I have had Shaw internet for 15 years. Over those years I can only think of 2 times I have had to call them for service and both times the problem was corrected fast.I have been very happy with Shaw and the service they provide.

Even when my wife worked for Telus and we were entitled to a employee discount with Telus, I kept Shaw. I was one of the original test users at Shaw and have never felt a need to switch to any other ISP. Shaw's support and service have been outstanding and we have even switch to Shaw's phone service. Buh-bye telus.

Update to my reveiw for Sept 17, 2008:
Shaw is still clearly the best choice for internet connectivity in Calgary.

Wow even faster then ever. Shaw continues to earn my business everyday.

I first started with high speed lite, then moved to high speed with only small amounts of improvements but neither services provided a reliable connection and download/upload speeds are less than half of that advertised. Sometimes downloading can slow down to about 56mb/sec almost at a dialup speed. They provide a Motorola cable modem. I have had many service calls to improve the services over the last 2 years (at least seven or eight calls), none of the techs were able to resolve the issue. Most of them went through the same steps as the previous tech and were unable to resolve the intermittent issues blaming the issue on this or that. They then state that they will send someone else to rectify the situation within the next couple weeks. This never happens and I then have to call in again. More often than not I would have would be intermittent connection although all the leds on the modem appear normal. I have tried different nic cards, different computers, different operating systems, and they even tried to replace the modem a couple times. Still I would get intermittent connections... page can not be displayed.. but after I refresh the screen, the page it shows up with out a problem. It did not matter if I was connected directly to the modem or via wired router. Also if I was downloading a large program it some times cuts out before download was completed. They have caused a lot of frustrations and wasted much of my time, especially waiting for them to show up, within a four hour window. There was a time when I waited for four hours and they did not even show up or call to explain they could not make it on that day.

    Thanks, Shaw

Remember that the Security of any network is dependant on the similarity if not exactness of how many keyboards are connected to in and pluged into the internet making it easy to trace the location of someone with a dis similar keyboard on any network.

As topic states. What does Register.com have to do with Shaw internet?

I have the default 7.5 Mbps/512 Kbps package. The Shaw guy was actually contracted out, so he wasn't too worried over the Starchoice dish I already had and didn't mind the diplexer that I was going to use to allow the two RF feeds to share the same coax.

Good speed 99% of the time. Uplink a little too slow for sending large files. Excellent technical support including the ability to enter your phone number for a call back instead of putting up with the blather coming through the phone when in a que. Modem updates without asking for older modems. Service people knowledgeable and quick to respond if problem is not at the shaw site. Overall, a pleasure to deal with.

    Update Feb 28/09
Been about a year since last update. Still having to live with the port scanning, but that is part of the reason I have a firewall up. Shaw service has improved, when tech problems arise I can usually get a tech next morning. And Shaw has proactively called me to ask about service I receive a few times. Still using Standard internet package, light phone service and digital cable.

    Update 07-08-08
After being prodded by system message, I have written this update. Service for the most part still works fine. It would be nice if Shaw did something about the now continuous port scanning going on in my node.

    Update 10-28-07
Well I have been using Shaw Internet and Phone in my new apartment for a few months now. Service is working fine.

One MAJOR hiccup though, I was offered extreme for 6 months at the same rate I paid for regular service. after I upgraded very bizarre troubles started my new 10MB/sec Extreme service dropped to 2MB/s almost as soon as they switched me. Even after a tech visit and 2 weeks of allowing the network techs to fix the problem did nothing. My service never rose above 2MB/s. So yesterday I switched back to regular service and was back to 4.5MB/sec after a power cycle. I still have no idea what the problem was and obviously neither does Shaw.

    -------------
I have been using shaw bundle since feb/06. I now have tv, phone and intenet with Shaw. I have had 2 problems in that time, the first visit after the tech replacing a filter, he replaced all the lines inside the house and ran a new drop "because they were looking old"(a nice touch IHMO).

The second visit was due to complaints from the alarm company about quality of phone levels for monitored alarm(alarm company is owned by local telco MTS, go figure they had a problem with Shaw phone). Was offered same day tech call, tech added amplifier to system and raised signal for all tv and internet too. ^^

    update 09-11-06
Tech support like with most ISPs is still hit and miss. The only real problems I have had recently are the result of a fire 2 blocks over burning through the main line last month. There have been a few outages since then related to repairing this.

Paying $150/month(taxes in) for Shaw home internet, Shaw phone and enhanced video with movie channels.

I also made the switch from Telus to Shaw. For my Internet & home phone service.

Everything worked as it should for the first 2 days. On the third day I lost my telephone service. I called customer service to report the problem and request that they fix the problem ASAP. I reported the problem on Friday morning. They where not able to book an appointment to fix the problem until Wednesday.

    --

On Wednesday a technician came out and ended up telling me that line signal is too weak. He had to do something on the main line down the street. After doing this and replacing the filter on the line the service was back up and running.

I did mention to him maybe the line from the street to the house should be changed? He said it was fine. Funny enough the following day someone else from Shaw came to the house and changed the line from the house to the main line on the street.

Everything is working fine now and I do enjoy the faster Internet speed and the features the digital phone has to offer. Such as being able to log onto the web and forward your home phone to another number.

Shaw you must work on your customer service.

    Report on Shaw

Don't know what happened with Shuttle, some people are just unlucky I guess...Shaw's been great with me, customer service is the best I've ever experienced, I have extreme and I'm lovin it, I have had up to 25+mb downloads, but mostly in the 3.5mb/sec to 6mb/s....for 11 bucks (or less) more it's well worth it if you want REAL broadband...

Now if I could only get Shaw to lower their NITRO speed access....$50 is a little steep.

    Same deal here

We have the Shaw 5mb internet here too. A couple months ago I tried upgrading to the faster 10/mb speed and it was the same problem, much slower! The techs could find nothing wrong so I ended up downgrading to the faster 5mb rate.

Shaw customer service has always been good when I call.

No complaints at all, they have been quick to resolve area issues (accidents, storm damage, etc ..) 3 in total in 4+ years at my current residence. Other than the full phone service being a bit high price wise, I am a very satisfied consumer

Shaw has finally fixed the issue and from what I could tell was quite widespread. Happy it's now fixed. Would still recommend Shaw Internet

    Jan 30, 2009
Terrible speeds after 6:00pm weekdays and all day on the weekends. Weekend speeds slower that 500 kb/s dnload. Just brutal.

    **
    Nov 1, 2008
Abismal speeds on Shaw extreme. Getting between 2000-3000 kb/s dl. Took 4 weeks to fix. Did get credit for the period

    **
Aug 15 - Problems with DL speeds in the evenings from 4:00 - 10:00 where getting speeds around 500 K. Very slow.

    ***
Switched from Telus three years ago and was concerend about the possible speed but over te last few years, aside from replacing the Teryon modem at no cost, I am quite happy with the service.

    ***
Moved to a new house and have switched to Shaw. No choice as Telus has no service in my new area.... Totally bizarre that Telus would allow new homes to be built without infrastructure. Oh well, their loss as I can live with shaw.

    ***
Update: All is still well, however, my upstream speed has dropped a "tade". Nothing to worry about though. Experienced one outage Jan 30 but was only for an hour.
    ***

I initially ordered the residential service (1500/512) DSL three years ago from Telus and have been quite happy with it. The speed is great and I can depend on a relativly low latency on the network. Since I use this in my home office to VPN to the corportate network I have come to rely on this service. So far so good!

The only problems I encountered was the May-Aug 2002 time frame where there was a number of problems renewing DHCP. Fortunatly I was able to hard code the IP into my PC until the DHCP problem was fiixed to maintain connectivity. The other problem encountered was with the DNS last week of Oct 2002. The DNS appeared to be incredibly slow and was unable to resolve names for the morning. Fortunatly, I run my own DNS which uses the Telus DNS as forwarding DNS. I removed those entries and Violla everything was fine. I am not sure how long the DNS problem actually was.

Considering I have been in IT for the last 14 years I have excellent technical skills and am able to circumvent some of the problems. However, I would caution anyone who may have problems to be persistent with Technical Support. If you do that, at least you will make them understand your position and maybe take some additional action to fix your problem

Overall, I am quite happy with Telus and will continue to recommend them to my Family, Friends, and co-workers.

Reviewing my time with Shaw over the last year, my area had become congested and it took Shaw close to a year to get around to finally addressing it. Tech service can be inconsistent at times, but generally the people working there seem nice enough.

I tried to get some credit for the time where my internet speeds would drop down to 2-3 Mbit per second, but no go. I would probably think about switching to another provider when I move in a few months, depending on the promotional deals at the time.
