The service was already here when I moved into this apartment. At first we had tons of connection issues. The modem would lose signal and not reconnect for several minutes. This would happen every day, several times a day. It went away, and hasn't happened in a few weeks.

The service has always been slow. We have a 10Mbit connection, and its rare to reach download speeds above 200KB/s anytime apart from 2am - 6am. Then it will download at speeds up to 2.2MB/s (I guess using PowerBoost). Pings during the daytime are also dreadful some of the time. Its just weird because sometimes we'll have amazing speeds and the next minute its slower than dialup. Very inconsistent, and annoying.

I have talked to tech (who btw, are great!) and they said our area of Vancouver is overloaded and that they are probably going to upgrade our area, but they don't have a date yet. They just said probably within the next few months.

For the price ($50 a month), it would be awesome if it worked.

We haven't looked into DSL yet, but if Shaw doesn't get their act together, there will be no other option.

I'm using the Shaw Extreme 10mbit/1mbit package. It's not perfect, but then nothing is.

The order process wasn't particularly painful (although the billing system was) and there were some minor hiccups (too much signal) at the beginning. But these were corrected on the 2nd tech visit. I was lucky to get a 1/2 decent tech on my 2nd go around, the 1st tech was lousy.

I almost always get ~9 mbit/s, although in the last two weeks it's been severely diminished due to some work that they're doing in my area (confirmed with Shaw). But normally it's full speed.

I've only had to call the tech support a couple of times, and they were pretty good (i.e. not a lot of meaningless diagnostics nor jumping through hoops like Rogers). And all of the CSRs were friendly.

Compared to the other providers I've tried (that is, Telus, Bell and Rogers) they're top notch. When I had Rogers in Toronto, it was a nightmare for stability and Telus was a rip off (I was paying approximately the same amount for 1/2 the speed - I had no choice in this case). And Bell, the less said, the better.

    I wholeheartedly recommend Shaw.

I originally attempted to go with DSL service because it's generally a little cheaper only to find out that the shack I live in has wiring problems. Contacted Shaw the same day. Got a special promotional price on their High-Speed Xtreme package for the first 7 months. $30/month for 10M/1M advertised, 100GB cap, regularly about $51.

Seems like they're very busy, though, since they told me it would take 10 days to get a tech out to install. The tech was late by an hour and a half but we plugged in the modem and everything was working within about 5 minutes without problems. A Motorola SB5102 modem is provided as part of the monthly price.

Initial tests are pretty decent. Between 6Mb and 7Mb down and roughly 800Kb down, no packet loss and an average latency of 70ms. Not as impressive as they advertise and probably not worth $50/month, but it will do nicely for the next 7 months.

After 3 days of solid lag free play on Age of Conan, Shaw is now verifiably throttling the server packets in the same manner at BT or P2P packets, with no way to differentiate implemented.

The level 2 tech I spoke to was unresponsive, advising that customers in the area were abusing bandwidth and that they were trying to ensure bandwidth is available for everyone (scripted much?)

Tracert results time out on first hop from modem out and are picked up with 80-90ms latency down the linem regardless of destination IP. Shaw's own website time's out completely after 13 hops.

Level 2 advised operations are "constantly checking infrastructure for congestion" but he has no information regarding whether or not my area has a congestion issue.

I use Teksavvy in Ontario and have NONE of these issues. Should I have access to ADSL in area I will drop Shaw like a rock, because Teksavvy is actively involved in keeping their customers happy.

    very unhappy

The install went without a hitch, plug and play. They hooked me up while I was at work, came home and plugged it in.

Actually bought a kit, with a Motorola modem, which gives me $5 off every month.

The extra $10 for 'extreme' added a speed boost over regular that is very noticeable in gaming and downloading. The huge updates from MS download in a flash. It's actually amazing to watch, having started with a 28.8k modem many moons ago.

Internet access over cable was available in my neighbourhood before DSL from Telus so I chose Rogers Wave in 1997. Rogers Cable subsequently swapped its BC assets for Shaw's Ontario assets and I became a Shaw customer. Rogers@Home service was not very good so I considered adding DSL service from Telus but Telus technicians told me the telephone lines on my block were old and noisy so I did not pursue it any further. Rogers Cable originally supplied a LANCity cable modem in 1997 but a Shaw Cable subcontractor exchanged it for a Terayon cable modem in 2001. I am still using the same Terayon cable modem seven years later. I used to lose Internet access for hours or days at a time with Rogers@Home. When I was a Rogers@Home customer it was frequently necessary to restart the LANCity cable modem by unplugging the power and then plugging it in again to get the cable modem working again. I do not have to do this as often with the seven year old Terayon cable modem supplied by Shaw.

Have you ever requested that you get the new Motorola modem? Chances are this will increase your speeds greatly.

Up to 5 Mbps download speed
Up to 512 Kbps upload speed ------- speeds are close
60 GB/month data transfer --------never came close to using this
10 Personal email accounts ---- one used
    7 No Cost Extras
    Up to two IP addresses**
24/7/365 technical assistance ------ no way usually get a CSR not a Tec

    bundled
Classic Cable ------ all chanels below 13 are snowy, have more then 1 chanel or completely messed up
High Speed Internet ---------- dropped often
    Digital Phone ---------rarely works
$150.00+/month including taxes ------ Never adjusted for any down time like a CSR said it was going to be

I am getting dropped in Edmonton every 5 min to 1hr. Called Shaw they were far less then helpfull. Called 12 times 4 times I got through before my Shaw phone cut out. 3 of the 4 times the phone cut out while talking to them asking the same dumb questions over and over. The 4th time the guy on the other end told me I was calling from a different address .... funny one of the other guys gave me the right address. Anyway I ended up hanging up on him ... he was far less then pleasant. I may end up back with Telus.

This has been going on for over 1 month. We have called from a real land line(telus), they come up with some BS and never come to do a service call. I have used Shaw for the last 4 years never have I been treated like I was today. I used Telus adsl about 5 years ago and never had a problem with CSRs. If there ever was a problem it was fixed PDQ. Really I should not have to go through this for something I am paying for and not receiving. I would be better off with:
    1. a real phone
    2. dial up
    3. basic cable

Most of my Internet is online gaming being dropped every 5min to 1hr is worse then playing with dial up.
