Have been a DSL subscriber for over 5 years, and decided I wanted to try something different. Mediacom has been offering high-speed Internet for about 2 years, and they seem to have delivered on their promises. DSL package was 1.1M down, current Mediacom package is 5M down/256 up and it hits those numbers with ease!
I wasn't overly impressed with the somewhat "generic" Ambit cable modem they supplied, so I purchased my own Motorola Surfboard SB 5120. Works great, and was significantly faster with no other changes made. It's a keeper.
Ordered by phone, appointment for install made for 2 days later. Install tech called me at work and confirmed my time, and I met him as agreed. Took about 30 minutes, had good line quality at the existing jack and I was up and running with no issues. Very satisfied that the order/install process went well, as I felt that may have been a problem area but it proved not to be.
So far so good...more to follow if needed.
UPDATED 08/08 Speed package recently changed to 8Mbps Down, 512Kbps up. Service still very reliable, few outages. Works nicely with son's XBOX 360 for on-line multiplayer use.

I have had mediacom for 8 years. They have increased our speeds twice for free in the last two years, but in the past two years we have suffered more and more signal loss.
So when there is signal the speed is great. But because their service is horrible, they don't make appointments, or they don't fix the problem, it makes the whole experience frustrating.
The signal loss causes interruptions weekly to my phone, internet, and the digital and HD channels.
I will be switching to U-Verse / FIOS when available.

We got Mediacom HSI and Cable for the household back in 2003. Pretty reliable back then and better price.
It seems for the last 2 years now mediacom has gone down the crapper. Around here in Winnebago some of the channels have been broke for a long time. For instance the Sci-fi channel has audio sync issues or low volume. FX can barely be heard on any tv.
The internet is even worse. To give you an idea. The local library here switched its provider from Mediacom to the local Verizon. Since Mediacom keeps having speed issues. And even worse it times out every day nearly.
Speeds are slightly decent. And upload of 60kb a second can't complain. And only can get my 900kb rate at night sorta sucks. During the daytime I may be lucky and average 500kb for a rate. Most of the time its around 160kb.
One thing you should ask yourself about mediacom. Is why does it keep timing out in the evening and during the night?
*Updated 12/30/07
Well it seems my service has gotten much worse on some weeks and some days its fine. For instance a few days after this Ping problems have been persistant constantly every few weeks. Try doing ANYTHING at 800ms. Luckily, December has been much better nearly. Download rates have taken a big dump due to odd timeouts in their own networks.
*Updated 3/20/08 Well things just got WORSE! Now im losing my connection every few minutes during the day. I reset the modem and it comes back in a click. No packet loss, no high pings. Just the connection goes dead. Dropping them soon!
*Updated 8/10/08 After 5 months, the connection during the daytime has increased to almost 8mbps. I can now download a single file at over 750KB/s. It took them sometime to finally get their network here stable. Now their a rock solid provider after a terrible record in late 07.

| Still on "hold" I am tired of being placed on hold for 15 to 20 minutes before I can speak to a customer service representative.
I am also tired of being "forced" to listen to your obnoxious commercials while holding.
I would never consider adding Mediacom internet or phone service. If your attention to your customers is as deplorable in those areas as it is in the cable division why would I do that to myself???
Why don't you call your customer service line sometime and see how annoying your company really is?
The word "DISH" sounds better and better to me all the time.

| Same problem here... I live in Villa Grove, IL and I am having the exact same internet problems you are having. Before I could consistently get over 900kbs but now I am lucky to get 500-600kbps when it is working properly. I have been timing out more and more lately and the internet is almost unusable during the weekend.
I am considering switching to Verizon DSL if things do not get better soon. I believe they only offer about half the download speed I should be getting now but it would be worth the loss to have a reliable connection.

I've had it now for almost 2 years. The advertised speed went from 5000/256 to 8000/512 but my download speed rarely exceeds 5500. I do like the increased upload speed. I have been annoyed with down times ranging from a few minutes to several hours but they have been getting rarer. Overall I have been happy with it.
12/26/2007 - My speed jumped to 6500-6800 which made me happy. I then switched my old 802.11b router with a Linksys WRT54G which allowed consistent 7500/490 speeds.
04/25/2008 - Been running into a lot of slow time. Download speed will drop to 500 - 1500 for a day or two and then jump back up to a normal 7500 - 7600. I was also sent an info pack saying since I have all 3 services (cable, internet, phone) I will get a free upgrade to 10000/1000 but I haven't seen any change yet.
6/27/2008 - Finally got upgraded to 10000/1000. Tested at 9365/945 so that's nice. I've been having a lot of slow time though when I'll be lucky to have 20% of that and it'll last for a couple of days.
7/17/2008 - Went an entire evening of no service but it seems that was due to repairs. Have been getting consistent 9300-9600kbps downloads. Even during high traffic times it doesn't drop below 7500kbps. and that is rare. My upload speeds are always 930-960kbps.
8/09/2008 - Mediacom seems to be testing Web-boost. Uploads are the same but have been getting 14000-18000kbps downloads.

Have had service through mediacom for some time and besides the internet i cannot even stand them.
We have thier phone service and randomly it will just drop the connection, internet and cable will work fine but phones just dead. Pretty bad considering we have a baby and usually dont notice for some time.
Thier cable service is mediocre at best, to even get the HD reciever i CSR wanted a deposit because "the boxes are expensive" I threatened to switch to sattelite and wouldnt ya know all of a sudden she didnt need a deposit. On top of that the HD support is really subpar about 14 HD channels and my locals. If all that was not annoying enough our box randomly shuts off every now and then and when it comes back on we have no signal and have to wait for it to synch up, this has happened twice now in the middle of us watching one of thier horribly overpriced on demand "HD" movies.
As for the cable i cant say a single bad thing about it. It just works and is the fastest in town by a long shot.

Fought with this company from day one to get things right (about 5yrs). I had terrible ping, packet loss and speeds. I called and called seen so many techs that I can't remember how many. I was even told to move by customer service at one point. She said there is nothing we can do to fix the problem. Xbox live wouldn't work correctly either. But, as usual its not their fault, its always the owners equipment. Heres the latest email I recieved from support blaming Microsoft. "Thank you for your recent email inquiry. We are aware of a known compatability issue regarding Microsoft Xbox Live in your area. We are actively working with Microsoft Support and aiding them while they work to resolve their issue." The last line really makes me laugh. Cause the fact is, it was Mediacom to begin with. They gave me the wrong modem right from the start and continued to exchange with the wrong modem year after year. Thank god they finally hired a tech that knew what was going on. He came in and seen the modem I had and instantly said that it wouldn't work. It can't handle the speeds so it throws fits. Soon as he hooked up what I should've had to begin with and everything straightned out and has had no problems since. Great speeds, no packet loss, low pings and my xbox works. Sure is funny how this was Microsofts problem and I should move. Fact of the matter. Mediacom should really put in place better training programs for their techs so they know what equipment should be used.

Did not rate Pre sales/install since I have have been on this cable modem the past 9 years B4 Mediacom purchased the system. Mediacom upgraded the system to 8000/512 in 1/07. Node was upgraded in 10/07 to regain top speed during primetime, and has been steady since. Had some performance issues in 7/08, but replacing the drop from pole to house has cured the problem to date. Still waiting for a line crew to replace a section of overhead trunk cable that squirrels have chewed on.

"Fast enough for us, only high speed available where we live, tech support helpful"
"Charge for modem if you use their junk modem or buy your own, small list of supported modems, charge extra if you use a router"
"Fairly reliable and recently updated speeds at no extra charge. Good ISP for us"

We originally we on the 5000/256 package, but recently it went up to 8000/512 for no extra charge. I would consider the 15000/1000 package of theirs but you can only use their modem and I do not want to pay the additional "install fee". Current speed is plenty for us considering the only other option is dialup.
When we moved into our house the previous people told us that there was no high speed internet available. After a couple years living here we saw a guy working on a box in front of our house and I asked him what he was doing. I gasped when he told us that high speed had been available for a few years here. The next day he came back and had us going. Just recently we started getting bulk mail advertising for them.
Mostly a positive experience. Service is up most of the time. Some times we lose service during an electrical storm, but a phone call and within an hour or two the service is back. I do not blame them for mother nature. One time we had a cable go bad between the box on the street and the house and within a day a guy came over and fixed it. So overall I would say it has been good service.
I decided to buy my own modem to save money and shortly after I bought it they started charging whether you rent a modem or not. Their list of supported modems is not small, but must be fairly outdated. Some of the modems on the list are not even made anymore and I could not find any of them at the local B.B. or C.C.
The $68 we pay a month is $45 for the internet and the rest is basic (about nine channels) cable. The normal rate for our level of internet is about $55 per month. We have satellite television and decided to go with basic cable for the few times a year the dish does not work due to severe weather.

For now Im happy with Mediacom but they had just put this all in, so we'll see when they get a bigger network load...
Update: Since the review I have had 4 downtimes of about 10 minutes each, when it goes out its out along with my tv so id bet that its a tech messing or adding splitters or amps on a pole close by. Speeds are still good all except for my bad SN ratio which dips low enough at times to give me a few HFC: LOST TRC SYNC at times.
Update 3/30/03: Lately during peak hours Ive been getting 300-600ms pings. The thing is, its on the 4th hop and not the local HFC IP. The 4th hop on its 400-600ms+, the lag starts @ 4pm and ends @ 12am. My downloads dip below 100k/s. Ive contacted Mediacom and they sent me a ping tester, Ive sent them in and havent gotten a reply yet. --- This only lasted 2 days, and then it was fine.
Update 10/05/03: The service has been good lately; there have been a few outages mainly during storms.
Update 02/18/04 Service has been good, I like then new caps. The outages have been increasing though
Update 2/8/05: I've been having slowdowns during peak hours, and Sundays are bad. There are almost weekly outages.
Update 4/18/05 I do not use Mediacom anymore.
