after 4 hours on the phone with AT&T roadrunner out of richmond virginia, they cant figure out why the modem wont download.... so they are resolving it by sending someone.... 2weeks from talking to the tech support, three weeks from instalation, i MIGHT, if the tech knows what he is doing get to download... just to make sure it wasnt my settings (and hoping it was) i formatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything.... still no download.... there are a couple of sites, in which downloads will start but at 1-200bps.... not kbps....the techs dont understand and none of them seem competant enough to help... they have a troubleshooting guide, and so they walk me through a list of things to do, one of which is "download this tweak' when i explained that i cant download it (again) and asked what it did, it only changed the rwin value...i asked the tech if he knew what that was and he said "it says here, it makes the recieve window bigger" so i asked if he knew what that was, and he said "the window that pops up when you start to download....i guess"

maybe if my rwin value wasnt set reasonably i could understand... its set to 32120....the program sets it to 65350..... so i did this manually, which he told me was unwise.... *isnt this what your program was going to do"..."but you cant change the registry yourself"....

changing the value presented no change what so ever....

but he says my cable modem is "fine" because he pings it with no lost packets

tell me... do the tech support people actually USE computers.... or do they just get brainwashed into answering the most common questions....

i propose all tech desks be supplied with a button which sayz... press 1 if you are a computer user.....press 2 if you are a computer enthusiast and are baffled by a current problem....

that way i wont have to talk to some high school student who got into tech support because he could play his "game-boy color" while he was working.... (i heard the music)

i am sure roadrunner service is great... and im positive this is a rare problem ... the service surfs through the web like butter.... but i cant really give it a rating until i can download...and thats still a week away.....maybe

I have had RoadRunner here in Norman Oklahoma for the past year. When it was installed it was GREAT. I was getting 500KB/s down and around 50KB/s up. The guy who sold me the service said that there were no caps and that they were not going to cap the service. Then in January of 2000 it all changed. This is where the HOROR that is COX starts.

Multimedia Cable was bought buy Cox here in Oklahoma and RoadRunner had a 3 year contract with Multimedia so Cox took that over. Since then our service has been capped 3 diffrent times. In one year my service has dropped to 100KB/s down and 15-20 kbps without a reduction in rate and with little or no notification.

Since January of 2000 i have had 26 service calls. The Tech's have been on time and told me that my speed would be back to the rate at which i bought. It never got back. Never call them either. You'll be on hold for an average of 45 mins. My services (E-mail and news server) are always slow or down and when i post to the local news group i am told by the director or Cox@home for Oklahoma, man i wish i could say his name, that i " Like to gripe " and that nothing is wrong. Then when there is a MAJOR problem the people at COX tell us that it is always RoadRunners fault.

So if you live in Oklahoma DONT GET @Home or RoadRunner because its not worth all the cash.

Past user of Bellsouth DSL but switched because of price. Earth link dial up is faster and more reliable. Will switch back when price goes back up.

At time of install, RoadRunner was running consistent 1600Kbps. Over T-1 Speeds!
Now the speeds run from 2000Kbps to 100Kbps in a half hour period.
Can you say, "the return of modem speeds?"
I am very unhappy with this as they say they will "look into this" and "look into that" without ever calling me to tell me they will fix something. Ingorance must be bliss.. Until that time, I wait for another answer for high speed connectivity.

I have had Road Runner since beta. No problems til August. They found

bad feeder lines to the tap. I was having big problems and they said

they would have to replace feeders to correct the problem. They have sent crews out to replace the modem and they didnt know ho to put in a Toshiba modem. To run a separate cable line to the modem that was never done. I have not heard from anyone from Time Warner for 3 month's about this issue.Last I heard I was on the construction list.

My god what a horror story. Cable dude from hell Installed my modem and sent me to the toaster site,(which is bogus) and tested the speed. It said I was around 900kbps. Well as I said bogus. Went to msn site and tested and I was about 500kbps. Still thinking, hmm maybe some tweaks yet. Well around 5pm, AAAK. I was under 200kbps and "Too Far In Cyberspace" to play any games at a site I go to www.mplayer.com. (Tried with 56k modem and was 88% Excellent and 12 good). I ordered this service because I was told I would get 1.5mbps. I mentioned the problem with the traffic and they said they corrected the problem. Well they totally lied to me.

Phoned RR and after pressing about 30 buttons and then waiting for 45 min. I get an answer "well 200 kbps is good". I ask that a service dude come out and look at the blasted cables. Guy says he is sending someone on a Monday, gives me date and time, well no show. Call cable people from hell again and tell them to get nasty service out of my house. It took them two weeks and they tried to bill me for the parts I returned. Heh heh, I had the cable pick-up dude sign a paper saying he picked up all the parts. Cable people are not ripping me off. Warning about cable, you are NEVER connecting at the speed you think you are.

Called to have cable modem installed. I frequently to tests of broadband services.
No wait on the phone, rep was nice, but gave almost no details of what the service consisted of. Gave no speed expectations, no services details. Pretty odd.
Installer came about an hour late. (17 days out) He could not load the software on the sys. because of a driver conflict (with the ethernet card). He had no tech support person to call to resolve the issue, so he asked if I knew how to do it. I didn't, so he left. After 3+ hours on hold to reschedule someone to come back out, a supervisor got on the phone and told me it is my responsibility to fix the driver conflict. When I do that "I can call back to reschedule". Gee thanks.

Supervisor contacted me again, and told me to format my hard drive and reload the OS and everything else. I must say, I am not very excited about that prospect.

Got everything up and running. Speeds are average, but not impressive (400/200). I liked my DSL better.

Update Oct 16th

I finally got it up and running, thanks to some helpful insights from DSLR members. Speed is good, about the same as I had with my ADSL. More to come.

Ok...finally done. Speeds average about 10-20% less than my Earthlink DSL....usually around 650K down. Have Norton firewall installed, but hacked twice. Much better than 56K, but I do like DSL better. I am running both to test differences.

Overview: Cable modem service, DHCP issued addresses, no PPOE, Toshiba/3Com cable modems (CoAx in,Ethernet out), overall a BAD experience.

While MediaOne RoadRunner (now AT&T Broadband) usually gives decent throughput (sometimes up to 300Kbyte/Sec), one has to put up with so much other crap that it hardly becomes worth it. For instance...

DNS - I have NEVER had a reverse DNS entry for my MediaOne IP. While this may not be an issue for most, it certainly has been for me (30 second timeout connecting to anything that requires a reverse DNS lookup). I have called them at least 8 times over a period of 6 months (min. 2 hour call each time), have gotten a promise of resolution each time, and low and behold, it was never taken care of. Every other MediaOne network seems to have reverse DNS entries, but not mine...

Latency - A traceroute shows a persistent 250-300ms hop on the Mediaone backbone. I have griped about this too, been made countless promises, and never received any form of resolution/response.

To their credit, MediaOne does make it very easy for one to steal their IP addresses. Officially you're only allocated a single address (or for more $$, up to 3), but with proxy ARP and a static NAT kernel patch on your linux box, theres no limit (Disclaimer - I'm not condoning nor encouraging this type of activity in any way)

All in all, I'm done with these guys, their support is pathetic - while some of them try hard, none of them seem capable of bringing resolution my problems. And when you finally get an opportunity to speak with someone who knows their stuff technically, they are usually unforgivably arrogant. DON'T GO HERE!!

Got then Media One roadrunner in early Feb 2000. Ran great for first 2 months or so. Speeds approaching 3 mbps sometimes. Then as they added customers I assume they added no capacity and everything slowed to a crawl. They added some Servers in April "so they told me" and things improved for a month or so. Its been all downhill since then. I have called Now ATT customer no-service at least 8 times since August. Each call has taken over 2 hours mostly on hold or listening to customer service reps search through pages of manuals to answer rudimentary questions. They have made 2 work orders to check my system and my line. Their technicians say it is a system problem but no one is apparently interested in supplying the service I was promised. Unfortunately dsl is not available to me here as I am too far from central office. If even slow 144kbps dsl was available to me I would drop roadrunner like a a hot potatoe. We like to game but connection is so uneven and lossy that it is usually unusable for that purpose. Slow and consistent is what i would expect from slow dsl, slow kind of stinks but the packet loss and inconsistency of ATT Roadrunner worse than stinks. Try playing capture the flag with enemy and flag carriers appearing and disappearing right in front of your face, very difficult. Suicide is really easy when the screen catches up and jerks 90 degrees as you shoot rockets into it and blow yourself up. ATT can kiss my hiney.

Roadrunner installation was promised in 3 weeks when I signed up. When the time came, the installer never showed up. I had taken a day off from work to be there. When I called, they re-scheduled for 5 weeks out with no apology. They didn't seem to care. I hit the roof and they managed to get someone in a week. Installer was good, efficient. Had the cable modem running in an hour. It worked great for a day then everything fell apart.

A second crew came to bury cable that the first person installed and apparently cut it. Service became unreliable. Called and second installer came, discovered what he thought was a bad cable and replaced it. Didn't fix the problem. Service was unreliable and erratic. Was often very slow, sometimes good. Best dl speeds were about 500k. Typical was more like 200k when it was working at all. Lost service completely for hours at a time, once for two days.

Sometime during all of this AT&T took over. Despite these startup problems, at least people answered the phone befire AT&T, but no more. Wait times for customer support soared. I spent 2.5 HOURS on hold once before hanging up. I cancelled the service by Email and letter with no response after giving up by telephone. The bill came and I didn't pay it, sent another letter instead.

Finally got through by telephone about a month after cancelling and they claimed no record of anything. Cancelled again by phone. It looks like the AT&T buyout sent them down the tubes. I switched to Mindspring DSL and have been very happy with much better reliability, service and speeds.
