    My Other Reviews·Verizon Online DSL
Not much needed to be said, used from 2001 to now, 7 years
I am using Time Warner cable line with Earthlink cable service, cheaper than road runner. Besides a few drops of connection in summer due to cable line instability in earlier year (fixed later on), the connection is generally fast and stable, 90% of the time can reach 1MB (1.1x MB max) download speed. For this good performance, I don't really need to call the customer service, which is a good news.
Though the upload can be a bit faster, just about 60KB max, usually around 50KB. I hope it can go to 100, at least 80.
Changed the modem from the bigger Toshiba one to the smaller RCA one 1 to 2 years ago, I think it helps the connection stability a bit.

    UPDATE (09/15/08)
now it is very slow at night in peak hour, this situation has been going on for a month already.
Before, I can still get 6 or 7mb download in peak hour (max is 10mb) , which is still good. Now, it can drop a half, or as slow as 1mb or less, which is totally unacceptable.
I may as well as which to Fios when it is available since the price is about the same, and the upload is faster.

I hope fios come soon so that TW would get some pressure

    UPDATE (01/08/09)
ordered the verizon 7.1mb dsl on 1/6 (since I am really fed up with the cable's super speed drop in peak hour), dsl kit shipping in 7, got it today. The system will be ready on 12. Let's see what will happen.

    Thanks for the info

I'm still using the old Toshiba modem. Do you believe you are getting a better connection with the RCA? Did you have to pay for it or did Time Warner swap it for free?

Thanks for the heads up. I have the PCX2500 and for the past 6 years, I don't really have any major complaints.

better to a degree I think? At least it won't mess up the internet connection, and the modem is smaller.
You can to a TWC service center near your area to change to RCA modem, they won't charge anything.

Initially I had Earthlink because it was cheaper than Road Runner without a TV package (I used DirecTV). RR was $60/mo Elink was $42 a no brainer!

Install was no issue as I had Road Runner so I didn't have a thing to do except reboot my modem. I seem to have a static IP tho I didn't ask or pay for it.

I originally had the Toshiba modem but they changed it last year to an RCA.

After a few years of great service with Elink Time Warner service went nuts! Since Feb 06 I've had low speed issues, high latency and severe packet loss making my 2 years of Vonage VoIP almost useless!

    RANT

After complaining and getting my own customer relations rep to call when I had problems I'm ready to give up! All I get is useless service calls and waiting for them to 'diagnose' my problems which BTW are in their, Time Warners, plant. They deny any logs or ping tests I give them showing all my issues so I am going to persue the complaint to the city authorities and see if I can get what I pay for and some well deserved credit!

Time Warner is oversold and has no idea what an internet connection means to a disabled person. I even order food over the net! They need to be exposed and fined for the way they treat me and others I'm sure. They severly lack people skills!

Like I said, I'm waiting for FIOS TV & net to get away from the cable companies who are just greedy company salespeople that don't deliver what they sell us and collect anyway!

FYI-I have few options here in Manhattan. DSL isn't as fast as cable IMO, I've had a 1.5 meg DSL line and switched to cable. I would love to stay with Elink but can't stand the hoops Time Warner makes me jump thru to fix their problems which are network maintenance issues in the plant. The lies and deceit are unbearable and frustrating too!

    Help!.

    END RANT

    UPDATE-

I've been upgraded to higher speeds like 6500/470 from 5/384! No one told me. I still have high latency and dropped packets with a signal problem since Feb '06. I've had a dozen calls since May '06. They just keep sending techs to do the same thing over and over again to no avail so far. I've been on their case since May so I hope to have a clean signal by Labor Day!

Why am I charged for service I don't get? THIS HAS BEEN FIXED AS OF 9/06!

UPDATE-added 1/30/08 to fill in the gaps. I've adjusted my meds after the upsetting time TWC gave me in 06.

After filing a formal complaint with DOITT in NYC I got my own rep from TWC. I drove her nuts for a few weeks until she handed me over to a 'level 3' tech and I started keeping logs(they didn't like mine). I proved my connection suffered and after 6 months it was miraculously fixed and working like a it used to and better. It was a bad amp in my backyard and oh they were upgrading the plant! No one was 'allowed' to admit that they were upgrading. I didn't care I got a good, reliable connection now and a $250 credit.

So to be clear now, my internet connection is the fastest I've ever seen now and the reliability is back! 100% reachability consistently. So from Feb 06 to Aug/Sept 06 I've had horrible service and unusable VoIP. Jan 08 it's 10/512 and works just like it should, even in the evenings. That's all in the past now so I'll move on......

    UPDATE-10/07

Just got the speed bumped up to 10/512! Now that Earthlink is laying off most Americans I am gonna switch to NYConnect thru TWC. Now that TWC has done the upgrades to their systems the signal is better except for the traffic shaping etc. I don't use BT but still notice slow download speeds when I do download a program or update. My service is monitored thru BBR and it comes in very handy when things go whacky here. At least I know why things don't work now. Yes it's TWC again!

I had a bad experience with Earthlink when I tried to use their VoIP service. It cost me $$ and I got NONE of what was promised to me to make up for it (reduced monthly fee for internet service-$35 instead of $45) when I used the service for 1 day and cancelled. Yes it IS that bad! Seems like the CSR can promise you heaven but it MUST be approved by a supervisor before being applied. This is why I'm leaving too.

    Update 1/26/08

I'm on New York Connect and so far so good. My latency has been reduced a bit and my connection seems more stable. Same speeds as Road Runner but less hops to get to NYCT servers. Newsgroups-eh-missing some-still looking.

Hooked up with DirecTV also to drop TWC TV too! Love all the HD. Now to switch my VoIP provider & I'll be a happier person. I'm trying out a new provider right now and boy does VT really stink! I'll be eating 2 months of my VT contract but at least I'll get phone calls and be able to hear people.

    Update 2/17/08

Well after a month of the new VoIP provider and having 2 phone adapters, 1 from VT and the new one, to compare, I have a reliable phone again! It's awfully nice to have a good internet connection and reliable VoIP service again. I had Vonage for 4 years with trouble only from the ISP in '06. I can honestly say now without a doubt that VT doesn't work for me! Side by side with another provider makes this decision easy. VT doesn't work here. The features are useless if the phone service doesn't work. In fact I've recently had number forward and simul ring NOT work! I've had to give my friends a new temp number until I get ported out from VT.

I'm waiting for the port of VT to complete so I can have better service from my main number. I have 2 different phones. 1 on VT w/old number & 1 on the 'other' w/their number. Soon my old number will connect to the new provider and I can move on with my life. Yea!

    My Other Reviews·ViaTalk
I Switched from Roadrunner to Earthlink a few months ago. Sppeds were identical, but I was to receive 12 months at $19.99, verified by their sales staff. The first thing I noticed was that I immediately started getting tons of spam. I opened 3 accounts and each receive no less than 20-40 spam a day- which started immediately. Then I got my first bill. Low and behold, I was being charged $29.95/month. I called to complain, but simply got the run around from Earthlink. Time Warner in SE WI finally offered to right the situation and go after Earthlink themselves, as they admitted it was their fault, but refused to do anything about it. Then I started experiencing bursts in ping while gaming in the 350-550 range. These bursts would last about 15 minutes and then go back to normal, I called Earthlink, who referred me to Time Warner, who connected me to Roadrunner who said it wasn't their issue (and it wasn't), but tried to assist anyway. So RR is was working to fix Earthlink's issue, because they were too lazy to do so. I was never really given an answer, but the issue resolved after a week or so. While I was on the phone with Earthlink, I asked about all the spam I was getting. I was told to simply increase the blocker software they offer to high, which means that no one outside my address book would get through. While there may be a few people this is ok for, 99.9% of people that has HSI, do see that as a viable option. As an occasional Ebayer and because of work, a filter that strong isn't possible. So basically, Earthlink passes off their technical issues to other ISPs, passes off their customer service to others and passes off their email filtering to their customers, so they don't have to. I highly recommend going with another service if it is available. This company sucks!

Update: After another botched offer that they refused to fulfill, I dropped them as fast as I could. I called to drop and they promised me a retention special for 6 months at $29.99. After never seeing the price, I called and went round and round with their inept customer service again. Again they acknowledged their mistake and again they did nothing to fix it.

Time Warner got involved and basically paid me what Earthlink owed me. I switched back to Road Runner and will NEVER deal with Earthlink again. They are a dishonest, disreputable company and I hope they and their offshore customer service sink linke a rock!

Earthlink service was good for 2 years but now it sucks.I already described my problem on earthlink forum. Slow speeds and high ping during the evening time. I will switch to Verizon Fios once they will be in my area. otherwise i don't have a choice. They don't care about customers anymore.

I ordered Earthlink Cable Service last Thursday May 29. I received call from TW and they said that somebody will come and make a installation on Tuesday June 3. So when the guy came he just hook up modem and after that I was already online. A lot people complain that they Earthlink is giving away RCA modems and they don't do this anymore, they will give you Thosiba modem.

My speed is great ( around 2300 download stream / 400 kps upload stream) so I got this speed all day long and all night even like you know that cable is a sharing network. Earthlink is doing great job.

I have Earthlink for 2 days so right now I got no problems with that's why I never use Technical Support. Another thing a lot of you guys and gals write that TW guys who come to install service that they are dirty, smell not good. Hey what's going on ?? Do you want to some prince that some kings came ?? Just think a little bit. Also it is great deal, by first 6 months you pay only $ 29.95 and after that $ 41.

I will update my review in few next days. See ya.

Guys I am back and tell you that my speed is keeping around 3000 / 400 kps. Last night I saw that websites are opening slowly but it was fault of my broswer Internet Explorer so I figured out this by myself. Everything is working greatly. Few days ago I downloaded movie from Kaaza and my avarage speed was 300-350 kbits. So it took me only a hour even less to get movie which size is around 700 mb.

Earthlink rocks just keep it this way.

    UPDATED:

    Hello everybody.

ok today I had little problem but it wasn't something big/ I left my computer on all day but I didn't use it. Evening when I cambe back I saw that CABLE light and DATA light were off(thosbia modem 2200). So I knew it that it is not working. I checked my cables outside and inside, everything was connected so after that I turn off my computer and then I disconnected power from modem. After 2-5 minutes O plug in back power and it was on everything came back. I checked my connection speed and results were the same. Also at this time some channels on my TV had poor receptions. But right now everything is working great like before, nothing change.

    UPDATED:

I found why did I get disconnect from internet, it was cable fault. I fixed it, exchanged cable and now it is everything is perfect. So I got no futher problems with it.

    UPDATED:

I don't know what do you think about RoadRunner which belongs to TW but a lot people got problems with RR (RR=Road Runner) and they are expensive. Also some Earthlink users complaint about that speed is down or something where later you figured out with tech support that this is a fault of modem. The thing is that my 5 friends ordered Earthlink and all of them got RCA modem (white color) where everybody says that it is old modem. I have Thosiba 2200 and this modem is working great. My friends have RCa modems and they receive great speed all the time. I went to my friends and I use DRTCP to change some connetion config like a RWIN and MTU. After that they really got high internet access.

I was helping a neighbor with her Earthlink. Her computer broke last febuary, and I was fixing it about 3 weeks ago. Yea, not someone who most of us can relate to, just going with out internet for 4+ months because your computer is broke. Anyways, I call up earthlink tech support because the log-in/pass isnt right. So, reset the password.

    Still doesnt work.

They ask for the username. Easy right? This is been her username and email address on her busness cards for the last 2 years. Turns out, even though they were collecting the 9.95$ per month, they put her email address in the inactive list and let someone else snag it. Want to know what the seinor managment told me on the phone?

    Quote
You have never had this email address.

I was blown away by the arrogance of it. Never use Earthlink.

Update 05-17-2006: It's amazing how much can change in 6 months. V erizon's FIOS service is now available in my area, offering ridiculously high speeds for much better prices than Earthlink/Time Warner. Time Warner still has not budged on line speeds which is extremely irritating. 384kbps upload speed simply does not cut it nowadays, especially when Verizon is giving 5Mbps upload (the same as my DOWNLOAD speed). Overall the cable internet here is not worth it anymore if you can get something better. If TW and EL don't budge soon, they will be losing another customer.

Update 08-10-2005: IP address has now remained the same for over a year. Speeds during off-peak times are great, but I seem to suffer slowdowns during peak hours with latencies jumping from 50ms averages to 300ms+. All signs point to overloading of the ATDN network (Time Warner's routers outside the local cable system). These routers have become tremendous bottlenecks and I have found that many in the NYC area suffer the same issues during these hours (around 8PM to 12AM). I cannot blame Earthlink for this problem as they have no control over the issue, but I wish Time Warner would get on their game.

Also, I am getting pretty tired of 384kbps upload speed, especially now that Verizon offers 768 on some DSL packages and other providers are upping rates to 1-2Mbps to compete with the up and coming FIOS service. 384kbps is simply too slow nowadays, especially considering I'm paying $15 more per month than a comparable DSL plan costs. For this, I am dropping the "Value for money" rating from 5 to 3.

    We'll see what develops...

Update 02-05-2005: Absolutely no problems yet. *Knocks on wood* Speeds are now 5000/384 and I usually get 4750/360 on speed tests. I'm hoping for an increase in upload speed soon.

Update 08-03-2004: I couldn't have asked for a more stable connection. My IP address is still the same, and speeds have never dropped. Thank you Earthlink and RoadRunner.

Update 01-10-2004: Still rock solid. My IP hasn't changed since the day my service went on, which is amazing. Earthlink is a terrific ISP, but a lot of the credit has to go to Time Warner Cable for providing the fast, low latency network. Keep it up guys!

I signed up for Earthlink Cable after moving to my new home where DSL was unavailable. The staff was very friendly (as always) and helped me transfer my existing account to the new Cable account.

It took a bit to get it installed as I had to wait for a worker from Time Warner Cable to come and run the new line for my modem. Installation was free and so was the modem.

I used to pay $50 a month for DSL from Earthlink, but now I pay $42 for Cable. Speeds are great at right around 3000kbps download and 330 kbps upload.

Overall I am completely satisfied with my new service and only hopes it remains this way for a long time to come.

just switched, so I will give an up date if necessary; speeds are quite good so far; I cancelled after a few days; their tech support is consistently very sub par; it takes going through five or more people to get anything accomplished; transfers are rarely handled successfully within their system; their phone tree is quite user unfriendly; speeds were ok, but they billed me for dial-up, it took weeks to clear up; they "arranged" for me to be BOTH an Earthlink cust., AND a Comcast, and I was being billed by COmcast even after I cancelled with Earthlink; this also took weeks to correct; Earthlink has sunk quite low since their earlier days.

    The reason I cancelled so quickly, aside from them, was I received news from my doc, that tests indicated I needed an operation, and immediately, and then some rehab; I told them this when I cancelled and said I would chec back in a month. Last week I called them back to see if the same deal was available; it wasn't, but one of their sales supe's offered a free month and $29.95 for the initial months; I decided to give them another chance; this was on Thursday nite; from the previous experience, I was expecting to get back online in a short period, as before, but instead, in my post op state, I was subjected to and endless string of EL and Comcast fumblers, for over sixteen hours on the phones over three days, and still NOT connected; I was told late friday, that the only way to resolve this was to send out a tech; in spite of how absurd this seemed, they offered me an appt. on Sat., so I said ok; I waited for nearly the whole slot, then called in to be told there was NO appt. in the system for me; they offered me a sunday appt., which I also agreed to; in trying to still get this done over the phone and sooner, I called back on Sat., meeting with no success and the news that there was no appt. for me on Sun. any longer; an appt. was scheduled for Tues.; I decided that if this wasn't resolved by Sun. nite, I would revert to DSL. Imagine my surprise when the call came in Sun. AM asking me if I would be home for the tech; he came, found nothing wrong with the moddem, computer or wiring, and called in to a few different level 2 and otherwise upper level tech support; I had either spoken with members of these relams or had my "issue" escalated to them on a few occasions through Sat., with no success; one of these found some type of error entry on my account in a Comcast server, corrected it, and I was online. This was a situation exacerbated by the relationship between Comcast & EL, but EL's personnel, with a one possible exception, fumbled, lied, or did nothing to resolve this matter in any reasonable or intelligent manner; Comcast has their own things to be proud of! Meanwhile, now that I am connected again, the downloads are pretty darn good, but the upload seems slower than I remember; it will be a long long time before the stigma of this ordeal will fade;
