My Other Reviews

·Verizon Wireless..
I dont have many options where i live i have underground utillities to my house and i live 500 ft from the pole so im pretty limited. I used to have Verizon and then they got bought out by Fairpoint i had a 3 mb dsl line and synced up at 1.5. So i decided to opt for GWI which offered a 10mb dl and 1mb ul. Pretty much my service has been very very sporadic with no connection or a weak connection to 6mb at the best. The problems are so bad ive made at least 50 phone calls to tech support, they must have a log on me 10 pages long because now when i call them they wont do anything to help me. As soon as i give them my user id theyre like oh this guy again. What can i say i pay $75 a month for phone and internet through them and im extremely unhappy with my internet. I never get a consistant connection its usually 3mb or less and i want better speeds. I play alot of games on my ps3 that is pretty much what i use my internet for the most thats the important thing for me and the experience is lousy. When i first started calling tech support they would mess with some settings and get me close to 6 mb dl again over the phone but now they wont even bother all they say is weve done everything we can on our end. Im so annoyed with them thats their job. When i lose half my speed thats a problem i shouldnt have to call them 5 times a week. Im gonna switch back to fairpoint i guess just because its cheaper and at least with them my connection was consistant even though it was slow, but i think the ping times were better with fairpoint. GWI says they offer high speeds but be careful because it might be a lousy connection that you have to keep resetting your modem and calling tech support a 100 times. And if you call to much tech support knows who you are and wont help you at all anymore. Ive had service through them four about a year, theyve got enough of my money.

Update: 1/23/12 So i had a visit today from a tech support guy his name was Frank he was a nice guy and seemed pretty knowledgeable he got my bandwidth back to normal for me. I discussed with him how i was actually more concerned with my Ping/latency then my actual bandwidth. He did some further tests and at my local hub and NID outside and found some grounding issues and has put a ticket in with Fairpoint (they are the telephone company who owns the lines). Hopefully they follow through with this. I was really really close to switching back to Fairpoint. I actually still have an order in with them to switch my line back over but ill call and cancel it in the morning. I feel like they are actually trying to fix the problem for me now and ill give them one more shot. I'll keep my fingers crossed and update when i know more.

I am new to this area and after a year of living in broadband no-man's land it was SO good to be able to have high speed internet again.

I first decided to go with Verizon DSL I signed up a month before I moved so the service would be running fairly soon thereafter. So my phone service was turned on the day we moved in, but I still had to wait another 2 weeks for the DSL. No Problem I thought. It then turns out that Verizon had given me another vendor's number and they needed to change it. When that occurred I asked if this was going to upset my original DSL order. The answer was of course no it will not.

After a few day I still had not received my modem, so I called Verizon and I am told that because of the new number I had to set up a new DSL order with another wait of 2 weeks. This was completely unacceptable, so, I decided not to order the service.

It was about this time I ran into GWI website and began to look at ordering the service. The price was a bit more than Verizon's was with out taxes and fees, but the service was faster, much faster. So I ordered the regular service 3/768 for about $35 a month. The very nice sale rep I spoke with told me it could take anywhere from 3-6 days for the service to be activated. 3 days later I receive my modem and when I plug it in the service was already ON !!!!! I have a dynamic IP but will see if I can change that to static. I did call customer service to give them my Ethernet card's MAC Address and the wait was HORRIBLE I was on the phone for a whole hour before I finally spoke with someone. However for the price and speed and so far reliability it is a minor inconvenience . I would recommend it to anyone in the Norway South Paris Maine area

***Update***

I have since switched to their premium tier service 5mb down 1mb up My actual speeds are about 4.8mb down and 700k up not too bad for being about a mile away from the central office in Norway. The service is VERY reliable with only one outage due to maintenance . I am wondering why there was no email or other notification that the service was going down.

****Update****

December 23,2005

Looks like GWI wants to scale service back from 5mb to 2.5mb due to lack of use in the Norway/South Paris area Personally, I think this idea stinks and I am quite upset to say the least. I knew this service was too good to be true.

Well, they dropped the speeds and since the decrease the service has been terrible. I have also just found out that my bill is only going to drop by $5.00!! They drop my bandwidth by more than half and they are only dropping the price by five. Looks to me like the next thing to drop is me.

GWI is great IF, your close to a CO, and the wiring in your home is new ( less then 10 years old) 99% of the homes are not build in last 10 years. 80% of the customer base is at 14,000 ft giving them very poor speeds and inconsonant connections. I would like to also point out that as a former employee of GWI, I see that 10 of the 12 reviews were posted by current employees.

Calling into support places you on hold ( prime time 3 pm to 10 pm) for well over an hour, calls back are 2 hours if at all that day. Expect to see worst call back and hold times and they get ready to lay off more people.

Nobody comes to the home to install anything, then send you the modem in the hopes that it will work when you hook it up, 50% of the time this is not the case and the customer is then down until then can get somebody to the home, in 99% of the cases that can take up to a week. Leaving you without service until then.

Dispatching to your home is the LAST step. The first thing they do, is tell you the customer to go outside the home with a screw driver, and open the phone NID and try testing the modem and service on your own. This is something everything other company ( ever verizon) will come to the home and do for you.

I would test out GWI and see if you get a good connection and speeds if you do great keep the service, if not cancel right away as trouble shooting could be a long painful process.

**UPDATE** It seems the CEO of GWI felt he needed to post on my review? I am insulted that you would even hint that I would lie due to the fact that I no longer work there. I fail to see how being a former employee makes what I posted fales, it would seem as a former employee I would know better then anybody what the in's an out's of support and service at GWI was? I say was as I stopped working there over a year ago, at the time I was a supervisor at GWI and everything I posted was 100% true.
