I tried to get broadband since 12-01-2003 cable tv was available, high speed internet was not.I had just about given up on getting high speed anything. At the time i had dial up things looked hopeless through January and Feb. of this year (2004).In March i visited Epix's web site to check availability of Jackflash dsl.Didn't qualify at the time.Joy oh joy a week later i received a flier that Jackflash will soon be available. Immediatly called Epix and yes dsl was being pre-sold in my area.Needless to say i signed up and forgot about it.About 2 weeks later a UPS truck pulled up with the install kit.Hooked everything up had sync.I called Epix they verified that i was indeed ready to go.The dsl service originally was 640 down/160 up for a 12 month contract at a cost of $49.99 per month. It may have been a little costly considering the speeds posted from broad band users here for less money. The dsl is pppoe, dynamic ip, effecient speedstream 5200 modem in bridged mode used with a D-link router(not supplied by Epix).I do not remember the exact month but the service was upgraded to 1500/384 with no price increase.Tech support-the few times i have called was fast and helpful no long que hold times. On 10-18-2004 Monday night i lost my connection,Called tech support on 10-19-2004 Tuesday morning. The tech Agent and I did the basic trouble shooting and concluded that the modem was bad.I kinda knew that when i couldnt do a release/renew using the winipcfg, hung there forever I tried a computer with xp and a different nic same result and it reported a dhcp error. The Epix tech said the modem is bad, wrote out a ticket to have it replace by the next day.Lo and behold recieved modem today on 10-20-2004 Wednesday.Replaced modem all is well up and running.I decided to do a review to get rid of the review nag after installing new modem .I really hope more bandwidth speed is on the way.BTW cable internet is finally available in my area i only waited 11 months for it and what is offered cannot compete with my current speed and price to have cable tv and cable internet will cost around $130-140 per month with less speed .Thanks but no thanks I'll KEEP DSL .Rock solid connection,no down time ,maintaince of network is made known in advance usually done between midnight and 6am no problem there.Beats dial up by a couple of miles, could not ever use or go back to dial up ever again. If dsl ever goes down I can wait it out lol

UP Date 08/25/2005
Epix DSL service,is still rock solid. I would recommend Epix Jackflash DSL to new customer's based upon my experience with Jackflash DSL..I had one modem replaced, after trouble shooting with a tech, who determined that the modem did indeed need replacement, which i recieved a new modem the next day.I would call that execellent customer service. Thanks Epix,I really appreciate that.!!
The DSL itself is trouble free, Knock on wood .Any scheduled network maintainc is emailed to the customer, a few days in advance, giving the time frame DSL will be down. From when my dsl went live, up to and including today. There were between 5 to 10 instances of getting this page cannot be displayed.During those times,I was unable to ping epix.net for 2-3 minutes, then it cleared up, which in my opinion is minor. The ping time of the 1500/384 package is lower than the original speed of 640/160.The 12 month term is now month to month at same price of $39.99. I'm very happy with the dsl service, tech support, billing, no problems to report on.I don't email much, When I do,There has not been any problems with email.
Now that i have become accustomed to the speed, I'm hoping faster speed will be available in the near future. 3-6 meg down,1meg up or faster would be sweet. Not that there is anything wrong with my current speed, it's just after being bitten by the broadband bug.One cannot have enough speed. .My ratings of Jack flash will not be changed.

Up Date 01-22-2007
There is not much to add to this update of Epix DSL. The service for me has been fantastic and rock solid. No major outages or issues, in fact from my last up date until now, the DSL service was out for less than 12 hours. Email from time to time, fails to login or authenticate, wait a couple of minutes, try again, it works. Which is really a non issue and is possibly the only nit pick, if so inclined, I could say about DSL service.
Service is still 1500/384 @ $39.99 per month. I like almost everyone else, would love to get a faster connection or more speed.
Since I purchased this DSL, until now I have made less than 10 calls to Customer Service or tech Support.
Tech support is on the ball, very helpful and knowledgeble. Customer Service Reps are first rate, up front and honest. No hidden fees, no double billing, no bullchit, very impressive.
I highly recommend the service, well, actually the broadband connection sells itself, once dial up users try it.

Update August 06-2008
Epix bought by Frontier
DSL, is still a pittiful 1500/384connection, yet it is stable and solid. In this day and age 1500/384 is dial up. Now there is a modem rental fee. No surprise there, this is a teleco after all.
Other IPS give you a %100 free to own modem.
Between, Youtube, streetfire, net, and other online free content. The kids online gaming, streaming music, patches, updates. We WILL use 5 Gb in under a single day due to multiple family members.
Spoke with tech support concerning the 5GB combined upload and download consumption during the course of a 30-day billing period.
Response:Were not enforcing that right now. It is system wide and can not be removed.
Well, Frontier, why is it put into place if it will not be used? Implement such a ridicules cap and the moment any extra charge appears on my bill, internet and dish service will be terminated.
Pre Sales information: Inquired about availability of speed upgrade to 3 meg service. Frontier took 6 days to discover the speed upgrade was/is not available in my area. Now with caps, it would not be worth the cost of upgrading.
Install Co-ordination: Epix, not Frontier is rated.
Connection reliability: Still the same...for now.
Tech Support: Not local as was epix
Services: Depends upon whom you converse with for availability
Value for money: It changed obiviously, depends upon Frontier whether this changes or not. Instead of Jackflash, it will be Jackflush once the new cable order is complete.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------
Update August 14th, Thursday 2008
It's official Frontier Plans To Enforce 5GB Cap In 'December Or January'. Absolutely no value for the $$$ monthly cost of this product.
I did like the service, however I refuse to pay more for less. Comcast serves my area will try cable internet. Cables 6000 Mg down speed verses frontiers 1500 DL speed is no contest. Plus cable is cheaper than frontiers product.
Angry and upset? Sure am, and this update reflects my opinion of frontiers "more money for less" rip off scheme.

If you have epix then you probably have no alternative dsl provider. They know this and do not reinvest in their network to offer higher speeds. On the good side the connection never goes down. The bad side is we do not have competing providers to offer better service at a fair price.

I had Adelphia cable for the past three months and the speeds were fantastic. A constant 3000/247 connection! My big gripe, however, was that the ping times to my gaming server in Long Island, N.Y. were horrible. 84 to 100ms to a server less that 150mi. away. It took 17 hops to get there. The price was high too. Since I didn't use adelphia as a cable TV provider, I was charged $54/mo. plus a $3/mo. modem fee. So I thought I would try Epix DSL, thinking that I could live with slower download and upload speeds as long as my pings were better. Well I thought wrong. The trip took 19 hops and the pings to the gaming server were higher, around 103 to 117ms. Whenever I called tech support at Epix, the wait was anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes and this was at 9:00 in the morning.
I'm confused about what I should do. When I canceled Adelphia, they offered to lower the payments for twelve months. Maybe I'll call up again and see what they have to offer. The only good thing about Epix right now is the price--but not by much.
I called this afternoon to cancel DSL and the customer service rep tried to talk me out of it saying something may be done about the high ping times. I sent her the trace route to my gaming server and I am still waiting for her supervisor's call. I'm not holding my breath.

49.95 for 640/160 is a bit pricey, but there is no setup cost if you keep it for one year. There isnt much competion for high speed access in this area.
Keep in mind the local telco Commewealth Telephone, and Epix are really the same entity. It took Commenwealth almost 2 years from when DSL was first "avaible" in my area, till my phone equipment at the telco end was "capable" of DSL.
They sent the standard do it your self install kit, i oped not to have a tech set anything up, or ever show up at my house. They included a SpeedStream 5260 DSL modem, Dlink 530TX card, filters, PPPoE software. I had recently rewired my whole house with cat5 cabling so i opted to vary from standard filter instalion. From where the phone line enter the house all the analog phone's jacks were wired to 1 fliter right there, then i put a straight run of CAT5 unfiltered right to the DSL jack. I think this helped out.
On the install date, my modem went "GREEN" and synced up, well ahead of the scheduled time.
The modem sync's up within 20 seconds. I have never lost sync. The card they provided was very Linux friendly. I had the whole thing running up on my linux NAT box with roaring pengiun PPPoE with no problems. Speeds are fairly consistent, and many sites max out the modem at about 550-600kbps.
DSL in this area is fairly reliable, but by looking at some of the complaints in the epix newsgroups, i think milage varies by area. It would seem to me area's near their primary locations, Dallas and Clarks Summit, PA seem more reliable than areas far from their main offices.
My only real compaint was that the documentation provied with the install kit only covers installing the modem/filters, and installing the PPPoE client. Everything else involved was absent. Stuff like mail servers, where to change passwords, etc. I had to call tech support for some of the info, and the rest came much later in a "packet" they sent out.
Tech support for DSL server has a seperate number, my hold time were between 3 and 5 minutes. I havent had any bouts with tech service, but i would belive that getting a serious issuse resolved with tech support may be a hastle.
==Update === May 5th 2004 ===========
I left epix for adelphia cable. I thought I might update this to go though the difference. The main factors involved with monthly cost and speed.
When epix first deployed jack flash back in 99 or so, 640K download speed was more then enough bandwidth, however in 2004, 640k is really turring into the absolute bottom teir for broadband access.
From the perspective of gaming, epix is an excellent ISP for gaming, however nowadays your typical patch for a game may be well over 100megs, and a game demo or mod may be over 300. On my 640k dsl line, I may tie up my connection for 3-5 hours on a file that large. Not that maxing out the connection is a bad thing, but when it does max out, your connection drags.
While the 640k speed tier continues to be lower on the speed tier ladder, the price has always remained premium, 50/month. Now I do understand that epix does service a lot of areas that are less profitable, and really lack major metropolitan areas. I would rather see good quality connection rather than cheaper prices.
Here is a quick pros and cons list if comparing adelphia to epix.
Epix Pros: Free Equipment if you get a 12 month contract Low latency, you get to tier 1 carrier in 3 hops. Larger service area in more rural areas of NEPA Good speeds (Typically they have plenty of bandwidth to max out my modem) No inbound port blocks or outbound port blocks
Epix Cons: High monthly cost, especially for high speed tiers Contract pretty much required Maintenance typically happens at midnight, so if you use your connection late at night, you will get kicked off more often. Lower base speed tier PPPoE (I hate it, a lot of people hate it)
Adelpha pro's High modem speeds (3000/256, 4000/512) Generally good download speeds Completive pricing on promos No contract DHCP Addressing
Adelphia Cons Higher latency in NEPA (Packets are routed to bufflao and then to chicago to hit a teir 1 carrier) Modem rental or have to buy your own modem. (Although there are some rebate promos that basically give you the modem free) There are many inbound port blocks, and some outbound port blocks (Mainly to prevent the spread of internet worms, and spam)
So in short, I chose to get better download speeds over having lower pings. However I feel that the odds of adelphia improving routing are higher than the odds of epix raising the speed teir or reducing montly costs.
That being said here are some things I think epix should put in their game plan.
Later maintenance windows (3-5am) Raise the lowest speed teir to 768k/160k Loyalty discounts (I was a customer for 4 years) Ditch Contracts for CTSI telephone customers (You made your money from us already) Ditch up selling for level 1 tech support people (Dialup/level1 tech support people need to make dsl sales every month) Let sales people deal with sales and let tech support people worry about tech support. Keep and promote good tech support people, not people who can fill a sales quota. Keep the ports open (Don't port block)

I currently have and Epix dial up account. I have never had a problem with it and when there were issues (twice in two+ years) tech support was readily available and helpful. The price is a little steep at 21.95 a month but at least you don't get booted after only five hours like the less expensive companies. Overall, the dial up service had been great.
We recently signed up for jack flash as part of a long distance package with Commonwealth Telephone. I was thrilled to finally get something that wasnt so painfully slow. The sales rep told us that someone would be out by the end of the week to get us started.
The end of the week came and went with not even a word so first thing that following Monday morning I called Epix and found that they didnt even have the order! They contacted the phone company, gave me the excuse that someone wrote the order down instead of inputting it in the computer. (okay) They told me that they would be overnighting the modem to me. I was fine with that, mistakes happen, at least we are getting somewhere....boy was I wrong.
Another week goes by and no modem. So I call again. They tell me they are up to capacity in my area and it will be a "couple of weeks". They didnt know why anyone would tell me that the modem would be sent overnight. They told me that no one has to come to my house to "prime the line" and once I receive the modem all I have to so is set it up and I am ready to go. I've been pretty patient so far, at least I think so.
It has now been about 4 weeks, maybe even 5 and absolutely nothing. Now I am fed up and searching for another dsl or cable provider... I have seen prices for cable with 2000/256 for the same price I am supposed to pay. Unfortunately that service was unavailable in my area. I know my choices will be very limited where I am and it is highly likely epix is the only way to go for high speed internet. I live in Long Pond, which is not built up commercially, but the residential population is and has been booming for years.
I can only hope at this point that more providers will be coming in soon. With the amount of individual houses and communities being built around me there are a lot of potential customers.

nov 7th 12:00AM TO 6:49PM - Mail server down 8:55PM TO 10:06PM - OUT
The customer service is terrible. I have to wait on the line for almost 45 minutes on hold then go through the same steps til the tech realizes its a problem on their end. The cost is insane as well, 640/160 for 50 dollars.
The only other option right now is Adelphia which Im not going near. My cousin has this and its been even worse than epix. Plus they now disable your acess if you use a router.
Bottom line, Dont get this isp. It is out now daily. As soon as something better comes im out of here.
11/6/03 Its now 9:51AM on November 6th and my internet has been in and out. This happens so many times now im starting to log it down.
My inital experience was great, very little downtime but now it happens every weekend and now every day its down.
Update: It seems the internet was out yet again over the weekend. Since they dont service or work on the weeked I was stuck with an internet that would constantly be dropped every 50 or so seconds. It would come back every 20 or so. Finally they got it fixed but now when trying to send emails outlook reports that the servers disc space if full thus I cannot send email.
Just now it looks like I cant receive or send emails.
Tech support has to be 1 or 2 people only. I can NEVER get ahold of these people anymore. Im so sick of their poka midi music on the waiting line (no kidding!). Im right now on the phone waiting for 20 minutes. Youll hear "We appoligize for the delay however we are currently experiencing a high call volume". These guys really need to hire more people.
Britsys is in our area but only the buisness plans which are too expensive. Good god I hope something comes into our area soon besides Adelphia.
3/22/04
Update2: Looks like they took the mail server down to fix the issue. I just hung up after being on hold for nearly 30 minutes. Checked the mail and my unsent messages just sent.
3/29/04
Update 3: I received an email on the 26th letting me know that the epix team would be performing maintinence on the 27th and the 28th. Here is the email:
"Dear Valued Customer,
On Saturday, March 27th and Sunday, March 28th, 2004, between 12 AM and 6 AM, epix Internet Services will be conducting an upgrade to the JackFlash DSL network. The upgrade is integral to our continued efforts to improve our service. We have selected this time frame to avoid disruption of service to a majority of our customers.
As a result of this upgrade, you may need to reboot your DSL modem/router, your computer, and/or any devices that you may have connected to your DSL connection. In an effort to make this upgrade run as smooth as possible and keep you, our customer informed, epix will be updating the status of our upgrade on our web site. To check our web site go to »my.epix.net. You may also check our system status by calling 1-800-374-9669 and choosing technical support.
In the event you experience any technical difficulties after our upgrade, please call our technical support department at 1-800-374-9669. Technicians will be available to help you, Monday through Friday, between 8 AM and 10 PM, Saturday, between 9 AM and 6 PM, and Sunday, between 10 AM and 7 PM.
Thank you!
Epix Internet Services"
It is now the 29th and my connection is constantly being dropped every 60 seconds. It stays out from 50-90 seconds. Ive tried calling tech support but get this, Apparently their auto answer system is down as I get a busy signal. I cannot wait to get rid of this ISP. Please do not give them your business
4/6/04
Update 4: Network is still having issues. April 2-6 it has been having its random outages every 15 seconds. Im writing this now in the middle of another one. Its been going from 4:00PM and its now 5:49. Ive emailed their tech support as their phone service is a joke. Same old "currently experiencing a high call volume". Im at my whits end here. If they dont offer help (new modem?) Ill be canceling my service and going with another in our area.
4/7/04
Update 5: The outages have started again this morning. Its hit three times now and it doesnt seem like its stopping anytime soon. Still no email back from epix.
4/10/04
Update 6:
I got a call from tech support on Wednesday letting me know they received my email. They agreed with me that sending a new modem might help the issue. I got off the phone after I was told it would arrive on friday.
Friday comes and it indeed arrives however I waited until I was getting an outage before hooking it up. Today (Saturday, April 10th) at 2:12 I began getting an outage. I quickly tried the new modem however I still kept getting the disconnects. I disconnected my router and plugged my main computers ethernet directly into the modem. Everything seemed fine but seconds later another disconnect. Thus, It has to be either a problem in the lines coming to my house or something on their end.
I just got off the phone with a tech who let me know he would put a "ticket" in to let them know I still have the issue. Unfortunatly Ill have to wait til monday when they will check their end then the lines. Ill keep this updated as I get information.
Ive also signed up for line monitoring on DSL reports. It shows my internet has been out as well, Finally independant verification!
Update: 4/23/04
»ny-monitor.dslreports.com/r3/cri···and=5385
That pretty much says it all. Outages are still coming.

Basically their service is usually up and running, HOWEVER the modem choice, in this case speedstream, was pathetic.. I download files and it terminates with 60k left in a file and will continue to fail 2 to 3 more times before it finally finishes.. the modem constantly acts up. I asked for a different type of modem and their only response is "you'll have to wait for the next one".. SO I have to deal with poor quality just because the modem is acting up? At least with dialup I had a choice of which company and how I wanted it setup.. I DO NOT recommend buying ANY speedstream model from efficiency.. their product is BAD. All I want is a bridged modem that works and is reliable, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK??
Bottom line, if you want to "surf" faster this setup is fine, but anything above checking email and looking at yahoo I'd recommend going with a provider who actually knows their product.

Epix/Jack Flash
I've been on Jack Flash for many months now only because I haven't had a choice, them being the only DSL provider in my area. My connection is dropped all too often. Customer service has very limited hours with absolutely none at night. The people they have working tech support are generally pretty good but neither Jack Flash nor Commonwealth Telephone want to take responsitiblity for a problem I have that I've had in another state as well when I had dsl there and there they did fix it. Even there I eventually did switch to cable and that was 100% reliable with no problems whatsoever. That problem is every time I bring my handset of the phone anywhere near the cradle of the phone I get a loud squealing. It also has affected another phone in another part of the house, which now I can't even talk on. The options for service are very limited. I do need more speed but there is a huge gap in the next speed up and the price is not affordable. There is no middle ground for them. I've also read about others having their line conditioned by Commonwealth Telephone. That was never done here and it was like pulling teeth to get someone out here to install and set it up. I just found another dsl provider that may have entered my area and I'm going to check them out. I can't wait to get away from Jack Flash and, even more so, can't wait till cable comes to my area. Cable is just that much more reliable and more speed for the same money. DSL's days are numbered and hopefully Epix/JackFlash will die even sooner when some real competition comes into the area.

I called Epix about Jack Flash, was told it would run around $79 per month. I live in Hazleton. Too costly for me. I read in the paper sometime in March that there was an ISP operating south of Hazleton, and was going to be coming here in about 5 weeks, which should be any day now. Whatever kind it is, it uses an antenna which can be mounted outdoors or indoor. I don't remember the speed they mentioned, but it was at least 3 or 4 times faster than dial-up. It might have been 300 or 400 times, I forgot. I do not know anything else about it.
