SBC has, IMO, possibly the worst customer service of any entity I have ever tried to deal with.

Because of a mix-up in accounts, I lost my DSL connection about midnight Monday evening. Thinking that it was a technical problem, we reported it, and found out it had been "cancelled." It had indeed been cancelled-by the former holder of my phone number-and he had not had my number for 7 months, and I had been paying the bills on it.

So then we tried to get service re-established-we were told that our number was "unavailable" for SBC DSL. At which point I tried to switch ISPs, only to find out that SBC has a "DSL Indicator" on my phone number. A phone number that (1) I had a running DSL connection on for 7 months, (2) was informed by SBC Customer "service" was "unavailable" for DSL. So SBC won't give me the service because it's "unavailable" and I can't switch providers because SBC has a "DSL Indicator" on my line.

Finally, after about 3 hours on the phone, SBC placed a complete re-order of the service for us-but they will not turn the circuit back on until I receive the installation CD (which of course I already have.) They set a target date of December 17th. Remember that until the evening of December 8th, I had service on that very line. There isn't a reason on Earth they couldn't have simply turned my circuit back on.

This morning, we get a VM saying that they can't even meet the 17th, and will let us know "next Monday" when they will be able to process our order.

Since SBC has effectively tied my hands, all I can do now is go with Satellite DSL-at about three times the cost. But I'm going to do it-this kind of "service" isn't worth a $5 a month cost.

Needless to say, I'm cancelling my order with SBC, and seriously thinking about dumping my land line with Ameriterch.
