    My Other Reviews·Service Electric B..
I went from verizon DSL which I had for over 10 years to Service Electric (I moved)and now I'm using RCN. I switched from SE because of the promotion RCN was offering. Faster internet 10M from 6M and they offered much more HD channels on TV, over a 100. for $30 less per month. We'll see what the charges will be after the smoke clears? I hear fios is coming to this area soon so if that happens I'll probably be writing another review. You gotta love competition. Very good for us consumers.

Moved to Chicago from Minneapolis. Really surprised that Comcast didn't service the building I was moving into (Edgewater neighborhood). Building management said cable service was provided by RCN, a company I haven't heard of before. I looked into it, the website made it sound like a new company with a new (more reliable network), and I qualified for $55/mo for 20mb down, 3mb up + HD cable TV, but had to sign a 12 month contract. Sounded like a good deal, so why not.

Yikes. At best, I'm getting 10mbps down, and about 1.2mbps up....midweek. On the weekends, I'm lucky to see 5mbps down. In addition, I'm showing anywhere between 30-50% packet loss...on a regular basis.

Tech support is useless. They'll ask you to power cycle, they'll reset the modem, and then they'll send a tech out. The tech will find line noise, they'll send a network engineer to the node, discover line noise through the neighborhood, mark the issue resolved, and so repeats the cycle. I've escalated through different channels, but can't seem to find permanent resolution.

I'm hardly ever able to connect to the VPN in our Minneapolis office, and the connection is entirely unreliable during the day.

I just finished switching from RCN to AT&T DSL. Not stoked about the $45/mo for 6mbps ADSL, but at this point, I need a reliable connection, no matter the cost.

Bottom line? Avoid RCN...at least in Edgewater, Chicago.

So far so good. Ordered on thursday and was installed on friday - went with signature cable with hd/dvr, 1.5 mbs internet (just for the laptop to get email - have a commercial HSI for gaming), and phone. 95$ a month. lost some VOD choices from comcast - no more CBS on demand (kinda bummed on that one), but gained abc on demand for the wife.

speed seems consistant with what was ordered - may upgrade later to 10mbs service - if i cancel the business connection.

i recieved an arris MTA - unsure of model number
a motorola DCX3400 HD/DVR, and a generic motorola cable box

1 month later - i have upgraded to 10 Mbps internet - everything seems to be working ok

    Getting worth.
Speed is only 16-17 mbps on a 20 mbps connection.
Upload speed is stable and good.
    Connection is not stable.
Medium CATV quality. Poor marketing and technical support.

    Reasonable price.

I had to edit my review since first reviewing RCN. My internet speed WAS always as fast as advertised at all time of the day. For the past 1.5 yrs now, I NEVER hit my advertised download speed of 20Mb anymore. I rarely break 12-13 Mbps now. Please give me what I pay for.

I've had RCN internet service for a little more than a year now. It suits my needs just fine indeed. I decided to go with cable modem service, after two unpleasant experiences with DSL providers. Speeds, ( 5 Mps download, 384 Kps up ) are consistently where they should be, whether I use the company's speed testing sight, or speakeasy's speed tester.

The Tech who came by was prompt, courteous, and had excellent work habits. As my building was already cabled up for RCN service, he was finished in about 20 minutes. I'm not certain if he was an RCN employee, or one of the contractors.

I should point out that I am only a broadband internet service customer. I have no cable TV, phone service.

For interested parties, my modem is a Motorola SB5120, which I supplied myself. You can usually buy these at any of the big box stores, frequently on sale.

The only real problem is that they don't service all areas. If your area is not listed as having service available, call the company and double check.

Update, 10/11/09: I just upgraded to 10 Mbps (down) / 800 Kbps (up) for ten dollars more per month. All is well, speeds are where they should be. It didn't even take 24 hours for the speed bump to take effect, after I called.

FIOS is available to my apartment building, but I see no advantage to it for my purposes at this time.

    RCN Internet at LV

I moved to RCN last week and took the speed of 10MBPS...

I have not received speed of 5 MBPS continuously for an hour... I called them up 2-3 times but no success... Now looks like I have to move back to Service Electric which is expensive but reliable...

I have had RCN cable as my ISP for many years. Since they have come out with their 10MB service, it has been very reliable. I used to have a DSL line, but my high rise had too much interference and it was not dependable. I never had to call for support on this service because it has always been up.

If you're having the kids squabble over internet time and you have more than one PC, you can solve a lot of problems by getting yourself cable modem service and a router. Next thing...BANG two kids are on at once and at speeds so fast they'll needs seatbelts... Not thrilled with the upcoming "Analog crush' but what can you do??

    extra $20 per month?

What did you have before RCN, DSL or Dial up? And with whom?

You must be loving cable now. Don't know how you did without it internet wise before?

I was in the same boat about 4 years ago now, MSN dial up. Then in 2004, I got cable and haven't looked back since.

    Good luck with RCN!

Indeed. I went from AOL to MSN Dial-up and had DU for a total of 4 years. At that time, I switched to cable and have been there ever since. Almost 4 years now. I will never go back to anything slower.

After seeing what cable net does, my family considers it a utility.

I hope you continue to have a good experience with RCN. I've never had them (I'm on Comcast in an area not even served by RCN.) I would love to get my hands on that Mach 20/2 package.

Still, in a few months, I'll be upgraded to Comcast's 16/2 Blast! package.

You take care and enjoy that net the way it should be.

I don't have any problems with RCN here. It's a 5 meg cable connection with local phone service for $60 month. The only competition around was a 1.5 DSL connection through Verizon for $72, so choosing RCN was a no-brainer.

    Slow upload

RCN now offers 3M/768k for ~$20. If you can deal with having a slower download speed, then it may be worth it to check it out since you'll double your upload speed.

I didn't like being locked in for 2 years to get a good rate but it was the best option at the time. Now that I've had them for 18 months they've changed my service so I'm not happy. In the last few months they've had a few internet outages so it's become less reliable. The first year of service was fantastic but based on the last part of my service I'd never do business with them again.
