & Teen Nick have no HD, so they shows up on 325 & 326, but Nick has HD so it's on 258 with a bunch of stuff in between). I know I can go to the Kids menu and just see kids stuff, but it would be nice to still get the HD and non-HD stuff grouped together by network type. I've played around with the favorites and am going to finish setting that up for my wife. I'm hoping that will work better for her. I think it mostly bugs me when I look at the "TV" menu that shows everything, and things aren't grouped together the way I'd like or expect them to be.

We are still sorting through the VOD stuff. Initially everthing we pulled up had a rental on it. After a while we found the free stuff we were used to having with TW. I'm hoping the ABC thing will sort itself out soon, as my son LOVES wipeout. I've seen complaints from others about WOW's VOD selection not being that robust, but it "feels" like there is more here than we had with TW. Maybe we missed something with TW, but we've been pleased with the selection thus far.

Phone: We already had phone from WOW, so nothing really new to report here. One thing I've noticed is the thing seems to think there are two phone lines active even though we are only supposed to have one. Both lights are illuminated on the front of the main box, and I thought I saw something in the menu that indicated two lines active, too. I haven't played with that yet to see if there really are two lines active or not.

Internet: We were on the 8gbps tier that has been eliminated, so we are now on the 15gbps tier. We have been rock-solid with the old modem and the new one, and I've seen 15+mbps speed tests consistently since it went in. As I noted above, I had to call customer service to get the password on the gateway reset to I could get in. Now that I've been in and looked around, it seems to have most of the basic things you'd expect. The gateway ip is 192.168.0.1, and DHCP passes out addresses from 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.254. This was nice as I have two pieces of equipment on my network that require a static IP (a file server and a printer) which I put in between the .1 and the .10. This is one of the reasons I needed to get into the router to see information - I wasn't told what the gateway or IP ranges were by the installer and couldn't reach the printer or file server after the installer left. They are working fine once I switched them to the new gateway after the installer left.

Wireless signal strenth has been ok, but not as strong a signal as my old Netgear WNDR3700. That being said, the media gateway is in the basement in a really bad location (same as the Netgear router was) - on a shelf right underneath a steel support beam at one end of the house. While I can get a signal just about everywhere in the house, at the far end of the house my neighbors wifi signal is stronger than mine on every floor. I have to decide if I want to: a) Move the gateway up to my office on the first floor, or b) configure the Netgear as an access point only (e.g. disable DHCP) and hook it up to the switch in my office. If I go with "b" I might turn the wireless radio in the WOW box down off since nothing in the basement uses wireless. I will need to play around a bit and see what works. Also, the light on the front panel that is supposed to indicate the wireless is active never actually lights up (so the 2nd phone line I'm not supposed to have IS lit up, but the wireless I DO have is NOT lit up - strange, but everything is working).

VPN to my office has worked fine, but we use Cicso software than uses SSL, and I believe the problem some others have had was with a different incarnation of VPN (this is not my area of expertise at all).

Other Thoughts/Conclusion:

At one point I accidentally closed the browser while I was logged into the router. When I later opened the browser I was already logged in, but couldn't actually see anything (the pages came up, but where the information about the settings would normally show never appeared). I tried logging out, but it never got this situation resolved, and shortly after trying to log out I started having problems with my internet/network. I reset the box and all has been fine since then.

Like others have reported in the forum, I had to play around a bit to get the WOW website working so I could program the DVR from there. Some clicking around eventually got it working, and I can report that the website generally works well with my iPad. I haven't tried it on my Android phone yet, but given the small screen I think that would probably only be used as a last resort. I would LOVE to see a dedicated iOS and Android app in the future. TW had this, and it was great to be able to set the DVR for something when we weren't at home.

My older (5 years - ancient!) RF remote for my home theater did not have a code that would run the media player at all, so I had to learn every button one at a time. It only took about 15 minutes. So far the only problem I'm having there is that when I push the direction buttons in the menu the menu often moves two ticks instead of one (so it will skip right over a show). I will need to see if there is a way to fix this when I call the remote control's support line.

All in all I am pretty satisfied. Given the newness of the product, I am fairly impressed. I had been expecting lots of bugs and had warned my wife that was the price we'd pay for six tuners. I have been pleasantly surprised in this regard. As I noted above, wife is still getting used to the menu/guide. I am liking it as I play with it more. At this point I think I would like it better if it was a combination of the grid style and the menu guide: a grid-stlye guide where the line that has focus gets bigger (easier to read) and provides more details on that actual line instead of a window up above). I will see how things go as we use it more and look for tips/tricks to get more out of it.

I would advise folks to definitely watch all the videos and read the instruction book. I played with things an entire day before I figured out you could push "zoom" button to make the menu go away (doh!).

All in all we are very pleased.

I've had the cable/phone/internet package for a few years now and have had very reliable service. Just recently contacted customer service and was able to upgrade internet service for just about the same price that I was paying previously. Their customer service people are the greatest!!

Why I changed:

So I've had U-Verse for just little over a year and really like the service except the cost. So, looking at other alternatives to saving money, I decided to go the Cable Router knowing that any cable ready TV can just be plugged right in without having to pay for additional Set Top Boxes. Also, I have the ability to use other DVR services (TiVo) in replace of Cable's DVR's if I wanted more flexibility with how I record and watch shows (With UVerse you can only use their boxes, locked down and with Video To Go, you have to use ATT's Phone with their app).

Package I Got:

WOW Digital Value

XCite 2MB Internet (Upgraded to 8MB)

1 free M Cable Card (M-Card)

Installation Requirements:

1. Activate/Install new Line from Node to House for service.

2. QTY 1 M-Card (Multi Switch Cable Card) to use with my TiVo Premier Box.

3. Install 3 cable connections to 3 different TV's.

4. Setup Cable Modem (Pre-Owned, will get to this later).

12/27/2010 (Original Install Date)

Installer showed up on time. First thing he did was look throughout the house to make sure everything looks good and if there is anything he needed to do extra. First pass through everything looked good. All cabling within the house was great so he didn't need to re-run cables outside the house to each room. He also didn't have to run a new line from the Node to the House. He said everything was in good condition and had no sync/speed problems. First thing he did was connect all the TV's to the Cable and tested each one (except the TiVo) to make sure they are receiving all the channels per the package I got (except for the Premium HD channels because we didn't have a Set Top Box).

Next he plugged the cable into the TiVo box. BTW, I'm glad I setup the TiVo box a day before because it tool like 2 hours to run through updates and the Guided Setup for OTA (Initially). Once the cable was installed he grabbed one of the two cards be brought with him and installed it into the TiVo Cable Card slot. From there, we ran into a few problems. The Cable Card I specified when setting up the install was an M-Card and the Tech brought two S-Cards which do not work with this TiVo box. So, he quickly called another tech and was able to get someone to come out later and install the M-Card. So while we couldn't do anything more on the TiVo box, he wanted to start working on the internet.

When the Tech activated the SB5101 Cable Modem everything seemed to be working as it should. Speed tests were a little slow at first but got better after a few minutes. Then when I was doing the registering online for a new account the internet stopped working. So, we reset the cable modem again and still nothing. So the tech insisted on giving me a Cable Modem from WOW (He had 2 in the truck just for these cases). When he activated the first one, nothing happened. Still the same issue as my Owned box. So he activated another one and things seems to be working OK. Speeds were .5MB Down and .3MB Up which I should have gotten 2MB Down and 1MB Up. So after doing some more tests with the cable modem things started getting a little better.

When the Cable Modem install was done, we walked to each room verifying that every TV (except TiVo) is getting a good Digital Signal and everything was. When the tech was ready to leave, he said the other guy should be @ my house within a hour. When he stepped out the front door, the other guy just pulled into the Drive Way (This was FAST!). So they both came back in and installed the M-Card (which the TiVo saw) and activated it. From there I was able to do some see all Digial HD channels. Once the guided setup was done and we can see everything including the Guide for WOW Digital Package the Install was considered done. The Install techs were really nice and helpful. Fast too in response to an issue about the M-Card as well.

12/28/2010

So, the Cable TV has been working great. Haven't been able to schedule and Season Passes because no new TV shows were coming on this week. But everything has been working great for TV.

The Internet however has been having a lot of issues. Biggest one has been the constant drop in connection between my computer and the gateway (IP WOW uses to gain Internet Access). Using simple ping my loss percent was 17 or higher which is not good. So thinking this it might be WOW's cable modem, I went ahead and added my SB5101 cable modem back on and things started looking good but not great. So I let that sit for a day before I test anything else.

12/29/2010

So, Internet again started having problem. Dropped connection to really slow speeds. Thinking that my problem again in the SB5101 cable modem, I went ahead and bought a new SB2160 cable modem (many people on dslreports.com reported and being the best to get and is supported by WOW). So, I activate another cable modem (WOW probably thinking I'm crazy or something). Speeds started improving a lot and getting really good connection. So decided to wait a day before I can say issue is fixed.

12/30/2010

Internet started dropping again. This time I didn't know what to do except call WOW for support. When talking to the CSR, He noticed that there have been some issues in my area and a Tech was being dispatched to troubleshoot the issue. So, maybe my problem was that. So we decided to wait a day and see what happens next.

12/31/2010

Continued having issues on my Connection. TV Service has still be Rock Solid. So being New Year's Eve I decided to just wait until Monday to try and figure out what the issues might be. Good thing I still had U-Verse Internet running in Parallel just for this case.

01/03/2011

Called WOW Support because of the same Internet Issues as before. Again they said that there are problems within the area and are sending another Dispatch Tech to take a look Wednesday. But in the mean time, we decided to have a Tech come out Thursday and take a look.

01/04/2011

Received a phone call from one of the two installers that installed my stuff last Monday. He said he wanted to resolve this issue and get me working on the Internet. So, being that I only work 10 Min away from home, so we were able to get together @ my house for him to figure out the problem. Very happy when someone called me Tuesday expecting someone to come out Thursday. The installer came in and tested the cable line to the modem and noticed that there was no signal. Now this is the same line the U-Verse had installed and was OK to use by the First installer. So after replacing that he setup my old SB5101 modem back up and activated it. From that point we were seeing a SOLID connection with speed tests matching what I should be getting. So we figured that everything was GOOD.

Later that night, I started experiencing a lot of Disconnects between my Cable Modem and WOW's Connection. Called the support number the installer gave me earlier and I talked to a friendly tech which wanted to really get me working on the Internet. He did see a note that WOW's Techs were coming out Midnight 01/05/2011 to do some work since some people in my area were reporting issues with the Internet.

01/05/2011

In the afternoon, my connection was rock solid. No hiccups or speed slow downs.

Later that night, I was getting the same issues as before. I called the Tech again from Yesterday and he was planning to come to my house Thursday to install a new Modem. Really, with talking to this guys and all tech's they are trying their hardest to get things working the right way.

01/06/2011

The tech showed up and was seeing the issues that I was having. So, he decided to replace the Cable Modem with WOW's Modem to see what the results would be. He also said if I were to experience anymore issues with WOW's modem that WOW's Network guys and troubleshoot better that with the pre-owned ones I have. After replacing the modem, things starting looking really good. Connection was solid, no dropped packets. But, as usual, the issues do not show up until that night. So being a nice guy, he game me his cell phone number and said if there were any other issues that may come up tonight that I should just call him and he would conference the Network Guys @ WOW and we can resolve the issue. Now, he mentioned that my IP may become static as this would fix the bandwidth issue because static has more precedence over the network than dynamic.

So, just as a test for my, I setup a laptop to just do a Ping test to WOW's gateway IP and had that run all day until I got home that night.

When I got home, the Ping command was still running and everything was still solid. No drops, no Loss from the Ping Command and my Internet was showing the speeds I should get. So, it looks like my Internet is now. 2MB wasn't fast enough for me so I decided to upgrade to the 8MB service. Within a few minutes I was able to get the 8MB Down 1 MB Up speeds.

01/07/2011

So far, Internet has been working really good. TV Service has been great since Day 1 of the install. I really appreciate the Tech's who came and troubleshot all the issue and were finally able to get this working for me and my Family.

02/25/2012

Well, it's been a full year and cable and internet have been rock solid for the most part. One little hassle we had to deal with was when the transitioned the signal on the cable from analog to digital, we had to re-scan channels about every week for a good two months on our upstairs (No Cable Box) TV. This was a pain but was still able to see all channels as before.

Yesterday I I just had the WOW Whole Home DVR (Ultra TV) installed. The installation took almost 3 hours. I had two TV's (Upstairs Master and Downstairs Family Room) setup on the Ultra TV.

The reason why I was interested in the Ultra TV is the fact My Wife, Child or I can watch a recorded show in the Master Bedroom so we are not arguing who gets to use the TiVo. TiVo has the ability to stream videos (latest update) from one TiVo box to another, but you have to have a Premier Box and they've recently raised their monthly cost from 12.95 to 19.95 which I could not coupe with. The other reason is the VOD feature on wows cable boxes. I know it's not the greatest but it works. I also have an Apple TV which I can Rent/Purchase videos too as an options.

After the install a couple of things didn't work right away. First all of a sudden the video stopped and reported to me that the Media Gateway (DVR, Phone and Internet box) was not working. So I restarted the gateway which fixed that problem. The other issue I saw was setting up recording. First, it's easy to start a recording or setup a record via the search, grid guid or channel list. However, I didn't see an easy way to manage recordings, see what's coming up and manage my series recordings. This stuff can be done on the Web via the wowway portal but I feel it needs to be available on the DVR as well. Maybe an update is in the works to fix this. Internet speeds are rock solid. WiFi is working fine. I was a little upset the the Technician wouldn't allow me access to the Media Gateway configuration page. I think that is crap expecially if WOW doesn't allow other Routers/Firewalls attached to the gateway.

However, I'm liking the new interface. Reason why I got WOW with TiVo to begin with. Will take a little bit to get used to though. Works well with my Harmony Remote too (which I wasn't sure). I will update more once I've had a few weeks to a month of testing this new Ultra TV out.

I have to give Wow big zero stars. My home burned down on Oct 31. I
called Wow a couple of days later and was reassured that I would not
have to pay for the lost equipment. I got slapped with an 2800 dollar bill
today and was also told "that's too bad " over the phone. And would not even waived bill for month after the fire. I lost everything and 2 of my dogs died and they are screwing me when they said they wouldn't and also , the equipment was about to be replaced with the newer energy efficient equipment . so they want to overcharge me for outdated crap? I hope they all rot in hell . Wow is nothing but a bunch of thieves!!!!!

Duplicate review?

Sorry to hear about your house and two dogs. I think this is a duplicate review, there was a very similar one post about a month ago.

I hate wow cable!!!

I absolutely HATE wow cable. We always have problems. Last week, the cable was out for 6 days before someone came out to change the box. Now, as in right now the cable just decided to freeze and now its been out for at least 45 minutes. I am so sick of this crap. They also have hardly anything on demand. ABC is gone, and there's a lot of channels that aren't even on it. Everything is delayed. I want Comcast back, I will b getting rid of wow ASAP. Comcast is worth the extra $. If ur thinking about switching to wow, DON'T! I promise u will b sorry.

Different for me. I'd do anything to switch away from Comcast. Their shady billing makes me boil.

I had a box go out after a storm. I had the option of waiting a week for an installer or taking it in and swapping it out. I took it in the following morning. Took all of 5 minutes to get in/out and have a new box. Plugged it and it worked find no issues.

My monthly cost includes new HD Ultra TV (whole home DVR) service with 2 TVs connected. 15M internet, HBO, Showtime, Starz.
I can manage my DVR from the internet and record up to 6 shows simultaneously.
WOW allows you to add and remove premium features without charging service fee many other providers do.
Their phone support is phenomenal, almost no hold time. They are very quick about setting up your service. They have had next day service available for my initial cable service and then my upgrade to Ultra TV.
Both technicians were great.
The hardware is Arris. It has an internal 500GB hard drive and I was easily able to install an external 1TB eSata drive.

They are worlds better than AT&T. However, I wish I could get FIOS. Past time warner experience was similar to WOW!. TW had worse support, but was more reliable.

I needed to downgrade my services from Comcast to only include cable TV and internet service. The best rate Comcast could provide was $104 per month. I have too many trees for satellite TV and it doesn't make sense not to bundle cable and internet for the discount. I checked around my area only to find one legitimate choice: Wide Open West (WOW). They are a privately owned company based in Colorado. Definitely the "little guy" compared to Comcast. They were able to offer me Digital Basic Cable (250 channels), 15/1M High Speed Internet cable modem ($5/mo), 2 DTA's,(no charge) 1 cableCARD (for my TiVo unit at no charge) for $75 per month. The woman who took my order (Vicki) was very helpful and was able to offer me discounts where she could. All of this was no contract too.

Installation went smoothly and the tech had to run a new line off the pole. He also installed a dedicated HSI line in addition to the cable. Total install time with 3 TV's was about 2 hours. The cable modem I am renting is the older Scientific Atlanta DOCSIS 2.0 model. The cableCARD is a Cisco Systems

Everything is up and running smoothly. The basic cable package also includes local channels in high definition. Even though I am a new WOW customer, I would recommend it to my Midwest friends. Their value compared to Comcast is superior. The only downside is they don't have a lot of different package choices. For example, if you wanted a faster upload speed on the15/1M HSI, it isn't available unless you jump up the download speed to 30M, which, of course, increases the price too.

If you are in the Midwest and searching for a cable TV alternative to Comcast, check out WOW!

01/28/2012: I replaced the WOW issued Scientific Atlanta cable modem with my own Motorola Surfboard SBV5222. It not only saves me $5/month but has also improved the internet connection.

I have to give WOW! a whopping zero stars. My home caught fire and burned
down on October 31st. I called WOW! a couple of days later and was assured
that I would not have to pay for the equipment that was lost in the fire.
Today I was shocked to receive a $2800 bill. When I called and explained
the situation I was told Thats too bad.I was then informed that they
would not even waive the bill for the month after the fire, when I was
unable to use WOW! I lost everything, including my 2 dogs, and I feel
completely screwed over by WOW! Additionally, the equipment I am expected
to pay an exorbitant amount for was out of date and about to be replaced
with newer, energy efficient equipment. I am outraged that WOW! went back
on their word and how I have been treated in this situation. This
experience has left me with the feeling and knowledge that WOW! is nothing
but a bunch of thieves!!

can NOT tell you that you will NOT have to pay for equipment. At that point you should have disconnected your services. Also with that you're insurance will pay for the equipment. And you agree up front that any unreturned equipment has fees and know what those are up front.

Sorry for your loss but that's how it works.

That's a cable company for ya

WOW could have at least only made you pay what their old crap is ACTUALLY worth.

I guess WOW really isn't better than the other cableco's...

Re: That's a cable company for ya

You signed when your services were installed and you like most others never read anything you sign. But when it turns out to not be in your favor you bash the company when in reality you should bash yourself for being an idiot.

So lets say that I rent some tools from you and before I get them back to you my garage burns down. Your logic would be to say oh thats ok you dont owe me anything since your garage burned down, have a good day!! LOL thats comical, hopefully you can see where wow is coming from, its just simple logic but I do see you live in warrentucky so that might say something about you already.
