I have now been changed over to Comcast, but I had the Adelphia Bronze AdvantagePak (adds HSI 4000/384) for total of $ 44.95 a month.I did the self install from the kit I got at the local office.
Install was easy and the service was always fast and very reliable, for the 3 years Adelphia was my provider.Only times I had any extended outage is when we got hit with hurricanes in 2004 and 2005,this was directly related to power outages. At the time I changed over from Bellsouth to Adelphia in March of 2004, Adelphia speeds at that time were 3000/256, but still faster than my former Bellsouth's 256/1500 DSL top plan, at that time. Adelphia was about $10 a month cheaper than the DSL also.I hope all stays the same with the Comcast transition.

    My Other Reviews·AT&T Southeast
    ·Comcast
I have used Adelphia HSI for 5 months. When I found it was available in my area, I ordered the service, bundled with expanded basic cable, and even went to the Adelphia Office near me to pick up the cable modem and I was up and running the SAME DAY.

I literally plugged it in, installed their software and have not had to even think about it ever since, until I decided to write this review. There has been Zer0 down time. The first 3 months were $25/month, but there was no contract period, meaning I could cancel at any time.

I rented the cable modem for $5/month, which is very cost effective given how quickly they can go bad. I can just go trade one in if it goes bad. Average Life Expectancy for a cable modem is less than one year, so that ($60) beats paying $100-$150 for the equipment, and maybe having to replace it every year. .

    [UpDate]

The transition to Comcast has been smooth, and Comcast recently doubled my download speed. Thankfully, I have never called Tech Support. Connection Reliability has been 99.99% Overall. Not much else to report, I hardly ever think about it...

6/28/04 I finally get to order high speed internet. I go to my local adelphia office and place my order because i didn't have cable ever they had to build me in the computer so i ordered and they told me it would get installed wendsday.

6/30/04 I had to go to work so I left instructions with my neighbor on where i wanted the cable run and what rooms was to get installed the tech told my neighbor that he was supposed to run the cable into the house but not install my modem because as a tech support person I wanted to do that myself the tech said he was there just to run a new cable well he installed cables but run them into the house through my window that had the ac in it he told my neighbor because I was not there that he could not drill holes in the house. when I got home from work I hooked up my webstar modem and was after a quick set up of my service i was browsing at 2.4 megs i tried to send a photo through email and it wouldn't send so I tested the upload and I was getting 40 kbps upload the download is wonderful

I will switch my modem tomorrow for a motorola brand that is better so hopefully my upload will speed up after I install my router I'll post again

    7/5/04

After installing the new Modem My upload speed jumped to 250 kbps and my download stayed right where it was even after I connected my router and my wife got on the laptop my speeds still stayed arount the 2.4 meg mark I am very happy with my service by far

7/7/04 After 1 week of service i am very happy with it and i am glad that I ordered it i don't have no outages and my speed is still a very steady 2.4 megs on multiple test sites

11/23/05 I've had the service for over a year now I upgraded to premier in January and had 4 months of troubles I do not think the lines were good enough for that so finally in May i downgraded back to standard high speed and i've not had a problem one since i did that. I constantly am browsing at 3.5 and above and 500+ kbps upload I am extremely happy

04/22/07 well it seems that the move over to Comcast is about halfway done I got a pleasant surprise after my internet going down for 15 minutes(first time over a year that my signal had been lost-called Comcast they were upgrading networks) i noticed that browsing was faster and that uploads were quicker so i ran a speedtest i was so surprised with the results 13 MB downstream/1MB upstream I am very happy with this

I first signed up with Adelphia in June 2003 as it was the first broadband service, other than satellite, to reach my house. I started out with 3000/128 for $54.95/month (leased modem, no cable TV) but it was upgraded a few months later to 3000/256. I was out of town during the installation so I can't rate that part but when I got back home, everything was working fine. Everything went smoothly for the first few months with the occasional connection hiccup but that usually fixed itself after a couple of minutes. Once I switched over from USB to Ethernet, my speeds went up by about 75-90 KB/sec (from about 225 KB/sec) and I got a further boost (to full 3 megabit) when I built a new computer in August 2003.

My first big problem with the service was during Februrary 2004, in which my connection would die every 1-3 days, sometimes multiple times per day. It did it for just about the whole month but it finally stopped by March. I never did find out what the problem was but it never reoccured so I guess it doesn't matter :P.

Around September 2004 or so, I found out about the Premier package, which boosted speeds to 4000/512 for just an additional $5 or so. I was mainly interested in just the upload because I tend to upload big files, like video clips and such. When I stopped by the local office to ask them about it, they told me that it was still in its early stages and it probably wouldn't go full speed but that I was welcome to try it out myself (some of the other employees didn't even know about it). They also said that I could try it out for a week and cancel it without being charged for it. I decided to go ahead and do it, which they then told me it would take about 10 minutes or so to update my modem for the speeds. When I got home 2 hours later, I was shocked to see that my speeds dropped from 3000/256 to about 750/180. I decided to let it go for a few more days to see if it would work itself out but at the end of the week, it only managed to increase to about 2800/225. I went ahead and canceled the Premier speeds and went on my way with good ol' 3000/256. A nice surprise with the whole ordeal was that I had signed up for the speed long enough to get the $26.95 deal for 6 months .

At about March 2005 or so, I got a notice in the mail that Adelphia was upgrading the speed for the basic plan from 3000/256 to 4000/384 and the Premier package from 4000/512 to 6000/768. I decided to go ahead and give it another shot since I figured that if they're able to up the speeds across the board, I should be able to get somewhere near Premier speeds without a problem. I went back to the office and told them I wanted to sign up for it again, and when I got home, I was getting exactly the same speeds I got before I signed up. I decided that this time I wasn't going to give up on it so I called the office and told them what was happening. They sent out a tech a couple of days later who inspected my modem and line. Come to find out, the people at the office didn't update my modem to take advantage of the speed. One phone call to the higher ups and 5 minutes later, I was flying along at ~6700/856 . Ever since then, I've been getting pretty much the exact same speed, which the tech thought was unusual (he said that no one else in the area gets the rated speeds, let alone exceeds them).

Pings are pretty reasonable. I average around 35 ms between Yahoo and Google and games are anywhere from 12 to 85, depending on where the server is located. The modem that Adelphia leased to me is a Terayon TJ715. It works pretty well; the only complaint I have about it is that it doesn't have a power/reset switch. I have to pull the power cord out of the modem to reset it, which has worn out the input a little bit .

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the service. There isn't much downtime, the stuff works, and it's fast. What more would you want?

Update: Swapped out the Terayon for a Motorola SB5101 a few months ago, speeds increased a tiny bit occasionally, but was mostly the same. The modem ran a lot cooler though . I bought a Linksys BEFCMU10 ver. 4 today (1-4-06) so that I wouldn't have to rent a modem any longer. So far, downstream speeds have dropped a little bit, to ~6300 Kbps, but I rarely download anything so I'm not too concerned with that. I like how the modem has the big feet on it so I can stack it on other equipment while leaving room for adequate ventilation .

Update 4-22-2007: We switched over to Comcast a couple of weeks ago, upload speeds have dropped about 15 KB/sec (6600/768 config vs old 7235/926 config), download speeds and consistency have gone up somewhat. PowerBoost was temporarily working at up to 13 Mbps, but it seems to have stopped working now. Linksys BEFCMU10 modems and Comcast don't seem to get along too well, I recommend using a Motorola SB5100/5101.

I've had Adelphia PowerLink for the past few months, but needed to move it to another part of town, from an apartment to a new house I bought.

The only major problem with this whole thing was the timing. I was trying to get the installation coordinated with the departure of the former owner, and the disconnection of her cable TV service. Unfortunately, Adelphia would not even APPROACH the subject until her disconnect date! I was trying to set this up on the 8th of December or so...that date was the 19th (and my move-in date here was the 17th).

Fast forward to the 19th. They'll now talk to me, but say they can't set up a service call until the day they actually take OUT her service, the 31st!

A bit of loud bleating on my part, and I finally convinced them to come out the earliest day they could, the 30th. This was an improvement, since they weren't going to even set up the date till the 31st before. The former owner only had "Broadcast Basic" service, and they had a trap physically on her line, so there was no way I could get PowerLink until that was removed.

The installer came the afternoon of the 30th. This must be the one clueful, good cable installer in America. He not only fixed a signal problem with the second hookup - the previous installers had driven a carpet tack right into the cable - and added a third outlet, but he installed PowerLink with no muss and no fuss.

They've apparently improved the speed of PowerLink recently. I'm getting nearly 3 Mbps downstream and 256 upstream. It seems faster than my old installation across town...maybe I have a better signal. My VoIP phone (Vonage reseller) works better and has no dropouts.

It's a tad on the expensive side for cable modems...$54.95/mo...but worth it for the speed and performance. I'm quite happy...and this is a guy who was upset because I was still in Adelphia territory. (The Akron area is primarily a Time Warner area, but parts of the area west and northwest of Akron are Adelphia... due to their purchase of the old Cablevision/Cleveland system. TWC never wired these areas before Cablevision came in.)

    UPDATED 4/7/07

Well, we've now migrated over to Roadrunner, officially.

It happened a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday morning - and when my cable modem service went out, I didn't know that was what was going on! I called TWC, and they didn't know, either

But it was only about 15-20 minutes after a reboot of my cable modem. I noticed logging into a remote computer via LogMeIn.com that my IP address had changed, and was now a TWC/RR address. That's when I figured out what was going on.

My service has been very reliable, aside from very occasional (once every few months) late night problems that could probably be attributed to scheduled maintenance.

Service seems about as fast as it was with Adelphia.

The only glitch would appear to be that the Adelphia Usenet newsgroup servers no longer work, though the online migration info continues to show "news.adelphia.net" as the server for former Adelphia customers.

It recommends the rr.com server for new Usenet users, and I plugged that in, and it works fine.

The transition to comcast has not really taken hold here yet, but we were informed of it by the technician and more obvious the work order and bills that say comcast, but we still deal with adelphia cust service and so on...

Originally the install was good and everything seemed to be working ok when the tech left, but about 3 hours later the service just occasionally quit working for a few minutes to an hour or so at a time at least 2 times a day... I called tech support on 2/8/07 and was told that the signal to the modem was ok so it had to be a bad modem.... tech came for service call and says the modem is ok (because the new modem wouldn't connect) that the tap is causing the problem and would call for service... Quite a few calls and about a month later this problem is still the same and the dropouts are getting more frequent and for longer... I talked to tech support today and they have finally taken the entire 360 in saying that the modem is bad and they have no info on tap service but they know it was not completed and a tech will be out tomorrow 3-9-07 to swap my modem....

Anyways, we ordered the 4mb/384k for 23.95 for 3 months and 47.95 after as we don't have cable tv service with them... When it is up and running we have speeds as advertised and it works great...

As long as your not in a rural area and get forgot about, the service overall is pretty good... The tech support and customer service, etc. really do try to help and have so far tried to do as much as they can over the phone. As far as I understand they are trying to upgrade to digital cable here so that could be part of the problem... I will update after my problems are fixed if that happens

I would say that Adelphia has been up more than 95% these last two years, the speed is better than I had wiith Bellsouth ADSL, and cheaper. for me.

After 4 years at this location (Boynton Beach, Fl.) Adelphia did a wonderful job, maybe a 5 hour outage every 2 or 4 months. Over 99% reliable here. They applied credit for the only major outage.

Voip has been generally good over this network.

I hope now that Comcast is in charge things get only better. I still have 4300-4500 down and 444 up.

    Feb. 2007--

Well, comcast took over. Joy. I've had Vonage for a few months now, and when the system was still under Adelphia's name, never had a problem with it. Now with the Comcast name on it, connection drops out usually once a day during the afternoon, sometimes more. Lasts 5-10 minutes. And with my vonage, I can hear people just fine, but people can barely here me at all. Very annoying I must say, hopefully things will get better as time progresses. Still on the same speed (4/384) but only getting around 3 to 3.3 Mbps down and 300-320 Kbps up. Hopefully Comcast will get the speeds up to what they should be for their standard tier(6/384 I believe???) and hopefully the connection will start to stay more reliable. Overall, a fairly painless switch, although I lost my old 24.xx.xx.xx IP address which I was rather fond of(for gaming). Still a pretty decent value. I really just hope for Powerboost(Permaboost anyone) soon. Note: Price is for Internet AND tv with hbo and starz.

    Third Update:

Just moved and we had absolutely 0 pains moving. However, after we moved, we got a very bad rain storm from Hurricane Dennis or what was left of it. Something happened at our tap that our Power Level surged horribly, it was running at 61dB's which is what my modem (Moto SurfBoard 5100) can handle.

Called support, got the standard questions and blah blah, power cycle etc... didn't work so the scheduled a truck roll. Technician arrived, replaced all the lines coming from the tap, power level down to 58dB's said that is better but still not good, but there is nothing more I can do for you since its your modem. Alright, at least I don't have to worry about drops anymore.

Another rain storm came through, knocked out the modem again. Called support and another truck roll was scheduled. Technician came out, said let me take your modem and check out on the line(on the pole) power level was 53dB's at the pole! Said there is something majorly wrong, so he went down the street and checked the tap on another pole, said it was 41 down there, so he called a Linesman to come out. Linesman arrived 15 minutes later(not bad if I must say) and replaced the line from the pole down the street to my pole. Power level was then a 41 at our pole too and a 53 at our modem. Amazing job adelphia!

I dropped services to a 4 because when I called, the CSR noticed I had 2 modems provisioned which I find out would be another $36/month. I said we have to do it that way since our house we moved into has 3/4" steel plates in between every wall so our wireless router won't work. So he de-provisioned the other modem, so I went out and bought a 24 volt drill with a steel attachment and drilled through all the walls to our router and ordered a cat 5 cable.

All in all I am very satisfied still, but I wish the upload was higher. I am looking into Verizon DSL, because I am roughly 2000-2500 feet from CO as far as I know so I may run it side by side for a month and see how they stack up. But Adelphia has been very good to me for 1 year.

    Second Update:

I dropped the connection reliability since it has been cutting out on me during the early afternoon lately( around 1-3PM) im guessing that this is due to the upgrade of the system to handle the 'Extreme' tier speeds since the same thiong happened to the TV(it cut out) when they were preparing our system for Internet.

Just wanted to update since I recently moved. Adelphia gave us an all-day appointment(8am-5pm) for a hook-up, guy showed up around 10:30-11 and hooked us up on the pole outside and had sync on the modem instantly(well not instantly but pretty fast). I've heard horror stories about moving you and your internet with you so thanks to Adelphia for not doing that to us. I hope things stay as good when Comcast takes over the system....

    First Update:

Since original review in August 04 I have had 1 outage which lasted roughly 20 minutes so kudos for their tech team for fixing the problem so fast. Since they upgraded the speed to 4/384 for the Basic service my speeds have been about 4.2-4.5 mbps down and around 512 up so I am happy about that. Every time I have had a problem with my connection their tech support was top notch, even Tier 1. I highly recommend Adelphia as an ISP to anyone who is looking for speed and reliability, but beware of about 40ms pings but that isn't too bad. Price is still 29.95 month./

The service is now Time Warner Roadrunner. DHCP sucks, would rather have static ip, but thats the way of the future now for cable and phone company ISP's. Speed is very good, uptime is fairly good too, once in awhile some idiot cuts the cable in the region and the connection has gone dead for over 10 hours.
