"Mostly reliable, good solid upload speed, downlink speed generally works well"
"Often oversold nodes, resulting in bandwidth below what is promised, though isn't too big of an issue w/ support"
"Speed (9m/512k) is great for price, as long as you can accept a little downtime or slower speeds"

[update 9/2009]
it took approximately 8 weeks to get my drop installed. as i understand it, 7.5 of those weeks were from the city of chandler. as soon as the permit was pulled, cox had a team installing my drop. from there, i just had to schedule a tech to actually hook the line up from the nid to the location i wanted it. a quick check of the signals and a speedtest and i was ready to go.
fast forward several months and my line is still up and running well. there have been isolated stretches were my modem would constantly lose synch, but it would only be for a day or two. i could still work online, but my voip/streaming video were out the door. i didn't want to call a tech unless the problems persisted, and they haven't.
i am still running the premier tier (currently 15/1.5 provisioned). within the next week, i should be seeing an increase to 25/3. while i'm not sure if i will need this speed, the preferred tier will increase to near my previous premier speeds. as such, i can downgrade if i really need to.
still happy with the service.
======================================================
[update 3/2009]
after a move that has caused our monthly expenses to increase, we have decided to drop cable tv altogether, though we are upping our speed from the preferred tier to the premier tier (it was reduced in our last move to save ~$15/month after cox voice wasn't available). i don't have any definitive numbers from any tests yet, as i am still waiting for the city of chandler to approve permits to install hardened lines under an alley into my house. it will be interesting to see a whole new area (moved completely out of mesa and into north-central chandler) and see how the speeds are. will update after my new lines have been pulled.
======================================================
[UPDATE 7/2008]
I have been playing for a few months with the upgraded package with the bundle. After complaining a bit to the local COX techs on the board, my numbers have fallen in line with where they should be. I have since removed my ScientificAtlanta WEBstar in lieu of a Motorola SB5120. I have seen more stability and the Motorola seems to handle unfavorable signal levels a little better.
Since my last update, COX has also bumped up the tiers offered with 12/1 now becoming 15/1.5 with PowerBoost on both upload and download. While my download is consistently around 15 (only drops to 12 during peak hours), my PowerBoost on the downstream doesn't kick as hard as it used to. However, this is just because of an overcrowded node and its not affecting my internet service much (PowerBoost only works for a few megabytes worth of transfer then cuts down to normal speeds and most of my UL/DL are 10+ megs. Overall, I have been happy with COX, though I will be moving to a new residence in a week and a half and will be curious to see how well the transfer of services goes.
============================================================
[UPDATE 2/2008]:
Its the 17th of the month, and I have just rechecked my speed using several online speedtest tools. I have now officially been upgraded to the 12/1 package. While the upload has seemed very steady and a welcome upgrade, I have yet to see more than 12meg from my line down (where my 9/512k package was delivering over 12 most of the day).
My packet loss is very little (if at all) and all of my original services seem to be holding up. I will report later when I know a little more about what Cox has promised me.
============================================================
In my area, only Cox and Qwest were available in terms of HSI providers. Have had (and implemented) DSL in the past and have never been a fan, plus not a big fan of Qwest. Preferred tier (currently subscribed) exceeded the most expensive tier from Qwest and was ~50% behind in terms of upload speed. Cost effective choice was Cox.
I am part of the bundle package (connection 60 phone, HD DVR, and preferred tier) through Cox. While I pay ~$140/month (slated for a $10 increase next month with a bump up to the premier tier [12+m/1m] as well), the service delivers. I purchased the ScientificAtlanta WebStar modem through Cox. Pretty standard fare, but being a Cisco-fanboy (I deploy $2 million+ in Cisco gear a year) I figured it was OK. The my professional installation was free, though I had to wait ~2 weeks or so for the actual installer to show at the scheduled time. Had it not been free, I would have been more than capable to install it myself, I just like "plausible deniability". My tech was very helpful and was prompt and courteous. He gave me his cell phone number and hours of work if I had any questions or problems.
After the installation of the cable services and verification of function, I put in my Cisco 871w and everything was up and running.
I host several services (FTP, VPN) out of my house, as well as having between 5 and 10 computers running off the same connection (depending on what I have to do for work) and I have been happy with performance. There are times of slowdowns and in the year and a half of service I have had two outages of about 4 hours each, but the service works as promised around 85% of the time and slower than promised about 14% (the leftover 1% is the downtime).
All in all, while I feel the prices could be a little better...everything has worked as promised.

I had Cox HSI for a period of 4 months in Mesa, AZ and it was the greatest HSI experience I've ever had. Setup was easy, it was fast and it never went out. I ended up disconnecting it because we had a house fire and moved but for the 4 months I had it, it was amazing. It's very cut and dry because there isn't a lot to say. It just worked, and it was fast. I could download at speeds above 2 mb/s and I loved every second of it.
My bill was so high because I had a few DVR boxes and the ultimate cable setup. the TV was a whole differents story but the HSI I give 2 thumbs up. I also rated tech support as a 3 because I never had to use it and I feel a 3 is sort of neutral.

I'm signed up for the 9Mbps/756Kbps package for $44.99 a month. For the most part I'm pretty happy with the service that Cox provides. We have very few down times and the speed has been pretty consistent 24/7. Would like to see some improvement in their speeds. Seems like the people in Japan and some other countries have much faster speeds compared to the U.S....why? I have dropped my Cox phone service in favor of using our Verizon wireless service for all phone traffic...seems to be just fine so far and I'm saving $26.00 per month now.

****Update****
Overselling the nodes. I get 14-15 out of 20 during non-peak and 10 during peak not the 20/2 I'm supposed to be getting.
***Update***
Still rock steady. [URL=http://www.speedtest.net][IMG]»www.speedtest.net/result/5396005···G][/URL]
****Update 6-6-09****** Since removing the bad wiring, everything works perfect.
****Update 5-15-2009******
Here's the thing: They give techs way too much work so they can't do a great job. After 3 Emtas, me buying a Motorola Surfboard (way better than the Arris), and 12 techs, the wire in the living room was bad. So, disconnected it--now works great! I don't have a cable. Techs do a test. It's okay. Then it fails less than an hour later. Took like 9 months to get them to really check the wiring.
If you want their number, PM me. File a PSC complaint (for phone--I lost dial tone 2x in 4 days) and tell them. They'll send out the best techs to fix it.
Thanks, Sarah, you're the nicest person I've talked to at Cox and get stuff done.
****Update 5-14-2009***
On 5-10, they replaced a splitter outside that killed the emta. No dial tone. HSI barely works--on and off on speeds. Cox techs are incompetent. Filed a PSC complaint on continous phone problems.
****Update 03.19.2008***
Another bad modem (Arris). Tech support reps are clueless. It was a Cox Phone Issue that cause bad HSI of 4/3 speeds. 2nd time an Arris modem has had to be replaced. Least they come today.
Update 02/05/08 - 15/3 is NOT 20/3!
----
Had it for 3 years and can't complaint. I have the phone service too and that makes it $100 a month. Speed great on upload since websites load much faster. I use GMAIL for email.
Digital Phone is awesome.

A recent return customer. My experiences with Cox HSI over the last 6 years have all been great. I only left them as a provider when I left the country. Currently I have the preferred level of service and the speeds are as advertised and most of the time considerably higher. The power boost pushes download to the 25-30Mbps range and the upload to the 3000-5000Mbps range.

During the day, when everyone is at work, I will get the speeds I pay for - 20Mbps down and 2Mbps up. Every night at 10PM the speeds drop to a crawl...1 to 5Mbps down but the upload remains the same. Haven't really talked to customer support yet as I KNOW what I'm in for if I do...they're going to want to send a tech out to diagnose the situation. Nothing is wrong with my end...its theirs... It feels like they're overburdening their nodes and its just dragging everyone's speeds down. I don't know if that is a legitimate practice or what...or if its only temporary, or if they're even doing it....but it sure feels like it, and it is very annoying. I'm not getting what I am paying for.
