Either it's ignorance or lack of punctuation.

I don't think your complaint has any relevance to how Telus does business. If you have been with Telus for over 6 months, you will be charged $45 to $50 like everyone else if you are using their Extreme service.

The people being charged $35 are on the 6 month promotion before the $50 charge comes into effect. Telus doesn't owe you a refund at all if you have been using their services for over 6 months and just got off the promotion. Get use to it, this goes for anyone that uses their services.

    My Other Reviews·TekSavvy Solutions..
I've used Telus off and on over the years. I've been been very happy with the quality of their connections. Up to last May I had the 3mbps package and Telus TV. However when my contracted year ranout, i bought an HDTV. Telus kept telling me I couldn't get HDTV. Eventually I found out, that because my account was coded as having telus tv, its coded to not allow 6mbps, which disallowed HDTV. Thus I canceled Telus TV and went to shaw for HD. Meanwhile I kept calling to get my 3mbps upgraded 6mbps, but they told me I didn't qualify (yet again because i'd been coded as having telus tv). So I went to teksavvy who could get me 6.0 DSL over the same line. After 90 days, I gave telus a ring, and sure enough I could get 6.0. I set it up so it would get activated the same day my Teksaavy connection was disconnected. It never got connected that day, I called various times to get an update, and every time I called they gave my different deadlines as to when it would be done. Finally called the day after, and the guy didn't even see the order in the system (which means the other 3 reps didn't have a clue). He said I had to wait 15 days for someone to go to the CO and get it connected. Gave me some extra dialup hours and that was it (this was a Saturday, was suppose to be installed on the Friday). After a half hour of mulling over no internet for 2 weeks, I called back and asked for a supervisor. The rep I got that time asked me why, I filled him in. He said 2 weeks was long, and he'd get a supervistor to call me back Monday. He also said he'd look into it and see if he could get it bumped up. Sure enough Monday morning the internet was on. I guess you have to ask for a supervisor. The connection is now running very solid and I'm quite pleased with it. Telus' internet connections are great, but their customer service is the pits. I'm on telus because they're more lenient with caps than shaw, and they don't bog down at dinner time. It's not bad after you survive all the BS of getting it turned on.

I have been a telus adsl customer for 9 years. Started with 1.5 service, and had only a few issues when first installed. I switched to 3 meg service 3 years ago, and had no issues. Getting 6.0 was different experience though. They use a tool they call "Loop Qualification" that based on estimates disqualified my line from 6.0 meg service despite a technician measuring the maximum attainable was over 9 megs using the legacy port that was connected at the other end.

After my tech went to bat for me, he convinced them to change my port to a ADSL 2+ port, and then measured the attainable speed again. My line is capable of 16.9 Megs down, and 1200 up. Armed with this data, my tech was able to get the disqualification over ridden, and now I have super fast ADSL, and have had absolutely no issues with it. Fast and consistent, and blows away my neighbours I originally paid for 1.5 when it was first installed in 1999.

Order Telus HS Enhanced. I received a email telling me that my modem would be mailed to me in 3 days and welcomes me to lite-speed.I call back the next day to make sure that I had order the HS Enhanced and not the lite-speed, they show that I am signed up for Enhanced. On the forth day I still have not received my modem but I am being charged. I called Telus to ask about the modem and the person told me that the modem takes about 10-12 days to show up, he then said he would credit me one week. I finally get the modem after 11 days, hook up goes fine. I test the line it is 1.2megs. I then check my Telus customer service and surprise I have only been signed up normal High speed, of course being the weekend the customer service is closed. So I signed up for Enhanced, was told I lite and ended up with normal.

Update Sept 12 2006 - There have been a few times when the service has been down, 3 times in the last 9 months for about 12 hours combined. This is much better then Shaw where it was down about 6 hours a month. They increased the speed from 2.5 to 3 which can be seen. The best part in the speed is the same all day, until Shaw where it was dial-up speeds during prime time.

Update Feb 17 2007 - The news server have been useless for about 6 months, but the system has only been down for one hour in the last 6 months. The speed is about 2.2 megs on a 3.0 meg line. I do up to 120Gigs a month up and down and have not been contacted. Over all I am happy with the service.

Updated Sept 3 2007: the connection has been cutting out for weeks now, of course when you call to find out what is happening, by the 1-2 hours to get though the connection has been remade and all is fine on their end. The news server are worthless now, mostly incomplete. My speed has dropped to 1.8 mbps on a 3.0 line. When I ask about this slow down they say everything is OK on their end, it must be a problem with my computer. My computer is clean and running fine. My contract with Telus is over in 3 months and I will be going back to shaw.

Updated Sept 2008: Telus no longer supports binary news group, but the connection has been stable and the top speed is 2.9 megs with an average of about 2.3 megs on a 3.0 line. Has not complained that I have been downloading up to 180 gigs a month, this is the main reason I do not switch to Shaw is they download/upload limit

Yup, Shaw sure slows down a lot...

    9700 down and 980 up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Thats over 3 times the speeds you receive from Enhanced.

And 500 kilobits per second making a huge difference? Thats 62.5 kbps, assuming you get it all the time on every server.

I had Telus Enhanced 1.5 years ago when it was 2.5 megabit. I never got higher than 1.3 down, and when I was on regular 1.5 I received 1.1 down.

Actually, shaw does slow down, quite significantly. I subscribed to their service and found that there were huge variances in performance. Furthermore, the modems they used (at that time) were junk. they had an average life span of 8 months. I subscribe to telus HSE At home and Shaw at work.... My home connection if by far faster. I have had 2 systems outages at home in the last 7 months and about 15 at work.

Signed up for TELUS ENHANCED hi-speed internet Feb 4/04,Install went great with hi-speed internet .Telus sent me a 2 WIRE 270 HG-e self install kit with all the goodies to get me hooked up to the internet. Enhanced 3.00 Meg kit packaged with filters, software CD and modem.
Download speeds seem to stay stable any time day or night .
About 2100 to 2200 down and 640 to 675 up.Some things never change
Only weak point is that the 2 WIRE modem/router has be reset several times a day. Called Telus and bitched a bit so they sent a new 2700-HG-E
router/modem and seems to have helped me stay online longer with no need to keep resetting .The phone line filters are a pain in the ass.
Billing is always Months behindand voice menu makes sure to riun your day.
best thing to do is don`t speak and it will hookyou up to a live person.
If your in a hurry forget the stupid voice menu.
the bottom line is that i am fed up with low speeds, lousy voice menus and mediocre support.
    SO GOOD BYE TELUS

Re: Telus dsl will be useless in the future

I guess the implicit suggestion you are making by saying "Telus dsl will be useless in the future" is that TELUS either isn't or won't be upgrading their DSL or infrastructure in the future. I've seen too much talk on the forums about VDSL, bonding, and GPON to believe they aren't doing so. So I think your statement is invalid.

Besides, the CBC writing an article to their left-biased target audience about a study funded Cisco trying to encourage any telco to spend more isn't much in the way of proof.

Original ADSL service was received a long time ago. (2000?) (Used to be on dial-up with Uniserve before.) As I recall there were no problems at the time. It took quite a while between signing up and actually getting service. This was not so bad since ADSL was just being deployed in the area. Price was around $45.00 per month for 1500 down and 512 up. A D-Link modem was supplied with no firewall or router features. Download speeds were around 165 kb/s.

First ADSL problem was frequent disconnects after having the service for about a year. A technician came out and tried to troubleshoot, but was unsuccessful. I did some troubleshooting on my own after he left and was able to repair a poor connection at the wall jack.

Service outages have been very infrequent and always short.

Two years ago, I signed up for a better phone service deal which was bundled with a better price for ADSL. The price of the ADSL service was reduced to $32.00 per month. I also received a 2-Wire modem/router.

On August 29, 2008 while checking my internet account service I noticed that my internet service had a cap listed at 5 GB/month. I checked and found out I could get 3000/640 for $25.95 per month with a 60 GB per month cap. I called Telus and signed up for that. The actual deal is 3000/640 for $32.00 per month. The $25.95 per month is only for new high speed subscribers. Also that comes with a 1 year contract with a penalty for ending it early.

A week later, I finally got the service upgraded to 3000/640. The original order was lost somehow. I suspect I asked too many questions and confused the customer service agent.

This time I called and asked for the upgrade and got a confirmation on price. It sounded like I might get the $25.95 per month deal, but I didn't query further. The service was then upgraded the same day.

    TELUS taking advantage of suckers

The fact that TELUS is already using ADSL2+ technology, but refuses to offer higher speeds (10+ Mbps) at a low price is totally embarassing to the country - some third world countries provide better ADSL service! Yeesh! In addition, there is a rumour that the modems were deliberately configured to prevent anyone from getting access to higher speeds. IMO, this is illegal.

On the other hand, TELUS knows Canadians are complete suckers for spending so much money on things with low value, so screw you.

In today's standard, people should only be paying $15/month for 6 Mbps line. TELUS is screwing the people by a difference of $20. Multiply that amount by millions and that equates to a lot of $$$ stolen by TELUS. Criminals. This is why internet must be nationalized. Free market doesn't work in the long term.

    Peter20000000008

    @telus.net

Telus as overpriced as any other in Canada

As the above poster noted, Canadians are overcharged for their highspeed internet services, and, unlike many other countries, most Canadians have a cap on the amount they can download. Canada also has slower speeds than many other countries as well. CBC did a story on this, you can read it here »www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008···and.html
I'm not sure if this is still the case but South Korea and many other Asian countries had the lowest highspeed internet prices and I think most, if not all, did not have download caps. Ultimately it's just all about money. Canada has maybe 1 or 2 service providers in a given area, and smaller providers, if any, are basically only resellers as they rely on access to lines of the bigger providers. Basically, internet service is monopolized and thus providers charge whatever they want, under whatever conditions they want (ie. download and speed limits, lack of customer service, etc). Not that the public actually cares. This is a country of people that quitely still paid the higher exchange rate price even when the Canadian dollar was on par with, or higher than, the US dollar, and, when asked if it bothered them, said "no, what can you do?"

The below review was before I moved. This is a while later and problems keep piling with no end in sight. I have finally decided to simply switch to SHAW. Latest download speed got as low as 700Kbits/s. Absolutely horrible.

    ___________________________________________________________________________

The service we have is Telus high speed enhanced. On speed.net it averages at 2800kbs down and 350kbs upload.

The install proccess was very quick, but only because we already had connection through them. Delivery of wired/wireless router was about a week late though. The router is a 2wire576. It seems to work just fine, but using the DMZ zone is not recommended as the router will try to change IP address every few days. At which point one has to physically turn off the router for about a minute and then restart it. It can be annoying at times because You never know when it will happen until Your connection simply stops working. The router's software is average. To my preference it isn't as feature filled as it could be, but it is simple enough for an average internet user.

Overall it isn't bad. But limiting actual speeds for download/upload is bad in my view. It is still better than the regular high speed internet. The added extra virus, anti-spam and firewall features are good. The added software for repairing wired/wireless conection works great. It also allows wireless conection to be used without the windows wireless service.

    limiting speed?

If you're on the 3.0 plan your speeds a 100% perfect. The speed is limited by the plan you purchased. You're getting 2.8 on 3.0 which is exactly what you should get factoring in line overhead.

    Re: limiting speed?

Okay then. I will stand corrected. I just assumed that because it is saying that the connection is 100Mbps I thought that's what it should be. Generally I am pretty happy with them. Especially since they do not block my access when I go over the bandwidth. That's probably one complaint I have is that the bandwidth is too low. With todays internet interactivity it should be higher. I own a few websites and have to constantly be uploading new content to them. With that low of a limit I go over it often.

    Re: limiting speed?

The 100 Mbps that you see is the connection from your computer to your router.. not to the internet. I don't dis-agree with the limit being low however while it is being monitored Telus is still very lenient with people who go over. As long as you're not hitting like 300% you should be fine (for now)

    My Other Reviews·Shaw
I was a long time loyal Telus customer. I had dialup through Telus and was an early adopter of adsl when it became available in my area. I chose adsl because in theory it would be faster than cable ('no shared connection")

I would have days to weeks of no connection. The issues were never properly resolved and the support staff (in call centres somewhere far far away) were less knowledgeable than I was, and would suggest that I needed a new motherboard...VERY frustrating and never able to help.

I changed to Shaw cable ultra highspeed and have been very happy with service, connection and speed.

I recently found that they have been over charging me.
They will work at helping you but if they do or not its a roll of the dice.
They have great e-fix programs that come with their package.
The system is stable unless they are working on the lines.
The new web mail upgrade is a joke, the links don't display, the mail pages don't display correctly if they do at all, and all they say is that they will look into it. mean while the classic web mail is still to be removed on Oct.1/08
The company is so big that to talk to them is a waste of time, they don't hear the concerns of the other departments and help each other.

I don't see it getting better but I don't see a better provider

Its been two weeks waiting for the Extreme package which is the one i have been paying for for the past year, if that makes any sense

To up date my prev post.

I called Telus after my prev post and thought it was only fair to repost what happened.
I phoned the internet tech agent.
After the automated bull and getting him.
He was very polite and professional.
he could not see the problem but agreed that my reported test of 1986 mbps was way to slow.
He requested that I perform a test on the Telus site here
    »speedtest.telushosting.com/

The transfer rate was only in the 267.
He said that it should be over 500 and he was going to dispatch a tech to my area and inspect the phone lines on the house and that they would find the problem and fix it.
I called the tech while I held and confirmed that they would be out later today.

I will update this post after the repairs.

Well the telus tech showed up. removed all the filters from our phones, installed a wilcom DSL pots splitter then still couldn't get more then 2500kb/s. he contacted the local shop and found that someone had switched the wires at one of the junctions down the street. He went down and had me do the test again.

My download went to 5000kb/s but settled back to 4083kb/s

My down load time at the telus site increased to 630kb/sec

I performed the test again and it didn't drop so much this time

In response to the "there is no better provider", it is TELUS' fault. They are monopolizing the ADSL industry and clearly colluding with Bell Canada (eastern Canada) to prevent the possibility of other ADSL carriers of entering the market.

Although not relevant, bear in mind that virtually all the industries are deregulated. This is a scheme to ensure their monopoly holds.

They only have a monopoly because no one else is going to shell out the cash to lay down all that copper. Thats why almost everywhere in north america its cable vs. dsl. Then you also have the resellers in, who at the least still have to use the phone/cable companies lines.

You'll never get real competition because the cost of laying all the copper is too expensive.
