    My Other Reviews·Insight Communicat..
It was with great saddness that I left Iglou for Insight. The Support Staff at Iglou always took care of me and always called me back to make sure I was happy. After the last Ice Storm in Jan 09, I couldn't reliably hit the speeds I was used to (2900 down and 300 up). Even though Iglou called to make sure I was up and running (and credited my account for the service interruption) I thought I would give cable a chance. If my cable internet does not work out; I'll be back in a heartbeat. This is a great company!

The folks at dslreports are telling me it's time to update my review... I've got nothing to add. The price is right, the service has been outstanding! The speeds are about the same since my last update. I have had to replace the modem because of a lightning strike. I plugged it in and and everything came right up. It's just a great service with no drama.

Ok, it's been 3+ years since I added to this review. Since then the price has dropped and the speed has gone up. $37.95 @ month ($2.00 cheaper than what I paid for 128K ISDN 5 years ago and $12.00 a month cheaper than my original 1500/128 DSL service.) for 3500/384 "Extreme DSL". I reliably get speeds at 2947/308. I can't ask for more!

I was able to make one phone call and have them arrange for service. I called on a Friday and the service was up Tuesday. I just had to plug in the modem and it was up and running. I couldn't ask for more. However on Wednesday, my voice service went down. I opened a trouble ticket with my LEC, BellSouth and they restored my voice service. Unfortunately, they also took down my DSL. Opened a Trouble Ticket with Iglou Thursday evening and spoke with a network administrator Friday. It appeared to be a LEC problem. Unfortunately, the LEC could not resolve it until Monday. By Monday afternoon, my DSL service was restored. I received a prompt follow-up call from Iglou to insure my service was up and working. Although I received conflicting information from Iglou and BellSouth as to the cause of the problem (Iglou said that someone had removed the card at the CO and the Bellsouth Tech said there was a defective card that needed replacing, everything now works and Iglou has a very happy customer. I would recommend them without hesitation. 5/24/03 No problems since installation, continued good service.

I look at both A&T DSL and Insight Broadband, since they advertise heavily and have lots of "deals". So far, their deals have not been significantly less than IGLOU (re-sells AT&T DSL service) but there is no comparison to stability and technical support. Catch this -- when I first got my DSL service, they called me when it appeared I was having trouble getting logged on. When was the last time the telco or the cable co called for anything except money? (When was the first time?)

I have the 1.5 mb / 256kb service, but I am probably going to upgrade to 3.0/512 at about the same price. I have used IGLOU from when dial-up was hot technology, and don't really see switching. There was a mild inconvenience that I had to go to their dealer to buy the modem, but it was completely configured. They used Zoom at that time, it is still running happily.

My corporate VPN works smoothly, all other services simply work. I also like their terms of service -- they know that DSL is just a data pipe. No requirements to use any OS or software, no upcharges for a home network. Also I have consistently found that the DSL Reports test tools show that I ma getting very close to the rated speed, both directions.

In our area, we have no cable access, DSL is it.
I tried a satellite connection with Hughes ... yuck.

I've been an IGLOU customer for about 5 years. Began on dial-up because they were one of the few with local access numbers. We are in a remote area, with many line problems. Any connection issues were a BellSouth problem.

About 3 years ago, our local office finally got upgrades which allowed DSL service to my site, more than 10,000 feet from CO. I see high attenuation and low SNR but the signal is acceptable at the 1.4 Mb/s level I use.

Once DSL was available, it took just 3 days for provisioning.
I have a dedicated IP, several email accounts,
dial-up access when away from home, new service, etc.

In general, the service is rock solid, with no quibbles about my usage, no trouble getting distros and letting Bittorrent seed SUSE and Ubuntu.

The few problems I've had resolved to BellSouth lines. One thing, in KY AT&T/BellSouth has a MANDATORY lock-in. You can't rent bare copper, but MUST be an AT&T POTS user in order to get DSL. AT&T makes it hard to boost service or cut prices, but IGLOU is my choice because I know AT&T filters mail and traffic, throttling some customers.

Recomend IGLOU anywhere in Central or Northern KY

I am a new DSL user. In May of 2005 when I was trying to decide which service type (cable, dsl) and which company I tried contacting the cable folks in Frankfort, and at least three dsl providers for this area. Sales and tech at IgLou spent significant time with me on several telephone calls and email conversations. They gave me good information and treated me with respect even as I asked many basic questions.

I ordered on May 13 (late Friday) and was promised May 20. It was connected May 20. One small glitch was that the afternoon it was provisioned (May 20) Bellsouth had a DSL outage so it was 10 pm before I actually connected.

Since then, I have had to unplug (power off - power on) modem two times. All other times it has worked as promised.

I have the 3.5 Mbps service. I have run test from time to time and usually show 2.5-2.8 speeds.

I bought the modem and had IgLou set it for me. (Zoom X4). I run a Linksys WRT54g with one computer connected by cable, one computer connected by wireless, one Linksys NSLU2. Iglou furnishes one static address, 8 mail boxes. I could run a server but I don't. My needs are straight forward. Internet, mail, and a VPN connection into my corporate network. These all work so I am happy.

I do not know what else to say other than they provide what they say. The customer service is real and live.

It is now Sept 2006. The service works as advertised. There is always a live knowledgeable person on any call (mostly questions.) I have rebooted the modem about once every three months. They had a price drop for new customers but offered that to me. No complaints.

I have had Iglou's DSL service for nearly a year and have not had any problems with it, aside from a temporary bandwidth restriction due to excessive use. However, their AUP does state that they can take action in cases such as that. After talking to one of the managers, this situation was resolved and I have a little better grasp on their floating quotas so as to temper my net habits.

My DSL modem came fully preconfigured, though I didn't like a lot of the non-DSL side settings so I was able to change them to better suit my particular configuration. When I needed to reset my modem to the default and subsequently forgot the proper configuration information, Iglou emailed that information to me (at another account) within 10 minutes of my call.

My only real complaint is that I wish I could have a faster upload speed. 384 is nice, but a 512 or 768 option for the regular user (as opposed to business plans) at the expense of download speed (3.5Mb is my current DL speed) would be a nice option to have.

The folks at Iglou understand that the "S" in ISP stands for service, and theirs is very good. I have been an Iglou dial-up customer since back in the mid 90s, and I have had cable since it was @home. I didn't spend an eternity on hold waiting for Iglou's tech support the night I got to go "live" on my DSL. They even helped answer a question about my router so all I had to do was move the ethernet cable from my cable modem the the DSL modem , and never missed a beat, except for the up and down speeds the cable has had lately.

I get to run my game server, and My ISP said I could : )

They recommended the Zoom 5551A Modem, so I bought one from them for $70, and they pre-configured it for PPPoE LLC, and all the other settings. I just plugged it in and after a couple of minutes with tech support was clocking speeds on DSLReports as fast as my soon to be un-employed cable modem.

$35 plus tax for 1.5meg down 256K up. They have a 3meg plan for only $10 more, but I'm good with 1.5, because I'm not a real big bandwidth hog.

I get a Static IP, good service, good customer service, I am happy with Iglou and would gladly reccommend them to anyone looking for broadband in Iglou's service area.

"High fees and unreliable connection are NOT worth the static IP's!"

Value for money:

When I signed up with Iglou, I came in under a special, and only had to pay $25 of the usual $75 activation fee. I was informed there was a $175 fee for early cancellation of the 12-month contract. However, I also knew that I would be moving in a few months, and asked about the fees associated with the moving of the service. The sales representative told me that the fees would be waived if I coordinated the move with Iglou.

While I had the service, I had an extremely poor connection. I called several times to support and each time we would try several things, ending each call with "we'll see if that works...” Prior to Iglou I had Bellsouth DSL and used the same 3Com internal modem for Iglou that I used with Bellsouth. I did not experience the problems with my Bellsouth service that I did with Iglou. In fact, I would have stayed with Bellsouth if I had a static IP address. Despite the fact that I had prior DSL service at this location using the same equipment and the same wiring, Iglou eventually chalked my problems up to "internal wiring or modem incompatibility." Although Iglou uses the same end network that Bellsouth uses, my 3Com modem from Bellsouth was not on the approved list of modems from Iglou (there were only 2). Since I knew I was moving soon, I lived with it for the remaining time there.

Once I closed on my new home, I called Iglou to move my service. The only way that I could move my service and avoid a reactivation fee of $75 was to establish phone service at the new home while maintaining phone service at the old residence. Not only would this mean that I could not keep my same phone number, but I would have also had to pay a number of fees to Bellsouth to establish and have two phone lines at two locations. As I was already strapped for cash, I decided that I would hold off setting up a transfer of my DSL service for a month so that I could afford the reactivation fee. I called Iglou and informed them that I would not yet be moving the service, but would still pay the monthly fee until I can move the service. Imagine my shock when I discover a $175 draft on my bank account. Seems that after I disconnected the phone at the old address and moved it to the new address, Iglou closed my account and charged me an early termination fee.

In all fairness, the problems with my connection could have been the equipment. As it was not an authorized modem, though I see no reason why it would work on Bellsouth's DSL and Iglou's. However, it could have also been defective, but I never got the chance to find out.

Iglou has long had a great reputation for Dial-up service in this area. Although I initially thought the fees were very high, I still entered the agreement based on their reputation. However, I had poor customer service and it cost me $175 and even more in overdraft fees.

Based on my experiences with Iglou sales and support, I would not recommend them for DSL service. However, I know nothing of their Dial-up service.

(8/4/04: This review has been update to reflect a more professional tone. None of the statements made in the original review were inaccurate. However, after the replies I received calling me a crybaby, a drug user, illiterate, and a liar, I decided the review did not have the appropriate tone to be useful to others trying to learn about Iglou DSL Service. All the statements in the review are true and accurate.)

I have been with iglou for many years. My service is 1500/256 and is bridged not PPPoE (thats good). The dsl service is always stable but my big complaint is the lack of service from bellsouth. About 6 months ago my line quality went terrible. It was a very erratic problem and difficult to pin. Bellsouth basically said tough luck and iglou was powerless to do anything about it. I was fortunate enough to have a connection in the right place at Bellsouth who had the line tested and determined it was a bad pair. The pair was swapped and the line went back to it's previous performance. I get 3 static ips, 1500/256 (usually clocks at 1220/213) for $54 a month. This used to be $49 but thanks to the Kentucky state legislature I'm paying an additional $5/month. Iglou just rolled out new lower pricing for PPPoE circuits that is considerable less than bridged. The LITE version comes in at $24.95/month which beats the AOL's 23.95 for dial-up.

I have been an Iglou DSL user since December 2003. After a 2 year rocky experience with InsightBB, I jumped on DSL a few weeks after it was rolled out in my neighborhood. My service with InsightBB was not horrible, though I averaged 4 hours outage per month. I also paid extra for a static IP address which never worked correctly. (Insight uses DHCP for static IP's and promise to always hand out the same IP. not so in my case.... I called customer service multiple times, with no resolution, I could only hold a static IP for several weeks)

In 8 months of usage, I have only had one known outage with Iglou DSL, due to Bellsouth losing power and battery/generator back-up failing in the Crestwood, KY CO (I thought COs never went dark?) It was refreshing to call Iglou and get quick answers. Within minutes they informed me Bellsouth lost power and Iglou had already opened a ticket with them.

Iglou provides no frills residential service with exceptional quality. My upstream is consistently 205kbps while downstream is 1200kbps. Highly recommended.

I have had a dialup account with Iglou for many years. At long last, they are now able to provide DSL service in the Louisville/Crestwood area. I chose the Basic DSL service which provides one dynamic IP address and 2 email accounts at $39.95 per month. For my simple needs, this should be sufficient. They do offer what they call their Family Plan which provides 4 static IP addresses and numerous email accounts at $49.95 per month.

I spoke with a tech support person for about 30 minutes, prior to making my decision to switch to the DSL service. This way I was pretty clear as to what was necessary on my end to prepare my residence for DSL. Because the service was very new to them, they were not as prepared for questions I had about where to purchase things like DSL phone filters.

I placed my order for service on a Monday. They estimated that service would be available in seven days. I ordered an Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5667 DSL modem from Inter Space Computers, one of the local companies. When the modem arrived on Friday, I decided to hook it up to see if by some chance the service might be active. Sure enough, the modem was able to train a DSL signal and in 5 minutes, I was online.

Service has been problem free in the 3 weeks I have been connected. I think the family is much happier now that I don't have the phone tied up for hours. Thank you Iglou!

    July 2004 update:

I have enjoyed my IGLOU DSL for about 2-1/2 years now. Generally speaking, service has been excellent. However, I have been informed that due to legislation changes in the state of Kentucky, it will now be necessary for IGLOU to collect "regulatory cost recovery fees and taxes" beginning July 2004. They estimate this cost to be about $5 per month. I'm not entirely happy with this situation as it now adds another $60 per year to what is an already costly (to me) service.

With the fact that email is mostly junk, and you can no longer download squat without fear of RIAA/MPAA extortion tactics, I may just go back to a minimal cost dialup service and find a less expensive hobby. So much for the great internet promise!
