I've been a customer of Cox Express since last May...first in Crowley, now again in Lake Charles. However, when i moved here, i discovered that ADSL was also available where i live, so i had to make a choice between the two. So in this review to help out others, i'll assign the good and bad points of Cox Express:
Good Points
1. Extremely fast on the set up. Same day modem assignment, and then it's just plug and play. You could literally set up the account and come home to a working modem in less than an hour.
2. Speeds far outpace 56k modems. Typically, my low is 200, and my high is 800. I rarely get any higher or lower than those numbers, and i probably average about 600, although my speed is highly unstable.
3. Tech support is great...always friendly and helpful.
Bad Points
1. Capped speeds. Why must they insist on capping speeds at 1024? Why can't they at least go to 1472 so they can compete directly with DSL in the area? Grr... Ok, now before anyone jumps on me, yes, i am grateful for this service to even be available, because it completely destroys dial up speeds, but i think everyone gets what i'm saying on this one.
2. Very unstable speeds. Literally my speed can change as much as 400kbits/s from one second to the next at times. I probably average about 600-650 kbits, but at peak times it slows down to as weak as 200kbits. High end doesn't really compare to DSL either.
3. Loss of connection at times. For a while, it seemed like i'd lose my connection for at least 5 minutes every night. Granted, these were short periods of time, and i've only had about three outages worth complaining about, but it's still very annoying to be chatting on AIM one second and then trying to pick up your conversations 5 minutes later after it finally reconnects. In Cox Express' defense, one of the major outages i experienced was my own fault.
So there you have my review, ADSL is already activated at my house, and the guy who came to do it promised me 1472/256 kbits of pure speed...only time will tell if i'll get the full amount...but if word of mouth means anything, i most likely will. Although the tech support guy from Bellsouth scared me when he told me my speeds may be as low as 700kbits...but then again, the tech support guy was speaking of general cases, while the guy who came to my house was talking about my connection in particular... Oh well...at least it'll be stable..hopefully. I'll try to post a review of it sometime next week after i get the modem Monday.
Overall, Cox Express is sadly average, but if it's all you can get in the way of broadband, TAKE IT!!! It's eons beyond 56k.
OH, and if anyone was wondering, i'm pretty sure it was a Static IP.
If anyone asks a question, i'll answer it...
Peace,
Phillip

The only thing I hate is lately I have been getting dropped like twice a session. Which means I have to reboot to get back up. Funny thing, the modem light is always green, even after it drops me...

I totally enjoy my Cable connection. Up and Download speeds are great. I'll (hopefully) never go back to dialup. It'll be like walking after you just wrecked your new Dodge Viper RT/10!
I had a little trouble when I first started the beta testing for my city. The technician was very expedient in the repair. He found a broken fiber optic cable 1 mile from my house. I was online in 1 day. The longest I've waited on hold for tech support was 5 mins. on a busy day. Very convenient billing. I had to buy NIC cards and a hub in order to use my two pcs with the cable modem.

So far I'm fairly satisfied with my connection. ** Speed 2229(down)/262(up) kbps ** (At least 44 times faster than a 56k modem). My speed is awesome and I've had no down time. I've been connedcted for 1 month.

I tried for months to get sprint DSL service and kept getting excuses such as modems on back order, etc. depending on who I talked to on that day. I finally called Cox cable and they offered to install the next day. I was up and running 2 days after I called. I am getting speeds of 1100-1200 down and 108-121 up. I've had the service 6 months and ther has only been one outage that lasted a few hours.

Tonight I just ran the speed report and : ** Speed 112(down)/123(up) kbps ** (At least 2 times faster than a 56k modem)
Whee - the blazing speed of broad band. It took over a month for them to get the modems in, and once they did I got not information on mail servers, news servers, nothing. Cannot recommend at all when it's good it's not too bad, but on nights like tonight - it's horrible. Pings are all over the place as low as 200 to 100% packet loss.
Tech support did call today while I was at work to see how I was liking the service. Didn't get in early enought to call back and answer that question.

I have had cable service for 2 years and my provider has change 3 times. Cox Communcations is now my ISP and like all the previous companies, I cannot complain about the servie for the most part.
I usually get a great connection and the down times are to a minimun if there is any work on the lines or anything. I have been affected by outages, like with most servies, but only about 3 since I first got hooked up.
The customer service is EXCELLENT and always very friendly and helpful and I have no complaints with them at all.
I have looked into DSL, but there is NO WAY I will pay those prices... still not reasonable for my area.

A previous review by dweidig pretty much said it all but I thought I would add a few things first of all right now the service just plain sucks. I was on the Austin RR Beta back in 98 and there beta period had much better service then this. When I signed up I had to drive about 15 miles up to Georgetown to sign up and pick up my modem. Get home hook it up and it works. Cool. Then I hop on a few games and realise that my ping is just sucking. Now after two weeks my average ping is about 200 - 600ms.
I called TS and they had me download that same file except I was getting it at maybe 17k/sec. They said they would have someone call me. Nope never happened not even a voice mail. Earlier this week I found out that they have it set to renew IP's every two hours!!! What the heck is that all about?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I'm getting the feeling that Cox hired a bunch of paper MCSEs to set up there network because as of right now their service just plain sucks.
Unfortunatly if you live in Plugerville it is your only non-dial up option for now. I called SWB late last week and they still didn't know if they were in this area yet. Thats one thing I dont get all of the Austin Metroplex is blanketed in broadband access yet 5 minutes down the road from Dell you get junk.
BTW I forgot to say they said my service would be 1028 down 128 up so far my average has been 200 down 128 up........ why does that sound like ISDN??????

My DSL/Cable story
I recently had tried to get Sprint DSL. First I tried their web site and was told I was out of range but try back soon. About three months later I tried again and was delighted to see DSL was now available to me! My connection was to be made two weeks later. A perk to this was the free modem and network card, which was to sent previous to the installation. Two days before my appointment I had gotten no modem. I called Sprint and was told I was out of range and would be getting no DSL. This explained the lack of a modem. Three days after this call I received my free modem I called back and they said it was a mistake and would send for it. One hundred and thirty days later I still have this useless peripheral.
I now was lucky enough to make the right choice......Cable! To be specific Cox Cable in the Las Vegas area. One call and they said they would be here the next day! I had plans so they accommodated me and came one week later, on time, friendly and knew what they were doing! The service is within 20kb +/- the advertised rate consistently. The only drawback is that they have no "home-start" page but I change mine often anyway.

I've updated my listing to reflect Cox's poor service in the Pflugerville area. I've been with the service for about a month now and have been very disappointed with the service. Every weekday evening the speeds slow to modem speeds and sometime even slower making the service virtually unusable and nowhere near a $40 value. Both the local tech and remote call center support say that there is a line noise problem in the area, but I haven't seen any real evidence that they are moving quickly to fix the problem. The speeds tonight are so bad that an FTP session to one of Cox's own servers could only download a file a 1.5 Kilobytes/second. The speeds are still generally running 200-400 Kbs during lighter hours, but evening speeds range anywhere from 10 kbs to 120 kbs. I'm on the main plan with service speeds stated at 1024 kbs downstream/128 kbs upstream. I was hoping that they were doing an automatic refund for Pflugerville residents, but it looks like I'll have to call customer service to request a refund.
Unfortunantly, DSL is still unavailable in my neighborhood, even though SWBell has wired a couple of new boxes in the area, but I'm not sure if they are the DSLAMs for Project Pronto.
