I am using the Motorola Surfboard 4200 connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 4 port router. The service works on dynamic IP. There is 1 main account that is created during signup and this account is permitted to set up 4 sub accounts for email. There is no personal web space - that's a bummer. Also, there is no dialup backup provided - if the service goes out, 'you ain't got nothing!' - keep the dialup modem attached and get yourself a NetZero account just in case it does go out for any length of time.

Mail is absolute trash - they have a spam blocker, but I still get lots of spam. You don't get to see the spam that they block as mail that is identified as spam is just deleted. I know that I had mail sent to me that never reached my account. Did the spam blocker delete it? I'll never know.

OOL & Silver for 3 tv's no other extras is over $130.00 per month! I never thought I would be paying so much for TV and Internet! I do not know if there is a real option.

OK i will make this short , i had earthlink dsl for over 3 years and before that i had bellatlantic DSL. I love DSL and i will always love it , why . after having cable for 2 weeks my service was capped , when i called to find out i was told that i uploaded too much ( i have imesh running 24/7 on 1 machine). I was told i had a sustained upload and that if i have sustained uploads then i will be caped and if i dont stop uploading my service will be terminated. OMG cable sucks , i feel like ive lost all my rights as a customer, i feel like i am being dictated to, this is something huge that they fail to mention to you while they sign you up over the phone . Then the customer service guy was rude , telling me if i dont like it then go get something else , Unfortunately i couldnt because DSL isnt aviable where i moved to. the price is high , the company is arregant and they force you to stop all the things you love to do on DSL. With DSL i had 5 computers all of them running either imesh or Kazaa , downloading Anime , i had great speed on all of them and i had a low ping on all my MMPORPG, i had wonderful email and newsgroup access. I lost all of that because i moved and i am now stuck with this crap that is cable broadband ( they advertise 100 times faster than dialup , but they dont advertised that its also 100 times more restricted).

Update: I have been capped for the second time , i havent used any P2P , i have been ultra conservative with my connection, and once again the bandwith people( ones who uncap your service) are scolding me like i am a little child and not a customer. I am getting caped and i dont know why , its not far , i pay my bill , why cap me . If i break the law and i get ticketed or fined i am told why , and those laws are written, they arent some randomly changing rules that no one knows about. I Really Hate this service. and before you jump on me i am in a high traffic area. so dont tell me how many years you have been using OOL and havent been caped, if your in a low traffice area.

4/24/06.

I feel the same way i did before all this time with this company. OOL Sucks, Get something better like DSL. If your lucky get FIOS.

The DNS servers seem to be shaky (depending on the ones you're assigned), the Usenet news servers are virtually useless, and I've heard so many horror stories about the mail servers that I'm glad I never had to rely on them (except for outgoing mail, since they don't allow relaying).

In the end, if you just need the pipes it's not a bad deal if you already have cable TV, your own domain name so you can use your own mail servers, and you don't rely solely on Usenet for information. I ended up bypassing their DNS setup completely, so I'm literally only paying for the high speed connection.

And even though OOL is slowly raising their rates, it's still cheaper that dealing with Verizon and having a T1 installed.

BTW, to get around the DNS problem, check out TreeWalk DNS at »ntcanuck.com.

The price of this service is just way too much.

If they have created a hugh monster that has to be fed tons of cash then they didn't plan too well and the damn thing is hungry again.

As with most people here in Long Island, the choices are few, and beleive it or not, most of the other broadband service providers don't have their act together.

So yes, they do have a good service for the average user, however, it is way overpriced for what you really get.

The equipment has works flawlessly.

But I started at 39.00 a month, now im paying 49.99 a month, and I only get $5.00 off if I take their cable TV service. (which I don't have)
So I'd be paying about $150.00 a month for the privledge to have that wire connected to my home providing TV, and Internet.
I can't wait to have it removed.

OOL does not want binary users of any kind on their network. The technical support people are entirely clueless and the services have degraded while prices have risen 70%! Between the really slow speeds and the constant server downtime it's become all too obvious that CV is hoping that the NG users will all just give up and go away. I remember when the techs updated our modem firmware and they were proud to get us blazing download speeds and now they're forced to watch it all fall apart. How sad. Let me ask you this, what is the point of broadband if you can't use it to download? Certainly not to read e-mail! After the news server is dead what's next, streaming media, jpegs in excess of 50k, mail attachments, it all starts somewhere.
