I've had RCN internet service for a little more than a year now. It suits my needs just fine indeed. I decided to go with cable modem service, after two unpleasant experiences with DSL providers. Speeds, ( 5 Mps download, 384 Kps up ) are consistently where they should be, whether I use the company's speed testing sight, or speakeasy's speed tester.

The Tech who came by was prompt, courteous, and had excellent work habits. As my building was already cabled up for RCN service, he was finished in about 20 minutes. I'm not certain if he was an RCN employee, or one of the contractors.

I should point out that I am only a broadband internet service customer. I have no cable TV, phone service.

For interested parties, my modem is a Motorola SB5120, which I supplied myself. You can usually buy these at any of the big box stores, frequently on sale.

The only real problem is that they don't service all areas. If your area is not listed as having service available, call the company and double check.

Update, 10/11/09: I just upgraded to 10 Mbps (down) / 800 Kbps (up) for ten dollars more per month. All is well, speeds are where they should be. It didn't even take 24 hours for the speed bump to take effect, after I called.

FIOS is available to my apartment building, but I see no advantage to it for my purposes at this time.

    RCN Internet at LV

I moved to RCN last week and took the speed of 10MBPS...

I have not received speed of 5 MBPS continuously for an hour... I called them up 2-3 times but no success... Now looks like I have to move back to Service Electric which is expensive but reliable...

So far so good. Ordered on thursday and was installed on friday - went with signature cable with hd/dvr, 1.5 mbs internet (just for the laptop to get email - have a commercial HSI for gaming), and phone. 95$ a month. lost some VOD choices from comcast - no more CBS on demand (kinda bummed on that one), but gained abc on demand for the wife.

speed seems consistant with what was ordered - may upgrade later to 10mbs service - if i cancel the business connection.

i recieved an arris MTA - unsure of model number
a motorola DCX3400 HD/DVR, and a generic motorola cable bax

I have had RCN cable as my ISP for many years. Since they have come out with their 10MB service, it has been very reliable. I used to have a DSL line, but my high rise had too much interference and it was not dependable. I never had to call for support on this service because it has always been up.

If you're having the kids squabble over internet time and you have more than one PC, you can solve a lot of problems by getting yourself cable modem service and a router. Next thing...BANG two kids are on at once and at speeds so fast they'll needs seatbelts... Not thrilled with the upcoming "Analog crush' but what can you do??

    extra $20 per month?

What did you have before RCN, DSL or Dial up? And with whom?

You must be loving cable now. Don't know how you did without it internet wise before?

I was in the same boat about 4 years ago now, MSN dial up. Then in 2004, I got cable and haven't looked back since.

    Good luck with RCN!

Indeed. I went from AOL to MSN Dial-up and had DU for a total of 4 years. At that time, I switched to cable and have been there ever since. Almost 4 years now. I will never go back to anything slower.

After seeing what cable net does, my family considers it a utility.

I hope you continue to have a good experience with RCN. I've never had them (I'm on Comcast in an area not even served by RCN.) I would love to get my hands on that Mach 20/2 package.

Still, in a few months, I'll be upgraded to Comcast's 16/2 Blast! package.

You take care and enjoy that net the way it should be.

I don't have any problems with RCN here. It's a 5 meg cable connection with local phone service for $60 month. The only competition around was a 1.5 DSL connection through Verizon for $72, so choosing RCN was a no-brainer.

    Slow upload

RCN now offers 3M/768k for ~$20. If you can deal with having a slower download speed, then it may be worth it to check it out since you'll double your upload speed.

I didn't like being locked in for 2 years to get a good rate but it was the best option at the time. Now that I've had them for 18 months they've changed my service so I'm not happy. In the last few months they've had a few internet outages so it's become less reliable. The first year of service was fantastic but based on the last part of my service I'd never do business with them again.

Living in the lehigh valley market watched the other markets get "Analog Crushed" was heartbreaking. There was no promise, no insight, no future for our market to gain more HD and other channels. That, my friends, has changed. By the end of 2009, the lehigh valley will be "analog crushed" and we will reap the benefits of more HD and more choices!

I used to be a Verizon DSL customer with the 640/90 line.

I saw RCN doing promotional stuff in my building and decided to give them a try. I tried them out for about a month and everything was great. Cancelled my DSL and went with them. It's been almost 2 months since I've been on RCN and I haven't had any major service interruptions. I had one interrruption but I was back up in about 10 mins.

The speeds on here blow my DSL away. I constantly get around 1300/800 while on verizon i got 500/80. Big difference as you can see. During peak usage times, I also get that speed, it seems to never slow down. I pay the same price as I did with Verizon. Since I already had cable TV it wasn't a hassle to switch over. All they had to do was split my line.

The technician came over on time like I was told. Was very curteous and completed everything in under and hour.

When I got the service I was told that it has a dynamic IP addressing system. But I seem to have kept the same IP address from day 1. My modem is a RCA modem It's not the best and it shows

But the only minor complaint I have is my email address for RCN gets a huge amount of spam. I checked my email on the day I got my RCN account and found dozens of emails that did not belong to me, I haven't even given the email address to anyone yet. Since then I haven't used or checked mail at that email address.

Now that RCN has upgraded their plants in Chicago to be full Digital and increased their HD channels they are a pretty good choice. Their customer service is unexcusable, however! The 3rd party call center is USELESS. Without the RCN guys that monitor the BBR forum, I would have switched to DirecTV or Comcast long ago. I truely feel sorry those that dont know about this forum. The other thing thats bugs me is their treatment of CabelCards....Most CSR act as if they dont know what they are or say that it is an outdated technology.....I have been given SO much false info its amazing! GET OVER IT, not everyone wants to rent your crappy equipment!

7/30/08 - I dumped my $40 RCN Phone line and ported it over to the new $10 per month T-Mobile @Home Unlimited Service.

9/20/08 - RCN has added about 15 new HD channels this week to the Chicago Lineup....Well Done!

9/26/08 - The RCN Overseas Call Center has slipped to a point that is below horrible. It is almost impossible to get them to sucessfully complete a task like troubleshooting an issue or adding services to your account...

    RCN and Cable Cards

I couldn't agree with you more about RCN dissing people with CableCards. I don't want the box. There's not enough content on the HD channels to warrant it.
I've had a technician out twice because I'm missing 3 of the Basic HD channel lineup and 2 others are breaking up. He's checked everything. The lines, the pole, the connections..Refreshed the connection.
It's clear to me that RCN hdqtrs is blocking some of the basic HD channels for which i am paying. I've called a supervisor and left messages 3 times and had no return call. There's no way to get to a real person locally (DC)(and who's not in the Phillipines) who can unlock HD channels that I should be getting.
I've wasted enormous amounts of time calling and e-mailing about what should be a simple issue of unblocking a few channels.

    Re: RCN and Cable Cards

Which ones are you missing? I've been missing 3 of them as well--NFL Net, Versus, and one other. They can't seem to figure out why I'm not getting them (told me I should), but can't come up with a fix.
