Roadrunner has absolutely no compunction about gouging subscribers. Their bills rise monthly. They added on the entire Buffalo-Niagara to an already oversubscribed Rochester->East system, and its slow to non-functional and getting worse. The cheap SOB's bought up Adelphia when they were shut down for their criminality some years back, and things get worse here by the day. I buy 20/1 and mostly dont get more then 4mb down any time. At night when ppl are downloading their Netfliz, I cant even send email. Now their OWN speed figures within THEIR system show plenty speed, but connecting to the real Internet, outside their thiefdom is where they fall flat on their faces. They have little to poor outside connectivity. Plus they now block port 25, without warning, with no monetary relief, like when they shut down newsgroups. They are a criminal enterprise who have bought off the NY Public Service commission with free cable and all services to let them continue to gouge us. If there were ANY competition (and I don't consider Versleazons dsl competition) Id gladly kick them to the curb. WHERE IS SOME COMPETITION??? FIOS abandoned us all after they wired up the rich folks areas, (That's why you absolutely must have must-build rules in a contract with these thieves) These SOB's need a good multibillion dollar lawsuit. There is NO anti-trust law enforced in NY.

When is BBR going to deny these astroturfers access to ISP reviews? They don't even require to have a BBR user to post an ISP review, now they just email it.
Obviously the original poster doesn't even have any type of service from TWC. | |

Roadrunner raises prices monthly, while decreasing services and speeds.
They are so horribly oversubscribed, gaming is impossible from 5PM to 11PM as all the Netflix customers have the pipes clogged.
Speeds inside their system are fine, and as advertised or better, showing the system itself has the internal capacity to provide decent speed. However these cheap bastards have poor connectivity to the real world Internet, where the real measure of thruput becomes the issue. Its because they're cheap and do nothing but line their pockets at customer expense without upgrading their peering capacity (that costs them money).
I'd switch to anything IF it were available, but its not, they have a monopoly in the Buffalo area. I dont even consider VerSleazon's DSL an option, as there's no one there who speaks english, they're dumb as rocks, and even after two years, they couldn't get an email account working after 20 calls.
But this is about the RR thieves, bait and switch, and plain POOR service. Don't buy any higher tier plans, their business class gets worse connections than consumer, because they're spying on all your traffic.
They're the only monopoly game in town and pay off Albany regulators to stay that way.

Switched from AT&T, I couldn't get a line upgrade from DSL pro. Was with them since 1998 Pacbell.net. I have apple TV and three kids that use a lot of wifi bandwidth. They used to have to take turns getting on my 3 down .4 up AT&T line, I heard lots of complaining and arguing.
Its been quiet for three weeks now, so far so good

I was promised that Wideband internet was like business class service where I was guaranteed a specific throughput (ala CIR) rather than sharing the bandwidth with everyone on my trunk. I've have seen speeds approaching the promised 50/5 only rarely and then only during early am hours 3:00 am - 4:30 am and never during normal waking hours. Speeds approaching 50% of what was promised are possible up to 8:00 am or so. Typical speeds during a normal waking person's day can be measured in kbps and not mbps! Still awaiting a silver bullet, this isn't it...

Changed to ATT Uverse when TWC doubled my TV cable cost in December. Uverse is slightly cheaper on TV, slightly more expensive on Internet, Uverse upload speed better.
I had AT&T DSL at 3Mbps, with the promise of Uverse. Alas, AT&T has quit building out Uverse. It stopped about a half mile away (not that Uverse is wonderful, but it is reasonable). I had to deal with AT&T promising the 3Mbps service for 12 months for $14.95/mo, and then not giving it. It took many phone calls. Finally, after I had decided that 4 iPhones, Vonage, Tivo, Netflix, Wii, and VPN to work would not co-exist on 3Mbps, they started to cough up the credits for the $42.95 they were charging me. TWC responded (online, BTW) with a $39.95 turbo boost offer for 12 months since I didn't have service currently (quit to go to AT&T). So, while using up my credit, the Vonage is alone on AT&T and the other stuff is on TWC. TWC is iffy here, as the neighborhood is movie crazy. I figure to go back to AT&T if TWC ups my charges. Then go back when TWC has a good offer for non-customers. It really amazes me how stupid large corporations can be. BTW, note that TWC financed the NC bill to restrict NC municipalities from providing internet service.

completely unreliable speed some times nights slow and other nights. It's very slow. There have been two or three evenings a week that a 600 meg file would take an hour and 10 min. to download.
In the last month and a half. The best download time for the same 600 meg file with. 38 min.that file is tested every Night from three different servers East Coast, West Coast and central USA
And this is with road runner with power boost that I pay extra for!

 | | You're not alone! I have TW cable in LA and have the same problems. Unless you're savvy enough to measure your speed, TW could care less about you until you complain. I pay for 11-15 Mips and can only get 4 Mips. I am demanding a refund unless they provide the speed I pay for. Get rid of the Cable TV and phone and go Netflix. At least they can still work at the crap speed TW provides. If enough say to all the cable companies that their service AND products are crap, take the option to stop cable TV. Why are you paying for 50% commercials!
I feel sorry for the customers that have to rely on TW for service and don't have the education to test for themselves. There is no regulation to control the honesty of the Internet providers. Until we get true competition in the market, forget about truth in advertising in ISP's. They are all crooks.
Try DSL Reports for speed tests.

I've had RoadRunner at this location for the past 11 years now, and it used to be second to none. When it was originally purchased, the rated speed here was 3Mbit/.2Mbit and I watched it slowly increase throughout the years until it reached it's current incarnation as the 10Mbit/1Mbit plan.
Nowadays however, I'm lucky to be able to get 0.8Mbit / 0.1Mbit speedtest to any server, even the one run by TWC that's located only 8 miles from me. 2 hops to the speedtest server and I can't break 1Mbit sustained.
Repeated calls to tech support simply tell me to power cycle my modem and try to connect directly to the modem from my PC to eliminate any other causes. Problem is, it's not my side of the setup. I have gone through that dog and pony show with the reps at least half a dozen times in the part month or so, to no avail. Even with a pair of techs at my house one day, it's now impossible to achieve the speed I pay for. They hemmed and hawed around my home for a while, doing dB tests on the lines on either side of splitters, on the line as it came into the house, on the line that the modem is normally plugged into, they even replaced my modem with a brand new one. I had to remove the factory plastic it was so new, yet none of this did anything.
During peak times it's even worse, I can watch ping times to a server I own in Chicago (I live in Maine) go from their normal ~45ms to around 140ms or more, which is rather incredible that other users on the network are able to so severely impact my performance. It would seem that RoadRunner does not have the capacity to serve my area, and yet they continue to sell more and more connections.
I could not recommend TWC to anyone in good faith that my word won't be taken as a fools word anymore with this sort of performance.
I'm seriously considering dropping this shoddy service and getting the only DSL plan that's available in my area (3.5Mbit/.7Mbit) because I imagine it can't be any slower than what I have now is.

I switched from Verizon DSL to RoadRunner because Time Warner offered a triple play for 89.99 per month. Since my cable alone was going to cost $80 per month ($111 with fees and boxes) I jumped. I am sorry I did. I am fully tweaked and get the advertised speeds on speed tests but the basic package is 10M/512kb. 512 is pathetic.
I also notice that web pages load more slowly than they did on DSL and videos are very choppy.
I also got the phone and they never disclosed that there was a $25 activation fee for it.
All in all I am sorry I switched. DSL was more reliable for me and the 768 upload was a plus.
The only good news is that Verizon engineers have mapped the building and are scheduled to start wiring in Feb or Mar.

My general overall experience was very good (I say "was" because I switched to DSL recently). Web browsing in general was snappy. If you just browse and email, this is the service for you. And the customer service is top-notch. BUT I noticed quite a while back that while I could get insane download speeds on the order of 20 megabits/sec from Microsft.com and lots of other places (like any speed test site), I could often only get 180kbps (about 1.4 megabits) from Apple and a few other places that mattered to me - especially Apple for Itunes, Apple TV, email, etc. But at the same time, I could call a friend nearby who had 6 megabit DSL and he would get a full 6 megabit from Apple at the same time. So I know the bottleneck was with Time Warner not Apple. During the day,I could use my Apple TV just fine, but in the evening, it could take up to hours for a movie to start. I took lots of plots of, for instance, a download from Apple followed immediately by a download from Microsoft and get 1.4 megabit from apple and 20 megabit from microsoft. They must have some competitive reason to throttle traffic from Apple. Also, I noticed that on ANY large download, it would start fast and get slower and slower as time passed. This is probably a throttling mechanism to deter bittorrent users, but it's annoying when you're trying to download a 3.5GB Ubuntu image and it takes 9 hours on you supposed 30 megabit cable connection. BTW, there was no local cable line quality issue, etc. From some sites like the speed test sites, I could always pull 20 megabit. Also, I used a traffic shaping detector and verified that the "Turbo" that brings your speed from 20 megabit to 30 really only gives you about a 2-3 second burst at the beginning of any download xfer, then drops to 20 megabit. This probably makes web browsing and email snappier, but not much more than that. SO... Here's where I'm going with this long story: I contracted with DSL extreme for 6mbit DSL. I had both services simultaneously for a couple weeks and did some tests. The reality was with that almost any download of any reasonable size, especially from Apple, the 6 megabit DSL would win, finishing often significantly before the Roadrunner (and mind you, I had the 30 mbit turbo service). Movies always started within 3 minutes, etc. And web browsing was often snappier, probably due to the lower latencies. And the kicker... It's cheaper. So the moral of the story is sort of a tortoise VS hare thing. Slower, but more consistent speed and lower latency wins. Don't believe it's really 20 or 30 megabit service.

Pay for 15mbps, but receive 1-2mbps after 5pm. During the day, it won't reach above 10mbps. It's painfully obvious the area has been heavily oversold. After a few tech visits and "is your computer connected to the modem through a router?" (try not ripping your hair out the 100th time you've been asked that), nothing has improved. Never mind the HD channels which suffer from compression artifacts on any moving picture. I had to get a Tivo unit after receiving a TWC-issued DVR which was just unusable. It was slow, constantly needed rebooting (which took ~10 minutes) and frequently deleted whatever shows were saved on the hard drive. If there was any shred of competition, there's no question TWC would be put out of business in this area.
