I ordered residential DSL from Bell Atlantic on 9/23. I specifically asked the salesman if I could get two static IP addresses (for my small linux network). He said sure, just call him back after the install.
Install is scheduled for 10/13 and 10/.15, and seems to go reasonably smoothly, although the first installer had to wait on hold for more than an hour to get things done..
After the second day, we fire things up, and there's no joy. Installer claims it's my ethernet cards. I say that since I am communicating successfully between the other machines on the network, I don't think so. I have to badger him to go back to the truck and get another modem to see if that's the problem.
Of course, that was the problem. The modem (or whatever the end terminal unit is called) they shipped me was doa. Installer leaves the working modem, and everything seems great..
Today, I call the original sales guy and ask for the second IP address. He tells me that there's no way he promised me a second IP address. We go back and forth about this for a while, and he finally admits that there "may have been a miscommunication." Thanks. But his quick bottom line is that to get a second IP address, I have to (A) switch to commercial service, which involves an extra $15/month and (b) then pay an extra fee on top of that for a second IP address. Furthermore, this won't be available until at least December.
I'm currently looking around for another DSL provider/ISP that will charge something like the BA residential price but offer two static IPs. Good thing there's a 30 day money back guarantee....
