I've just moved to Ft. Myers, FL from No. Virginia. In No. Virginia, I had IDSL from CAIS/Covad so I wanted something at *least* as fast in Florida. I started back in April researching possibilities based upon the new location including both DSL and cable modem. At first things looked bleak but in the end worked out well.

Sprint at the time I initially contacted them did not have DSL available but after speaking with a person a level up in the tech support food chain, I was able to find out that they were rolling the service out around the 17th of April. He advised me to check back around the 1st of May. When I called their sales center after the 1st, DSL still wasn't available at my location. But, again, they advised to try again in a week or so. As my move date of the 15th was starting to loom larger, I became concerned and thought I might have to fall back to ISDN. So, on the 10th of May, I called again, prepared, if to get ISDN. However, when the representative checked, she found that DSL was now available (it hadn't been when I checked on the 8th).

After discussing the differences between residential and business service, I decided to go with business service as I wanted to have a fair sized home office LAN (currently about 9 machines, mixed Mac/Windows) and to do this legitimately required business service. The upside was that I could get more

bandwidth than they nominally offer to residential customers. I selected their 3mb down/512k

up ADSL service along with their supported Ascend CellPipe router ($650).

Unlike some providers, the router is not *free* and you don't have a choice as to which one to use. However, they do let you pay it off monthly with no interest charges.

For business customers, they offer the following configurations:

    Up/Down Cost/mo.

    3mb/512 $213.99

    640/640 $207.99

    1.5/384 $139.99

    512/128 $ 82.99

(I should note that I was paying $200/mo in No. Virginia for IDSL, but a big chunk of that was for 16 IP addresses as well as DNS/Domain hosting.)

After making my choice, Sprint was able to schedule installation for the 26th of May. The technician showed up bright and early at 8am and got to work stringing phone cable (see below) and getting things set up. Once he took care of a bad connector, we quickly got up on the net with his test machine. However, when we tried using my PC, we had a problem. This brings me to the second aspect of the installation. Currently, Sprint uses EarthLink for their ISP and frankly, there is a lot to be desired in

terms of the interaction between Sprint and EarthLink. For example, it turns out that the tech had been given the wrong password for my EarthLink account and that was why it wouldn't connect. Also, the tech didn't have information as to the additional mailboxes you get as part of the business account.

The password problem was quickly taken care of, but it took me from Friday the 26th until Tuesday the 30th to get the mailbox problems squared away. Part of the problem can be blamed on a *total* lack of documentation about the EarthLink service being provided by Sprint and a resulting confusion

when I was talking to EarthLink customer service as to what type of mailbox service I was referring to.

Another downside to the Sprint service is that they don't offer static IPs for their business customers, (but you *can* get it for residential single machine configurations - go figure!). Also, the installation charge is hefty - $199.00 and that doesn't include any "extra" wiring. In my case the network interface for the phone line was on the far side of the house and as there wasn't a jack in the room where I wanted the equipment set up, I had to pay their standard $22/15 min. wiring fee.

But, even with the above downsides, I have to rate the Sprint DSL service as pretty good, with a relatively painless install and so far flawless service. (For comparison, when I had ISDN installed prior to IDSL in No. Virginia it took 3 separate service calls by Hell Atlantic just to get the line installed and then another one when my ISP was ready to get the line tested and provisioned right!)

I have had Sprint's FastConnect DSL service for a few weeks now, and while
everything works great, there were a few bumps in the road getting it to
    work.

I called and ordered the service on a Monday. The representative I talked
to was courteous and asked if I had any questions about anything, of course
    I didn't because I visit dslreports.com. Anyway, I ordered the 1.5Mb/384K
service. The rep. said the tech could be out next Monday, a week, to get it
installed. I though that was great.

So, Monday morning comes and the tech calls before he comes to let me know
he's coming. Wonderful! Now, I must say at this point that down here in SW
Florida, Sprint is outsourcing their PC installs to a computer consulting
company. Anyway, the tech arrives and he has a trainee with him.
Apparently he is being trained on DSL installs.

They installed a new jack, a DSL splitter, and get everything hooked up, but
NO SYNC. So, the two guys work on that the rest of the day, but they can't
get sync. So, at 3:00pm the head tech says he will have to do some
investigating, but he would let me know.

The next day at work, when the tech doesn't call, I get a little anxious and
decide to call Sprint to check on the status. Sprint says the tech ordered
a line test and that a Sprint tech is doing that now. I think, great now
we're getting somewhere. Later on, I get a call from the PC tech saying he
will give it another shot on Wednesday, so I need to be there Wednesday
    morning.

The tech arrives Wednesday morning as promised and tries for 4 hours,
talking to Sprint doing whatever he can to get the darn line to sync, but NO
SYNC. So, he tells me he has some other calls he has to get to, but he will
talk to somebody at my CO and see if they can figure out what's going on.
He says that he thinks it is a bad port or a bad card or something.

On Thursday, I get a call from the tech, I gave him my cellphone number, so
he could call with updates, and he says he thinks he nailed down the
problem, a bad port on the Frame. Anyway, he wants to come out on Friday
and see if we can get this install done. I say fine, let's hope this is it.

The tech gets to my apartment Friday morning and hooks up the DSL modem and
*boom*, we have sync. Finally, my DSL is working. I already had a NIC in
my computer, so he just hooked up the modem to the NIC, plugged in my IP
address, did a speedtest and that was it, I was ready to go.

All in all, I would say that since the service was so new in my area, there
was bound to be problems, I just didn't think it would be me to have the
problems. The service has been extrememly stable since I got it and the
speed is 1250kbps/150KB. I think that is pretty good. It is a little
pricey at $100 a month and a $180 setup fee, but it's all I can get where I
live now and I am happy with it.

Now, if Earthlink would just put a POP closer to me and upgrade those shitty
mail, DNS, and news servers all would be great.

Sprint is doing a very quiet roll-out of ADSL in SW Florida--only word-of-mouth advertising so far. They were able to tell me what my line qualified for on my first call. I ordered 512/128 ADSL. For $49.95 per month, I got the 3Com 10/100 PCI NIC, Alcatel DSL modem, a line splitter, WinPoet for PPPoE and an Earthlink account. Dynamic IPs only in this area, no Win 2000 support. There is no charge for the hardware if I keep the service for 1 year. The install went very smoothly, very competent installer but the CO removed tone dialing from my line when they provisioned it, so that required a call to the support people by the installer--he was a computer guy, not a phone guy so he was perplexed by the loss of the ability to dial out. After 20 minutes, they got it all together and I was connected. Connection speed was +400K out of the box. Had the service 1 week now with no other problems. Earthlink news server is VERY slow but has a decent number of groups, I dont use their mail account so cant comment on that.

I would like to send a review for a DSL service, that I haven't seen in
    your review form yet.
I ordered it on 4/6/00--They said they would install on 4/12/00 at 8:00 am.
The tech was on time and ready to roll, and I was surfing within Eighty
    minutes.
We used a tweak program,to go from 100kbps to 480 kbps on dls report speed test.
I get reg speed rates at MSN speed test for between 600--900 kbps (not sure if this is correct.
Everything went like clock work ,the tech new what he was doing. And I
couldn't be more satisfied, Well I could if they hadn't charged for
    installation.
But I have read some horror stories with free install.
At least 4 stars, could be 5 stars

I had DSL service - for a very short time. By the time my eigth day of
service rolled around (last Saturday, May 6), my service went out for the
FOURTH time. They had installed a "Speed Touch" modem because their "normal"
modem didn't seem to work with my system. The installer had the nerve to use
MY NIC for the hookup which meant I had to buy another NIC to get the PC
    back on my LAN.

I called tech support on Saturday. Told them my modem had only one light
on - steady red. The tech had me power down and disconnect the modem, then
put it back together again. Didn't work. He told me "call back Monday". I
said, "you mean I don't have service for the entire weekend?" He replied
    "yes".

I told them to take their modem out yesterday and they'd better not charge
    me one cent.

FYI, I switched to Sprint DSL because Cox cable modem hasn't been 100%
reliable either. However, Sprint makes Cox look REALLY good. Luckily I
hadn't yet stopped my cable modem service so I got right back online.

It's obvious to me that the techs and installers at Sprint have no clue, so
    buyer beware.

Ordered 1.5/386 service in mid-April from a knowlegeable and pleasant Sprint High Speed Data Center sales rep who *actually* returned calls and emails to answer specific questions I had about the service - both technical and service related. Installers arrived on expected date and time and were confronted with several problems (no sync due to a bad card at the remote SLC - turns out I was the first user on this remote). A call to local telco yielded a near immediate service call to fix that problem at the remote. Once sync-ed they found that line had been provisioned with wrong defaults and one call later that was corrected remotely. Wiring work was clean and professional. A new model external Alcatel Speedtouch (excellent so far) was installed due to the peculiarity of my PC and network. Installers were well prepared and answered my many questions professionally and courteously.

Current speeds range from 900-1300 down and 200-300 up. Thanks to DSLreports tracert I have found there may be some kinks in the high speed Florida Sprint network - which would explain the varied rates. Probably to be expected in a new service area - even the other Sprint state markets are relatively new I understand. Hopefully moderate packet loss conditions will improve on these segments.

Overall a very pleasant experience - having been prepared for the worst

Only negatives to add to packet loss on net would be the need to bring price of service down to comparable levels in other ISP FLA market areas. $99 for 1.5/386 (512/128 is $49) is slightly steep along with the $190 installation.

I ordered ADSL service from Sprint on Mar. 8 and and was scheduled for an install on Mar. 16. I came home on the 14th and found a message on my door saying that the installer had arrived and found that no one was home. I called to find out what had happened and they said there was a miscommunication between their (Sprints') office and the installer (an independent contractor). They told me that he would still keep the original appointment, but after reading so many reports on this site I have to admit that I was leery of anything they told me.However, as it turned out, this was the biggest glitch of the entire install process.

The installer showed up about 30 minutes early. He immediately recommended an external modem. I figured this was because he would save time by not having to open up the case. I said that, despite the lack of desk space, the Alcatel 4060 External would be fine. He also implicated that there were some problems with the internal model which swayed my decision. All in all the install went smoothly. He loaded WinPoET 2.0, connected to Earthlink the first try, and gave me my new username and password. Since I already had an Earthlink account, I called Tech support and asked them to cancel my dial-up account so my new account would have the same identities as my old one.

Tech support was pretty quick to take care of this. They told me that the installer should have dealt with this matter, but since they took care of it themselves in about 90 minutes, I didn't mind

I went to dslreports site and began to look around. I found the speed test page and started to log a few tests. My results weren't very impressive so I started to look into the Tweaks section. It took awhile before I realized that I may have to go into my register and increase the size of my receive window (RWIN). I changed it to about 34,xxx and my download results went from around 58-62 kbps to 420- 424 kbps ! This is such a significant increase that I can't understand why the installer didn't take an extra 40 to 50 seconds to do it. I don't know how many people like me have DSL service but haven't been made aware of this option, but it seems like it should be part if the standard install procedures. I subsequently increased it to about 65,545 but this had no additional impact on my scores.

Since the install, I have downloaded a firewall, (ZoneAlert 2.0) after a security test gave me a relatively low (bad) score and I have to say that now there is only one quirk in my system. When I first boot up, if I do anything before I start WinPoET, it usually gives me an error message something to the effect that there is a general hardware failure and that the port could not be opened. I havve to do a warm boot and start up WinPoET first thing, go about my business and then open up my web browser to go to the internet.

ADSL Installation for Sprint Las Vegas, NV

I ordered a 512/128 DSL line from Sprint on Thursday (1/20). This was a
special promotion Sprint was running for a few days, where they allow you to
install the home equipment yourself. So far everything has gone well. I
received the box the following Thursday (1/27) from UPS. It contained an
Efficient Networks Speedstream 3060 PCI DSL card, and a CD-ROM with drivers,
    online manual, and
MS DUN 1.3. A baggie held three inline phone filters, a filter plate for
wall phones, an RJ-11 jack splitter, and two phone cords. Documentation was
the usual safety warning, an errata sheet for the 3060, and a one page
instruction sheet with the number for Sprint tech support.

As part of the deal Sprint will send an observer to watch me install the
card and see where I have problems. This observer will also have the user
name and password for the Earthlink ISP account. The observer is scheduled
for 11am on Saturday (1/29). Looking over what I got it seems
straightforward, install the PCI card (I have a spare IRQ, checked that),
connect the splitter and filters on the phone line, call Sprint to turn on
the DSL, then sign on to Earthlink.

Saturday morning, the Sprint observer arrived a few minutes after the
scheduled appointment. He delivered a new manual and software to replace
what was shipped in the Sprint box, plus my Earthlink account information.
As this is supposed to be a self-installed project, he doesn't help me but
watches to see what mistakes I make while following the install manual. He
brought along a videocam for help desk training.

Once he was set up, I put the DSL card (Efficient 3060) in a PCI slot. My
bus happens to be full, so I have to pull the internal modem card (no great
loss, I can go external if I still need a modem later). I boot up and
follow the installation guide, a straightforward driver install not
too different from a new modem card. The CD has the 3060 drivers for Win98
and WinPoet 2.0, plus the earthlink login setup screen. After the drivers
are installed (plus a reboot at this point) I get a synch indication on the
screen. PPPoE is installed next (WinPoet 2.0), then the Earthlink
login comes on. No joy, I can't get a connection. I recheck the cables,
disconnect the power bricks for scanner and printer (just in case it's
switcher noise) and try again, still no connection. I check the online
help, it's all troubleshooting for dial modems. I check the new manual,
troubleshooting section only covers PCI bus conflicts and insufficient
    memory.

Out of options, I call the Sprint support line. First hint...do not select
"Installation" from the voice menu, has nothing to do with installation
problems. "Tech Support" got me to a tech after about 10 minutes. He
checked, found problem right away, line was not fully provisioned, problem
is at CO. He checks with the "broadband group" to get the line finished,
after about 20 minutes he comes back on the phone. The VCI is incorrect, it
seems Sprint sells both PPPoA and PPPoE
in town, my line is set for PPPoA, incorrectly, which is why the
provisioning was not completed. Another 30 minutes and the VCI is changed.

Joy! I pass the Earthlink login screen. A quick test shows about 460Kb
download speed, not bad for a 512Kb line (no tweaks yet). Sprint guy
apologizes, in a perfect world work orders get done in time. The observer
packs up the camera and asks me a few questions about the install. Overall
my impression is favorable, it would be nice to be sure the line is
provisioned first, and there were some trivial errors in the install manual
(a beta test copy from the looks). Compared to getting an ISDN line it was
    very easy.

Drawbacks: no NT support, and no static IP address for a while yet. Sprint
is working on a business package that will include NT and static IP but it's
a few months off. They will also be working with local ISPs for the
    business services.

Observer told me Sprint wants to roll out a large scale self-install program
but doesn't have the manpower to handle it right now. Las Vegas is the
fastest growing city in the US and they can barely handle new phone line
installs. The bottleneck now is provisioning lines, that's where most of
their problems show up. There are sections of town with DLCs but they are
slowly putting in DSLAMs at those locations. Sprint is feeling competition
from cable companies and is concerned about voice over IP on cable taking
away customers, so they are expanding their own broadband program.

So far so good. I asked about the connection to the internet backbone,
always a bottleneck with ISPs. Sprint uses a variable rate connection via
optical lines. If DSL usage exceeds 70% of available bandwidth they
dynamically allocate more bandwidth to the backbone connection. Sprint
considers this a competitive advantage to cable systems, they can offer a
higher quality service under heavy loads.

The connection is always on, but the observer told me they have had a few
spot outages that haven't been resolved yet, most likely an intermittent
    hardware failure somewhere.

Based on the horror stories in the DSl newsgroup (comp.dcom.xdsl) I have to
say Sprint is doing pretty well so far. Installation was painless, the CO
problem I expected from prior experience in setting up ISDN lines. Without
the VCI problem the whole install would have been less than an hour long.
Best of all, the wife loves it, domestic tranquility has been restored.

A friend of mine on the other side of town was also installing a DSL line on
the same Saturday. He had exactly the same problem, line was not
    provisioned correctly.

Cost was $49.95 for the install, offset by getting first month free. Sprint
will bill the installation as a lump sum or in three installments. This was
a special rate for the self-install, normal rate with a technician visit is
$179, and first month free. Monthly rate is $44.95 based on a one year
commitment. I own the DSL card, Sprint will provide the warranty for one
    year.

Tech support has to go through Sprint, even for ISP problems. Earthlink
does not accept calls directly from Sprint DSL customers, only referrals
    from Sprint tech support.

First few days in use and no real problems. Sprint didn't provide details
on connecting to the Earthlink news server but I managed to figure it out.
Speed has been consistently good. I have seen some timeouts, a tracert
shows it to be in a Sprint router, but this has been intermittent. When it
does occur the offending router seems to disappear from the tracert after a
while so I assume Sprint is aware of a problem. The observer did indicate
they were having intermittent problems. This has been affecting ICQ and
some telnet connections but so far it's not too serious. I'll wait a few
more days to see if it clears up.

I called the second day that DSL was availible to those of us not in the Summerlin area (early in August). First install date 4 weeks from the day I called. How did so many people get ahead of me? (they do 2/day/tech. with about 20 techs from what I can tell) They had no adverts at the time. Funny thing I requested a call from a reprasentative in April of 98 to call me when service was availible, still waiting for the call as of 1/22/00.

First they did not tell me that I had to have a desktop (I use a laptop. do not let anyone tell you it does not work on a laptop). Second they did not check my line for load coils. Third I was told my phone line was included with the service: it is not.

I had to borrow my girlfriend's workstation to get the install done. [They did use a good NIC, 3COM] They had not provisioned the line, so they rescheduled. [2 more weeks waiting]. The first tech (a lead tech at that) did not know enough about computers to fill a thimble. At the second attempt to install the tech did not show at the prearranged time. I called the 888 number only to be told that they do not schedule times. Had to reschedule again [3 more weeks]. On the third attempt to set up the tech not only installed the software on my laptop, he gave me a copy of it in the package that was to be sent out later to subscribers. He also told me to call Earthlink if I wanted another. [I did receive another in the mail]. He also informed that they (DSL providers) were worried that laptop users would take the equipment to work and log on from there. that is supposidly why they do not want laptop installs). The last tech not only repaired the poor install of the lead tech (who came out first), but was much more honest about the problems they had been having on installs. He could not get synch on my ANT. He called the provisioning office, after swapping out my ANT. Again they had not provisioned the number yet. The tech stayed until he received word the number was provisioned. Still no synch. The tech swapped my ANT for another one (third so far). Still no synch. He then called the engineers at Sprint to check for load coils. There were 3 on my line. He gave the number to contact the engineers directly, and left. It then took another 4 weeks to get the load coils cleared and my line rerouted.

To really make things worse, the apartment across the courtyard had DSL before I did. I told him about the service! He called and was up and running in 4 weeks.

Now that I have my service I have only experianced 2 outages. Both in the first 2 weeks, late at night. Word has it they blew the DSLAMs. I am getting the speed I pay for. I even changed the software that accesses the service, from WinPoET.

Tech support is a joke. I know more about DSL than they do. I have been tempted to send them my DSL for Dummies book, but that would be a waste of a good book. They also told my I could not use Linux to access their service, I have.

I even reconfigured my system to use Cox cable's DNS lookup instead of Earthlinks slow unresponsive DNS server.

As an aside: the complex I live in has common Cable. So if I were to sign with Cox (local provider) cable everyone would have it. Even if I could go with cable, I would not. I have friends with cable connections, and they can not keep up with mine. All in all I am happy with the service. It appears that Sprint is making an effort to improve service and install. I have talked to people getting installs after me, they have received good service.

    Hope that helps.

Note: On August 20,2000 I installed a Linksys router/hub/firewall (4 port). This has improved my connection immensely. I am running two computers simultaniously. The connection actually quicker now. I no longer have to have winpoet running. thank God!.

i ordered sprint dsl in late july for my las vegas office. then they had told me a setup date in september or so. so i waited patiently and what happened?.....no body came. i had to fly out to vegas for this computer setup. so i was mad as hell, and called their dsl center, and they told me all they could do is reschedule my appointment date. also when i talked to them at that time, they told me that ONLY their specialized service men could install the dsl software. i said that was ok, but i also asked if i upgraded to windows 98, or nt, would it cost me anything for the man to come out.....and they said no. now i decided to upgrade to windows NT so i can run a web/mail server, but when i called yesterday they told me it would cost $125 for a man to come out and enter a few i.p. addresses. i was really pissed off.

does anyone know any other DSL service providers in the Las Vegas area?

Is this a breach of contract?

does anyone know how to get out of this cheezy 1 year contract?
