6/18/2012

I was with Cox in Santa Barbara for many years and moved to Las Vegas in 1998 about the time Cox bought out the Prime service in Las Vegas. I was on their TV and Preferred internet service here (10 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up) until a couple months ago when I signed up for their phone service. As a result of adding the phone service, they gave me their Ultimate internet service at the Preferred rate for one year and all premium TV channels free for 3 months. I pay $152 a month, including taxes and fees, for the three services I have now, including the temporary free services and the regional sports tier. I just ran speedtest.net and got ping 22 ms, download 60.9 mbps, upload 5.3 mbps. Cox gives you 10 email addresses and 50 Gb of cloud storage with their service.

I've always done my own installs. I have a Moxi DVR with a cablecard from Cox. When I got the phone and Ultimate internet upgrade Cox came out and installed their modem and checked my lines to make sure they could handle the Ultimate internet service. There was no charge for this, and there is no charge for the modem. Everything has been working fine since the upgrade.

The only problem I've had dealing with Cox is that their first level representatives on their main local number do not have any product knowledge beyond what's on their internet site. Even the tech level internet support is not as knowledgeable as they should be. But, the techs they send out on calls are very good, both those from Cox and the contractors they use.

I'm a member of a local club in Las Vegas that has members using all the different services in Las Vegas: Cox, Century Link, and Clear. Reports from club members suggest the Cox is head and shoulders above the other two. I did the Clear free trial a couple years ago and it was not as advertised.

My Other Reviews

·Verizon FiOS
Been with Cox since 2003 till March 2012. Then I move to get Verizon Fios business.

I can say the connection is very stable and reliable. Barely had outages, maybe once a year Cox was down but for a short time. Speeds are pretty decent and about what is advertise. I had the premier package, The download speeds average of 28Mbps and upload speeds were about 4Mbps. Upload speed is very important to me since I host a minecraft and Team Fortress 2 game server. Player slots were limited by upload speed which was fine since I understand I have cable. The only negative side was the small lag spike players complain, it stop when I use Fiber now so I know it was my Cox connection causing it. Plus it's on a share line with the rest of my area. You won't notice it if you don't host any FPS game servers, but just do regular small uploads you will be fine. Yes I'm one of the few use really needs a good upload speed.

Stick the with Preferred Tier, Premier Tier's cost does not justify speed for $15.00 more.

Agree! Cox Preferred is probably the best bet.

I just switched (downgraded) from Preferred to Essential and wish that I did not make the switch. My only reason for downgrading was Cox increased their prices again and I just got tired of the continuous price increases. After one month of using their slower Essential Tier I've come to the conclusion that I'm going back to the Preferred Tier and pay the extra $14 a month. Bottom line is I miss the SPEED! Here in Nebraska we pay $54.99 a month for the Preferred Tier.....Essential is $40.99.

High speed package(20 down, 5 up)
$150 per month includes second ip for another computer (Premier speed, only thing faster is "Ultimate"), basic cable, and landline phone service. Beats the hell out of CenturyLink!
Using their Cisco 3-function box - but a wide range of modems is supported.

I went with their 40 dollar for six months premier internet only service which gives me 27Mbps. I also purchased another policy through them which covers any additional charges if a repair man must come out and visit the home. I have actually used that a few times for lightning storms which have broken a splitter and added cable to another room. So far the service men and the technical support on the phone have been outstanding.

I have been a COX Subscriber for about a decade. It gets faster and faster, and without them raising the premiums for service in most cases.

It rarely goes down and when it does, they fix it immediately because they have the infrastructure and the manpower.

There is always somebody to talk to night or day, The price isn't bad if you get your own modem.

Caps

Don't forget the monthly caps on HSI, sucks but the unlimited bandwidth we enjoyed is gone.

Metered billing is coming up

I've had Cox HSI for years (since 1998 or 1999 I believe) and have NEVER had a problem. Speeds were always as advertised (or faster), reliability was always great, and the prices aren't near as outrageous as some ISPs (although not as cheap as others).

My sole problem in those 13+ years happened recently. Upon moving, I had an issue with disconnects sometimes as often as every couple minutes. This was ongoing and the techs sent out on service calls could not figure it out...

Then, I posted a thread here, and PMed resident Cox tech LAHSIHelp... I kid you not, he fixed the problem, remotely in a matter of hours.

Even though phone support and even service calls may not provide great support in severe cases, it's comforting to know that there are techs that devote their time to making sure help is given.

The tech I spoke with on DSL Reports didn't meet expectations, he FAR exceeded them.

----

Currently I am on the Premier Plus package at roughly $60 per month. Speeds advertised are 25/3, with PowerBoost speeds in excess of 30/5 Mbytes I believe.

I ALWAYS get advertised speeds, or at the worst, 1Mb below advertised. Oftentimes, I get substantially higher than advertised. My best (accurate, verified) speed test to-date was something like 86/5 Mb. My worst was around 24.x/2.x... and that is far from common.

----

As far as equipment, I am not sure what they are currently using. I know that they sold me a DOCSIS 2 Surfboard 5101 when I last did my HSI self-install, but I believe they are using exclusively DOCSIS 3 modems now.

Overall, you can't go wrong with Cox... No bandwidth or torrent throttling, no transfer cap, no hassle typically. Cox gets an A+ all day from me, but may seldomly be frustrating for less tech savvy users.

Wanted more speed. Switched from yahoo dsl to cox hsi. So far so good. Will update as needed. Also got a good deal for switching from dish to cable.

Update:

Getting tons and tons of arp traffic. Just part of the system from what i can tell. It would be nice tell when the traffic is mine , but oh well.

Update:

DSL is faster and a better deal. Getting tons of spam, from doubleclick = cox. Still getting tons of ARP traffic. After contract will switch back to dsl, unless cox makes me a good deal to stay.

Update:

Due to several questions; I am getting 3/256k, its just the arp traffic that is bugging me big time, getting charged for a additional pcs, there is no spam filter, down load and upload caps. I had SBC dsl before cox 1.5/128, had spam filter, and could network pcs at no cost, now they offer 6/384 if with in 10,000 of the co at the same price as cox. I know cox has a soho but at $80 a month for 4/256.

update:
went back to cox needed more speed

update 12/08/2009

no problems at this time, keep up the good work cox
