Sheffield Lake,Lorain,OH
$40 per month (24 month contract)
about 7 days
"Svc. available when promised; tech support helpful when troubleshooting modem problems; no separate bill since local phone co."
"Maybe not as fast as others in country are getting, but fast enough for me!"
"Not sure if still only player in this town (Sheffield, OH)...but I highly recommend as whole experience has been A+"

It took only 7 days from ordering to being up and running. Service may have been available sooner, but I had to wait for modem to arrive. Service worked for only one day tho, due to defective modem, which was replaced within a week. Speeds may not be as high as others in country are getting, but much faster than what I was getting before and that's all that matters to me! I haven't run a speed test in a while so won't give any numbers here; they are quite different each time I run tests, anyway!!
Tech support has been extremely helpful in troubleshooting (once with the modem problem, another time when settings got messed up somehow) (Side note: I highly recommend Justin who works the overnight/early a.m. shift!!) Priced competitively: $40 per month for 24 month contract, had to pay $99 for the Westell modem, but I just received a credit of $50 that I requested due to fact that CenturyTel has now dropped modem price to $49, nice of them to credit the difference!!)
This may be one of the only DSL players in our town (Sheffield Village) right now, but I still have been recommending CenturyTel to people due to ease of installation, price of service, the friendly and competent tech service that I received, and, gee, now with the modem at only $49, what else can someone ask for before making that switch from dial-up?!?!?

Westel Modem Dynamic IP w/PPPoE. ISP service provided by CenturyTel is marginal. Only one mailbox. Poor USENET. Service works well with my Netgear RT314 router.
The service is a 512K up / 256k down. I seem to get 420's up and about 205 down. Not bad, but not the fastest of broadbands. I had to pay $100 for the modem. The first one was DOA. You would think Westel could do something as simple as a power on test to see if the supply was functional. I had to send the modem back to CenturyTel before they would order me a new one. I did get them to (grudgingly) ship the new one overnight. The contract is for 2 years. A bit long, given the rate of change in the market for broadband. The local cable company is promising 768k with no sharing issues, but they have yet to bring the service to my neighborhood. So, the first provider won.
BTW: I am not in Montana. I have CenturyTel in Redmond, WA.

This review is for CenturyTel's Avon, Ohio (Lorain County) service.
The install couldn't have been easier. I ordered during the middle of July and was up and running by August 1st. Since then the service has been very reliable as far as availability goes. I've only been aware of one outage and it lasted for 30 minutes at most. Other than that, it's been on nice and steady.
On the few (less than 10) occasions I've contacted support (telephone and email) they've been very responsive in at least getting to me right away. I don't think I've was ever on hold for more than 5 minutes and my emails are always answered within 1 day and most times within a few hours. Nice job!
My only complaints about the service -
(1) I'm paying for 512K downstream. I've NEVER had over 420k or so. I don't expect to hit the ceiling but ~20% overhead seems a bit excessive. I'm wondering if they've over sold their capacity. No big deal as 420k ain't to shabby compared to a dialup.
(2) My only REAL complaint is a daily slowdown between 6PM and 10PM - like clockwork. During these times I vary rarely get over 60k down and most of the time it is much less. I understand that this is probably peak internet usage time but simple ping and traceroute tests tell me that the problem is more than likely centurytel's single point of connectivity through alter.net. I've just asked again what they're are doing to resolve this bottleneck. Hopefully something...
Overall I'd give them a solid B.

Okay, here is two cents of our opinion. We signed up our office on the Business Line. Tried to reach them initially by phone, per their ad. That was going to be a lengthy process,(the usual telephone maze) so finally just emailed 'the man' Scott. Two days later, I received a response signing us up. Okay, not too good, nor too bad, just the level of service we have to put with in our nation (Pls enter 2 if you want to talk with..... please leave a msg at the tone....)
I contacted a tech installer, who installed and services our phone system, he had good things to say about C-Tel and DSL. Since we have dealt with this contract tech firm, we opted to use them again. And they have been installing many DSL systems in our area for C-Tel.
Contract came timely, I signed and returned.
Waited for UPS to deliver the 'box'(modem & router). We recieved the 'box' and our tech came in and spent 4+ hours trying to install and get us on line. No go! Why???? Turns out C-Tel had ordered or sent the wrong router and modem. Just who made the error, I do not know. C-Tel takes the order and then orders the equipment from some supplier, who UPS' it out to us. Maybe the supplier sent the wrong equip't.
Our tech installer reordered the correct equip't and when it arrived via UPS, I had the tech back. No problem, when you have the correct equipment. He had us hooked up, networked, and zipping around in an hour.
So we are up and running, as I type this. I will give C-Tel an grade of A- to B+ ... They knew we needed to hook into a network, and just ordered the wrong equipment. But I have to say, they quickly corrected the error and we are surfing smoothly. The second UPS was delivered much quicker than the first shipment of wrong equipment.
I have to add, that it helped greatly that our tech, Butch Keith at Installation Technology, really helped move it along. He is installing many DSL's and knows how to cut thru the C-Tel red tape and phone msg systems. So a partof C-Tel's performance is because they have a good contractor out there. This may have been a longer and sadder story if I had to cut through their red tape, and it would have taken longer to find out that we had the wrong modem.
Would I recommend this to other business' ??? Yes, as long as they use Installation Technology to install into their business. Would I recommend C-Tel DSL ? Yes
If a company makes an error, I can understand it. The best part was it was corrected quickly and efficiently, which is all we can ask for.

We signed our ADSL contract and dropped it off at the CenturyTel office on July 31. We were offered 512kbs/256kbs and a dynamic IP address with one email box at $39.95 per month for a 2 year contract. We had to pay $99.95 for a Westell modem, but install fee was waived.
On August 6 we received a letter with our login and password and a note that our modem would be sent separately. On August 15th we got a call from CenturyTel that our line was ready to go and we could just plug in our modem when it came. It came that afternoon. We plugged it in, installed the software with no problems at all and were off and running.
So far we have had a problem-free, reliable connection. We called Tech support once with a question and they answered immediately and were very helpful.
The only remotely unfavorable thing I have to say is that the speed is not quite as promised. We generally get around 371/210. But we haven't done any tweaks yet and I'm sure that will improve things. In any case, what we do get is pretty fast in comparison to what we were getting with our 56k modem (which never connected at more than 33-45 anyway).
All in all, I am very impressed with CenturyTel and their handling of this new service. No horror story here!
