We are getting higher mb than what we are paying for. Great service! member for 12.4 years, 158 visits, last login: 11.8 years ago updated 11.9 years ago
First of all a disclaimer - I am a Mediacom field tech. I've had all three services for about 3 years now. I have no complaints. During that time I've had two issues with the internet/phone that were area issues and were fixed within several hours. I have no bandwidth issues and the phone and internet services have been rock solid. I do not watch TV that much and don't really care about it so I can't comment on the TV service quality. 'Value for the money' is based on the employee pricing (most services are heavily discounted or free). 09/19/2009 Not much to update other than a free speed upgrade. Can't complain about that. 04/20/2010 Somewhat slower speed during peak time but no other issues. 10/27/2010 Still no problems. Peak time speeds have improved. 04/05/11 I am aware of some utilization issues in my area however my service is still great. Have the VIP/employee internet that's advertised as 15/1 with web-boost so speedtest will show better speeds. Can't beat this for $5/mo! 10/12/11 No changes. All services working great... --Update 09/2/2011-- No problems lately, solid connection. Great service, highly recommend! --Update 08/23/2010-- No problems lately, solid connection. Great service, highly recommend! --Update 01/26/2010-- No problems lately, solid connection. Great service, highly recommend! --Update 07/22/2009-- No problems lately, solid connection. Great service, highly recommend! --Update 01/16/2009-- No problems lately, solid connection. Great service, highly recommend! --Update 07/08/2008-- No problems lately, solid connection. Great service, highly recommend! --Update 11/27/2007-- No problems lately, solid connection (although I understand that there have been problems out west). Great service, highly recommend! --Update 05/20/2007-- No changes; don't receive full speeds but not surprised. --Update 10/16/06-- As usual an upgrade in upload would be greatly appreciated, 256 is so 2003. But withstanding the low upload speed all is good. --Update 04/07/06-- No problems, I take that back; if you ever want to talk to a real person on the technical support line be ready to stay for a while. Go ahead and fix your self a drink, but besides that no problems. 5000/256 receives around 4500/240 --Update 09/19/05-- Speed is now 5000/256; receive some where in the mid 4000/230 so not too bad. No real problems as of yet, although 384 or 512 would be great for the upload. --Update 03/17/05-- New provisioning system came on line without a single problem on my part, thank you Mediacom. No real big problems to speak of I haven’t lost connection for over a year now, service slows down every now and then but not enough to cause any problems. All in all, I’m happy with Mediacom still; although it could always cost less and dn/ul faster. --Original Review-- Got Mediacom back in May of 2003, never going back to dial up. Installation took about two weeks, why they had to come out I don’t know I had every thing set up about a week before they showed up. The tech had never done an install where the customer supplied there own modem (a Linksys) before, this confused him; never did get the software to work but the connection was up and running before he left. No big problems since then, normally get about 2500 / 230 so I can’t complain. Nick member for 19.6 years, 3386 visits, last login: 4.2 years ago updated 12.5 years ago
We are paying for the 20/2 service and usually get that or more. Some times it fluctuates during the evening and night but never drops down that low or effects anything were doing, a mod/staff even offered to have a tech come out and look at it but I don't think it requires that atm. The price isn't that bad either were getting 10 times the speed we had with our previous provider for just a little more. member for 12.6 years, 29 visits, last login: 11.9 years ago lodged 12.5 years ago
We had AT&T DSL for several years and couldn't get a faster connection from them due to distance. We wanted more bandwidth to stream video and to be able to use Skype. We called and ordered the 12/1mb service with the self-install kit. The kit arrived in three days and we had it set up in less that 1/2 hour. The modem supplied was an RCA DCM425. It ran good for a few days and then started to decay and speeds would fluctuate up and down from 11.5/.95 down to 1.5/.95. We contacted customer support and although it took three tech visits and several communications over a ten day period everything is now repaired and the service works well. The tech support folks were easy to work with and stayed with the problem until they fixed it. We were ready to give up but they convinced us to stick with it until they got it right. member for 12.8 years, 37 visits, last login: 12.1 years ago lodged 12.8 years ago
I had verizon dsl for about 4 years and it was a great company then they sold it to frontier a few months back and it went from great to worse i had a 3mb download and 768 upload and it turned in to a .08 mb download and .2 upload i could not do anything but wait. it was cheaper to go to MEDIACOM for the 20mb down and 2 mb upload could not ask for anything better. only problem was such a long wait to get installed so i did a self install and is working great. member for 18.1 years, 1256 visits, last login: 12.7 years ago lodged 12.9 years ago
Mediacom is the fastest in my area and is pretty reliable member for 13 years, 1530 visits, last login: 187 days ago lodged 12.9 years ago
Have not had any issues that were not wide spread in over two years. Field techs have defiantly improved and are much more knowledgeable. However the phone support is still pretty much useless. member for 18.4 years, 2683 visits, last login: 6.3 years ago updated 13.2 years ago
I have been with Mediacom since they took over from the ATT @home days. So far their service here has been very stable. Only a couple of outages here in the past few years. I pull a steady 18meg down. The only other option here is DSL which is more expensive and has less speed. So I guess I will stick with them until something better comes along! I also have their phone service which is working good for me. I am just waiting for FTTH but I doubt that will ever come up here! member for 19.6 years, 6059 visits, last login: 20 days ago updated 13.4 years ago
New house, new Internet: before we could lock in Verizon's 3 Mbps for 2 years, minimum, at $35.00/month locked in permanently, Frontier took over Verizon. Yes, with its 5 GB/month transfer limit and ~$1/GB overage fees. And we didn't fancy paying $250/month to Frontier for what by all accounts is degraded service to begin with. So we checked with Mediacom. We hadn't even considered them, can't find just-plain-Internet price listed anywhere on their site whereas Verizon had it right on (well, we had to look a bit) theirs. But with Frontier being what it is, nowhere to go but hope Mediacom isn't (as we feared) outrageously expensive. Now, for $50/month, we get 12 Mbps service; we're planning to switch to VOIP. And on three separate occasions, Mediacom techs have assured us (we've been pretty worried, what with the horror stories from Frontier and even Comcast's 250 GB/month transfer limit) that Mediacom does not impose a transfer limit of any kind. We asked before purchasing: July 30 (Friday), ~ 5:06/12 p.m., before committing to contract: * Us: 'Is there a monthly cap on bandwidth?" * Tech: [pause] "What's a ... _cap_?" We explained what we meant, and he answered no, no limit on usage. August 15 (Sunday), ~ 11:20 p.m., after reading news story about Frontier $250/month bills in response to customer overages: * Tech again confirms, no, no cap on quantity of Internet usage. Says closest Mediacom comes to any sort of limit is tracking and identifying torrents (which we don't use anyway). August 21 (Saturday), ~ 2:00? p.m., after Rapidshare.com/.de went down for Mediacom customers only for 6 hours: * Tech confirms, no, Mediacom doesn't block Internet sites. Says no, even massive traffic to site wouldn't cause ban; points out that Mediacom doesn't enforce a traffice limit. As of August 21, we've had Internet exactly 2 weeks, have transferred ~ 500 GB from our online storage. Am reasonably assured that Mediacom indeed does not impose a transfer limit of any type, and am suitably impressed. We're loyal customers now, thanks to this (eminently intelligent) policy. We're finishing setting up our replacement computer now, so winding down use - another ~ 500 GB, and we'll be back up and running. Online storage is a wonderful backup in case of computer crashes like these - we pay for Rapidshare Premium, and it's certainly worth the added security. So far, very pleased. Now let them follow through on three techs' promises (as we believe they will), and we'll be loyal customers for life. (Odd note, though - the reason we had to ask whether a transfer limit was imposed was that Mediacom never bothered to require us to agree to any terms of service. Not on the phone [we agreed only to a recorded verbal contract specifying only that we agreed to such-and-such a rate of early termination fee], not in person during the install [no paperwork at all, just handed them a check], not later. They don't even know our e-mail address, and we've had no mail from them.) Automated call the day before confirming installation window on the following day and offering us a chance to modify it; nice touch (perhaps standard, I don't know, but it was helpful, especially since we requested an installation date of a week from our order date - spent the week betweentime setting up the new computer). Install itself went fine; however, window was 8:00-12:00 a.m., tech didn't arrive until 1:20 p.m. (bad - we might have had somewhere we needed to be) and didn't call to tell us so until 1:00 p.m. Tech was knowledgeable, agreeable, helpful - offered to locate the cable more conveniently to us than if we had used the location used by the previous owners of our house. Set up the modem, our network card wasn't working yet (then not yet quite properly seated - it's touchy), he left with the assurance that it _should_ work. Would have preferred it had he stayed to confirm, but it took half an hour to get the card seated right, and would have hated to have him over the shoulder the entire time. And Internet _was_ available immediately when we got the card settled in right. Tech stopped by a few days later to check in on us, we had no problems, he fiddled with something on the street line hookup and left. Previously, neighbors had installed Mediacom cable, but installation was scheduled during our community fair and horse show (takes over the fairgrounds across the street); Mediacom saw all the fences, carnival workers, vehicles, and barricades and ran a cord a couple hundred feet, from the pole in the corner of our yard across the alley, across the neighbors' (large) yard, to the neighbors' house. When purchasing Internet, asked to have the cord removed and Internet properly (invisibly) installed; we have to move the physical cord when we mow the yard, and every vehicle that drives down our alley driver over the cord every day. Tech said ask install tech; install tech said couldn't fix it then (needed special equipment), said he'd send someone out. Check-up tech didn't do anything, a second tech appeared this week at the neighbors' house, but still a cord stretching across our yard, across the alley, across the neighbors' yard. August 21, about 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Rapidshare.com/.de down, totally unreachable. The rest of the Internet works as normal; computer still running, downloads just all paused; site can't be reached, including after reboot and modem reset. Rapidshare reports as online on (various) sites such as www.downornot.com/rapidshare and downforeveryoneorjustme.com/rapidshare.com, and a friend on Comcast 20 miles away can get it fine. As described above, called tech, who says no, Mediacom doesn't block sites, but he can't get Rapidshare to load, either. He advises we wait, so we do. Just before 7:00, Rapidshare is up again, has remained up since. Other than this, no connection problems prior or since. Sometimes YouTube videos load slower than it seems they ought, but that's very hard to tell and I can't confirm that that is actually the case. RAC Thomson cable modem and ~ 6-foot Ethernet cable supplied. My god, phone techs are good. Maybe it's just the weekend techs, but got three excellent, knowledgeable, _understandable_ techs on a Friday @ 5:00 p.m., Saturday @ ~2:00 p.m., and Sunday @ 11:30 p.m. Phone support this good doesn't actually _exist_ ... Knew the answers, waited on the line while I talked, and initial phone contact (who ultimately handled our initial order) didn't push us to buy extra services (we only take Internet - we don't even own a television, and we're pricing VOIP now); a friend recently took Comcast small business and had to fight off a pushy CSR trying to force every bundle under the sun on him. meg member for 13.5 years, 1 visits, last login: 13.5 years ago updated 13.5 years ago |
