    Web site is down often, can't login. Tech Support staff bounce you around from person to person without trying to address issues/problems. Tech Support seem to be confused; each staff member contradicts the previous one. Email seems to be reliable; connection is almost always on. The few connection outages have been during power failures or around 9am. The service isn’t as fast as advertised. P2P/Bittorent is throttled even though BitTorrent is one of the advertised uses of the service. The service has a very small bandwidth cap, and planned fees for going over cap are high. ISP’s site for monitoring bandwidth usage rarely works.

    There is

    Hey there,

    There is other choices... Unless you can't get DSL in your area.

    I use a company called TEKSAVVY, they are VERY good and 1/2 the cost of Rogers or Bell.

    May be worth giving a shot.

    Add it up

    @rogers.com

    Customers dissatisfaction

    Totally agree Rogers service in Markham is really bad, as I have been having nothing but trouble with their service.

    slow speeds, speed throttling,

    Anytime after 4pm to 1 or 2 am your speeds drop off "up to" more that 80%...

    Rogers knows about the speed issues but do little to nothing about them. If anything don't opt for Extreme or Express go for Lite/Ultra lite if you must even though the caps (your limit of bandwidth per month) are way to low..2gb,!Don't expect to use your internet for anything else than email/Surfing (No downloads)exclusively.

    If I had choices for Internet I would drop Rogers in a second.

    gurn

    @rogers.com

    tekcrappy

    actually teksavy's prices aren't half of rogers.

    rogers express 7m $44.95+$3 modem rental+free install+free static ip

    teksavvy 5m $29.95+$99.99 modem purchase+19.99 activation+$4 static ip

    and most important. add on the band rate $7 to $25 extra.

    Not to mention comparing dsl to cable.

    pls note that rogers speed that i use to compare is 2m faster. sorry tek's prices aren't half.

    Re: tekcrappy

    Since you are commenting on my review, I would assume you have read my review? Seems not tho. You would have known that between ~4pm to midnight the service slows right down. Infact people in my area get less then 1.5mbit do to rogers over selling and under servicing the node. Rogers has known about this issue for 2 years, yet still signs up new customers. So also could you explain how rogers 1.5mbit speed is 2mbit faster then 5mb?

    Seems like your mistaken on a lot of things gurn. Rogers doesn't offer static ip's on their residential service at all. So the fact that tek savvy offers one doesn't mean i would be forced to pay for one. I would have to upgrade to rogers business service to get a static IP from Rogers. And those packages START at ~$100/month.

    Secondly you seem to be including a $99 one time fee for teksavvy for modem purchase in a monthly comparison when thats not a monthly fee. Rogers charges about the same fee for modem purchase, infact when I purchased my modem from rogers it was $149.99...

    Also you failed to mention the usage caps. Teksavvy's is 200gb for that plan, while rogers is ??? 60gb or 40gb.. or 2gb depending on what support staff you ask. Also tek savvy's overage rate is $0.25/gb, where rogers depending on who you ask at the company will be between $1.50 to $10/gb.

    Sadly DSL isn't aviable in my area, which is why im still with slowgers.

    gurn

    @rogers.com

    whatever

    actually i respect your pain. it was the comment posted on this post that tecksavvy's prices are half that of rogers.

    first of all comparing dsl to cable service "usually" cable beats dsl in speed and especially reliability. I feel that tekksavvy is really taking over this forum and comments like teksavvy is half price i couldn't let slide.

    As for your issue, ok rogers is sucking in your area. Been there done that. Rogers fixed it and credited me down to the tier speeds i was getting (1m). yup i was passed around, yup never the same answer. In the end they fixed it. Compare that with teksavvy who usually just blames bell from what i can see on the forums here. big ol' pass the buck. Not that we are even allowed to see complaints on this forum since teksavvy seems to run and control there forum. (which has its pro's and con's)

    teksavvy's still the new kid to me, they sure have a lot of positive reviews. if they were in your area i'd say go for it. I believe there customer recruiting is focused on bell customers. The pricing does not compete with rogers.

    anyways im sorry you just can't compare a "good" cable service to dsl. its just a matter of if your cable provider is good in your area.

    Extreme Plus package, spec is 18mbps down 1.25mbps up. Connection does 14mbps at best, and during most hours of the day does less than 9mbps. So you might as well go with their 10mbps package.

    Plus they are charging 25$ for extra usage, so its all crap anyway

    8/15/08 - I received a personal phone call from the office of the President of Rogers. They heard my crys for a solution [for the many Rogers customers] to a security issue.

    - Service Specs -
    As of July 20, 2008
    --> High-speed extreme

    --> »www.speedcheck.rogers.com shows Extreme to be 10 Mbps/1 Mbps down/up.

    --> I get 9.66 Mbps/994kbps respectively to Rogers own servers.

    --> Real-world speeds will vary greatly depending on time-of-day, and connections outside of Rogers jurisdiction.

    --> Norton Security included. - not really for free, as it's rolled up into the cost to deliver service.

    - What I hate the most -
    --> Very expensive.

    - Requirements -
    GOOD FAST internet access in order to keep current for my job, hobbies, education, and increasingly to access and keep on top of very important services and discussions provided by my local government.

    - Service Deficiencies -
    --> Personal webspace is plain, no "added value".

    --> No advanced web services (PHP, MySQL, etc).

    --> Reduced quality of service due to interference with certain ports and services, such as bittorrent and encrypted traffic.

    --> Security violation: DNS redirection vulnerable (as of 7/29/2008) (still as of 8/12/08).

    --> Restrictive "Terms of Use" with regards to operating server applications.

    --> Partnership with Yahoo!

    --> Receive HTML error pages regularily, appears to be DNS related. Sometimes have to refresh a web page twice. Can be fixed by using almost any other non-Rogers DNS server.

    --> Rogers is experimenting with DNS redirection on invalid domain lookup.
    8/12/08 Update: Rogers has hidden an opt-out feature, unfortunately it requires a cookie be placed with the browser (a volatile opt-out). Upon opting out, I notice I'm still not getting proper error pages; I receive Internet Explorer error pages in Firefox (Rogers thinks it's ok to steal Microsoft's IE error pages).

    --> Rogers injects warnings into web pages when you're close to hitting your monthly bandwidth cap, a clear-cut net neutrality violation, and security violation.

    --> Norton Security - not really free as advertised, as Rogers rolls it up into the cost to deliver internet service. Norton's software gives nothing but problems. There are truely free solutions that work better, faster, and don't damage your computer if you have to uninstall them. If you choose to install Norton's, don't come asking me for help when it breaks. Value: $0.00, lower if it breaks the Windows in your computer.

    - Cost to Value Ratio -
    Rogers has issued several price increases over the years, and ALWAYS places the blame on increases in the cost to provide the service. The "cost to value" ratio grows worse with each price increase.

    - Other Services Offered -
    --> Home phone - overpriced! Why would anyone pay $19.99/mo for the first year, and $29.99/month there-after, only to get 1 calling feature included (ie: call display)? I've been using Primus talkbroadband for years, and I pay $15.95/month, and comes with 16 free calling features. Primus has made me a very happy customer, and I funnel the savings into my son's RESP.

    --> Cable TV - very expensive. Too many unwatched and unwanted channels. Cost to Value ratio is pathetic, when compared to a rectal exam.

    --> Cellular - expensive. Going to switch to another wireless carrier.

    - Repeat Service Issues -
    My connection has gone down several times over the past year, sometimes for a whole day. Calls to tech support result in the usual "We don't support home routers, connect directly" crap, yet the problem miraculously rectifies itself "during" the support call, while the router is connected. Inexperienced support reps. I get better tech support by placing my head inside the door jam, and repeatedly slamming the door closed on it.

    - Conclusion -
    Rogers needs to invest in more bandwidth, and improve network topography to offset technological advances. The internet will grow with more connected devices, and more software performing very cool stuff. Our ISP's should not interfere with internet access in any shape or form; this is referred to as Net Neutrality, and is a growing concern for virtually everyone who connects to the Internet. As "getting online" becomes more of a necessity, Net Neutrality will become increasingly important.

    If the world switches to encryption by default on all net traffic, that will restore the integrity of the service - it's time ISP's understood that we want them to be dumb pipes, not value-added services, especially when it involves them interfering with the data we receive.

    ** We need increased competition with better service! Rogers is a sub-par ISP. **

    I'd switch ISP's, but with my options limited to cable or DSL, and while throttling and other forms of interference persist, I won't be trading my noose for a tighter noose.

    My condolences to anyone who is affected by Bell's recent throttling of wholesale partners. It's time the big broadband players in Canada started to clean up their acts. Consumers won't tolerate this crap for long!

    I may require access to the internet, but it's the ISP's that are making the net less fun and less exciting.

    @teksavvy.com

    Glad someone knows what's going on

    You are one of the very few who knows exactly what's going on. As can be seen the number one shorted stock on the NASDAQ is level 3. Level 3 sells bandwidth which is still falling sharply in price and will continue to fall in price. Equipment costs have fallen sharply the Canadian dollar has risen sharply. All of this means sharply higher profits for internet companies. The rest of the world has passed part of the savings along to their subscribers while Canada in its' infinite wisdom has fleeced their subscribers by doing the opposite. It's so bad soon satellite internet from America will cost less than Canadian broadband.

    Just signed up For Rogers home phone the Basic services cost me the same as my old aliant home phone But becuase all of NB is local I am saving 23.00 a month on long distance as i almost never call out side of NB. The Voice quiltiy is far better than aliants and I only have to dial 7 digits for anywhere in the province. 1 small issue is that visual call waiting is no working but they believe that it is a compatability issue with my dual handset cordless phone and they are working on fixxing that. All and All a good deal and a great service.

    ***Update***
    With what appears to be an upgrade to 100gig cap The services goes back up to A++ in my books, Im not happy with the cap but it will let me go back to using the services like i used to as 100gigs was what i normaly used.

    *****update*****
    With the additon of the new caps I have been a little more than unhappy. tech support has been rude to me when I tryed to explian that I use more then the cap on a regular basis. my ratings will stay all the way down until i get some info on making something avaliable to heavy users like my self.

    *****update*****
    Another few months have gone by and I am still happy with my extreme connection and I have had very little down time and speeds have been rock solid.

    *****update*****
    As i promised it has been a month and everything is still 100% with my rogers connection, I am going to go over to there Voip services as soon as it is avalable.

    *****update*****

    Well i Finaly bit the bullet and orderd Extreme and I can say im Ertremely happy. The speed is consistant and i have not got less than 4.5megs for the point i signd up. all is going well i will up date againg after i have had it more than a month.

    ****Update*****

    Another year about to pass and I still have nothing bad to say about Rogers serivces, As a matter of fact I just signed up for the Long Distance package They offer to bundled customers. Well if all keeps going well when they start doing Voip ill be signing up for that as well.
    ________________________________________________________________________
    I signed on for Rogers 2 years ago and it has been going strong the hole time. I have only ever been down once it was solved by tech suport quickly and I was on my way.

    Non-the-less the install went well the installer got everything hooked and worked. I orderd the high speed express 3.0 meg connection and I have always recived that speed.

    The first modem I was given wa s the ericson pipeline and it worked well, about 3 months ago I got a letter that i could upgrade my modem to a motorola SB5100 and this has also been working well without any problems.

    Lastly DSL was an option for me but I had a friend in the building that had DSL and he was getting about 1.0 meg connection out of it soI said why not I'll give cable a try no contract so if i didnt like it I could pick up DSL. But becuse my speeds are always faster than his i keept my cable.

    Also my friend on DSL switched and To cable and he is much happier now. But like anything give it a try if it doesnt work for you try the other guys.

    ___________________________Update________________________________________

    Hmmm....

    No problems here. Your review is very incomplete. I am sure there are a lot of variables that are causing your poor connection. However you didn't mention much. Your review was nothing other than a "they suck" review. Which, honestly is pretty useless. I'm sure with a little effort and trouble shooting you could get most of your problems resolved.

    As for the throttling, well good luck finding away around that. EVERYONE is suffering from this now.

    Tech rep didn't show up on the appointed day. Got the cable internet connected 3 days later. They promised a $30 credit for the missed appointment.

    I had ordered their "Express" (7000kbps). I got their "Lite" (1000kbps) instead. Their customer service confirmed that my account specifies Express. Their tech support said "your contract hasn't been updated". When I asked "why did I get Lite in the first place?", the reply was "I don't know".

    Tech support "updated" my contract within minutes, and now I'm consistently getting approx. 6800kbps/270kbps, across the continent.

    I wonder how many internet users actually check their download speeds to see that they're getting what they pay for.

    I wonder if Rogers gave me 1mbps instead of 7mbps on purpose, thinking that I wouldn't know the difference.

    UPDATE: Someone asked me for an update since the original was written over a year ago.

    After a few months of the $100 service I switched back to Extreme. Most sites I dont get more than 7Mbps and newshosting I now get 10.

    NOT worth double the price for plus - the impression was that the speed would be that high on all sites - not so, it depends on where you connect to but most of the time it was no faster than extreme.

    I am NOT happy with them finally implementing the bandwidth caps and tested it out - I would have been charged an extra $25.

    A better system would be no monthly fee and just pay for what you use.

    ALSO, there is no easy way to check your usage, it doesn't show up on your home page you have to log on to rogers.com, and go through several links to get to view internet useage. The pop up warning in your browser once you go over X GB is also an annoyance and they are modifying the look and feel of the original web page by doing this.

    I've heard GOOGLE is going to sue them as the warning pushes the google bage down by about 1/3 of the screen so it doesnt fit right.

    I have updated my review scores as well.

    regards
    - Bruce

    I switched up to Rogers hi-speed extreme plus from hi-speed extreme and the switch was done while I was still on the phone with Rogers. At the time the max I could get was 13Mbps but after playing around I have managed to get up to 15.5 Mbps off newshosting (news servers) and some of the speed tests on here.

    This up from my previous 5.3Mbps. So $56 for 5.3 or $100 for 15.5 ? Works out to a cost of 10.6 per unit on hi-speed or 6.5 on high speed plus. So the bandwidth is cheaper, however the 90GB/month cap could be a drawback for those that exceed it regularly. Extreme had a 100GB/month cap but I have never seen that enforced unless you regularly exceed it.

    Over 90GB costs $1.25 per GB, to a max of $200 a month.

    As for the cap, they include both up and down traffic in their calculations.

    Re: whoa, where do you live?

    London, Ontario.

    Have rogers come out with their little meters and test your signal strength etc... and make sure you get what you pay for. If they say it is available in your area there is no reason why you can't get that speed.

    My dad was paying for their 3Mbps service and was gettting 1Mbps and they said it was within spec - bull - they changed the modem and he is now getting 2.6Mpbs throughput.

    I recommend the motorola surfboard - so far very consistent - and of course have them check your line quality.

    Also, check your panel the cable modem should come directly from the tap (outside) to your board and then direct to your cable modem. You do NOT want it going through a cable TV amplifier.

    Rogers put mine off a 2 way splitter from the tap, which goes direct to the modem, the other side goes through a 4 way 7db per connection amp for the TVs. It seems to work fine.

    Also, do not be afraid to ask them to re-run the cable directly from the tap to your board - might mean a little trench in your lawn. When I first moved here in 1998 they had to do that as the house was here since 1986 and the cable had rotted.

    And, dont go through the cable TV outlets - the internet should go direct from your tap to the cable modem - so you have a hole in the wall - put a filing cabinet in front of it.

    Hope this helps.

    I have been with Rogers hi speed express for almost one year. The ordering and installation went very smoothly, and I have had no issues about service during that time. Although the service I am paying for is for 3 mps down, I have been consistently getting 6500 kps down and 600 upload. This is more than I actually need (not complaining), and the 60 GB cap is no issue for me. So mark me down as a happy camper!
