"Beats the "Tar" out of Verizon DSL!"
"Merger with Time Warner is confusing and not finding "Adelphia Kits""

Switched to Adelphia Cable from Verizon DSL because of continued slowing down of service - our phone line is at the end of a branch and Verizon never would upgrade it after many requests. The Adelphia Customer Service area is still under day-to-day changes because of the merger with Time Warner, but still got things set up okay with "at least" promises on pricing -"less than $42.95 after 3 months" -- and special signup pricing - "no more than $29.95 for at least 3 months". Had a service tech out the next day to install with no charge and the tech also upgraded some splitters which improved TV too! NO CONNECTION CHARGES!! Once on-line, there was a marked difference in speed!!! We went from 1.5 Mbps down and 128 Kbps up with DSL to 4.0 Mbps down and 384k up with Cable. No software changes were required as the cable is also DHCP IP. Constantly getting 4.0 to 4.5+ down and 400 to 440's up!!!!! Well worth the switch!!!! If buying your own cable modem Circuit City has returned all "Adelphia Kits" to Adelphia because of the merger. Best Buy not only has the "Adelphia Kits" - not really needed as software is downloaded from the Adelphia site - but also has the best prices on compatible modems. Just download or print the specifications from the Adelphia website and take them with you to Best Buy. A $100 modem is not needed - the $30 one works just fine!!!

"Speeds have gotten a tad more consistent."
"Pings still suck as rule"
"If you can get DSL, then do so."

I don't have much choice where I happen to live. Can't get DSL. I've been with Adelphia for a little over 3 years (since they first started offering it here). At first it was nightmare. Speeds not even close to advertised, pings all over the place, our local "techs" normal cable guys that come out to run a speed test and tell you everything on their end is fine and it must be you, etc. Well, I do have some inkling of what I am talking about so that didn't fly. I initially had cable as well and paid about $112 for TV and internet service. Then about two years ago I dropped the TV part and went to Direct which made only the internet side about $70 (advertised as 768 up 6m down), but even with Direct I pay about $10 more than I was and get about three times as many channels and actually get stuff I watch. Anyway, I digress.
I must say that within the last 6 months or so, my up and down speeds have gotten more consistent (avg around 4.5down and 800+ up but I seem to be the exception based on other local tests and talking with several friends that have cable), but pings are still all over the place. My recommendation is to go with Verizon if you can.
I do hold out hope that once Comcast takes over they will improve things (have heard good things from friends that have Comcast), but I am not holding my breath. I guess what really got me with Adelphia was I went to the local office back when I TV service and asked for a box with at least s-video and some form of digital audio out. I checked on this twice, the first answer was a blank stare from rep and a stuttering answer of "What is that?" (no luck trying to explain that). The second time the answer was "Our network does not support that." Huh?! I've talked to friend that recently signed up for cable and their new boxes do have s-video and optical out. The optical out which worked for about 3 months then stopped. Went and traded in the box, again worked for about 3 months. When he took the second box back and inquired, he was told that "Yeah, we turn that off since we don't support it." Again, huh?! You don't support it but it was working just yesterday? Sheesh.

UPDATED 10/14/2006
Network appears to be back in the shape I'd expect it to be. Raisin' me ratings back
UPDATED 9/25/2006
Well, ever since us poor saps in VA began the transition to Comcast/Whoever (we really don't know... at least I dont), connection speeds down and latency up. Theories abound (go see the forum for Adelphia), but the bottom line is that our pristine, wonderful connection has gone to hell. Adelphia (whoever) knows there is an issue, but can't seem to fix it nor tell us what's going on. Sucks to have no other option (satellite.. nopes... been there, done that in a previous and naive lifetime).
Waiting for the FIOS truck to come down the street...
--------- I recently moved back to VA from FL, and cable is the only broadband available in my new house. Satellite (wildblue - noway, directway!) would have been the last resort, so luckily cable was available.
I ordered a few weeks ago, and scheduled an appointment for 12/3. I told them to ensure the tech called me on my cell phone (Verizon wasn't going to be up and running until 12/5), and they agreed.
12/3 came around, and close to 1 hour before my time was up I called them. They told me that the tech and dispatch had called that day, didn't receive an answer, and cancelled on me. They called me at work!
I was fairly frustrated, so I had them escalate it to a supervisor. I will give you ONE GUESS what phone number the supervisor called me back on - yep, my work number, again. Bah - oh well.... rescheduled ...
Finally got it installed a few days later. Once I was up and running, I've been satisifed with the connection itself. Getting the standard 4M/384K package - speeds as advertised.

"Customer since 2001. Until today, blazing fast"
"Occassional DNS problems"
"Was great. Now not so sure."
| |
I have been a customer since Sept 2001. They had problems the first 6 months, but since about March 2002 service has been great. Speeds often at the 3,000 or more level.
Today (9/24) for my first use of the day I got a "can't complete the installation" message. Called Adelphia Customer Service and they couldn't find my account based on my home phone number. Gave them my billing account number; then they found my account but admitted that something had "wiped out my account info". They reset my modem and all seemed to be fine.
One additional anomaly was that after the modem was reset it also detected that I may have a different modem MAC address than they had on file and a dialogue box asked if I had added or switched a modem. I indicated switched since within the past year I had purchased my own modem and returned their "rental" unit.
I am a bit skeptical that "all is well" -- hence the testing and I find I can't get more than 1,200 on downloads and sometimes it is much less than that. Also, for two of three tests my upload was FASTER than my download. As I said, I am skeptical that "all is well". I am definitely not getting the 4,000 speed that the technician told me is their "standard" today.

Other than the fire recently in Cleveland, which resulted in extremely poor upload speeds - now fixed - and whenever they have email server problems, I have been extremely pleased with Adelphia HSI. Only bad mark is for Tech Support, when said fire had occurred in Cleveland, the Techs wouldn't state why my upload speeds were poor. They had stated that it was my Norton firewall - which I didn't believe at all. They should have stated the problem with that fire and that was why the speeds were poor and not give me the old 'Norton firewall is the culprit' routine! Honesty is the best policy in everything, and that includes the reasons - when known - should be stated. My quoted speeds are 3000/256...I have almost always have 3147/256, as per tests at Speakeasy. The price of HSI is bundled with the 'Bronze Advantage Pak (includes Digital Basic) at $31.09...plus the $5.00 modem lease/month. I have had to replace the original Surfboard 3100 only once - 3 years after the original installation...and have another Surfboard3100 from Adelphia. Equipment - eTower633id/256RAM/633MHz/OS=ME/IE6+.
Updated 02-26-2005:
I just had to say that the new updated speed is fantastic!
Updated 09-22-2006: Well, I'm Roadrunner now, per takeover, but still consider it Adelphia. Transition to Roadrunner/TW since takeover - 2 months of horrible slow evening peak hours - worst ever! Tonight my speedtest was 4405/413...pretty good. I won't consider myself a 'Roadrunner' user until I officially am able to get a new email address!

You know, it's really scary when a company can actually make you miss Comcast!!!!!
Last month, in the middle of the day my internet connection and my cable TV just died.
Gone.
I called Adelphia. As usual, even though my connection had been up for a month and there was no Internet indicator lit on the cable modem, they insisted I go through thier, written on the script, tier 1 support where I turn the pc off, connect directly to the cable modem, and watch in awe as it does nothing and they tell me I need a tech to come out.
They tell me they have some dates, (of course all in the middle of the day), and then finally schedule it on Saturday, (it's Monday), after I have the audacity to tell them I actually can't be off an entire day because my cable modem is out.
Saturday comes and the guy is there to fix my cable. Turns out the girl next door just had cable installed. Guess who's cable they cut that day! He puts in a priority ticket because I have no service, but says they need "Miss Utility" to come out first so they know where to dig.
Ok, this blows, but what can I do?
A couple days later another guy from Adelphia shows up. He says he knows where the line is cut and he can fix it. Oh boy...
So he does, but some of the channells look like crap and I never get the better, thicker cable the other guy said was coming. Three days later I come home to find lines painted on my front lawn, seemingly from your friend and mine, "Miss Utility". Adelphia never installs the new line.
So I decide, "Screw it, I'm getting Satellite, (which is another story), and just decide I'll keep my cable internet. Which brings us to yesterday...
I'm at work and I notice my webcam is no longer responding. I call my home number, (VOIP), nothing. I try to connect to my replay units...any of the four units. No response.
I call Adelphia. "No sir there are no outages" I start to feel the acid in my stomach. When I leave work at 4 there is still no response from anything on my home network. I look at the modem at 4:45 when I arrive, no internet connection. I call Adelphia.
I wind up speaking with a woman who I'm sure thinks, fake long press on nails are formalwear. She tells me that there are "multiple minor outages", and if it doesn't work in 24 hours to call. Now I don't know WHAT'S going on so I go next door to my neighbor to see if they have internet. They do.
The saga continues.
8:30 Me without internet is like Jay Leno with no chin. I call adelphia again. I tell the same story.
Guess who gets to get to go through thier, written on the script, tier 1 support where I turn the pc off, connect directly to the cable modem, and watch in awe as it does nothing and they tell me I need a tech to come out again?
"There are no outages in your area."
I get off the phone-after 5 minutes the phone rings. It's Adelphia. Another CSR wants to know if my cable is out. I tell her they both are. "Yes there are some outages in your area." I say, "Well no offense, but who should I believe????"
10:30 PM Internet comes back on. The lining in my stomach is that much thinner...

Windham was finally enabled for PowerLink service in January, 2003, and when I signed up for it, I was activated the same day, but I already had bought a modem and had registered it with the local office a month before my street was completed.
Service has been very good, only issue is the ping times during certain hours of the day (mostly 7-10pm), but even that isn't too bad and it's being dealt with by Adelphia on a national basis, region by region.
UPDATE: As of May 1, something changed and the service is now rock-solid at the 3000/128 range, with 90ms pings to the West coast. Service is now spectacular 24x7 since this change!
UPDATE 2: As of July, 2003, things got even better. The reliability is ROCK SOLID and I'm pinging in the low 50s/high 40s to the West coast now. Speed is still in the 3MBit/sec range, and it hasn't gone down once -- not ONCE -- since then.
THANK YOU, Adelphia!
Adelphia is really trying hard to improve the quality of their service and it shows. The CSRs have all been courteous, helpful, knowledgeable and I've been able to get help 24x7 with no unnecessarily long hold times.
I'm getting roughly 3000/128 service for $49/mo and I'm happy.
UPDATE 3: As of 11/03, the new tiers took effect in my area. I am now at 3000/256, rock solid, looking great.
UPDATE 4: As of 9/06, I'm testing out at about 4000/256. The service has been stable and fast, with low ping times to the servers I use. Price is the same. I am still very pleased with the service, so much so that we'll probably be dumping DirecTV and moving all our TV service to Adelphia as well. No problems here.

Since I joined Adelphia 6 years ago in my area, the speed issues and relieability have drastically improved. I rarely get intteruption in service here (the last time I actually lost service was due to a tree knocking out cable in the area). I just upgraded to Adelphia HSI Premier service (6000/768) and am not receiving anywhere near the d/l speeds I am paying for. Feel free to check my speed test results. You'll see that I'm only acquiring 3500+ d/l speeds. I'm looking into possible internal equipment issues, although I think this degradation in speed is due to my rural location and signal loss. Other than that, I am overall happy with the high speed internet service that Adelphia (local cable co=Tele-Media) provides.

I've had Adelphia for upwards of 18 months. Up till March of this year everything was great, only had to have them out once, and the service call was handled in a timely fashion (IIRC)
Since March, which coincendentlly is when they upgraded their service to 4 mbps down, I have had nothing but trouble.
First it was the DNS issues, i.e. not finding the website, and then timing out.
Of course since the D/L speed and ping times were good, they couldn't do anything as nothing was wrong. I fixed the issue myself by adding a few entries into the registry.
Beginning in August 2005, I have been experiencing erratic D/L speeds, high ping times and packet loss. They have also been doing a lot of work on the servers, with higher than normal downtime.
When calling tech support, wait times used to be reasonable, now you can expect 15 minutes plus (even late night!). Forget getting a tech out to the house: my 1st appointment in August was 8 days out. The system fixed itself so it was cancelled. The problem reoccured Aug 31st and the appointment was scheduled for the 13th of Sept: 13 days!
Apparently very understaffed and have over taxed the network with the upgrade:if this doesn't get fixed with this appointment, Qwest DSL (which I had previously and had no problems with except for the speed) will be getting my business again.
Update 06 Sept 06
Ok so it's been a while.
Service finally improved late last year (2005) and has been steadily getting better.
Sustainable D/L speeds have averaged 4 mbps with spike D/L of over 5 mbps for upwards of 30 seconds (hey got think positive)
The wait times for tech support are still unbearable, (for the few times I needed to check the system status after a storm) and actually have increased to an average of 30 minutes. The online chat tech support is a joke with wait times recorded in hours.
Finally this system is in transition, with Comcast taking over this Adelphia system. No timetable has been set that I know of for when the Intenet sevice will change but it ought to be interesting.

I ordered Adelphia HSI using their website prior to my move to Mt. Airy, MD. The website was pretty straightforward. I also received a few phone calls to confirm the appointment I scheduled.
To my amazement, the technician actually arrived right at the beginning of thr 4pm-6pm service window. Not only that, the technician was able to determine which of the mess of coaxial cables running into my home was the correct one. The total service appointment took about a half hour and I was up and running immediately afterwards.
