Update: Seems the wrong people were being contacted. They figured out the issue and repaired it. I will be re-modifing the review after a few days, so I can give a fair review.
I've had Embarq at our residence for almost 30 years. We've added all the new features as they've come in over the years. About two years ago, we dropped our comcast and went to Embarq DSL. Since that time, it has only been the biggest hassle. We got like $300+ in charges where it was "On our side," and the issue still hasn't been resolved.
Every time we get a tech, they say reset the modem.....how many times to you need to press that button with a pin, before it works?
Most resent ticket was put in a week ago and today. Still no help, and the techs said it was my router (new reason, even though I've removed the router from the equation).
I don't typically dog internet companies, but Embarq never owns up for it's issues in our case, and always fails to deliver.
I understand this has been my experience and not every gets as bad support as okeechobee florida.

The only other option for broadband here is Hughes.net, which we suffered greatly with for two long agonizing years. Thanks to the help of a tech on the Embarq forum at this site, we finally got DSL. It was installed promptly, works great and at consistent speeds which make Hughes.net look like a dead weasel. All the techs have been very helpful. Its wonderful being able to talk to real people again, who seem genuinely concerned about their customers. I feel like I've been released from prison. Thank you Embarq!
Update-it still works, perfectly. A couple of brief outages (mostly involving DOT chopping the phone lines to bits, which they do every summer)but otherwise its worked wonderfully. No problems, no glitches...this is GREAT! I think the stress related baldness from trying to use Hughes.net is starting to clear up..

Well, I was certainly excited to finally get DSL, that's for sure! For nearly a decade, all I had was dial-up...then Sprint saved the day with EVDO service...sadly, it started going haywire after only 10 months, and it never was decent from that time on...so, while it was a step up from dial-up, it still wasn't something that I drooled over. Embarq? That's a different story.
Either way, I found out DSL was available on Wednesday; was busy Thursday, thus, I ordered Friday. Only 2 business days later (Tuesday), the installer came, spliced some copper pairs together in their box and replaced my old lightning-protector-only box (tiny square box) with the newer customer interface device. Later, that day, I got my modem pack via UPS.
All was well, but I was informed there were some programming errors at the switch that would prevent me from being able to get DSL, until some time the next day. Thanks to an immense amount of help from an Embarq employee, my switch was programmed, and, better yet, I was on fastpath! I noticed when he first got my connection going, that latency was around 70ms to Google...after fastpath was enabled, it dropped down to 34ms, and later, on down to 21ms.
All in all, the connection has been solid, speed wise--here's a test:
My connection went down this morning, but I'm not going to take off for that; my switch was just recently "lit" with DSL, and I was probably the first to sign up for DSL in my area, so I expect a few bumps in the road for the first couple of weeks...at least, until they get the kinks worked out.
My only complaint about Embarq is their pricing structure; it's a little high, in comparison with other DSL providers...I think that prices should be cut, across the board about $5...that said, pricing still really isn't that bad, and if my good tech support, speeds, and latency keep up, I'm more than happy to pay a little more for stable, reliable service. Also, if I were them, I'd bump the 5 megabit package to 6 megabits...but that's just me...again, no big deal, at all.
in the future, I may consider going DSL only and using, instead, VoIP service; I did several VoIP tests, and all of them came out, literally, perfect, or very near to it.
Internet browsing is a lot snappier, thanks to my higher speed, and, just as importantly, my ultra-low latency. Also, I can finally stream "&fmt=18"/High quality YouTube videos without it having to buffer or anything like that; yay!
All in all, I'm very very happy with Embarq, and hope to remain a customer with them as long as I live at my current location.
minor update:
I've now since dropped Embarq's phone service (wasn't using it) and have went with their "Direct DSL" AKA "naked DSL" or "DSL only". All in all, I've been very very happy with it....since the writing of this review I've had one outage that lasted approximately 5-10 hours, but I'm not going to take off for that now, as I expect at least 1-2 outages in a year. Overall, it's still rock-solid.
update: 1/27/09
Well, with the recent change in Embarq's pricing structure, I've decided to upgrade my service to 10 meg; overall very very impressed with it; when downloading Ubuntu I get 1.2 MB/s down with FireFox and 1.17 MB/s down with IE. Because of the price drop of 10 meg, I'm going to up Embarq's rating for "value for money". While I still think that the 10 meg should be $50, the $55 is still way more than worth it, IMHO, and I shouldn't be complaining in the least bit.
10 meg speedtest: »www.speedtest.net/result/398868547.png
Hope Embarq's service remains this rock solid for years to come....and let us all hope they eventually release a bonded ADSL2+ package...or start rolling out VDSL2 :P

Had it for over a year. Routinely drops. Speed stinks. The only good thing was installation where I called, went and picked up unit, and it was running next day. Other local option is Comcast at double the cost and 12 times the speed. I'd avoid unless you really only need very light internet access.

At first, I had ClearWire, which is not enough for my needs. I am on the other side of a bridge, and they are too lazy to connect cable over to our neighborhood, so the only option was Clearwire, satellite, or DSL. I looked at some satellite ISP, and they are sooooo expensive! I decided to try Clearwire, but it's slow as hell! Then I decided to give Embarq DSL a try, and guess what? The best speed I had in mt life (I never had cable before). Like they say, I should get 5 Mbps download, and I did! Downloading file now at 500 KBps, uploading YouTube videos in a zip! If I were you, and I don't have much ISP choices, I would definitely choose Embarq DSL.

We will be leaving Embarq next month. We are moving to Missouri. There we will be limited to DSL speeds of 2 or 3 megs MAXIMUM!!. So, those who complain about speeds, etc, you are luckier than you may know.
We stand by our review of Embarq, and will miss the speeds, service, etc. Hopefully with it becoming CenturyLink, it will stay as good as it is now or get even better!
THey need to buy out the Ozark Phone company.......hint hint.
I have had Embarq's DSL for over 10 years now, and it smokes the local cable ISP hands down. Embarq's tech support is courteous, knowledgeable, and will go to whatever lengths to be sure that your questions are answered, and you are satisfied. I have the dynamic IP. The service goes through the modem, to my router, then to my wifes and my computers. I've been on the 'net for well over a decade, and have had all the hype, including Comcasts Internet service. What the cable people don't tell you is that the more people there are on a node, the SLOWER it will be, and there is no way around it. Whereas Embarq's DSL, is as advertised, and much more reliable and stable.
This is an update to my original review. The only things that have changed is the date on the calendar, and that what was Sprint local phone/internet is now Embarq.

Current plan is 54.95/mo for up to 10.0M download / 896k upload. Came with the Embarq 660. Order and install was quick, but I live in a small town and the service guys are only one-block away.
I started with Embarq several years ago and at first the DSL was lousy, with constant drop-outs and speeds would often drop to a crawl. In the last year, things have improved. I can't remember the last time I was bumped, but speed slowdowns continue.
When I first go on-line, service will start at 54.0 Mbps and then will decrease down to 24Mbps. I then have to "repair" via Windows to get everything back up to speed. The same thing can happen when I've been on-line for awhile. It's frustrating and I don't know the cause.

I have the 768/356 ER DSL. Is is very stable. I just wished they offered faster connection speed at my home. I am very satified with it overall. I have bridged the router and able to share with 2 Dell desktops, Directv, a Blu-ray player for netflixs, and 1 Dell laptop, and 2 Macbooks.
I used to use Sprint 3g card with a router for my home network. At times it was faster, but very unstable at times.
I would highly recommend this if you live in the areas served by Embarq ER DSL.
