    Update--

I've had AT&T/BellSouth DSL service for about 6 years now. Still very, very satisfied with the service. I have upgraded to the XTreme 6 meg package and speeds are excellent. I consistently get speed test results of 6250 kbps down and 438 kbps up. Reliability has been excellent. Total down time over the 6 years is probably less than 4 or 5 hours. To be honest, I don't remember the last time my DSL was out.

    Original Post--

I live in a rural south Georgia town of ~15,000 residents and we were totally amazed to find out DSL was coming! I signed up the very day my number qualified at the FastAccess web page and opted for the professional install with the SpeedTouch Home Ethernet modem. The scheduled install appointment was 15 days later.

The tech showed up exactly as promised (and with the SpeedTouch Home!) and external splitter. I got the standard party line from Tech Support about not supporting Linux, but I acknowledged I undertood that and things proceeded. The tech had to call tech support because he could not surf from his laptop. Turns out DSG had provisioned my line but had not done all the necessary electronic cross-connects. The tech got that fixed and 10 minutes later I'm surfing at 1193 kbps down and 207 kbps up. I'm between 15,000 and 16,000 feet from the CO so these rates are pretty good.

I'm using a Linux server as a firewall/gateway for my home LAN. Took all of 3 minutes to install and get Roaring Penguin PPPoE client going on the Linux box and my home LAN is on broadband!
